Raag Gauree Poorbee, Fifth Guru:
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkar satgur prasad.
One eternal God. Realized by the grace of the true Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਮਨਹੁ ਬਿਸਾਰੇ ॥
har har kabhoo na manhu bisaaray.
Never forsake God from your heart.
ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਤੋਂ ਨਾਹ ਵਿਸਾਰ।
ਈਹਾ ਊਹਾ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸਗਲ ਘਟਾ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
eehaa ooha sarab sukh-daata sagal ghata partipaaray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He is the bestower of all comforts here and hereafter and He is the Cherisher of all. ||1||Pause||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ, ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਰੀਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਮਹਾ ਕਸਟ ਕਾਟੈ ਖਿਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਚਿਤਾਰੇ ॥
mahaa kasat kaatai khin bheetar rasnaa naam chitaaray.
If one meditates on Naam, God gets rid of His problems in an instant.
ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰੇ। , ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵੱਡੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੀਤਲ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੂਖ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣੀ ਜਲਤੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
seetal saaNt sookh har sarnee jaltee agan nivaaray. ||1||
God extinguishes the fire of cravings for maya. Therefore soothing coolness, peace and tranquility prevail in His refuge. ||1||
ਹਰੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਬਲਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਬੁਝਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਣ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੀਤਲਤਾ, ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਤੇ ਆਨੰਦ ਹੀ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਗਰਭ ਕੁੰਡ ਨਰਕ ਤੇ ਰਾਖੈ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥
garabh kund narak tay raakhai bhavjal paar utaaray.
God saves us from the hellish pit of the womb and carries us across the terrifying world-ocean of vices.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਦੇ ਨਰਕ-ਕੁੰਡ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਆਰਾਧਤ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
charan kamal aaraaDhat man meh jam kee taraas bidaaray. ||2||
When we meditate on God’s Name, He dispels the fear of death. ||2||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਚਰਨ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਰਾਧਿਆਂ ਉਹ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਸਹਮ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਪੂਰਨ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ ਊਚਾ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥
pooran paarbarahm parmaysur oochaa agam apaaray.
The all-pervading God is perfect, supreme, unfathomable and infinite.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ, ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਹੈ, ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਤ ਧਿਆਵਤ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ਜੂਏ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਹਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
gun gaavat Dhi-aavat sukh saagar joo-ay janam na haaray. ||3||
By singing His praises and meditating on the ocean of peace, one does not lose the game of life. ||3||
ਉਸ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਆਰਾਧਿਆਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਵਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ॥੩॥
ਕਾਮਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿ ਲੋਭਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਨੁ ਲੀਨੋ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਕੇ ਦਾਤਾਰੇ ॥
kaam kroDh lobh mohi man leeno nirgun kay daataaray.
O’ the benevolent of the unvirtuous, my mind is engrossed in lust, anger, greed and emotional attachments.
ਹੇ (ਮੈਂ) ਗੁਣ-ਹੀਣ ਦੇ ਦਾਤਾਰ! ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਕਾਮ ਵਿਚ, ਕਰੋਧ ਵਿਚ, ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ, ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਅਪੁਨੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੇ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੩੮॥
kar kirpaa apuno naam deejai naanak sad balihaaray. ||4||1||138||
O’ Nanak, I dedicate myself to You forever. Please grant Your grace and bless me with Your Name. ||4||1||138||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਆਖ)-ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼, ਮੈਂ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੩੮॥

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਬਿਨਾ ॥
sukh naahee ray har bhagat binaa.
There is no peace without devotional worship of God.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ) ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਜੀਤਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਇਹੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਅਮੋਲਕੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਪਿ ਇਕ ਖਿਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jeet janam ih ratan amolak saaDhsangat jap ik khinaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Every moment you are in the holy congregation, meditate on God’s Name and win the game of this precious human life. ||1||Pause||
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਇਕ ਪਲ ਭਰ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਅਮੋਲਕੁ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਦੀ ਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਜਿੱਤ ਲੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸੁਤ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ॥ ਛੋਡਿ ਗਏ ਬਹੁ ਲੋਗ ਭੋਗ ॥੧॥
sut sampat banitaa binod. chhod ga-ay baho log bhog. ||1||
So many people have departed from this world after enjoying the pleasures of their families and wealth. ||1||
ਪੁੱਤਰ, ਧਨ, ਪਦਾਰਥ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਲਾਡ-ਪਿਆਰ-ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਲੋਕ- ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਮੌਜ-ਮੇਲੇ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਇਥੋਂ) ਚਲੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ। ॥੧॥
ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਰਾਜ ਰੰਗ ॥ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਚਲਿਓ ਹੈ ਮੂੜ ਨੰਗ ॥੨॥
haivar gaivar raaj rang. ti-aag chali-o hai moorh nang. ||2||
The foolish mortal ultimately departs empty handed from the world leaving behind all precious horses, elephants and the luxuries of dominions. ||2||
ਵਧੀਆ ਘੋੜੇ, ਵਧੀਆ ਹਾਥੀ ਤੇ ਹਕੂਮਤ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੌਜਾਂ-ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ (ਆਖ਼ਿਰ) ਨੰਗਾ ਹੀ (ਇਥੋਂ) ਤੁਰ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨ ਦੇਹ ਫੂਲਿਆ ॥ ਸੋ ਤਨੁ ਧਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਰੂਲਿਆ ॥੩॥
cho-aa chandan dayh fooli-aa.so tan Dhar sang rooli-aa. ||3||
The same scented body which was a source of pride, ends up as a pile of dust after death. ||3||
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਅਤਰ ਤੇ ਚੰਦਨ ਆਦਿਕ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਮਾਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਆਖ਼ਿਰ) ਮਿੱਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੁਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਮੋਹਿ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਜਾਨੈ ਦੂਰਿ ਹੈ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦਾ ਹਦੂਰਿ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੩੯॥
mohi mohi-aa jaanai door hai. kaho naanak sadaa hadoor hai. ||4||1||139||
Nanak says, God is ever present right beside us. But infatuated with worldly riches, one deems God as far away. ||4||1||139||
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਦਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਅੰਗ ਸੰਗ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ( ਪਰ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਕਿਤੇ ਦੂਰ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ। ॥੪॥੧॥੧੩੯॥

Raag Gauree, Fifth Guru:
ਮਨ ਧਰ ਤਰਬੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨੋ ॥
man Dhar tarbay har naam no.
O’ my mind, one swims across the world ocean by meditation on God’s Name.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਣ ਲਈ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਗਰ ਲਹਰਿ ਸੰਸਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਪਾਰ ਗਰਾਮਨੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saagar lahar sansaa sansaar gur bohith paar garaamano. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The Guru is a ship to cross the world-ocean filled with the waves of cynicism and doubt. ||1||Pause||
ਵਹਿਮ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੌਜਾ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਜਗਤ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਰਨ ਲਈ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਹਨ। ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਕਲਿ ਕਾਲਖ ਅੰਧਿਆਰੀਆ ॥
kal kaalakh anDhi-aaree-aa.
In Kalyug, Maya is a blemish that creates the darkness of ignorance in one’s mind.
ਕਲਜੁਗ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਇਕ ਐਸੀ ਕਾਲਖ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀਪਕ ਉਜਿਆਰੀਆ ॥੧॥
gur gi-aan deepak uji-aaree-aa. ||1||
The Guru’s divine wisdom illuminates the ignorant mind. ||1|
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀਵਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ (ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉੱਚੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ) ਚਾਨਣ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਬਿਖੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਪਸਰੀ ਅਤਿ ਘਨੀ ॥
bikh bikhi-aa pasree at ghanee.
The poison of Maya is spread out far and wide.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੰਘਣੀ ਖਿਲਰੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਉਬਰੇ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨੀ ॥੨॥
ubray jap jap har gunee. ||2||
People have saved themselves from the poisonous Maya by always remembering the virtues of God||2||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹੀ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਦੀ ਮਾਰ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਗਏ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਮਤਵਾਰੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੋਇਆ ॥
matvaaro maa-i-aa so-i-aa.
Engrossed in Maya, one is unaware of its illusions,
ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਵਿਚ) ਸੁੱਤਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟਤ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਖੋਇਆ ॥੩॥
gur bhaytat bharam bha-o kho-i-aa. ||3||
but by meeting the Guru he dispels his doubt and dread. ||3||
ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਿਆਂ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਭਟਕਣ ਤੇ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦਾ) ਸਹਮ-ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
kaho naanak ayk Dhi-aa-i-aa.
Nanak says, one who has meditated on God,
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਇਆ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੪੦॥
ghat ghat nadree aa-i-aa. ||4||2||140||
sees God in each and every heart. ||4||2||140||
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਦਿੱਸ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੪੦॥
ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Raag Gauree, Fifth Guru:
ਦੀਬਾਨੁ ਹਮਾਰੋ ਤੁਹੀ ਏਕ ॥
deebaan hamaaro tuhee ayk.
O’ God, You alone are my support.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਸੇਵਾ ਥਾਰੀ ਗੁਰਹਿ ਟੇਕ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sayvaa thaaree gureh tayk. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I perform Your devotional worship with the Guru’s grace. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਓਟ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਅਨਿਕ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
anik jugat nahee paa-i-aa.
In spite of trying different ways, I was unable to realize You.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਢੰਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਿਆ।
ਗੁਰਿ ਚਾਕਰ ਲੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
gur chaakar lai laa-i-aa. ||1||
Now the Guru has made me Your humble devotee and has yoked me to Your devotional worship. ||1||
(ਹੁਣ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਤੇਰਾ ਚਾਕਰ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ (ਤੇਰੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ) ਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਮਾਰੇ ਪੰਚ ਬਿਖਾਦੀਆ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਦਲੁ ਸਾਧਿਆ ॥੨॥
maaray panch bikhaadee-aa. gur kirpaa tay dal saaDhi-aa. ||2||
By the Guru’s grace, I have subdued the entire army of sinful tendencies and I have conquered the five rogues (lust, anger, greed, attachment, and ego). ||2||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਦੀ) ਫ਼ੌਜ ਕਾਬੂ ਕਰ ਲਈ ਹੈ(ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਪੰਜੇ ਝਗੜਾਲੂ ਵੈਰੀ ਮਾਰ ਮੁਕਾਏ ਹਨ,॥੨॥
ਬਖਸੀਸ ਵਜਹੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮ ॥ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ॥੩॥
bakhsees vajahu mil ayk naam.sookh sahj aanand bisraam. ||3||
One who is blessed with Naam, enjoys peace and true bliss. ||3||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ ਦੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਏ , ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦੇ ਸੁਖ ਆਨੰਦ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
