vadbhaagee mil sangtee mayray govindaa jan naanak naam siDh kaajai jee-o. ||4||4||30||68||
O’ Nanak, by good fortune; join the holy congregation and meditate on God’s Name, it is through Naam that the life’s goal is achieved. (4-4-30-68)
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਹਰਿ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ, ਤੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ। ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਮਨੋਰਥ ਦੀ ਸਫਲਤਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ l

Raag Gauree Maajh, Fourth Guru:
ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਰਹੁ ਲਗਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥
mai har naamai har birahu lagaa-ee jee-o.
God has implanted a longing for God’s Name within me.
ਹਰੀ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਕ ਲਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ,
ਮੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮਿਤੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥
mayraa har parabh mit milai sukh paa-ee jee-o.
Now, I feel at peace only when I realize my friend, God.
ਮੈਂ (ਹੁਣ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ) ਆਨੰਦ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਹਰਿ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਹੀ ਪਏ।
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਜੀਵਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥
har parabh daykh jeevaa mayree maa-ee jee-o.
O’ my mother, I spiritually survive only by realizing my God.
ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! ਹਰਿ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
mayraa naam sakhaa har bhaa-ee jee-o. ||1||
God’s Name is my only Friend and Brother.
ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ) ਮੇਰਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਵੀਰ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਜੀਉ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇਰੇ ਜੀਉ ॥
gun gaavhu sant jee-o mayray har parabh kayray jee-o.
O, respectable Saints, sing Praises of my God.
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਤੁਸੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੋ l
ਜਪਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜੀਉ ਭਾਗ ਵਡੇਰੇ ਜੀਉ ॥
jap gurmukh naam jee-o bhaag vadayray jee-o.
By lovingly meditating on Naam through the Guru, one becomes very fortunate.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆਂ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗ ਜਾਗ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜੀਉ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਜੀਉ ॥
har har naam jee-o paraan har mayray jee-o.
God’s Name has now become my life support.
ਹਰਿ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੁਣ) ਮੇਰੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ।
ਫਿਰਿ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਭਵਜਲ ਫੇਰੇ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥
fir bahurh na bhavjal fayray jee-o. ||2||
With such support, there will not be any more rounds of birth and death for me.
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ (ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ) ਗੇੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਵੇਗਾ।
ਕਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਵੇਖਾ ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਚਾਉ ਜੀਉ ॥
ki-o har parabh vaykhaa mayrai man tan chaa-o jee-o.
My mind and body yearn for Him. How could I behold my God?
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਚਾਉ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਹਰਿ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਸਕਾਂ।
ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਜੀਉ ਮਨਿ ਲਗਾ ਭਾਉ ਜੀਉ ॥
har maylhu sant jee-o man lagaa bhaa-o jee-o.
O dear Saints, please unite me with God, my mind is craving Him.
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਹਰਿ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਦੀ) ਤਾਂਘ ਲੱਗ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਹਰਿ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਾ ਦਿਉ।
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਰਾਉ ਜੀਉ ॥
gur sabdee paa-ee-ai har pareetam raa-o jee-o.
It is through the Guru’s teachings that we can realize our beloved God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਹਰਿ-ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਉ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥
vadbhaagee jap naa-o jee-o. ||3||
O very fortunate one, chant the Name of God. ||3||
ਹੇ ਭਾਰੇ ਭਾਗਾ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਤੂੰ ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਕਰ।
ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਵਡੜੀ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਸਾ ਜੀਉ ॥
mayrai man tan vadrhee govind parabh aasaa jee-o.
Within my mind, there is such a great longing for God.
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ) ਦੀ ਬੜੀ ਆਸ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਜੀਉ ਗੋਵਿਦ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਾਸਾ ਜੀਉ ॥
har maylhu sant jee-o govid parabh paasaa jee-o.
O dear saints, please make me realize God who dwells within me.
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਓਹ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਾ ਦਿਉ ਜੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ਜੀਉ ॥
satgur mat naam sadaa pargaasaa jee-o.
By following the Guru’s teachings, the mortal’s mind always remain illuminated with Naam.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ (ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਹਰਿ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਪਰਕਾਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਿਅੜੀ ਮਨਿ ਆਸਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੫॥੩੧॥੬੯॥
jan naanak poori-arhee man aasaa jee-o. ||4||5||31||69||
O’ Nanak, one who follows the Guru’s teachings, his desire for union with God gets fulfilled. ||4||5||31||69||
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੀ) ਆਸ ਪੂਰੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ
ਗਉੜੀ ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
ga-orhee maajh mehlaa 4.
Raag Gauree Maajh, Fourth Guru:
ਮੇਰਾ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਜੀਵਾ ਜੀਉ ॥
mayraa birhee naam milai taa jeevaa jee-o.
I spiritually survive only if I am blessed with God’s Name from which I have been separated.
ਮੈਂ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਮੈਥੋਂ) ਵਿੱਛੁੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ (ਮਿੱਤਰ) ਮਿਲ ਪਏ।
ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਲੀਵਾ ਜੀਉ ॥
man andar amrit gurmat har leevaa jee-o.
The Ambrosial nectar of Naam is within my heart, but only through Guru’s teachings I can get it.
ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਉਹ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਲੈ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੜਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਸਦਾ ਪੀਵਾ ਜੀਉ ॥
man har rang rat-rhaa har ras sadaa peevaa jee-o.
My mind is imbued with God’s Love, and I always partake the elixir of Naam.
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਅੜਾ ਮਨਿ ਜੀਵਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
har paa-i-arhaa man jeevaa jee-o. ||1||
I have realized God within my mind, and therefore I am spiritually alive.
ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਮੈਂ ਪਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਮੈਂ ਜੀਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਲਗਾ ਹਰਿ ਬਾਣੁ ਜੀਉ ॥
mayrai man tan paraym lagaa har baan jee-o.
The arrow of God’s Love has pierced my mind and body.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਤੀਰ ਵਿੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਮਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ਜੀਉ ॥
mayraa pareetam mitar har purakh sujaan jee-o.
My Beloved, my Best Friend, God is very wise
ਸੁਜਾਨ ਹਰੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਹੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਹੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਸੰਤ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਘੜੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ਜੀਉ ॥
gur maylay sant har sugharh sujaan jee-o.
It is only the Guru who unites one with the sagacious God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਸੰਤ ਸੁਜਾਨ ਸੁਘੜ ਹਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਉ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥
ha-o naam vitahu kurbaan jee-o. ||2||
I dedicate myself to God’s Name.
ਮੈਂ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥
ਹਉ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਜਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਮੀਤੁ ਦਸਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥
ha-o har har sajan har meet dasaa-ee jee-o.
O’ dear saints, from you I inquire the whereabouts of my friend, God.
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਮੈਂ (ਤੁਹਾਥੋਂ) ਹਰਿ-ਸੱਜਣ ਹਰਿ-ਮਿੱਤਰ (ਦਾ ਪਤਾ) ਪੁੱਛਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਹਰਿ ਦਸਹੁ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਜੀ ਹਰਿ ਖੋਜੁ ਪਵਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥
har dashu santahu jee har khoj pavaa-ee jee-o.
Yes, tell me about the way to God, I am searching all over for Him.
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਤਾ ਦੱਸੋ, ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਹਰੀ-ਸੱਜਣ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤੁਠੜਾ ਦਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥
satgur tuth-rhaa dasay har paa-ee jee-o.
I can realize God only when the true Guru becomes kind and guides me to Him,
ਮੈਂ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਹਰਿ-ਮਿੱਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਤਾ) ਦੱਸੇ,
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥
har naamay naam samaa-ee jee-o. ||3||
and only then, I can merge in Naam by meditating on God’s Name.
ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ l
ਮੈ ਵੇਦਨ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਰਹੁ ਲਗਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥
mai vaydan paraym har birahu lagaa-ee jee-o.
I am consumed with the pain of separation from God’s love and longing for union with God is welling up.
ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਦੀ ਪੀੜ ਉੱਠ ਰਹੀ ਹੈl ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਣ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਕ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਸਰਧਾ ਪੂਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥
gur sarDhaa poor amrit mukh paa-ee jee-o.
O’ Guru, please fulfill this desire of mine so that I may partake the elixir of Naam.
ਹੇ ਗੁਰੂ! ਮੇਰੀ ਸਰਧਾ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਰ (ਤਾ ਕਿ) ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਵਾਂ।
ਹਰਿ ਹੋਹੁ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ਜੀਉ ॥
har hohu da-i-aal har naam Dhi-aa-ee jee-o.
O’ God, please show mercy, so that I may lovingly meditate on Your Name,
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਦਿਆਲ ਹੋ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਧਿਆਵਾਂ,
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੬॥੨੦॥੧੮॥੩੨॥੭੦॥
jan naanak har ras paa-ee jee-o. ||4||6||20||18||32||70||
and O’ Nanak, I may receive the elixir of Your Name.||4||6||20||18||32||70||

ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਿਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੁਸਲੁ ਹੋਤ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
kin biDh kusal hot mayray bhaa-ee.
O’ my brother, how can one experience the spiritual ?
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਰਾਵਾ, ਕਿਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਰੂਹਾਨੀ ਅਨੰਦ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਕਿਉ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਸਹਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ki-o paa-ee-ai har raam sahaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
How can God, our Help and Support, be realized? ||1||Pause||
ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਦਦਗਾਰ, ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਕੁਸਲੁ ਨ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਸਭ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
kusal na garihi mayree sabh maa-i-aa.
There is no spiritual peace in just owning a home, thinking that all this wealth is mine,
ਘਰ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੀ ਦੌਲਤ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਨਿੱਜ ਦੀ ਆਖਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੋਈ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਹੀਂ ,
ਊਚੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਛਾਇਆ ॥
oochay mandar sundar chhaa-i-aa.
and enjoying the lofty mansions surrounded by trees casting beautiful shades.
ਉੱਚੇ ਮਹਲ-ਮਾੜੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਾਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ ਮਾਣਨ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਝੂਠੇ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
jhoothay laalach janam gavaa-i-aa. ||1||
The one, who thought these worldly possessions as the source of bliss has wasted this human birth in false greed. ||1||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਝੂਠੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਗਵਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ l
