ਐਸਾ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਮਤੁ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aisaa gurmat ramat sarera. har bhaj mayray man gahir gambhera. |1| rahaa-o.
O’ my mind, following Guru’s teachings meditate on that profound and unfathomable God who is pervading in all. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਕਰ ਜੋ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਰੀਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਅਨਤ ਤਰੰਗ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਾ ॥
anat tarang bhagat har rangaa.
Countless waves of God’s worship keep arising in the mind of those who are imbued with God’s love.
ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਲਹਿਰਾਂ ਉਠਦੀਆਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸੂਚੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਸੰਗਾ ॥
an-din soochay har gun sangaa.
The life of those is immaculate who always sing the praises of God.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਥ ਬਣਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਾਕਤ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
mithi-aa janam saakat sansaaraa.
Completely wasteful is the coming of a faithless cynic in the world.
ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਜਨੁ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਰਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
raam bhagat jan rahai niraaraa. ||2||
The humble devotee of God remains unattached to Maya. ||2||
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ) ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਸੂਚੀ ਕਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥
soochee kaa-i-aa har gun gaa-i-aa.
The body which sings the praises of God is remain immaculate.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਬਚਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
aatam cheen rahai liv laa-i-aa.
He remains attuned to God by reflecting on the self.
ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲੇ ਨੂੰ) ਪਛਾਣ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਦਿ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਹੀਰਾ ॥
aad apaar aprampar heeraa.
God is Primal, Infinite, beyond any limit and like a priceless jewel and
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਹੈ, ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ ਪਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਹੀਰੇ ਸਮਾਨ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਹੈ।
ਲਾਲਿ ਰਤਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥੩॥
laal rataa mayraa man Dheeraa. ||3||
my mind is totally content and imbued with His love. ||3||
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਤੇ ਸੰਤੁਸ਼ਟ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ l
ਕਥਨੀ ਕਹਹਿ ਕਹਹਿ ਸੇ ਮੂਏ ॥
kathnee kaheh kaheh say moo-ay
piritually dead are those who merely keep on saying so many great things about God without any merits of devotional worship.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਹੀ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ
ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਤੂੰ ਹੈ ॥
so parabh door naahee parabh tooN hai.
O’ God, You are right here, not far from those who are detached from Maya.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਾਂਦੇ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਤੂੰ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈਂ l
ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਛਾਇਆ ॥
sabh jag daykhi-aa maa-i-aa chhaa-i-aa.
The entire world seems under the influence of Maya to those,
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੪॥੧੭॥
naanak gurmat naam Dhi-aa-i-aa. ||4||17||
who through the Guru’s teachings meditate on Naam, O’ Nanak. ||4||17||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧੭॥
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਤਿਤੁਕਾ ॥

Raag Aasaa, Titukas (three lines), the First Guru:
ਕੋਈ ਭੀਖਕੁ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਖਾਇ ॥
ko-ee bheekhak bheekhi-aa khaa-ay.
In this world someone is a beggar surviving on charity,
ਕੋਈ ਮੰਗਤਾ ਭਿੱਛਿਆ (ਮੰਗ ਮੰਗ ਕੇ) ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕੋਈ ਰਾਜਾ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
ko-ee raajaa rahi-aa samaa-ay.
and someone is a king absorbed in his kingdom and power.
ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਰਾਜਾ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਰਾਜ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਮਾਨੁ ਕਿਸੈ ਅਪਮਾਨੁ ॥
kis hee maan kisai apmaan.
One receives honor and another dishonor.
ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਦਰ ਮਿਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਨਿਰਾਦਰੀ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ
ਢਾਹਿ ਉਸਾਰੇ ਧਰੇ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
dhaahi usaaray Dharay Dhi-aan.
Someone only keeps making and unmaking different plans in one’s mind.
ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਲੱਡੂ ਭੋਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਕਈ ਸਲਾਹਾਂ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਢਾਂਹਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਵਡਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
tujh tay vadaa naahee ko-ay.
O’ God, no one is greater than You.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੈਥੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਵੱਡਾ ਨਹੀਂ (ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੈਥੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਕਿਸੁ ਵੇਖਾਲੀ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
kis vaykhaalee changa ho-ay. ||1||
So whom should I present to You? Who is better than You? ||1||
ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਾਂ, ਜੋ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਅੱਛਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਮੈ ਤਾਂ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥
mai taaN naam tayraa aaDhaar.
Your Name is my only support
ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ l
ਤੂੰ ਦਾਤਾ ਕਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tooN daataa karanhaar kartaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
You are the Great Giver, the Doer and the Creator of the universe. ||1||Pause||
ਤੂੰ ਹੀ (ਸਭ ਦਾਤਾਂ) ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਵਾਟ ਨ ਪਾਵਉ ਵੀਗਾ ਜਾਉ ॥
vaat na paava-o veegaa jaa-o.
I cannot find the right path in life and I keep following the wrong path.
ਮੈਂ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ, ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ
ਦਰਗਹ ਬੈਸਣ ਨਾਹੀ ਥਾਉ ॥
dargeh baisan naahee thaa-o.
Therefore, there will be no place for me in Your court.
ਤੇਰੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਮਨ ਕਾ ਅੰਧੁਲਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਬੰਧੁ ॥
man kaa anDhulaa maa-i-aa kaa banDh.
I am totally ignorant, I am entangled in the love of Maya.
ਮੈਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ, ਮਨ ਦਾ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹਾਂ l
ਖੀਨ ਖਰਾਬੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਿਤ ਕੰਧੁ ॥
kheen kharaab hovai nit kanDh.
Every day my body is wearing off and growing weak.
ਮੇਰੀ ਦੇਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਾਸ ਤੇ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਖਾਣ ਜੀਵਣ ਕੀ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਆਸ ॥
khaan jeevan kee bahutee aas.
I keep high hopes to eat and to live longer,
ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਖਾਣ ਤੇ ਜੀਊਣ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਲੇਖੈ ਤੇਰੈ ਸਾਸ ਗਿਰਾਸ ॥੨॥
laykhai tayrai saas giraas. ||2||
but I don’t realize that You keep account of my every breath and morsel. ||2||
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਚੇਤਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਕਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਇਕ ਇਕ ਸਾਹ ਤੇ ਇਕ ਇਕ ਗਿਰਾਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਹਿਸਾਬ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਦੇਇ ॥
ahinis anDhulay deepak day-ay.
Day and night God blesses even the blind (spiritually ignorant) person with the light of divine knowledge.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਇਤਨਾ ਦਿਆਲ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਰਗੇ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ (ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ) ਦੀਵਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਭਉਜਲ ਡੂਬਤ ਚਿੰਤ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
bha-ojal doobat chint karay-i.
He worries about the one who is drowning in the dreadful worldly ocean of vices.
ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਡੁਬਦੇ ਦਾ ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਹਹਿ ਸੁਣਹਿ ਜੋ ਮਾਨਹਿ ਨਾਉ ॥ ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਜਾਉ ॥
kaheh suneh jo maaneh naa-o. ha-o balihaarai taakai jaa-o.
I dedicate myself to those, Who meditate, listen and believe in God’s Name,
ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਸਰਧਾ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਏਕ ਕਹੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
naanak ayk kahai ardaas.
O’ God, Nanak makes only one supplication;
ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੩॥
jee-o pind sabh tayrai paas. ||3||
I surrender my body and soul to You, please save me as You wish. ||3||
ਕਿ ਸਾਡੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਤੇ ਸਾਡਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਤੇਰੇ ਹੀ ਆਸਰੇ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਜਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਹਿ ਜਪੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
jaaN tooN deh japee tayraa naa-o.
O’ God, when You bless me with Naam only then I can meditate on Your Name,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਦੋਂ ਤੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
ਦਰਗਹ ਬੈਸਣ ਹੋਵੈ ਥਾਉ ॥
dargeh baisan hovai thaa-o.
and I may attain my place in Your presence.
ਤੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬੈਠਣ ਲਈ ਥਾਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਾਂ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
jaaN tuDh bhaavai taa durmat jaa-ay.
When it pleases You only then my evil intellect will go away,
ਜਦੋਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਭੈੜੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਆਇ ॥
gi-aan ratan man vasai aa-ay.
and the precious divine knowledge will come to dwell in my mind.
ਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਗਿਆਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਕੇ ਵੱਸ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ॥
nadar karay taa satgur milai.
When God shows His grace then one meets the true Guru,
ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦ ਆਦਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਰੈ ॥੪॥੧੮॥
paranvat naanak bhavjal tarai. ||4||18||
and he crosses over the terrifying world-ocean of vices, submits Nanak. ||4||18||
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧੮॥
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਪੰਚਪਦੇ ॥

ਦੁਧ ਬਿਨੁ ਧੇਨੁ ਪੰਖ ਬਿਨੁ ਪੰਖੀ ਜਲ ਬਿਨੁ ਉਤਭੁਜ ਕਾਮਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
duDh bin Dhayn pankh bin pankhee jal bin ut-bhuj kaam naahee.
A cow without milk, a bird without wings and vegetation without water is of no use
ਦੁਧ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਗਾਂ, ਪਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਗੈਰ ਪਰਿੰਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਗੈਰ ਬਨਾਸਪਤੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਕਿਆ ਸੁਲਤਾਨੁ ਸਲਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਅੰਧੀ ਕੋਠੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧॥
ki-aa sultaan salaam vihoonaa anDhee kothee tayraa naam naahee. ||1||
Just as a king without respect is not a true ruler, similarly O’ God, the heart devoid of Your Name is like a dark room. ||1||
ਉਹ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ ਕਾਹਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਸਲਾਮ ਨ ਕਰੇ? ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਨ ਹੋਵੇ ਉਹ ਇਕ ਹਨੇਰੀ ਕੋਠੜੀ ਹੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਕੀ ਵਿਸਰਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
kee visrahi dukh bahutaa laagai.
O’ God, why do You forsake me? It causes me great spiritual pain.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਵਿਸਾਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ? ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿਸਰਿਆਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬੜਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਦੁੱਖ ਵਾਪਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਤੂੰ ਵਿਸਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
dukh laagai tooN visar naahee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Yes O’ God, please don’t go away from my heart because it causes me severe spiritual pain. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਤੋਂ ਨਾਹ ਵਿਸਰ ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਦੁੱਖ ਵਾਪਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਅਖੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਜੀਭ ਰਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੰਨੀ ਪਵਣੁ ਨ ਵਾਜੈ ॥
akhee anDh jeebh ras naahee kannee pavan na vaajai.
(In old age), the eyes grow blind, the tongue cannot enjoy any taste and the ears can’t hear any sound,
ਅੱਖਾਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਆਉਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੀਭ ਵਿਚ ਖਾਣ-ਪੀਣ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਮਾਣਨ ਦੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ, ਕੰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਰਾਗ ਆਦਿਕ) ਦੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁਣਾਈ ਦੇਂਦੀ,
ਚਰਣੀ ਚਲੈ ਪਜੂਤਾ ਆਗੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਫਲ ਲਾਗੇ ॥੨॥
charnee chalai pajootaa aagai vin sayvaa fal laagay. ||2||
and he walks only when supported by someone else; even then one does not meditate on God’s Name and face these consequences. ||2||
ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਆਸਰਾ ਦਿੱਤਿਆਂ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਹੀ, ਉਹ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੁੰਞਾ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਫਲ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਅਖਰ ਬਿਰਖ ਬਾਗ ਭੁਇ ਚੋਖੀ ਸਿੰਚਿਤ ਭਾਉ ਕਰੇਹੀ ॥
akhar birakh baag bhu-ay chokhee sinchit bhaa-o karayhee.
Those who grow the trees of Guru’s words in the land of their pure hearts and irrigate these with the water of loving devotion,
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁਅੱਛ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਦੀ ਭੁਏਂ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਰੂਪ ਬਾਗ਼ ਦੇ ਰੁੱਖ ਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੂਪ ਪਾਣੀ ਸਿੰਜਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਸਭਨਾ ਫਲੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਏਕੋ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਲੇਹੀ ॥੩॥
sabhnaa fal laagai naam ayko bin karmaa kaisay layhee. ||3||
all these trees of Guru’s words bear the fruit of God’s Name but without God’s grace no one receives this gift of Naam. ||3||
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਪੌਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਫਲ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ; ਪਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਹ ਦਾਤਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ ॥੩॥
ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਤੇਤੇ ਸਭਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਫਲੁ ਕਿਸੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
jaytay jee-a taytay sabh tayray vin sayvaa fal kisai naahee.
O’ God, all these beings are Yours, no one can unite with You which is the reward of human life without meditation on Naam.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੇ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਤੇਰਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਲਾਭ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ।
ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜੀਉ ਰਹੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੪॥
dukh sukh bhaanaa tayraa hovai vin naavai jee-o rahai naahee. ||4||
Pain and pleasure come by Your Will; human soul cannot remain calm without the support of Your Name. ||4||
ਗ਼ਮੀ ਤੇ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜਾ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੈ। ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਟੇਕ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਿੰਦ ਅਡੋਲ ਰਹਿ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ ॥੪॥
ਮਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਕੈਸਾ ਜਾ ਜੀਵਾ ਤਾਂ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
mat vich maran jeevan hor kaisaa jaa jeevaa taaN jugat naahee.
To remove one’s ego through the Guru’s teachings is the real life. Living any other way is waste of human life.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਮਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦਾ ਮਰ ਜਾਣਾ-ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ, ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਰਥੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁੱਕਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ l
ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜੀਵਾਲੇ ਜੀਆ ਜਹ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਹ ਰਾਖੁ ਤੁਹੀ ॥੫॥੧੯॥
kahai naanak jeevaalay jee-aa jah bhaavai tah raakh tuhee. ||5||19||
Nanak says, O’ God it is You who sustains all beings; please save us, however You please. ||5||19||
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਣਧਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਥੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੈ ਉਥੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਰੱਖ
