ਕਵਨ ਗੁਨੁ ਜੋ ਤੁਝੁ ਲੈ ਗਾਵਉ ॥

What is that virtue, by which I may sing of You?
ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਗੁਣ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਾਂ i
ਕਵਨ ਬੋਲ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਰੀਝਾਵਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kavan bol paarbrahm reejh ava-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ God, what is that word by which I may please You?
ਹੇ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਕੇਹੜੇ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਕਰਾਂ
ਕਵਨ ਸੁ ਪੂਜਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਕਰਉ ॥
kavan so poojaa tayree kara-o.
What kind of worship service shall I perform for You?
ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੇਹੜੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਾਂ?
ਕਵਨ ਸੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਭਵਜਲ ਤਰਉ ॥੨॥
kavan so biDh jit bhavjal tara-o. ||2||
What is that way by which, I may cross over the dreadful world-ocean of vices?
ਉਹ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੈਂ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਵਾਂ?
ਕਵਨ ਤਪੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਤਪੀਆ ਹੋਇ ॥
kavan tap jit tapee-aa ho-ay.
What is that penance, by which I may become a penitent?
ਉਹ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਤਪੱਸਿਆਂ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੈਂ ਤਪੱਸਵੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਵਾਂ?
ਕਵਨੁ ਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਲੁ ਖੋਇ ॥੩॥
kavan so naam ha-umai mal kho-ay. ||3||
What is that Naam, by which the filth of egotism may be washed away?
ਉਹ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਧੋਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ?
ਗੁਣ ਪੂਜਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਗਲ ਘਾਲ ॥
gun poojaa gi-aan Dhi-aan naanak sagal ghaal.
O’ Nanak, all the efforts of a person, such as worship, singing praises of God, acquiring divine knowledge and virtues succeed only,
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਗਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਗੁਣ, ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਪੂਜਾ, ਗਿਆਨ ਤੇ ਜੋੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੁਰਤ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਸਫਲ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਦਇਆਲ ॥੪॥
jis kar kirpaa satgur milai da-i-aal. ||4||
When the merciful (God) shows His kindness, and one meets the true Guru.
ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਦਿਆਲ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਗੁਨੁ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
tis hee gun tin hee parabh jaataa.
Only that person acquires such merit, and only that person has realized God,
ਕੇਵਲ ਓਹੀ ਉਤਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਤਾ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹੀ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਮਾਨਿ ਲੇਇ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੩੬॥੧੦੫॥
jis kee maan lay-ay sukh-daata. ||1|| rahaa-o doojaa. ||36||105||
Whose prayer is accepted by the peace giver God.
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮੰਨ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ

Raag Gauree, by Fifth Guru:
ਆਪਨ ਤਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਗਰਬਾ ॥
aapan tan nahee jaa ko garbaa.
The body which you are so proud of, does not belong to you forever.
ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਤੂੰ ਮਾਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਰਾਜ ਮਿਲਖ ਨਹੀ ਆਪਨ ਦਰਬਾ ॥੧॥
raaj milakh nahee aapan darbaa. ||1||
Power, property and wealth are not yours forever. ||1||
ਰਾਜ, ਭੁਇਂ, ਧਨ ਇਹ ਭੀ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ l
ਆਪਨ ਨਹੀ ਕਾ ਕਉ ਲਪਟਾਇਓ ॥
aapan nahee kaa ka-o laptaa-i-o.
They are not yours, so why do you cling to them?
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਤੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਮੋਹ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ?
ਆਪਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aapan naam satgur tay paa-i-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Only the Naam, the Name of God, is yours; it is received from the True Guru.
ਕੇਵਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ!
ਸੁਤ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਆਪਨ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਈ ॥
sut banitaa aapan nahee bhaa-ee.
Children, spouse and siblings are not yours.
ਪ੍ਰਤੂ ਪਤਨੀ ਅਤੇ ਭਰਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਇਸਟ ਮੀਤ ਆਪ ਬਾਪੁ ਨ ਮਾਈ ॥੨॥
isat meet aap baap na maa-ee. ||2||
Dear friends, mother and father are not yours. ||2||
ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦੋਸਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਹੀਂ!
ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੂਪਾ ਫੁਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਦਾਮ ॥
su-inaa roopaa fun nahee daam.
Gold, silver and money are not yours.
ਸੋਨਾ ਚਾਂਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਰੁਪਏ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਆਪਨ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਮ ॥੩॥
haivar gaivar aapan nahee kaam. ||3||
Fine horses and magnificent elephants are of no use to you for ever.
ਉਮਦਾ ਘੋੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਹਾਥੀ ਭੀ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦੇ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਿ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
kaho naanak jo gur bakhas milaa-i-aa.
Nanak says, , whom Guru has united with God, through his grace,
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ) ਮਿਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੩੭॥੧੦੬॥
tis kaa sabh kichh jis kaa har raa-i-aa. ||4||37||106||
everything belongs to him, whose patron is God Himself.
ਹਰ ਵਸਤ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਲਕੀਅਤ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਹੈ।

ga-orhee mehlaa 5.
Raag Gauree, by the Fifth Guru:
ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਊਪਰਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਥੇ ॥
gur kay charan oopar mayray maathay.
The Guru’s feet (his teachings) are enshrined in my mind,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਟਿਕੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ,
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਗਲੇ ਲਾਥੇ ॥੧॥
taa tay dukh mayray saglay laathay. ||1||
and by following those teachings all my miseries have vanished.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਕਉ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ॥
satgur apunay ka-o kurbaanee.
I dedicate myself to my True Guru,
ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
ਆਤਮ ਚੀਨਿ ਪਰਮ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aatam cheen param rang maanee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
by Whose Grace, I have obtained self awareness and now I am enjoying the supreme bliss.
(ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ l
ਚਰਣ ਰੇਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
charan rayn gur kee mukh laagee.
I have listened to and followed the teachings of the Guru with humility,
ਮੇਰੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਲੱਗ ਗਈ,
ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਤਿਨਿ ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗੀ ॥੨॥
ahaN-buDh tin sagal ti-aagee. ||2||
which has removed all my arrogant intellect.
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਮਤ ਸਮੂਹ ਨਵਿਰਤ ਕਰ ਦਿਤੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਲਗੋ ਮਨਿ ਮੀਠਾ ॥
gur kaa sabad lago man meethaa.
The Word of the Guru seems pleasing to my mind,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ,
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਮੋਹਿ ਡੀਠਾ ॥੩॥
paarbarahm taa tay mohi deethaa. ||3||
and through the Guru’s word I behold the Supreme God.
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ
ਗੁਰੁ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
gur sukh-daata gur kartaar.
The Guru is the Giver of peace; the Guru is the Creator.
ਗੁਰੂ (ਹੀ ਸਾਰੇ) ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਕਰਤਾਰ (ਦਾ ਰੂਪ) ਹੈ।
ਜੀਅ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੁ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੩੮॥੧੦੭॥
jee-a paraan naanak gur aaDhaar. ||4||38||107||
O Nanak, the Guru is the Support of the breath of life and the soul.
ਗੁਰੂ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਹੈ l

ray man mayray tooN taa ka-o aahi. jaa kai oonaa kachhhoo naahi. ||1||
O my mind, seek the One who lacks nothing. ||1||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਕਰ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਸੇ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਘਾਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ l
ਹਰਿ ਸਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਨ ਮੀਤ ॥
har saa pareetam kar man meet.
O’ my mind, make God as your friend.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਰਗਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਬਣਾ,
ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰੁ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਸਦ ਚੀਤ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
paraan aDhaar raakho sad cheet. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Keep Him constantly in your mind; He is the Support of the breath of life.
ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਾਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ (ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ) ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੋ ਰੱਖ l
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੂੰ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਸੇਵਿ ॥
ray man mayray tooN taa ka-o sayv.
O my mind, serve Him (remember Him with love and devotion),
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰ,
ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਅਪਰੰਪਰ ਦੇਵ ॥੨॥
aad purakh aprampar dayv. ||2||
who is the all-pervading Primal Being and is beyond any limit.
ਜੋ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼-ਰੂਪ ਹੈ
ਤਿਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਮਨ ਕਰਿ ਤੂੰ ਆਸਾ ॥
tis oopar man kar tooN aasaa.
O’ my mind, pin your hopes only on the One,
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਤੇ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਲੋੜਾਂ ਪੂਰੀਆਂ ਹੋਣ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਰੱਖ,
ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਭਰਵਾਸਾ ॥੩॥
aad jugaad jaa kaa bharvaasaa. ||3||
who is the Support of all beings, from the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages.
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਦਾ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਸਦਾ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੈ l
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
jaa kee pareet sadaa sukh ho-ay.
His Love brings eternal peace;
ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥੩੯॥੧੦੮॥
naanak gaavai gur mil so-ay. ||4||39||108||
meeting the Guru, Nanak sings His Glorious Praises.
ਨਾਨਕ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l

ਮੀਤੁ ਕਰੈ ਸੋਈ ਹਮ ਮਾਨਾ ॥
meet karai so-ee ham maanaa.
Whatever my Friend (God) does, I cheerfully accept that.
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ (ਸਿਰ-ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ) ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
ਮੀਤ ਕੇ ਕਰਤਬ ਕੁਸਲ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
meet kay kartab kusal samaanaa. ||1||
My Friend’s actions are pleasing to me.
ਮਿੱਤਰ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕੰਮ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਵਰਗੇ (ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ) ਹਨ l
ਏਕਾ ਟੇਕ ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਚੀਤ ॥
aykaa tayk mayrai man cheet.
Within my conscious mind is only one assurance,
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ-ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਹ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਸੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਸੁ ਹਮਰਾ ਮੀਤ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jis kichh karnaa so hamraa meet. ||1|| rahaa-o.
that He, who has to do anything is my friend.
ਕਿ ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ।
ਮੀਤੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ॥
meet hamaaraa vayparvaahaa.
My Friend-God is Carefree. (He is not dependent upon anyone for anything).
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਬੇ-ਮੁਥਾਜ ਹੈ
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਮੋਹਿ ਅਸਨਾਹਾ ॥੨॥
gur kirpaa tay mohi asnaahaa. ||2||
By Guru’s Grace, I give my love to Him. (I came close to Him).
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ (ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਬਣੀ ਹੈ) l
ਮੀਤੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
meet hamaaraa antarjaamee.
My Friend (God) is the inner knower of all minds.
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ) ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਮਰਥ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥੩॥
samrath purakh paarbarahm su-aamee. ||3||
He is the All-powerful, all pervading Supreme God and Master.
