ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
gur kaa darsan agam apaaraa. ||1||
but the Guru’s teaching is limitless and beyond comprehension. ||1||
ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ l ਇਹ ਛੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੇ ॥੧॥
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
gur kai darsan mukat gat ho-ay.
By following the Guru’s teachings, one attains liberation from the vices,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ (ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹੋਏ) ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਚਾ ਆਪਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saachaa aap vasai man so-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and the presence of eternal God is realized in the heart. ||1||Pause||
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ l॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਉਧਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
gur darsan uDhrai sansaaraa.
The entire world is saved from the vices by following the Guru’s teachings,
ਜਗਤ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਲਾਏ ਭਾਉ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
jay ko laa-ay bhaa-o pi-aaraa.
only if one imbues one self with the love of Guru’s teachings.
(ਪਰ ਤਾਂ) ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਵਿਚ) ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਪਿਆਰ ਜੋੜੇ।
ਭਾਉ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲਾਏ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋਇ ॥
bhaa-o pi-aaraa laa-ay virlaa ko-ay.
But only a rare person embraces true love for Guru’s teachings.
ਪਰ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੀ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਵਿਚ) ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਪਿਆਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
gur kai darsan sadaa sukh ho-ay. ||2||
Everlasting peace is attained by following the Guru’s teachings. ||2||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਵਿਚ (ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜਿਆਂ) ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥
gur kai darsan mokh du-aar.
By following the Guru’s teachings one finds the way to liberation from vices.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਵਿਚ (ਸੁਰਤਿ ਟਿਕਾਇਆਂ) ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਰਾਹ ਲੱਭ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੈ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਸਾਧਾਰੁ ॥
satgur sayvai parvaar saaDhaar.
By following the Guru’s teachings, one becomes a source of spiritual support to one’s entire family.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਭੀ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਿਗੁਰੇ ਕਉ ਗਤਿ ਕਾਈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
niguray ka-o gat kaa-ee naahee.
There is no salvation for the one who does not follow the Guru’s teachings.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਅਵਗਣਿ ਮੁਠੇ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਹੀ ॥੩॥
avgan muthay chotaa khaahee. ||3||
Being deceived by evil habits, they suffer punishment. ||3||
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਾਪਾ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਲੁੱਟੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੱਟਾਂ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ l॥੩॥
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਰੀਰ ॥
gur kai sabad sukh saaNt sareer.
Peace and tranquility prevail in the mind and body by following the Guru’s word,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਖ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਲਗੈ ਨ ਪੀਰ ॥
gurmukh taa ka-o lagai na peer.
The person who follows the Guru’s teachings is not afflicted by any pain.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਦੁੱਖ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
jamkaal tis nayrh na aavai.
The messenger (fear) of death does not come near him.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁੱਕ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੪॥੧॥੪੦॥
naanak gurmukh saach samaavai. ||4||1||40||
O’ Nanak, the Guru’s follower merges in the eternal God.||4||1||40||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥੪੦॥
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Raag Aasaa, Third Guru:
ਸਬਦਿ ਮੁਆ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
sabad mu-aa vichahu aap gavaa-ay.
One who frees himself from the bonds of Maya by following the Guru’s word,eradicates his self-conceit from within.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਲੋਂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਤਮਾਇ ॥
satgur sayvay til na tamaa-ay.
Not even an iota of greed remains in the person who follows the teachings of the true Guru.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਰਤਾ ਭਰ ਭੀ ਲਾਲਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ।
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
nirbha-o daataa sadaa man ho-ay.
In that person’s mind always dwells the fearless benevolent Giver.
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਸਦਾ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਤੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਡਰ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਪਾਏ ਭਾਗਿ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥
sachee banee paa-ay bhaag ko-ay. ||1||
But only by great good fortune does a rare person realize the eternal God by following the divine words of the Guru. ||1||
ਪਰ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਚੰਗੀ ਕਿਸਮਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਗੁਣ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਅਉਗੁਣ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
gun sangrahu vichahu a-ogun jaahi.
O’ my friends, amass virtues, so that vices from within you go away.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਭਲਾਈਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੱਤਰ ਕਰ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆਂ ਭੱਜ ਜਾਣ
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
pooray gur kai sabad samaahi. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Through the word of the true Guru, you will merge in God. ||1||Pause||
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਤੂੰ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਹਿਂਗਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਗੁਣਾ ਕਾ ਗਾਹਕੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋ ਗੁਣ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
gunaa kaa gaahak hovai so gun jaanai.
Only the one who is the seeker of the virtues knows their worth.
ਜੋ ਨੇਕੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ਹੈ, ਓਹੀ ਨੇਕੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥
amrit sabad naam vakhaanai.
He meditates on God’s Name by following the ambrosial words of the Guru,
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰੂਪ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸੂਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
saachee banee soochaa ho-ay.
By following the divine word, his behaviour becomes pure (righteous).
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਣ ਤੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
gun tay naam paraapat ho-ay. ||2||
By acquiring these virtues, he attains the wealth of Naam. ||2||
ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੌਦਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਗੁਣ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਪਾਏ ਨ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
gun amolak paa-ay na jaahi.
These invaluable virtues cannot be acquired easily.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ, ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਤੋਂ ਮਿਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ l
ਮਨਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥
man nirmal saachai sabad samaahi.
These virtues come to reside in the mind which is rendered pure by the divine words of God’s praises.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਇਹ ਗੁਣ) ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋਏ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
say vadbhaagee jinH naam Dhi-aa-i-aa.
Very fortunate are those who have meditated on Naam,
ਉਹ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ l
ਸਦਾ ਗੁਣਦਾਤਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
sadaa gundaataa man vasaa-i-aa. ||3||
and have always enshrined in their minds the bestower of virtues. ||3||
ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਇਆ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਜੋ ਗੁਣ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹੈ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥
jo gun sangrahai tinH balihaarai jaa-o.
I dedicate myself to those who gather these virtues.
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਨੇਕੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੱਤਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਤੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥
dar saachai saachay gun gaa-o.
Associating with them, I sing the praises of the eternal God.
(ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ (ਟਿਕ ਕੇ) ਉਸ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
aapay dayvai sahj subhaa-ay.
The one, whom God blesses with these virtues, remains in a state of equipoise.
ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੪॥੨॥੪੧॥
naanak keemat kahan na jaa-ay. ||4||2||41||
O’ Nanak, the worth of such a fortunate person cannot be described. ||4||2||41||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਉੱਚੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ) ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੪॥੨॥੪੧॥

Raag Aasaa, Third Guru:
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
satgur vich vadee vadi-aa-ee.
The true Guru has this great virtue
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਵੱਡਾ ਭਾਰਾ ਗੁਣ ਹੈ,
ਚਿਰੀ ਵਿਛੁੰਨੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥
chiree vichhunay mayl milaa-ee.
that he unites even those persons with God who have been separated from Him for a long time.
ਕਿ ਉਹ ਚਿਰੰਕਾਲ (ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜਨਮਾਂ) ਦੇ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
aapay maylay mayl milaa-ay.
God Himself unites a person with the Guru and then through the Guru attunes that person to Himself.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਗੁਰੂ) ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਆਪਣੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਆਪੇ ਪਾਏ ॥੧॥
aapnee keemat aapay paa-ay. ||1||
This way God Himself makes one realize the worth of Naam. ||1||
ਤੇ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਿਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
har kee keemat kin biDh ho-ay.
In what way can the worth of God be determined?
ਕਿਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ?
ਹਰਿ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har aprampar agam agochar gur kai sabad milai jan ko-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
God is infinite, profound and incomprehensible, through the Guru’s teachings some rare person may realize Him. ||1||Pause||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਪਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤਕ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
gurmukh keemat jaanai ko-ay.
Only a rare Guru’s follower knows God’s worth.
ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਵਿਰਲੇ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
virlay karam paraapat ho-ay.
It is only a very rare person who by God’s grace attains the gift of God’s Name.
ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਊਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਊਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
oochee banee oochaa ho-ay.
Through the sublime word of the Guru one acquires high moral character.
ਸ਼੍ਰੇਸਟ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਚੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥
gurmukh sabad vakhaanai ko-ay. ||2||
A rare Guru’s follower meditates on God’s Name through the Guru’s word.||2||
ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਸਰੀਰਿ ॥
vin naavai dukh darad sareer.
Without meditating on God’s Name, one’s body is afflicted with pain and agony of vices.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ) ਦੁੱਖ ਰੋਗ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਤਾ ਉਤਰੈ ਪੀਰ ॥
satgur bhaytay taa utrai peer.
but when one meets and follow the teachings of the True Guru, then that pain is removed.
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
bin gur bhaytay dukh kamaa-ay.
Without following the Guru’s teachings, one does such deeds which bring suffering.
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਹੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਦੁੱਖ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ,
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
manmukh bahutee milai sajaa-ay. ||3||
The self-willed person receives even more punishment. ||3||
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਅਤਿ ਰਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
har kaa naam meethaa at ras ho-ay.
The nectar of God’s Name is so very sweet.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਇਕ ਐਸਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਹੈ ਜੋ) ਮਿੱਠਾ ਹੈ, ਬੜੇ ਰਸ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੀਵਤ ਰਹੈ ਪੀਆਏ ਸੋਇ ॥
peevat rahai pee-aa-ay so-ay.
He alone partakes in this nectar, whom God Himself leads to it.
ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਪਿਲਾਏ।
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
gur kirpaa tay har ras paa-ay.
Only by Guru’s grace, does one enjoy the divine elixir of God’s Name.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥੩॥੪੨॥
naanak naam ratay gat paa-ay. ||4||3||42||
O’ Nanak, imbued with Naam, one attains high spiritual status.||4||3||42||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗਿ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀਜ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੩॥੪੨॥

Raag Aasaa, Third Guru:
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰ ॥
mayraa parabh saachaa gahir gambheer.
My God is eternal, unfathomable and profound
ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਡੂੰਘਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਜਿਗਰੇ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੇਵਤ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਰੀਰ ॥
sayvat hee sukh saaNt sareer.
A sense of peace and tranquility arises in the body by meditating on Naam.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਖ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਬਦਿ ਤਰੇ ਜਨ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
sabad taray jan sahj subhaa-ay.
God’s devotees intiutively swim across the worldly ocean of vices by meditating on Naam through the Guru’s word.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਗੋਲੇ ਸੁਖੈਨ ਹੀ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਹਮ ਸਦ ਲਾਗਹ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
tin kai ham sad laagah paa-ay. ||1||
I always humbly bow to such devotees. ||1||
ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥
