ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar sat naam kartaa purakh nirbha-o nirvair akaal moorat ajoonee saibhaN gur prasad.
One God. Eternal. Creative Being, All pervading .He has no Fear or Hatred. He is beyond time. Self-Existent. Realized by the Guru’s Grace:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ‘ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ’ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਭੈ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਵੈਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਉ ਮੁਚੁ ਭਾਰਾ ਵਡਾ ਤੋਲੁ ॥
bha-o much bhaaraa vadaa tol.
The revered fear of God has the most substance and validity.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਬਹੁਤ ਭਾਰਾ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਤੋਲ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ l (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਗੌਰਾ ਤੇ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ)
ਮਨ ਮਤਿ ਹਉਲੀ ਬੋਲੇ ਬੋਲੁ ॥
man mat ha-ulee bolay bol.
The intellect guided by one’s own mind is very shallow, and so are the words uttered under its influence.
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਹੋਛੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹੋਛਾ ਹੀ ਬਚਨ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਿਰਿ ਧਰਿ ਚਲੀਐ ਸਹੀਐ ਭਾਰੁ ॥
sir Dhar chalee-ai sahi hai bhaar.
If we walk through the path of life, bearing God’s revered fear in our mind.
ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਕਬੂਲ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰੀਏ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਡਰ ਦਾ ਭਾਰ ਸਹਾਰ ਸਕੀਏ, (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਸੁਖਾਵਾਂ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ)
ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮੀ ਗੁਰ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
nadree karmee gur beechaar. ||1||
Then, by God’s grace the Guru’s teachings become part of our life.
ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖਤਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਵਿਚਾਰ(ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਲੰਘਸਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥
bhai bin ko-ay na langhas paar.
Without the fear of God, no one can cross over the world-ocean of vices.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੰਘ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਭੈ ਭਉ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਭਾਇ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bhai bha-o raakhi-aa bhaa-ay savaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Only the one, who has embellished one’s life by keeping the revered fear of God in the mind, crosses it.
ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਹੀ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੰਵਾਰ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ l
ਭੈ ਤਨਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਭਖੈ ਭੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
bhai tan agan bhakhai bhai naal.
With the revered fear of God in mind one always yearns to unite with Him.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਭੈ ਭਉ ਘੜੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥
bhai bha-o gharhee-ai sabad savaar.
By molding and embellishing our spiritual life through the Guru’s word, we start living our life in the revered fear of God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ) ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਬਣਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਘਾੜਤ ਕਚੁ ਨਿਕਚ ॥
bhai bin ghaarhat kach nikach.
The human character which is fashioned without the revered fear of God, is absolutely false,
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਰੱਖਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਡੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਘਾੜਤ ਹੋਛੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਹੋਛੀ ਬਣਦੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਧਾ ਸਚਾ ਅੰਧੀ ਸਟ ॥੨॥
anDhaa sachaa anDhee sat. ||2||
like a vessel, which has been fashioned in a mold of ignorance with the strokes of ignorance.
ਜਿਸ ਸੱਚੇ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵਨ ਢਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਹੋਛਾ-ਪਨ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਾਡੇ ਜਤਨ ਭੀ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ
ਬੁਧੀ ਬਾਜੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਚਾਉ ॥
buDhee baajee upjai chaa-o.
The desire for the worldly drama arises in the mortal’s intellect.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਜਗਤ-ਖੇਡ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਜਗਤ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਹੀ) ਚਾਉ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਹਸ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਪਵੈ ਨ ਤਾਉ ॥
sahas si-aanap pavai na taa-o.
In spite of thousands of clever ideas, his life is not molded by the fear of God.
ਉਹ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਸਿਆਣਪਾਂ ਭੀ ਕਰੇ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਠੀਕ ਸੱਚੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਢਲਦਾ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਵਾਉ ॥
nanak manmukh bolan vaa-o.
O Nanak, the word of the self-willed person is as light (shallow) as wind.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦਾ ਬੇ-ਥਵਾ ਬੋਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਧਾ ਅਖਰੁ ਵਾਉ ਦੁਆਉ ॥੩॥੧॥
anDhaa akhar vaa-o du-aa-o. ||3||1||
That ignorant person’s words are worthless and empty, like the wind.
ਉਹ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਊਲ-ਜਲੂਲ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Raag Gauree, First Guru:
ਡਰਿ ਘਰੁ ਘਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਡਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
dar ghar ghar dar dar dar jaa-ay.
When one has the fear of God in the heart, then any other kind of fear is dispelled.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੇਰੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦਾ ਸਹਮ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੋ ਡਰੁ ਕੇਹਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਡਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਪਾਇ ॥
so dar kayhaa jit dar dar paa-ay.
What is the use of having the kind of fear, which makes one increasingly afraid of other fears in life?
ਤੇਰਾ ਡਰ ਐਸਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਡਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਸਹਮ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੇ।
ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
tuDh bin doojee naahee jaa-ay.
Without You, one has no other place or support.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਥਾਂ-ਆਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
jo kichh vartai sabh tayree rajaa-ay. ||1||
Whatever happens is all according to Your Will. ||1||
ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਰਜ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ l
ਡਰੀਐ ਜੇ ਡਰੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਹੋਰੁ ॥
daree-ai jay dar hovai hor.
One should be afraid of any other kind of fear, if there were truly any other fear except the fear of God.
ਜੇ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਡਰ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਸਹਮਿਆ ਰਹੇ ।
ਡਰਿ ਡਰਿ ਡਰਣਾ ਮਨ ਕਾ ਸੋਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
dar dar darnaa man kaa sor. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Always living in one fear or the other is nothing but the mind’s own commotion
ਸਦਾ ਡਰਦੇ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਨਿਰਾਪੁਰਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਦਾ ਸ਼ੋਰ ਸ਼ਰਾਬਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾ ਜੀਉ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਡੂਬੈ ਤਰੈ ॥
naa jee-o marai na doobai tarai.
The soul does not die; it neither drown nor swims across the world ocean of vices.
ਨਾਂ ਆਤਮਾ ਮਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਨਾਂ ਡੁਬਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਨਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੈ ॥
jin kichh kee-aa so kichh karai.
The One who has created this universe does everything.
ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਾਇ ॥
hukmay aavai hukmay jaa-ay.
By His Command one is born, and by His Command one dies.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
aagai paachhai hukam samaa-ay. ||2||
Here and hereafter, His Command is pervading.
ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਹੰਸੁ ਹੇਤੁ ਆਸਾ ਅਸਮਾਨੁ ॥
hans hayt aasaa asmaan.
The mind which has tendencies for violence, attachment, desires and egotism.
ਜਿਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਰਦਇਤਾ, ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮੋਹ, ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਭੂਖ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਨੈ ਸਾਨੁ ॥
tis vich bhookh bahut nai saan.
Also in that mind is the hunger for Maya, like the raging torrent of a wild stream.
ਉਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਕਾਂਗ ਨਦੀ ਵਾਂਗ (ਠਾਠਾਂ ਮਾਰ ਰਹੀ) ਹੈ।
ਭਉ ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥
bha-o khaanaa peenaa aaDhaar.
Let the revered fear of God be the spiritual food, drink and support.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ;
ਵਿਣੁ ਖਾਧੇ ਮਰਿ ਹੋਹਿ ਗਵਾਰ ॥੩॥
vin khaaDhay mar hohi gavaar. ||3||
Without consuming this spiritual food (living in the revered fear of God), these fools perish away.
ਜੋ ਇਹ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਉਹ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ) ਸਹਮ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਕਮਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਕੋਇ ਕੋਈ ਕੋਇ ਕੋਇ ॥
jis kaa ko-ay ko-ee ko-ay ko-ay.
The one who has someone else as one’s supporter, that someone rarely proves to be the true supporter in the end.
ਜਿਸ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਸਹਾਈ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਹੀ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਸਾਥੀ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ),
ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਸੋਇ ॥
sabh ko teraa tooN sabhnaa kaa so-ay.
All are Yours and You are the support of all.
ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰਾ (ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ) ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਦੀ ਸਾਰ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥
jaa kay jee-a jant Dhan maal.
God, to whom belongs all beings and creatures, wealth and property
ਜਿਸ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ-ਜੰਤ, ਸਭ ਦੌਲਤ ਅਤੇ ਜਾਇਦਾਦ ਹਨ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਣੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੨॥
naanak aakhan bikham beechaar. ||4||2||
O Nanak, it is so difficult to describe and contemplate Him.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਔਖਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਵਰਨਣ ਅਤੇ ਵਿੱਚਾਰ ਕਰਨਾ।
ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Raag Gauree, First Guru:
ਮਾਤਾ ਮਤਿ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ॥
maataa mat pitaa santokh.
O’ God, for me good intellect is like my mother, and contentment like my father,
ਮੈਂ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਅਮੜੀ, ਸਤੁੰਸ਼ਟਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਬਾਬਲ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਸਤੁ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਿ ਏਹੁ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥੧॥
sat bhaa-ee kar ayhu visaykh. ||1||
I have made truth as my brother, and this is my special family.
ਸਚਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਭਰਾ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਹਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਸਨਬੰਧੀ।
ਕਹਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
kahnaa hai kichh kahan na jaa-ay.
O’ God, much needs to be said about Your creation, but it cannot be fully described,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੀ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ, ਰਤਾ-ਮਾਤ੍ਰ ਦੱਸੀ ਹੈ,
ਤਉ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ta-o kudrat keemat nahee paa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
because the worth of Your creation cannot be estimated.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਦਾ ਪੂਰਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ l
