ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
aasaa mehlaa 1.
Raag Aasaa, First Guru:
ਕਾਇਆ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਮਨੁ ਹੈ ਧੋਤੀ ॥
kaa-i-aa barahmaa man hai Dhotee.
O’ Pundit, for me, a body devoid of evil thoughts is the high caste Brahmin. The purified mind is my Dhoti, the cloth around the legs;
ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਹੀ ਉੱਚ-ਜਾਤੀਆ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਹੈ, ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਦੀ ਧੋਤੀ ਹੈ।
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਜਨੇਊ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਕੁਸਪਾਤੀ ॥
gi-aan janay-oo Dhi-aan kuspaatee.
divine knowledge is the sacred thread and mind attuned to God is the grass ring.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਜਨੇਊ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਦੱਭ ਦਾ ਛੱਲਾ।
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਜਸੁ ਜਾਚਉ ਨਾਉ ॥
har naamaa jas jaacha-o naa-o.
I only beg for God’s Name and sing His praise,
ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ (ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ (ਦੱਛਣਾ) ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਹੀ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਸਮਾਉ ॥੧॥
gur parsaadee barahm samaa-o. ||1||
so that by the Guru’s grace I may remain absorbed in God ||1||
ਤਾਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ (ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਾਂ ॥੧॥
ਪਾਂਡੇ ਐਸਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
paaNday aisaa barahm beechaar.
O’ Pandit, contemplate on God’s virtues in such a way,
ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ! ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰ,
ਨਾਮੇ ਸੁਚਿ ਨਾਮੋ ਪੜਉ ਨਾਮੇ ਚਜੁ ਆਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naamay such naamo parha-o naamay chaj aachaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
that His Name may sanctify you, His Name may be your study of sacred books and His Name be your wisdom and way of life. ||1||Pause||
ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰਤਾ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਤੇਰੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਅਤੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਹੁ-ਰੀਤੀ ਹੋਵੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਨੇਊ ਜਿਚਰੁ ਜੋਤਿ ਹੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
baahar janay-oo jichar jot hai naal.
O’ Pundit, the outer sacred thread is worthwhile only as long as the divine light is within you .
(ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ!) ਬਾਹਰਲਾ ਜਨੇਊ ਉਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ (ਫਿਰ ਇਹ ਕਿਸ ਕੰਮ?)।
ਧੋਤੀ ਟਿਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥
Dhotee tikaa naam samaal.
Instead of outward symbols such as the sacred cloth around the legs and the ceremonial mark on the forehead, amass God’s Name.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਂਭ-ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਧੋਤੀ ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਟਿੱਕਾ।
ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਨਿਬਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
aithai othai nibhee naal.
Here and hereafter, the Name alone shall stand by you.
ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰਾ ਪੱਖ ਪੂਰੇਗਾ।
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਹੋਰਿ ਕਰਮ ਨ ਭਾਲਿ ॥੨॥
vin naavai hor karam na bhaal. ||2||
Therefore, except meditation on God’s Name don’t seek any other rituals. ||2||
(ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ!) ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਰਸਮਾਂ ਨਾਹ ਭਾਲਦਾ ਫਿਰ ॥੨॥
ਪੂਜਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਮਾਇਆ ਪਰਜਾਲਿ ॥
poojaa paraym maa-i-aa parjaal.
Consider love for God as worship and burn your desire for Maya as ritual fire.
ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾੜ ਦੇ-ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਦੇਵ-ਪੂਜਾ।
ਏਕੋ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਭਾਲਿ ॥
ayko vaykhhu avar na bhaal.
Behold only the one God in all and do not seek out any other (god or goddess).
ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ, (ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ!) ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਲੱਭਦਾ ਰਹੁ।
ਚੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੈ ਤਤੁ ਗਗਨ ਦਸ ਦੁਆਰ ॥
cheenHai tat gagan das du-aar.
A person should recognize the essence (of the prevalence of God) in the heavens and all the ten directions of the world,
ਦਸਵੇਂ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ੇ ਦੇ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ,
ਹਰਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਠ ਪੜੈ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥੩॥
har mukh paath parhai beechaar. ||3||
Read aloud and reflect on the divine word. ||3||
ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਵਾਰਤਾ ਵਾਚ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸੋਚ ਵੀਚਾਰ ਕਰ ॥੩॥
ਭੋਜਨੁ ਭਾਉ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਭਾਗੈ ॥
bhojan bhaa-o bharam bha-o bhaagai.
Doubt and fear depart with the spiritual diet of God’s love.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਦੀ ਖੁਰਾਕ ਨਾਲ ਵਹਿਮ ਤੇ ਡਰ ਦੌੜ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਪਾਹਰੂਅਰਾ ਛਬਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
paahroo-araa chhab chor na laagai.
With powerful guard like God, no evil thought would enter the mind.
ਰੋਹਬ ਦਾਬ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੰਤਰੀ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਪਹਿਰੇ ਤੇ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਚੋਰ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦਾ।
ਤਿਲਕੁ ਲਿਲਾਟਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਏਕੁ ॥
tilak lilaat jaanai parabh ayk.
Realization of God is the best form of ceremonial mark on the forehead.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਹੀ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਪਰ ਦਾ ਤਿਲਕ ਹੈ।
ਬੂਝੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਬੇਕੁ ॥੪॥
boojhai barahm antar bibayk. ||4||
Realization of God within is the best intelect (sense of discrimination between good and bad). ||4||
ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ-ਵੱਸਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ਵੀਚਾਰ (ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਦੀ ਪਰਖ) ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਆਚਾਰੀ ਨਹੀ ਜੀਤਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
aachaaree nahee jeeti-aa jaa-ay.
God cannot be realized by rites and rituals.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਰਸਮਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ l
ਪਾਠ ਪੜੈ ਨਹੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
paath parhai nahee keemat paa-ay.
His virtues cannot be estimated by reciting sacred scriptures.
ਵੇਦ ਆਦਿਕ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਠ ਪੜ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਅਸਟ ਦਸੀ ਚਹੁ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
asat dasee chahu bhayd na paa-i-aa.
The eighteen Puranas and the four Vedas do not know His mystery.
ਅਠਾਹਰਾਂ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਅਤੇ ਚਾਰ ਵੇਦ ਉਸਦੇ ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥੫॥੨੦॥
naanak satgur barahm dikhaa-i-aa. ||5||20||
O’ Nanak, the true Guru has revealed that God to me. ||5||20||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਵਿਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥੨੦॥
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Raag Aasaa, First Guru:
ਸੇਵਕੁ ਦਾਸੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
sayvak daas bhagat jan so-ee.
He alone is the selfless servant and humble devotee of God,
ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਅਸਲ) ਸੇਵਕ ਹੈ ਦਾਸ ਹੈ ਭਗਤ ਹੈ
ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
thaakur kaa daas gurmukh ho-ee.
who follows the Guru’s teachings.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ, ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਨਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਜੀ ਤਿਨਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਗੋਈ ॥
jin sir saajee tin fun go-ee.
He who has created the Universe, shall ultimately destroy it.
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਰਚੀ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥
tis bin doojaa avar na ko-ee. ||1||
Without Him there is none other at all. ||1||
ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਦੂਜਾ ਉਸ ਵਰਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਸਾਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
saach naam gur sabad veechaar.
By contemplating and meditating on God’s Name through the Guru’s word,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ-
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmukh saachay saachai darbaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
the Guru’s followers are adjudged true in the eternal God’s court. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਸਦਾ-ਅਟੱਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਖ਼ਰੂ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਚਾ ਅਰਜੁ ਸਚੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
sachaa araj sachee ardaas.
The true supplication and true prayer from the core of heart,
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ) ਸੱਚੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਦਿਲੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਨੂੰ,
ਮਹਲੀ ਖਸਮੁ ਸੁਣੇ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥
mahlee khasam sunay saabaas.
is listened and honored by the Master-God.
ਮਹਲ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਦਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਸਚੈ ਤਖਤਿ ਬੁਲਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
sachai takhat bulaavai so-ay.
God calls the supplicant to His presence,
ਆਪਣੇ ਸਦਾ-ਅਟੱਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਉਤੇ (ਬੈਠਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਉਸ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਦਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
day vadi-aa-ee karay so ho-ay. ||2||
and then He, who is capable of doing everything, bestows him with honor. ||2||
ਤੇ ਉਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਣ-ਆਦਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਤੇਰਾ ਤਾਣੁ ਤੂਹੈ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ॥
tayraa taan toohai deebaan.
O’ God, a follower of the Guru depends upon Your support and Your power.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਤਾਣ ਹੈ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥
gur kaa sabad sach neesaan.
The Word of the Guru is his true insignia.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਵਾਨਾ ਹੈ,
ਮੰਨੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੁ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
mannay hukam so pargat jaa-ay.
The one who obeys Your command departs with glory from this world.
ਜੋ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ (ਸਿਰ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ) ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਸੋਭਾ ਖੱਟ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੈ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੩॥
sach neesaanai thaak na paa-ay. ||3||
Because through the insignia of truth, his way is not blocked. ||3||
ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਸੱਚੀ ਰਾਹਦਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਰੋਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦਾ ॥੩॥
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਹਿ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਵੇਦੁ ॥
pandit parheh vakaaneh vayd.
The Pandits read and expound on the Vedas,
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਲੋਕ ਵੇਦ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸੁਣਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਭੇਦੁ ॥
antar vasat na jaaneh bhayd.
but they do not understand the secret that the wealth of God’s Name is within.
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਭੇਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੋਝੀ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
gur bin sojhee boojh na ho-ay.
But without the Guru’s teachings this understanding is not attained;
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ,
ਸਾਚਾ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥
saachaa rav rahi-aa parabh so-ay. ||4||
that the eternal God is pervading in all. ||4||
ਕਿ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਕਿਆ ਹਉ ਆਖਾ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥
ki-aa ha-o aakhaa aakh vakhaanee.
What shall I say, utter or describe about following the Guru’s teachings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਖੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਦਾ ਮੈਂ ਕੀਹ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰਾਂ? ਕੀਹ ਆਖ ਕੇ ਸੁਣਾਵਾਂ?
ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸਰਬ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ॥
tooN aapay jaaneh sarab vidaanee.
O’ the executor of all wonders, You Yourself know everything.
ਹੇ ਚੋਜੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ (ਇਸ ਭੇਦ ਨੂੰ) ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੋ ਦਰੁ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ॥
naanak ayko dar deebaan.
O’ Nanak, the only support for the Guru’s follower is holy congregation and God Himself,
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਇਕ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ਾ ਹੈ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਤਹਾ ਗੁਦਰਾਣੁ ॥੫॥੨੧॥
gurmukh saach tahaa gudraan. ||5||21||
where his main support of life remains the meditation on God’s Name through the Guru’s teachings. ||5||21||
ਜਿਥੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥੨੧॥

ਕਾਚੀ ਗਾਗਰਿ ਦੇਹ ਦੁਹੇਲੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥
kaachee gaagar dayh duhaylee upjai binsai dukh paa-ee.
The miserable human body is like an unbaked earthen pitcher. It takes birth and dies after suffering all life.
ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਕੱਚੇ ਘੜੇ ਸਮਾਨ ਹੈ, ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਕਿਉ ਤਰੀਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥
ih jag saagar dutar ki-o taree-ai bin har gur paar na paa-ee. ||1||
How can this terrifying world-ocean be crossed over? Without the support of the Divine Guru, it cannot be crossed. ||1|
ਇਹ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ਰੱਬ ਰੂਪ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਇਹ ਤਰਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।|
ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਹਰੇ ॥
tujh bin avar na ko-ee mayray pi-aaray tujh bin avar na ko-ay haray.
O’ my beloved God, without You there is none other. Yes indeed, except You, there is no one at all to help me.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੇਰਾ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ (ਆਸਰਾ) ਨਹੀਂ, ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਸਰਬੀ ਰੰਗੀ ਰੂਪੀ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sarbee rangee roopee tooNhai tis bakhsay jis nadar karay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
You are pervading in all colors and forms; You bless the one on whom You cast Your glance of grace. ||1||Pause||
ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਰੰਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਰੇ ਰੂਪਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈਂ। ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ ਉਤੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਾਸੁ ਬੁਰੀ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਦੇਵੈ ਪਿਰ ਸਿਉ ਮਿਲਣ ਨ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਰੀ ॥
saas buree ghar vaas na dayvai pir si-o milan na day-ay buree.
Maya is like an evil mother-in-law who does not let me stay in my own home (heart); the vicious one does not let me meet with my Husband-God.
ਮੇਰੀ ਭੈੜੀ ਸੱਸ (ਮਾਇਆ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਣ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਇਹ ਚੰਦਰੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਂਦੀ।
ਸਖੀ ਸਾਜਨੀ ਕੇ ਹਉ ਚਰਨ ਸਰੇਵਉ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਧਰੀ ॥੨॥
sakhee sajnee kay ha-o charan sarayva-o har gur kirpaa tay nadar Dharee. ||2||
I humbly serve my virtuous friends and mates, with whose help the Guru-God has cast a glance of grace on me. ||2||
ਮੈਂ ਸਤਸੰਗੀ ਸਹੇਲੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ (ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ), ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਾਲ ਤੱਕਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
