ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਢੋਈ ਨ ਲਹੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਝੂਠੁ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
dar ghar dho-ee na lahai dargeh jhooth khu-aar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
You will not find any shelter in God’s court, because falsehood is disgraced there.
ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਪਨਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਣੀ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਝੂਠ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਦੁਰਕਾਰਿਆ ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਆਪਿ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ਨ ਭੁਲਈ ਸਚਾ ਵਡ ਕਿਰਸਾਣੁ ॥
aap sujaan na bhul-ee sachaa vad kirsaan.
God is like a wise farmer who never makes mistakes.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਬੜਾ) ਸਿਆਣਾ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਗ਼ਲਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦਾ।
ਪਹਿਲਾ ਧਰਤੀ ਸਾਧਿ ਕੈ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇ ਦਾਣੁ ॥
pahilaa Dhartee saaDh kai sach naam day daan.
(Just as a farmer first prepares the ground to make it suitable for sowing seeds so that he gets a good crop) God similarly first prepares the heart of a person by inculcating in it divine virtues and then gives the gift (plants the seed) of Naam.
(ਜਿਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਮ-ਬੀਜ ਬੀਜਣਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਉਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਫਿਰ ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਬੀਜ ਬੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਏਕੁ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਵੈ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੨॥
na-o niDh upjai naam ayk karam pavai neesaan. |
Then there grows the crop of Naam, valuable like the nine treasures. And this blessed person receives the mark of God’s grace.
ਉਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਮ ਉੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਾਨੋ ਨੌ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ l ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਉਸਦੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕਬੂਲ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ l (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦਾ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਲੱਗ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।)
ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਜਾਣਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਕਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਚਜੁ ਅਚਾਰੁ ॥
gur ka-o jaan na jaan-ee ki-aa tis chaj achaar.
The person who knowingly does not understand or follow the Guru’s teachings has no sense of proper conduct in life.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਾਣ ਬੁੱਝ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗੀ) ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਜੀਵਨ-ਢੰਗ ਕੋਝਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਧੁਲੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਧ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ॥
anDhulai naam visaari-aa manmukh anDh gubaar.
That Manmukh (self-willed) is spiritually blind and he has forgotten God’s Name. He lives in complete darkness of spiritual ignorance.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਪੰਧ ਵਿਚ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਨ ਚੁਕਈ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥੩॥
aavan jaan na chuk-ee mar janmai ho-ay khu-aar. ||3||
His coming and going does not end: he keeps suffering in rounds of births and deaths.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁੱਕਦਾ, ਉਹ ਮਰਣ ਜੰਮਣ ਅੰਦਰ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਚੰਦਨੁ ਮੋਲਿ ਅਣਾਇਆ ਕੁੰਗੂ ਮਾਂਗ ਸੰਧੂਰੁ ॥
chandan mol anaa-i-aa kungoo maaNg sanDhoor.
To please her Master the soul- bride may adorn herself with all sorts of cosmetics,
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰ ਲਈ ਚੰਦਨ ਤੇ ਕੇਸਰ ਖ਼ਰੀਦ ਕੇ ਲਿਆਉਂਦੀਂ ਹੈ,
ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਬਹੁ ਘਣਾ ਪਾਨਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਕਪੂਰੁ ॥
cho-aa chandan baho ghanaa paanaa naal kapoor.
She uses mouth fresheners, and applies scent and perfume to her body,
ਉਹ ਊਦ ਤੇ ਚੰਨਣ ਦਾ ਅਤਰ ਦੇਹ ਨੂੰ ਮਲਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਸ਼ਕ-ਕਾਫੂਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਪਾਨ-ਬੀੜਾ ਖਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਜੇ ਧਨ ਕੰਤਿ ਨ ਭਾਵਈ ਤ ਸਭਿ ਅਡੰਬਰ ਕੂੜੁ ॥੪॥
jay Dhan kant na bhaav-ee ta sabh adambar koorh. ||4||
but if this soul- bride is not pleasing to her Master (God), then all these trappings are useless. (God can not be pleased by religious garbs and rituals)
ਪਰ ਜੇ ਉਹ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ (ਫਿਰ ਭੀ) ਚੰਗੀ ਨ ਲੱਗੀ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਉਹ ਵਿਖਾਵੇ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਏ l
ਸਭਿ ਰਸ ਭੋਗਣ ਬਾਦਿ ਹਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥
sabh ras bhogan baad heh sabh seegaar vikaar.
Her enjoyment of all pleasures is futile, and all her decorations are useless.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਵਰਤਣੇ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਚਲੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਸਜਾਵਟਾਂ ਭੀ ਬੇ-ਕਾਰ ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਭੇਦੀਐ ਕਿਉ ਸੋਹੈ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਿ ॥
jab lag sabad na bhaydee-ai ki-o sohai gurdu-aar.
Until she has been imbued with the Guru’s word, how can she get honored at God’s court?
ਜਦ ਤਾਈਂ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ ਵਿੰਨ੍ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ, ਤਦ ਤਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਭਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਧੰਨੁ ਸੁਹਾਗਣੀ ਜਿਨ ਸਹ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੫॥੧੩॥
naanak Dhan suhaaganee jin sah naal pi-aar. ||5||13||
O Nanak, blessed is that fortunate soul-bride, who is in love with her Master.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹੀ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ l

In Siree Raag, by the First Guru:
ਸੁੰਞੀ ਦੇਹ ਡਰਾਵਣੀ ਜਾ ਜੀਉ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
sunjee dayh daraavanee jaa jee-o vichahu jaa-ay.
When the soul departs, the body looks deserted and dreadful.
ਜਦੋਂ ਜਿੰਦ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਨਿਕਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਉੱਜੜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਡਰ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਾਹਿ ਬਲੰਦੀ ਵਿਝਵੀ ਧੂਉ ਨ ਨਿਕਸਿਓ ਕਾਇ ॥
bhaahi balandee vijhvee Dhoo-o na niksi-o kaa-ay.
The burning fire of life is extinguished, and the smoke of the breath no longer emerges.
ਜੀਵਨ-ਅਗਨੀ ਬੁੱਝ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਸੱਤਿਆ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ), ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਸਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ।
ਪੰਚੇ ਰੁੰਨੇ ਦੁਖਿ ਭਰੇ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥੧॥
panchay runnay dukh bharay binsay doojai bhaa-ay. ||1||
The five sense organs cry in grief for having been wasted through the love of things other than God.
ਪੰਜ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰੇ ਮਾਇਕ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਨਾਸ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਰਹੇ, ਉਹ ਵੀ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਰੋਏ l
ਮੂੜੇ ਰਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰਿ ॥
moorhay raam japahu gun saar.
O’ fool: remember God and His virtues with love and devotion.
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਜੀਵ! (ਉਸ ਅੰਤਲੀ ਦਸ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ।
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਸਭ ਮੁਠੀ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ha-umai mamtaa mohnee sabh muthee ahaNkaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Egotism and possessiveness are very enticing; egotistical pride has deceived everyone.
ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਠੱਗੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ l
ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੀ ਕਾਰੈ ਲਗਿ ॥
jinee naam visaari-aa doojee kaarai lag.
They who become engrossed in worldly pursuits have forgotten God,
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਨਿਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਵੀ ਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਲਾਗੇ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਿ ॥
dubiDhaa laagay pach mu-ay antar tarisnaa ag.
-attached to worldly things, and consumed by the fire of their desires, they are spiritually dead.
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਮੇਰ-ਤੇਰ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਰਹੇ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਭੜਕਦੀ ਰਹੀ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਖਿੱਝ ਸੜ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਮਰ ਗਏ।
ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਹੋਰਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਧੰਧੈ ਠਗਿ ॥੨॥
gur raakhay say ubray hor muthee DhanDhai thag. ||2||
Those who are protected by the Guru are saved; all others are cheated and plundered by deceitful worldly affairs.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਖੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਕੀਤੀ, ਉਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ-ਅੱਗ ਤੋਂ ਬੱਚ ਗਏ, ਬਾਕੀ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖੱਲਜਗਣ-ਠੱਗ ਨੇ ਠੱਗ ਲਿਆ l
ਮੁਈ ਪਰੀਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਗਇਆ ਮੁਆ ਵੈਰੁ ਵਿਰੋਧੁ ॥
mu-ee pareet pi-aar ga-i-aa mu-aa vair viroDh.
The one who follows Guru’s teachings, his worldly love vanishes along with all attachments, enmity and hatred,
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਵੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਾਇਕ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਵੈਰ-ਵਿਰੋਧ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ।
ਧੰਧਾ ਥਕਾ ਹਉ ਮੁਈ ਮਮਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ॥
DhanDhaa thakaa ha-o mu-ee mamtaa maa-i-aa kroDh.
all his worldly pursuits are over and his egotism, emotional attachment and anger ends.
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੀ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਹਉਮੈ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਵੀ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰੋਧੁ ॥੩॥
karam milai sach paa-ee-ai gurmukh sadaa niroDh. ||3||
The one who follows Guru’s teachings, always controls his senses and realizes God through His grace.
ਪਰ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਰੋਕ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸਚੀ ਕਾਰੈ ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥
sachee kaarai sach milai gurmat palai paa-ay.
By following Guru’s teachings and meditating on God’s Name, one realizes God.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਸੋ ਨਰੁ ਜੰਮੈ ਨਾ ਮਰੈ ਨਾ ਆਵੈ ਨਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
so nar jammai naa marai naa aavai naa jaa-ay.
Then, such a person is not subjected to cycles of birth and death.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਤੋਂ ਬੱਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਿ ਪਰਧਾਨੁ ਸੋ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੪॥੧੪॥
naanak dar parDhaan so dargahi paiDhaa jaa-ay. ||4||14||
O’ Nanak, that person is recognized as a dignitary and is honored in God’s court.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਸੁਰਖ਼ਰੂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਸਰੋਪਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲ ੧ ॥

Siree Raag, by the First Guru;
ਤਨੁ ਜਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਮਾਟੀ ਭਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਨੂਰੁ ॥
tan jal bal maatee bha-i-aa man maa-i-aa mohi manoor.
The body of a self conceited person is burnt to ashes in the fire of vices and his mind is rusted in the love of Maya. (worldly riches and power)
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸੜ ਬਲ ਕੇ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ, ਮਾਨੋ ਸੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਲੋਹਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਉਗਣ ਫਿਰਿ ਲਾਗੂ ਭਏ ਕੂਰਿ ਵਜਾਵੈ ਤੂਰੁ ॥
a-ugan fir laagoo bha-ay koor vajaavai toor.
The vices haunt his mind like enemies. Yet still such a person, engrossed in falsehood, keeps blowing the bugle of love for worldly riches.
ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ, ਉਹ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਕੂੜ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ) ਵਾਜਾ ਵਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਭਰਮਾਈਐ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਡੋਬੇ ਪੂਰੁ ॥੧॥
bin sabdai bharmaa-ee-ai dubiDhaa dobay poor. ||1||
Without following the Guru’s teachings he is led astray and the love of worldly things destroys all his senses.
ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆਂ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਹੀ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਡੋਬ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਤਰਹੁ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
man ray sabad tarahu chit laa-ay.
O’ my mind, follow the Guru’s teachings with full concentration and swim across the world-ocean of vices.
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜ (ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ।
ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝਿਆ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jin gurmukh naam na boojhi-aa mar janmai aavai jaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The person who does not grasp the Guru’s Gift of Naam, he continues to suffer in cycles of birth and death.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਈ, ਉਹ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਤਨੁ ਸੂਚਾ ਸੋ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
tan soochaa so aakhee-ai jis meh saachaa naa-o.
That body is said to be pure, in which dwells the eternal Name of God.
ਜਿਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਸਰੀਰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਅਖਵਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭੈ ਸਚਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਆਉ ॥
bhai sach raatee dayhuree jihvaa sach su-aa-o.
One whose body is imbued with loving fear of God and whose purpose in life is to sing praises of God,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਸਰੀਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਅਦਬ-ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਦਾ) ਅਸਲ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਚੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੀਐ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਤਾਉ ॥੨॥
sachee nadar nihaalee-ai bahurh na paavai taa-o. ||2||
is blessed by God’s gracious glance. That person does not have to go through the suffering in the cycles of birth and death.
ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ (ਚੌਰਾਸੀ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਦੀ ਕੁਠਾਲੀ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਤਾਅ (ਸੇਕ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸਹਾਰਦਾ l
ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਪਵਨਾ ਭਇਆ ਪਵਨੈ ਤੇ ਜਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
saachay tay pavnaa bha-i-aa pavnai tay jal ho-ay.
From the ever existing God came the air, and from the air came water.
ਸੱਚੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤੋਂ ਹਵਾ ਹੋਈ ਅਤੇ ਹਵਾ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਣੀ ਬਣਿਆ।
ਜਲ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣੁ ਸਾਜਿਆ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮੋਇ ॥
jal tay taribhavan saaji-aa ghat ghat jot samo-ay.
From water, He created the three worlds (earth, sky and nether region); and His light pervades in each and every heart.
ਪਾਣੀ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਜਹਾਨ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਹਰ ਦਿਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਨਾ ਥੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੩॥
nirmal mailaa naa thee-ai sabad ratay pat ho-ay. ||3||
Person imbued with Guru’s word gets honor, he always remains immaculate and never become soiled with vices.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਨੂੰ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਆਦਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੀ
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਸੰਤੋਖਿਆ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
ih man saach santokhi-aa nadar karay tis maahi.
When his mind becomes contented by meditating on God’s Name with loving devotion, then His grace falls upon him.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਦਾ ਧਾਰਨੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
