ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਅਰਪੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
tan man arpay satgur sarnaa-ee.
He dedicates his mind and body to the true Guru and seeks his sanctuary.
ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
hirdai naam vadee vadi-aa-ee.
His greatest glory is that he has God’s name enshrined in his heart.
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਹਾਨ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲਤਾ ਇਹ ਹੈ, ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੈ।
ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹੋਇ ਸਖਾਈ ॥੧॥
sadaa pareetam parabh ho-ay sakhaa-ee. ||1||
The Beloved God is his constant companion. ||1||
ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਲਈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਾਥੀ-ਮਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ।॥੧॥
ਸੋ ਲਾਲਾ ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ॥
so laalaa jeevat marai.
He alone is the true servant of God who remains detached from the worldly enticements while performing the worldly responsibilities.
ਅਸਲੀ ਦਾਸ ਉਹ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਾਸਨਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਮਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਸੋਗੁ ਹਰਖੁ ਦੁਇ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਉਧਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sog harakh du-ay sam kar jaanai gur parsaadee sabad uDhrai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He looks upon pleasure and pain alike. By Guru’s Grace, remaining focused on the Guru’s word, he is saved from the worldly enticements and vices.
ਉਹ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਗ਼ਮੀ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਾਸਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਰ ਧੁਰਹੁ ਫੁਰਮਾਈ ॥
karnee kaar Dharahu furmaa-ee.
He does his deeds according to God’s Primal Command.
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਆਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਕੋ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
bin sabdai ko thaa-ay na paa-ee.
Without attuning to the Guru’s word no one is approved in God’s court.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ) ਕਬੂਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਕਰਣੀ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਈ ॥
karnee keerat naam vasaa-ee.
By singing God’s praises, such a person enshrines His Name in the heart.
ਸੇਵਕ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਢਿਲ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੨॥
aapay dayvai dhil na paa-ee. ||2||
Then of His own accord, God gives him the gift of Naam without any delay. ||2||
ਇਹ ਦਾਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਦੇਂਦਿਆਂ ਚਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਾਂਦਾ ॥੨॥
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
manmukh bharam bhulai sansaar.
A self-conceited person is lost in worldly illusions.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜਗਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਬਿਨੁ ਰਾਸੀ ਕੂੜਾ ਕਰੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥
bin raasee koorhaa karay vaapaar.
Without the wealth of Naam, he makes false trade of worldly things.
ਪੂੰਜੀ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਉਹ ਝੂਠਾ ਵਣਜ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਵਿਣੁ ਰਾਸੀ ਵਖਰੁ ਪਲੈ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
vin raasee vakhar palai na paa-ay.
Without the wealth of Naam, he cannot receive the commodity of divine bliss.
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਸਰਮਾਇਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੌਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭੁਲਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੩॥
manmukh bhulaa janam gavaa-ay. ||3||
Therefore, being strayed the egocentric wastes away his life. ||3||
ਭੁੱਲਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਆਪ-ਹੁਦਰਾ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੁ ਲਾਲਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
satgur sayvay so laalaa ho-ay.
One who follows the true Guru’s teachings is the true servant of God.
ਅਸਲੀ ਦਾਸ ਉਹੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਊਤਮ ਜਾਤੀ ਊਤਮੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
ootam jaatee ootam so-ay.
His social status is exalted and his reputation is exalted.
ਉਹੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਉੱਚੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਪਉੜੀ ਸਭ ਦੂ ਊਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
gur pa-orhee sabh doo oochaa ho-ay.
Climbing the Guru’s Ladder of service and devotion, he becomes the most exalted of all.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ (ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਨਾਮ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ) ਪਉੜੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੭॥੪੬॥
naanak naam vadaa-ee ho-ay. ||4||7||46||
O’ Nanak, greatness is attained through meditation on God’s Name. ||4||7||46||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਹੈ l॥੪॥੭॥੪੬॥

Raag Aasaa, Third Guru:
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠੋ ਝੂਠੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
manmukh jhootho jhooth kamaavai.
The self-conceited soul-bride earns nothing but falsehood.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਦਾ ਉਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦਾ l
ਖਸਮੈ ਕਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
khasmai kaa mahal kaday na paavai.
She can never realize God’s presence in her heart.
ਉਹ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਦੂਜੈ ਲਗੀ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਵੈ ॥
doojai lagee bharam bhulaavai.
Attached to the love of worldly things, rather than God, she wanders in doubt.
ਦੂਜੇ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਈ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਮਮਤਾ ਬਾਧਾ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
mamtaa baaDhaa aavai jaavai. ||1||
Entangled in worldly attachments, the entire world keeps going through the cycles of birth and death. ||1||
ਅਪਣੱਤ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਜਗਤ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਦੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਕਾ ਮਨ ਦੇਖੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥
duhaaganee kaa man daykh seegaar.
O’ my mind, look at the life of a self conceited person who is like a decorated deserted wife,
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਖਸਮ ਦੀ ਛੱਡੀ ਹੋਈ ਮੰਦ-ਕਰਮਣ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਵੇਖ।
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤਿ ਧਨਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ਝੂਠੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਾਖੰਡ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
putar kalat Dhan maa-i-aa chit laa-ay jhooth moh pakhand vikaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He always thinks about falsehood, worldly attachment, deceit and evil pursuits like the deserted wife who always thinks about her sons, their spouses,and worldly wealth,. ||1||Pause||
ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪੁੱਤਰਾਂ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ, ਧਨ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਦਾ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
sadaa sohagan jo parabh bhaavai.
One who is pleasing to God is forever a fortunate soul-bride.
ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਚੰਗੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਬਣਾਵੈ ॥
gur sabdee seegaar banaavai.
She spiritually adorns herself with the Guru’s teachings.
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਮਿਲਾਪ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਤਮਕ) ਸੋਹਜ ਬਣਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਵੈ ॥
sayj sukhaalee an-din har raavai.
Her heart is at peace and she always enjoys the company of Husband-God.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਦੀ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਮਾਣਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
mil pareetam sadaa sukh paavai. ||2||
United with her Beloved-God, she always enjoys peace and bliss. ||2||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਸਾ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
saa sohagan saachee jis saach pi-aar.
Truly fortunate is that soul-bride who is in love with God.
ਚੰਗੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਜੋ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਅਪਣਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਸਦਾ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥
apnaa pir raakhai sadaa ur Dhaar.
She always keeps her Husband-God enshrined in her heart.
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਨੇੜੈ ਵੇਖੈ ਸਦਾ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥
nayrhai vaykhai sadaa hadoor.
She always deems Him near and in front of her.
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਗ-ਸੰਗ ਵੇਖਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਰਬ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥੩॥
mayraa parabh sarab rahi-aa bharpoor. ||3||
She firmly believes and says that My God is all-pervading everywhere. ||3||
ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਆਗੈ ਜਾਤਿ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
aagai jaat roop na jaa-ay.
Neither social status nor beauty goes to the world hereafter.
ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਹ ਇਹ ਉੱਚੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਇਹ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਰੂਪ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤੇਹਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੇਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
tayhaa hovai jayhay karam kamaa-ay.
Whatever deeds one does in this world, one becomes like that and is judged in God’s court accordingly.
(ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸਬਦੇ ਊਚੋ ਊਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
sabday oocho oochaa ho-ay.
By following the Guru’s word, one spiritually becomes the highest of the high.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਉੱਚਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥੮॥੪੭॥
naanak saach samaavai so-ay. ||4||8||47||
O Nanak, he merges in the eternal God. ||4||8||47||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੮॥੪੭॥
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Raag Aasaa, Third Guru:
ਭਗਤਿ ਰਤਾ ਜਨੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
bhagat rataa jan sahj subhaa-ay.
The one who becomes imbued with the loving devotion of God remains in a state of peace and poise.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭੈ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
gur kai bhai saachai saach samaa-ay.
With the respect of the Guru and the revered fear of God, he merges in the eternal God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
bin gur pooray bhagat na ho-ay.
God’s worship is not possible, without the guidance of the perfect Guru.
(ਪਰ) ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਰੁੰਨੇ ਅਪਨੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥੧॥
manmukh runnay apnee pat kho-ay. ||1||
The self-willed people ultimately cry after losing their honor. ||1||
ਆਪ ਹੁੰਦਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗੁਆ ਕੇ ਵਿਰਲਾਪ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਇ ॥
mayray man har jap sadaa Dhi-aa-ay.
O’ my mind, always remember and meditate on God’s name with loving devotion.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰ, ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰ।
ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਜੋ ਇਛੈ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sadaa anand hovai din raatee jo ichhai so-ee fal paa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
One who meditates on Naam, a state of bliss always prevails within him and he obtains whatever he wishes. ||1||Pause||
(ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਚਾਉ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਜਿਸ ਫਲ ਦੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਫਲ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਏ ॥
gur pooray tay pooraa paa-ay.
By following the teachings of the perfect Guru, one realizes the perfect God,
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਲੱਭਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
hirdai sabad sach naam vasaa-ay.
and the Guru’s word and the eternal God’s Name is enshrined in the heart.
ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਤਰੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰਿ ਨਾਏ ॥
antar nirmal amrit sar naa-ay.
One who meditates on God’s nectar like ambrosial Naam, his heart becomes immaculate from within.
ਜੋ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੇ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਦਾ ਸੂਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੨॥
sadaa soochay saach samaa-ay. ||2||
Thus, by always remaining pure, one merges in the eternal God. ||2||
ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਸੱਚੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਵੇਖੈ ਸਦਾ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥
har parabh vaykhai sadaa hajoor.
He always feels God’s presence with him.
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਅੰਗ-ਸੰਗ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥
gur parsaad rahi-aa bharpoor.
By Guru’s Grace, he beholds God pervading everywhere.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਹਾ ਜਾਉ ਤਹ ਵੇਖਾ ਸੋਇ ॥
jahaa jaa-o tah vaykhaa so-ay.
Wherever I go, there I see Him.
ਮੈਂ ਜਿਧਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੩॥
gur bin daataa avar na ko-ay. ||3||
Except the Guru, there is no other bestower of the gift of Naam. ||3||
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਇਹ (ਉੱਚੀ) ਦਾਤਿ ਦੇਣ ਜੋਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥
gur saagar pooraa bhandaar.
The Guru is like an ocean and the perfect treasure of virtues,
ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਅਖੁੱਟ ਹੈ,
ਊਤਮ ਰਤਨ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
ootam ratan javaahar apaar.
in it are limitless sublime jewels and diamonds of God’s praises,
ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੇ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਰਤਨ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਭਰੇ ਪਏ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
gur parsaadee dayvanhaar.
By the Guru’s grace, God blesses us with such priceless gifts of His praises
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਦਾਤਾਰ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਰਤਨ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸੇ ਬਖਸਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੯॥੪੮॥
naanak bakhsay bakhsanhaar. ||4||9||48||
O’ Nanak, God Himself blesses people with the precious gift of Naam. |4||9||48||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੯॥੪੮॥
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Raag Aasaa, Third Guru:
ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਇਰੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
gur saa-ir satgur sach so-ay.
The Guru is the ocean of virtues; the true Guru is the embodiment of God.
ਗੁਰੂ (ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ) ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ,
ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
poorai bhaag gur sayvaa ho-ay.
Through perfect destiny, one is able to serves the Guru by following His teachings.
ਵੱਡੀ ਕਿਸਮਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ (ਦੱਸੀ) ਸੇਵਾ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
