ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਨੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਹੋਤ ਜਾਤ ਸਭੁ ਧੂਰ ॥੧॥
naam bihoonay naankaa hot jaat sabh Dhoor. ||1||
O’ Nanak, all those who are without the wealth of God’s Name are being reduced to dust. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।

ਧਧਾ ਧੂਰਿ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਜਨੂਆ ॥
DhaDhaa Dhoor puneet tayray janoo-aa.
Dhadha (alphabet): O’ God, sacred is the humble service of Your saints.
ਧ -ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ (ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ) ਹੈ।
ਧਨਿ ਤੇਊ ਜਿਹ ਰੁਚ ਇਆ ਮਨੂਆ ॥
Dhan tay-oo jih ruch i-aa manoo-aa.
Blessed are those in whose minds is the longing for this service.
ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ ਧੂੜ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਹੈ।
ਧਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਬਾਛਹਿ ਸੁਰਗ ਨ ਆਛਹਿ ॥
Dhan nahee baachheh surag na aachheh.
They do not seek worldly wealth, and they do not desire paradise.
ਅਜੇਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲਾ ਧਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੋੜਦੇ, ਸੁਰਗ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦੇ,
ਅਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸਾਧ ਰਜ ਰਾਚਹਿ ॥
at pari-a pareet saaDh raj raacheh.
They always remain deeply absorbed in the love of their beloved God and the humble service of His saint.
ਉਹ ਤਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਵਿਚ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨ-ਧੂੜ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਧੰਧੇ ਕਹਾ ਬਿਆਪਹਿ ਤਾਹੂ ॥
DhanDhay kahaa bi-aapahi taahoo.
How can worldly affairs (bonds of Maya) entangle those,
ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਕਾਰ-ਵਿਹਾਰ (ਮਾਇਆ) ਦੇ ਕੋਈ ਜੰਜਾਲ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੇ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੇ,
ਜੋ ਏਕ ਛਾਡਿ ਅਨ ਕਤਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਹੂ ॥
jo ayk chhaad an kateh na jaahoo.
who go nowhere else except God?
ਜੋ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਪਾਸੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੇ।
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹੀਐ ਦੀਓ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਮ ॥
jaa kai hee-ai dee-o parabh naam.
In whose heart God has instilled His Name,
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਸਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਪੂਰਨ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥੪॥
naanak saaDh pooran bhagvaan. ||4||
O Nanak, they are the perfect saints, the embodiment of God. ||4||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਪੂਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਹਨ

ਅਨਿਕ ਭੇਖ ਅਰੁ ਙਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਮਨਹਠਿ ਮਿਲਿਅਉ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
anik bhaykh ar nyi-aan Dhi-aan manhath mili-a-o na ko-ay.
No one has ever realized God by wearing numerous kinds of religious robes, entering into religious discussions and stubborn-mindedness.
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਭੇਖ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ, ਧਰਮ-ਚਰਚਾ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ, ਅਤੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਹਠ ਨਾਲ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਭਈ ਭਗਤੁ ਙਿਆਨੀ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥
kaho naanak kirpaa bha-ee bhagat nyi-aanee so-ay. ||1||
Nanak says, only that person upon whom God has bestowed His Grace is a true devotee and divinely wise. ||1||
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਹੀ ਭਗਤ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ l

ਙੰਙਾ ਙਿਆਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਮੁਖ ਬਾਤਉ ॥
nyanyaa nyi-aan nahee mukh baata-o.
Nganga (alphabet): Spiritual wisdom is not obtained by mere words of mouth.
ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਮੂੰਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ,ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮ ਗਿਆਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਅਨਿਕ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਿ ਭਾਤਉ ॥
anik jugat saastar kar bhaata-o.
It is also not obtained through the various rituals described in the Shastras.
ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਅਨੇਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀਆਂ ਜੁਗਤੀਆਂ ਵਰਤਿਆਂ ਭੀ ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ
ਙਿਆਨੀ ਸੋਇ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ ਸੋਊ ॥
nyi-aanee so-ay jaa kai darirh so-oo.
That person alone is a divinely wise in whose heart God is firmly enshrined.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਹੀ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਪੱਕਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਬਣੇ।
ਕਹਤ ਸੁਨਤ ਕਛੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਹੋਊ ॥
kahat sunat kachh jog na ho-oo.
Union with God does not take place simply by describing or listening to the holy books.
ਨਿਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਆਖਣ ਸੁਣਨ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਮਿਲਾਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ
ਙਿਆਨੀ ਰਹਤ ਆਗਿਆ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਜਾ ਕੈ ॥
nyi-aanee rahat aagi-aa darirh jaa kai.
He alone is spiritually wise, who remains firmly committed to God’s Command.
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਪੱਕੀ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹੇ, ਉਹੀ ਅਸਲ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਹੈ।
ਉਸਨ ਸੀਤ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਸਭ ਤਾ ਕੈ ॥
usan seet samsar sabh taa kai.
For him, sorrow and pleasure are alike.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰਾ ਦੁਖ-ਸੁਖ ਇਕ-ਸਮਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਙਿਆਨੀ ਤਤੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
nyi-aanee tat gurmukh beechaaree.
The true wise person who reflects upon the essence of reality through the Guru.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਜਗਤ-ਦੇ-ਮੂਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰਵਾਨ ਬਣ ਜਾਵੇ l
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ॥੫॥
naanak jaa ka-o kirpaa Dhaaree. ||5||
O, Nanak, is blessed by the grace of God. ||5||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ,

ਆਵਨ ਆਏ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਪਸੁ ਢੋਰ ॥
aavan aa-ay sarisat meh bin boojhay pas dhor.
The mortals have come to this world, but without realizing the purpose of human birth, they are like animals and beasts.
ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਹਾਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ ਸਮਝਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹ ਪਸ਼ੂ ਡੰਗਰ ਹੀ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੋ ਬੁਝੈ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਭਾਗ ਮਥੋਰ ॥੧॥
naanak gurmukh so bujhai jaa kai bhaag mathor. ||1||
O’ Nanak, by the Guru’s grace only those people realize the true purpose of human life in whose destiny it is so preordained.||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ ਚੰਗੀ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਲਿਖੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।

ਯਾ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਏਕਹਿ ਕਉ ਆਇਆ ॥
yaa jug meh aykeh ka-o aa-i-aa.
Mortal has come into this world to meditate on God.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਜਨਮਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਜਨਮਤ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
janmat mohi-o mohnee maa-i-aa.
But ever since birth, he has been allured by the enticing worldly wealth.
ਪਰ ਜੰਮਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਠਗਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਠੱਗ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗਰਭ ਕੁੰਟ ਮਹਿ ਉਰਧ ਤਪ ਕਰਤੇ ॥
garabh kunt meh uraDh tap kartay.
In the mother’s womb, mortals meditate on God hanging upside down.
(ਇਹ ਆਮ ਪਰਚਲਤ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਜੀਵ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਵਿਚ ਪੁੱਠੇ ਲਟਕੇ ਹੋਏ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਹਤੇ ॥
saas saas simrat parabh rahtay.
With each and every breath, they keep remembering God.
ਉਥੇ ਸੁਆਸ ਸੁਆਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਉਰਝਿ ਪਰੇ ਜੋ ਛੋਡਿ ਛਡਾਨਾ ॥
urajh paray jo chhod chhadaanaa.
But now, they are entangled in things which they must leave behind.
ਜਿਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਰੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਦੇਵਨਹਾਰੁ ਮਨਹਿ ਬਿਸਰਾਨਾ ॥
dayvanhaar maneh bisraanaa.
They forget the Great Giver from their minds.
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਨ ਤੋਂ ਭੁਲਾ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਧਾਰਹੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥
Dhaarahu kirpaa jisahi gusaa-ee.
O’ Master of the universe, only the one upon whom You bestow Your mercy,
ਹੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ,
ਇਤ ਉਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਸਰਹੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੬॥
it ut naanak tis bisrahu naahee. ||6||
O Nanak, does not forget You, here or hereafter. ||6||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨੋਂ ਤੂੰ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਸਰਦਾ l

ਆਵਤ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਬਿਨਾਸ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਆਗਿਆ ਭਿੰਨ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
aavat hukam binaas hukam aagi-aa bhinn na ko-ay.
It is according to God’s command that a person comes into this world and also perishes according to His command. No one is exempt from His order.
ਜੀਵ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਤੋਂ ਆਕੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਆਵਨ ਜਾਨਾ ਤਿਹ ਮਿਟੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥
aavan jaanaa tih mitai naanak jih man so-ay. ||1||
O’ Nanak, this cycle of birth and death stops only for those in whose heart dwells God. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਸਿਰਫ਼) ਉਸ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ (ਦਾ ਗੇੜ) ਮੁੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ (ਹੁਕਮ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ l

ਏਊ ਜੀਅ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਗ੍ਰਭ ਵਾਸੇ ॥
ay-oo jee-a bahut garabh vaasay.
These creatures have previously resided in many wombs.
ਇਹ ਜੀਵ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਾਸ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਮੀਠ ਜੋਨਿ ਫਾਸੇ ॥
moh magan meeth jon faasay.
Enticed by sweet worldly love, they have been trapped in reincarnations.
ਮਿੱਠੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਇਨਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਸਿ ਕੀਨੇ ॥
in maa-i-aa tarai gun bas keenay.
This Maya has kept them under control through its three modes.
ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੇ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ) ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਰ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਨ ਮੋਹ ਘਟੇ ਘਟਿ ਦੀਨੇ ॥
aapan moh ghatay ghat deenay.
Maya has overpowered each and every heart by its allurement.
ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੋਹ ਟਿਕਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਏ ਸਾਜਨ ਕਛੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
ay saajan kachh kahhu upaa-i-aa.
O friend, tell me some remedy
ਹੇ ਸੱਜਣ! ਕੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਇਲਾਜ ਦੱਸ,
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਤਰਉ ਬਿਖਮ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
jaa tay tara-o bikham ih maa-i-aa.
by which I may swim across this treacherous ocean of Maya.
ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਔਖੀ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ-ਰੂਪ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ) ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਸਕਾਂ।
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
kar kirpaa satsang milaa-ay.
Bestowing His mercy, those whom God unites with the holy congregation,
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਮਾਏ ॥੭॥
naanak taa kai nikat na maa-ay. ||7||
O Nanak, Maya (worldly attachment) does not even come near that person. ||7||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਮਾਇਆ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ (ਢੁਕ ਸਕਦੀ)

ਕਿਰਤ ਕਮਾਵਨ ਸੁਭ ਅਸੁਭ ਕੀਨੇ ਤਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ॥
kirat kamaavan subh asubh keenay tin parabh aap.
Dwelling in everyone, it is God Himself who is doing and has done all good and bad deeds.
(ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ) ਸਭ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ)।
ਪਸੁ ਆਪਨ ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਹਾ ਕਮਾਤਿ ॥੧॥
pas aapan ha-o ha-o karai naanak bin har kahaa kamaat. ||1||
O’ Nanak, indulging in self-conceit, the animal like mortal thinks that he has done these deeds and does not realize that nothing can be done without God’s will.|1|
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ

ਏਕਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਵਨਹਾਰਾ ॥
aykeh aap karaavanhaaraa.
God Himself makes mortals do their good and bad deeds.
ਜੀਵਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਾਵਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ,
ਆਪਹਿ ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥
aapeh paap punn bisthaaraa.
He Himself has spread the expanse of vices and virtues.
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਇਆ ਜੁਗ ਜਿਤੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਆਪਹਿ ਲਾਇਓ ॥
i-aa jug jit jit aapeh laa-i-o.
In this life, people are engaged in the task to which God has attached them.
ਇਸ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਚ ਜਿਸ ਜਿਸ ਪਾਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਧਰ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ),
ਸੋ ਸੋ ਪਾਇਓ ਜੁ ਆਪਿ ਦਿਵਾਇਓ ॥
so so paa-i-o jo aap divaa-i-o.
They receive what God Himself gives.
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਕੁਛ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਉਹ ਗ੍ਰਹਣ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਉਆ ਕਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਕੋਊ ॥
u-aa kaa ant na jaanai ko-oo.
No one knows the limits of God’s virtues.
ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣ ਸਕਦਾ,
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਕਰੈ ਸੋਊ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੋਊ ॥
jo jo karai so-oo fun ho-oo.
Whatever He does, comes to pass.
(ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਉਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਏਕਹਿ ਤੇ ਸਗਲਾ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥
aykeh tay saglaa bisthaaraa.
From the One Creator, the entire expanse of the universe has emanated.
ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ-ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਖਿਲਰਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰਨਹਾਰਾ ॥੮॥
naanak aap savaaranhaaraa. ||8||
O’ Nanak, it is He Himself who brings the mortals to the right path ||8||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਧੇ ਰਾਹੇ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ l

ਰਾਚਿ ਰਹੇ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਕੁਸਮ ਰੰਗ ਬਿਖ ਸੋਰ ॥
raach rahay banitaa binod kusam rang bikh sor.
people remain engrossed in sensual pleasures; but the tumult of Maya (worldly pleasures) is like the dye of the safflower, which fades away all too soon.
(ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ) ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਫੂੰ-ਫਾਂ ਕਸੁੰਭੇ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ (ਵਾਂਗ ਖਿਨ-ਭੰਗਰ ਹੀ ਹੈ)।
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਹ ਸਰਨੀ ਪਰਉ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਮੈ ਮੋਰ ॥੧॥
naanak tih sarnee para-o binas jaa-ay mai mor. ||1||
O’ Nanak, seek God’s refuge, so that your selfishness and self-conceit may vanish. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂ, ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਮਮਤਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ
