ਆਇਆ ਗਇਆ ਮੁਇਆ ਨਾਉ ॥
aa-i-aa ga-i-aa mu-i-aa naa-o.
He came and departed from this world, even his name has been forgotten.
ਉਹ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਇਆ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਗਿਆ, (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਭੀ ਭੁੱਲ ਗਿਆ,
ਪਿਛੈ ਪਤਲਿ ਸਦਿਹੁ ਕਾਵ ॥
pichhai patal sadihu kaav.
After the death, food is served to Brahmins on leaf plates, and the birds are also fed in his memory (but none of the charity reaches the departed soul).
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਗਰੋਂ ਪੱਤਿਆਂ ਉਤੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਂ ਬੁਲਾਏ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਅੱਪੜਦਾ)।
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਧੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

O, Nanak, the self-willed person’s love for Maya is out of ignorance.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ (ਜਗਤ ਨਾਲ) ਪਿਆਰ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ,
ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਡੁਬਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
baajh guroo dubaa sansaar. ||2||
Without the Guru’s teachings, people (world) are drowning in the darkness of ignorance.
ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਸਰਣ ਆਉਣ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਗਤ (ਇਸ ‘ਅੰਧ ਪਿਆਰ’ ਵਿਚ) ਡੁੱਬ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ l

Shalok by, the First Guru:
ਦਸ ਬਾਲਤਣਿ ਬੀਸ ਰਵਣਿ ਤੀਸਾ ਕਾ ਸੁੰਦਰੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
das baaltan bees ravan teesaa kaa sundar kahaavai.
At the age of ten, he is a child; at twenty, a youth, and at thirty, he is called handsome.
ਦਸਾਂ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਦਮੀ ਬੱਚਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਵੀਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੁਆਨ ਅਤੇ ਤੀਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੁਹਣਾ ਆਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਚਾਲੀਸੀ ਪੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਪਚਾਸੀ ਪਗੁ ਖਿਸੈ ਸਠੀ ਕੇ ਬੋਢੇਪਾ ਆਵੈ ॥
chaaleesee pur ho-ay pachaasee pag khisai sathee kay bodhaypaa aavai.
At forty, he is full of life; at fifty, his foot slips (he is going downhill), and at sixty, old age is upon him.
ਚਾਲੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੈ। ਪੰਜਾਹ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪੈਰ ਪਿਛੇ ਮੁੜ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਠਾ ਤੇ ਬਿਰਧ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਰਿ ਕਾ ਮਤਿਹੀਣੁ ਅਸੀਹਾਂ ਕਾ ਵਿਉਹਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
satar kaa matiheen aseehaaN kaa vi-uhaar na paavai.
At seventy, he loses his intellect, and at eighty, he cannot perform his duties.
ਸੱਤਰ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੀਵ ਅਕਲੋਂ ਹੀਣਾ ਹੋਣ ਲੱਗ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਅੱਸੀ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਾਰ ਜੋਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ।
ਨਵੈ ਕਾ ਸਿਹਜਾਸਣੀ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਪ ਬਲੁ ॥
navai kaa sihjaasnee mool na jaanai ap bal.
At ninety, he is confined to the bed, and he cannot understand his weakness.
ਨੱਵੇ ਸਾਲ ਦਾ ਮੰਜੇ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਿੱਲ ਸਕਦਾ, ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਭੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਢੰਢੋਲਿਮੁ ਢੂਢਿਮੁ ਡਿਠੁ ਮੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਗੁ ਧੂਏ ਕਾ ਧਵਲਹਰੁ ॥੩॥
dhandholim dhoodhim dith mai naanak jag Dhoo-ay kaa Dhavalhar. ||3||
O’ Nanak, after seeking and searching, I have concluded that the world is a very short lived illusory pleasure, just like a white mansion of smoke.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਖੋਜ ਭਾਲ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਚਿੱਟਾ ਪਲਸਤਰੀ ਧੂਏਂ ਦਾ ਮੰਦਰ ਹੈ l

ਤੂੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਹੈ ਆਪਿ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਤੀ ॥
tooN kartaa purakh agamm hai aap sarisat upaatee.
O’ God, You are Unfathomable Creator. You Yourself have created the Universe,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇਰੇ ਤੀਕ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪ (ਸਾਰੀ) ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਉਪਾਈ ਹੈ।
ਰੰਗ ਪਰੰਗ ਉਪਾਰਜਨਾ ਬਹੁ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਭਾਤੀ ॥
rang parang upaarjanaa baho baho biDh bhaatee.
in so many ways and forms, with creatures of various colors and qualities.
(ਇਹ ਰਚਨਾ) ਤੂੰ ਕਈ ਰੰਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਈ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੈ।
ਤੂੰ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਉਪਾਈਐ ਸਭੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਤੁਮਾਤੀ ॥
tooN jaaneh jin upaa-ee-ai sabh khayl tumaatee.
You created it, and You alone understand it. It is all Your Play.
ਤੂੰ ਹੀ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈਂ। ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਖੇਡ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਇਕਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਉਠਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਤੀ ॥
ik aavahi ik jaahi uth bin naavai mar jaatee.
People are coming and going after participating in this world-play. All those without Naam leave from the world in agony.
ਜੀਵ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਤੁਰੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਜੋ ‘ਨਾਮ’ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਹਨ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਚਲੂਲਿਆ ਰੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੀ ॥
gurmukh rang chalooli-aa rang har rang raatee.
But the Guru’s followers, who are imbued with the deep love of God, leave this world peacefully.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਗੂੜ੍ਹੇ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।
ਸੋ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਸਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੋ ਹਰਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਿਧਾਤੀ ॥
so sayvhu sat niranjano har purakh biDhaatee.
Therefore, remember the eternal and immaculate God with loving devotion, the architect of destiny.
ਉਸ ਸੱਚੇ ਤੇ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਟਹਿਲ ਕਮਾ ਜੋ ਸਰਬ-ਸ਼ਕਤੀਵਾਨ ਤੇ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਦਾ ਲਿਖਾਰੀ ਹੈ।
ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ਹੈ ਵਡ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਵਡਾਤੀ ॥
tooN aapay aap sujaan hai vad purakh vadaatee
O’ God, You Yourself are All-knowing. You are the Greatest of the Great!
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ;
ਜੋ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਧਿਆਇਦੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਚਿਆ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਜਾਤੀ ॥੧॥
jo man chit tuDh Dhi-aa-iday mayray sachi-aa bal bal ha-o tin jaatee. ||1||
O’ my God, I dedicate myself forever, to those who meditate on You with their conscious mind.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੱਚੇ (ਸਾਹਿਬ!) ਜੋ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮਨ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ l

Shalok, by the First Guru:
ਜੀਉ ਪਾਇ ਤਨੁ ਸਾਜਿਆ ਰਖਿਆ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਇ ॥
jee-o paa-ay tan saaji-aa rakhi-aa banat banaa-ay.
He placed the soul in the body which He had fashioned. He protects the Creation which He has created.
ਦੇਹਿ ਨੂੰ ਰਚ ਕੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਅੰਦਰ ਜਿੰਦ ਜਾਨ ਪਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਚਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਅਖੀ ਦੇਖੈ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਬੋਲੈ ਕੰਨੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
akhee daykhai jihvaa bolai kannee surat samaa-ay.
With the eyes he sees, with the tongue he speaks and becomes aware with the ears
ਆਪਣਿਆਂ ਨੇਤ੍ਰਾ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਕੰਨਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਬਿਰਤੀ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੈਰੀ ਚਲੈ ਹਥੀ ਕਰਣਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਪੈਨੈ ਖਾਇ ॥
pairee chalai hathee karnaa ditaa painai khaa-ay.
walks with the feet and works with hands, and consumes, what God gives.
ਪੈਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੱਥਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਕੰਮ) ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਦਿੱਤਾ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਪਹਿਨਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਿ ਰਚਿਆ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
jin rach rachi-aa tiseh na jaanai anDhaa anDh kamaa-ay.
The ungrateful, does not even acknowledge the One who has created him. The spiritually ignorant fool keeps doing evil deeds.
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ, ਅੰਨ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਔਝੜੇ ਪਿਆ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਜਾ ਭਜੈ ਤਾ ਠੀਕਰੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਘਾੜਤ ਘੜੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
jaa bhajai taa theekar hovai ghaarhat gharhee na jaa-ay.
When the pitcher of the body breaks (when one dies) and shatters into pieces, it cannot be re-created again.
ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ-ਰੂਪ ਭਾਂਡਾ ਟੁੱਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਠੀਕਰਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮੁੜ ਇਹ ਬਣਤਰ ਬਣ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਹਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਵਿਣੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak gur bin naahi pat pat vin paar na paa-ay. ||1||
O’ Nanak, without the Guru’s teaching one remains deprived of God’s Grace, and without God’s grace, no one can swim across the worldly ocean of vices.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਸਰਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਇਸ ਔਝੜ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਪਾਰ

Shalok, by the Second Guru:
ਦੇਂਦੇ ਥਾਵਹੁ ਦਿਤਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਐਸਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
dayNday thaavhu ditaa changa manmukh aisaa jaanee-ai.
We should regard that person as self-willed who values the gift more than the gift giver.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨੂੰ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਸਮਝ ਲਵੋ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ, ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੁਰਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ॥
surat mat chaturaa-ee taa kee ki-aa kar aakh vakhaanee-ai.
What can anyone say about his intelligence, understanding and cleverness?
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ, ਅਕਲ ਤੇ ਸਿਆਣਪ (ਅਜੇਹੀ ਨੀਵੀਂ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਹਿ ਕੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਚਹੁ ਕੁੰਡੀ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
antar bahi kai karam kamaavai so chahu kundee jaanee-ai.
Whatever bad deeds one commits secretly, eventually become known everywhere.
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਲੋਂ) ਲੁਕ ਕੇ (ਮੰਦੇ) ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਉਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਨਸ਼ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੋ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਧਰਮ ਨਾਉ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਾਪਿ ਕਮਾਣੈ ਪਾਪੀ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
jo Dharam kamaavai tis Dharam naa-o hovai paap kamaanai paapee jaanee-ai.
One who lives righteously is known as righteous; one who commits sins is known as a sinner.
(ਕੁਦਰਤ ਦਾ ਨੇਮ ਹੀ ਐਸਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭਲਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸਦਾ ਨਾਮ ‘ਧਰਮੀ’ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੰਦਾ ਹੀ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਖੇਲ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਕਿਆ ਦੂਜਾ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ॥
tooN aapay khayl karahi sabh kartay ki-aa doojaa aakh vakhaanee-ai.
O’ Creator,You Yourself enact the entire play. Why should we speak of any other?
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਸਾਰੇ ਕੌਤਕ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ। ਤੈਥੋਂ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਦੱਸੀਏ?
ਜਿਚਰੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਤਿਚਰੁ ਜੋਤੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਤੂੰ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਵਿਣੁ ਜੋਤੀ ਕੋਈ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਿਹੁ ਦਿਖਾ ਸਿਆਣੀਐ ॥
jichar tayree jot tichar jotee vich tooN boleh vin jotee ko-ee kichh karihu dikhaa si-aanee-ai.
As long as Your Light and Power is within the body, You speak through that Light. Without Your Light, who can do anything? let me see, such clever person!
ਜਿਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਤੇਰੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ਉਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਉਸ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈਂ। ਜਦੋਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਨਿਕਲ ਜਾਏ, ਤਾਂ ਭਲਾ ਕੋਈ ਕੁਝ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਸਹੀ, ਅਸੀਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਖ ਕੇ ਵੇਖੀਏ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਇਕੋ ਸੁਘੜੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੀਐ ॥੨॥
naanak gurmukh nadree aa-i-aa har iko sugharh sujaanee-ai. ||2||
O’ Nanak, by Guru’s grace one realizes that there is only one wise and sagacious God, who resides in all.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਇਕੋ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਤੇ ਸੁਜਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ

ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
tuDh aapay jagat upaa-ay kai tuDh aapay DhanDhai laa-i-aa.
You Yourself created the world, and You Yourself put it to work.
ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੰਮੀ ਕਾਜੀਂ ਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੋਹ ਠਗਉਲੀ ਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪਹੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਖੁਆਇਆ ॥

Administering the potion of emotional attachment, You Yourself have led the world astray.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਠਗ ਬੂਟੀ ਖੁਆ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਆਪਣੀ ਯਾਦ ਤੋਂ) ਖੁੰਝਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਿਸਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਹੈ ਨਹ ਤਿਪਤੈ ਭੁਖਾ ਤਿਹਾਇਆ ॥
tisnaa andar agan hai nah tiptai bhukhaa tihaa-i-aa.
The fire of desire is so intense that the greedy human being is never satisfied.
ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਬਲ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਰੱਜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਅਤੇ ਭੁੱਖਾ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਸਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਹਸਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਆਇਆ ਜਾਇਆ ॥
sahsaa ih sansaar hai mar jammai aa-i-aa jaa-i-aa.
This world is an illusion, caught in this illusion, people keep suffering in the cycle of birth and death.
ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਹੈ ਹੀ ਤੌਖ਼ਲਾ, ਇਸ ਤੌਖ਼ਲੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਜੀਵ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੋਹੁ ਨ ਤੁਟਈ ਸਭਿ ਥਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥
bin satgur moh na tut-ee sabh thakay karam kamaa-i-aa.
Without the True Guru’s teachings, emotional attachment is not broken. All have grown weary of performing empty rituals.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਟੁੱਟਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਜੀਵ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹਾਰ ਚੁਕੇ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸੁਖਿ ਰਜਾ ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
gurmatee naam Dhi-aa-ee-ai sukh rajaa jaa tuDh bhaa-i-aa.
O’ God, when it pleases You, only then one can be at peace by meditating on Your Name by following the Guru’s teachings.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਦ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਅਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕੁਲੁ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਣੇਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
kul uDhaaray aapnaa Dhan janaydee maa-i-aa.
Blessed is the mother of such a person, who saves his entire family from the vices
ਧੰਨ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਜੰਮਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਂ, (ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਖ਼ਾਨਦਾਨ ਹੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
