ਨਿਧਿ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪੂਰੇ ॥
niDh niDhaan har amrit pooray.
Those whose hearts are brimful with the ambrosial nectar of God’s Name, the treasure of virtues.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਸਭ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਤਹ ਬਾਜੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਨਹਦ ਤੂਰੇ ॥੩੬॥
tah baajay naanak anhad tooray. ||36||
O Nanak, they feel so blissful as if the continuous celestial melody from various musical instruments vibrates within them. ||36||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਕ ਐਸਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਸਭ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਾਜੇ ਵੱਜ ਰਹੇ ਹੋਣ ॥੩੬॥

ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਤਜਿ ਪਰਪੰਚ ਮੋਹ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥
pat raakhee gur paarbarahm taj parpanch moh bikaar.
The honor of the one who sheds worldly attachments, hypocrisy and other such evils is saved by the Guru, the embodiment of God.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਠੱਗੀ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਕਾਰ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਤਿਆਗ ਦਿੱਤੇ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨੇ ਰੱਖ ਲਈ l
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਊ ਆਰਾਧੀਐ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
naanak so-oo aaraaDhee-ai ant na paaraavaar. ||1||
O’ Nanak, we should meditate on God whose virtues and glory has no limit. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਅਰਾਧਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ, ॥੧॥

ਪਪਾ ਪਰਮਿਤਿ ਪਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
papaa parmit paar na paa-i-aa.
Pappa (an alphabet): God is beyond any estimation; His limits cannot be found.
ਹਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਦਾ ਅੰਦਾਜ਼ਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗ ਸਕਦਾ, ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਅਗਮ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥
patit paavan agam har raa-i-aa.
The Sovereign God is incomprehensible and Purifier of sinners.
ਉਹ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਹੈ, ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਡਿੱਗੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਹੋਤ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਕੋਟ ਅਪਰਾਧੂ ॥
hot puneet kot apraaDhoo.
Millions of those sinners become immaculate,
ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ॥
amrit naam jaapeh mil saaDhoo.
who follow the Guru’s teachings and meditate on the ambrosial Naam.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਪਰਪਚ ਧ੍ਰੋਹ ਮੋਹ ਮਿਟਨਾਈ ॥
parpach Dharoh moh mitnaaee.
Hypocrisy, fraud and emotional attachment are eliminated of the one,
ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਠੱਗੀ ਫ਼ਰੇਬ ਮੋਹ ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਆਪਿ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥
jaa ka-o raakho aap gusaa-ee.
whom You Yourself save, O’ the Master of the World.
ਹੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ! ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਸਿਰ ਸੋਊ ॥
paatisaahu chhatar sir so-oo.
God Himself is the Supreme King, with the royal canopy over His Head.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸ਼ਾਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਅਸਲ ਛੱਤਰ-ਧਾਰੀ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਦੂਸਰ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਊ ॥੩੭॥
naanak doosar avar na ko-oo. ||37||
O’ Nanak, none other is equal to Him . ||37||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਦੂਜਾ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਕਰਨ ਜੋਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ॥੩੭॥

ਫਾਹੇ ਕਾਟੇ ਮਿਟੇ ਗਵਨ ਫਤਿਹ ਭਈ ਮਨਿ ਜੀਤ ॥
faahay kaatay mitay gavan fatih bha-ee man jeet.
By controlling the mind, victory over evil impulses is attained, bonds of Maya are snapped and wandering after worldly riches vanishes.
ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਤਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਜਿੱਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਕੱਟੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਪਿਛੇ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਥਿਤ ਪਾਈ ਫਿਰਨ ਮਿਟੇ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਤ ॥੧॥
naanak gur tay thit paa-ee firan mitay nit neet. ||1||
O’ Nanak,when the Guru blesses the stability of mind, the wandering after worldly things ends. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਅਤੇ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਦਾ ਆਵਾਗਊਣ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥

ਫਫਾ ਫਿਰਤ ਫਿਰਤ ਤੂ ਆਇਆ ॥
fafaa firat firat too aa-i-aa.
Faffa (alphabet): O’ my friend, you have wandered through many births in different species and
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਤੂੰ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਆਇਆ ਹੈਂ,
ਦ੍ਰੁਲਭ ਦੇਹ ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
darulabh dayh kalijug meh paa-i-aa.
now you have been blessed with the precious human life in the world.
ਹੁਣ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਬੜੀ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਫਿਰਿ ਇਆ ਅਉਸਰੁ ਚਰੈ ਨ ਹਾਥਾ ॥
fir i-aa a-osar charai na haathaa.
You may never get this opportunity again.
ਅਜੇਹਾ (ਸੋਹਣਾ) ਮੌਕਾ ਫਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ।
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਤਉ ਕਟੀਅਹਿ ਫਾਸਾ ॥
naam japahu ta-o katee-ah faasaa.
If you meditate on Naam, your worldly bonds of Maya would be cut away.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪੇਂਗਾ, ਤਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਕੱਟੇ ਜਾਣਗੇ।
ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵਨ ਜਾਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
fir fir aavan jaan na ho-ee.
You shall not have to go through the cycles of birth and death.
ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਇਗਾ।
ਏਕਹਿ ਏਕ ਜਪਹੁ ਜਪੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
aykeh ayk japahu jap so-ee.
Therefore, always meditate on God alone.
ਕੇਵਲ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਜਾਪ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ।
ਕਰਹੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰੇ ॥
karahu kirpaa parabh karnaihaaray.
O’ the creator-God, bestow Your mercy and
ਹੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! , ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰ,
ਮੇਲਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਚਾਰੇ ॥੩੮॥
mayl layho naanak baychaaray. ||38||
unite this helpless being, Nanak, with Yourself. ||38||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅੱਗੇ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਆਖ-) ਇਸ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਲੈ ॥੩੮॥

ਬਿਨਉ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਗੁਪਾਲ ॥
bin-o sunhu tum paarbarahm deen da-i-aal gupaal.
O’ all pervading God, merciful Master of the meek, listen to this prayer of mine,
ਹੇ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ! ਹੇ ਦੀਨਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ! ਹੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਪਾਲਣਹਾਰ! ਮੇਰੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸੁਣ,
ਸੁਖ ਸੰਪੈ ਬਹੁ ਭੋਗ ਰਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਰਵਾਲ ॥੧॥
sukh sampai baho bhog ras naanak saaDh ravaal. ||1||
Nanak says, for him the service of the saints is such a wealth that it provides him with all comforts and the enjoyment of many pleasures. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ ਕਿ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨ-ਧੂੜ ਹੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਧਨ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਤੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਰਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੋਗ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਜਾਪੇ ॥੧॥

ਬਬਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਜਾਨਤ ਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ॥
babaa barahm jaanat tay barahmaa.
Babba, (alphabet): The true brahmans are those who understand God’s will.
ਅਸਲ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਉਹ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਬੈਸਨੋ ਤੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਚ ਧਰਮਾ ॥
baisno tay gurmukh such Dharmaa.
The true vaishnavas (devotees) are those who follow the Guru’s teachings and practice the religion of spiritual purity.
ਅਸਲ ਵੈਸ਼ਨੋ ਉਹ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਦੇ ਫ਼ਰਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਲਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਬੀਰਾ ਆਪਨ ਬੁਰਾ ਮਿਟਾਵੈ ॥
beeraa aapan buraa mitaavai.
The truly brave person is the one who eradicates his own evil intellect and
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੂਰਮਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਬੁਰਾ ਮੰਗਣ ਦੇ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਦਾ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਮਿਟਾ ਦੇਵੇ।
ਤਾਹੂ ਬੁਰਾ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨਹੀ ਆਵੈ ॥
taahoo buraa nikat nahee aavai.
no evil thoughts come in his mind.
ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਚਿਤਵੀ ਬੁਰਾਈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦੀ।
ਬਾਧਿਓ ਆਪਨ ਹਉ ਹਉ ਬੰਧਾ ॥
baaDhi-o aapan ha-o ha-o banDhaa.
One remains bound by the chains of one’s own ego and self conceit.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਦੋਸੁ ਦੇਤ ਆਗਹ ਕਉ ਅੰਧਾ ॥
dos dayt aagah ka-o anDhaa.
The spiritually blind blames others for all his problems.
ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਗਾੜ ਦਾ) ਦੋਸ ਇਹ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਤੇ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਾਤ ਚੀਤ ਸਭ ਰਹੀ ਸਿਆਨਪ ॥
baat cheet sabh rahee si-aanap.
But all this smart talks and clever tricks are of no use at all.
ਪਰ ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਿਆਣਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੇਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਜਿਸਹਿ ਜਨਾਵਹੁ ਸੋ ਜਾਨੈ ਨਾਨਕ ॥੩੯॥
jisahi janaavhu so jaanai naanak. ||39||
O’ God, only that person understands the righteous life style whom You Yourself inspire, says Nanak. ||39||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅਗੇ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ) ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਇਸ ਸੁਚੱਜੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਉਹੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩੯॥

ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨ ਅਘ ਦੂਖ ਨਾਸ ਮਨਹਿ ਅਰਾਧਿ ਹਰੇ ॥
bhai bhanjan agh dookh naas maneh araaDh haray.
With loving devotion meditate on God, the destroyer of fear, sins and sorrows.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਭ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ, ਸਾਰੇ ਡਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖ।
ਸੰਤਸੰਗ ਜਿਹ ਰਿਦ ਬਸਿਓ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਨ ਭ੍ਰਮੇ ॥੧॥
satsang jih rid basi-o naanak tay na bharamay. ||1||
O’ Nanak, in whose heart God comes to dwell in the holy congregation, they do not wander in illusion. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਹਰੀ ਆ ਟਿਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੇ ॥੧॥

ਭਭਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਮਿਟਾਵਹੁ ਅਪਨਾ ॥

Bhabha, an alphabet: Cast out your worldly doubt and delusion
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਭਟਕਣ ਦੀ ਬਾਣ ਮਿਟਾ ਦਿਓ।
ਇਆ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਸਗਲ ਹੈ ਸੁਪਨਾ ॥
i-aa sansaar sagal hai supnaa.
because this entire world is like a dream.
ਇਹ ਸਮੂਹ ਜਗਤ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਹੈ
ਭਰਮੇ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਾ ॥
bharmay sur nar dayvee dayvaa.
The angels, human beings, gods and goddesses are known to be deluded in doubt.
(ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਚੋਜ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਸੁਰਗੀ ਜੀਵ, ਮਨੁੱਖ, ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ (ਸੁਣੀਦੇ ਰਹੇ)।
ਭਰਮੇ ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੇਵਾ ॥
bharmay siDh saaDhik barahmayvaa.
Even the yogis, adepts and angel like Brahma are known to wander in illusion.
ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪੁੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੋਗੀ, ਸਾਧਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਜੋਗੀ, ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਵਰਗੇ ਭੀ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪਿਛੇ) ਭਟਕਦੇ (ਸੁਣੀਦੇ) ਰਹੇ,
ਭਰਮਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਡਹਕਾਏ ॥
bharam bharam maanukh dahkaa-ay.
Wandering repeatedly in this illusion has ruined many human beings.
(ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ) ਬੰਦੇ (ਮਾਇਕ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਭਟਕ ਭਟਕ ਕੇ ਧੋਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਚਲੇ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ,
ਦੁਤਰ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖਮ ਇਹ ਮਾਏ ॥
dutar mahaa bikham ih maa-ay.
It is very difficult to swim across this treacherous ocean of Maya.
ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਇਕ ਐਸਾ ਮਹਾਨ ਔਖਾ (ਸਮੁੰਦਰ) ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਤਰਨਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਕਠਨ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਭੈ ਮੋਹ ਮਿਟਾਇਆ ॥
gurmukh bharam bhai moh mitaa-i-aa.
Those Guru’s followers who have removed all superstition, fear and worldly attachment.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਪਿਛੇ) ਭਟਕਣਾ, ਸਹਮ ਤੇ ਮੋਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਿਟਾ ਲਏ l
ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਹ ਪਰਮ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪੦॥

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੪੦॥

ਮਾਇਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧੀ ਮਨੁ ਲਪਟਿਓ ਤਿਹ ਸੰਗ ॥
maa-i-aa dolai baho biDhee man lapti-o tih sang.
In many different ways, human mind keeps wavering for the sake of Maya and remains clinging to it.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਕਈ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਹੀ ਡੋਲਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਚੰਬੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਾਗਨ ਤੇ ਜਿਹ ਤੁਮ ਰਖਹੁ ਸੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਹਿ ਰੰਗ ॥੧॥
maagan tay jih tum rakhahu so naanak naameh rang. ||1||
O’ God, the one whom You restrain from begging only for worldly wealth is imbued with the love of Your Name, says Nanak. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਨਿਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਹੀ ਮੰਗਣ ਤੋਂ ਵਰਜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਉਹ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

ਮਮਾ ਮਾਗਨਹਾਰ ਇਆਨਾ ॥ ਦੇਨਹਾਰ ਦੇ ਰਹਿਓ ਸੁਜਾਨਾ ॥
mamaa maaganhaar i-aanaa.daynhaar day rahi-o sujaanaa.
Mamma, an alphabet: How ignorant is the beggar who doesn’t realize that the all-knowing Giver is already giving us so many things, even without our asking.
ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਜੀਵ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਮਝਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਦਿਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਸਭ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਦੇਈ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੋ ਦੀਨੋ ਸੋ ਏਕਹਿ ਬਾਰ ॥
jo deeno so aykeh baar.
Whatever God has to give, He gives all at one time.
ਜੋ ਕੁਛ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਦੇਣਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੋ ਵਾਰੀ ਹੀ ਦੇ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਕਹ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥
man moorakh kah karahi pukaar.
O foolish mind, why do you complain, and cry out so loud?
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਸਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਹੀ ਤਰਲੇ ਲੈ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ?
ਜਉ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਤਉ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਬੀਆ ॥
ja-o maageh ta-o maageh bee-aa.
Whenever you ask for something, you ask for things other than Naam;
ਤੂੰ ਜਦੋਂ ਭੀ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹੈਂ (ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਹੀ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ,
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਕੁਸਲ ਨ ਕਾਹੂ ਥੀਆ ॥
jaa tay kusal na kaahoo thee-aa.
from those things, no one has ever attained spiritual peace.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਕਦੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ।
ਮਾਗਨਿ ਮਾਗ ਤ ਏਕਹਿ ਮਾਗ ॥
maagan maag ta aykeh maag.
If you must ask for something then ask only for Naam,
ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਮੰਗ ਮੰਗਣੀ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਮੰਗ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਪਰਹਿ ਪਰਾਗ ॥੪੧॥
naanak jaa tay pareh paraag. ||41||
by which you would swim across the ocean of Maya, says Nanak. ||41||
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਤੂੰ ਮਾਇਕ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਤੋਂ ਪਰਲੇ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਏਂ ॥੪੧॥
