ਭਉ ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
bha-o khaanaa peenaa sukh saar.
One who deems the revered fear of God as sustenance for his spiritual life, this is the essence of true peace for him;
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਖਾਣ ਪੀਣ (ਆਸਰਾ) ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਲਈ ਇਹ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਸੁਖ ਹੈ
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਪਾਰੁ ॥
har jan sangat paavai paar.
by joining the company of God’s devotees, he crosses over the world-ocean of vices.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂਪਾਰ ਉਤਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚੁ ਬੋਲੈ ਬੋਲਾਵੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
sach bolai bolaavai pi-aar.
He always remembers God because the love for God’s Name inspires him to remember God
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਲ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਹੈ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੭॥
gur kaa sabad karnee hai saar. ||7||
To walk on the Divine path of the Guru is the most sublime deed for him. ||7||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਕਰਤੱਬ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਕਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਪਤਿ ਪੂਜਾ ॥
har jas karam Dharam pat poojaa.
Singing God’s praises is the essence of all deeds of righteousness, honor, and devotional worship for him.
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਲਈ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਧਰਮ ਕਰਮ ਹੈ, ਇਹੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਹੀ ਦੇਵ-ਪੂਜਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਅਗਨੀ ਮਹਿ ਭੂੰਜਾ ॥
kaam kroDh agnee meh bhooNjaa.
Such a person burns down his evil impulses of lust and anger in the fire of spiritual wisdom.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀ) ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਸਾੜ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਤਉ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜਾ ॥
har ras chaakhi-aa ta-o man bheejaa.
When one tastes the elixir of God’s Name, his mind gets appeased with it:
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਕ ਵਾਰੀ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਚੱਖ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਉਸ ਰਸ ਵਿਚ) ਭਿੱਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੮॥੫॥
paranvat naanak avar na doojaa. ||8||5||
Nanak prays, then that person doesn’t like any other worldly pleasure at all. ||8||5||
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਫਿਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਰਸ ਚੰਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ॥੮॥੫॥

Raag Prabhati,First Guru:
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ॥
raam naam jap antar poojaa.
(O’ pandit), lovingly remember God’s Name, this alone is the true devotional worship of God within your inner self.
(ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ, (ਇਹੀ) ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮ ਦੇਵ ਦੀ) ਪੂਜਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧॥
gur sabad veechaar avar nahee doojaa. ||1||
By reflecting on the Guru’s word (you would understand that) except for God there is none other to be worshipped. ||1||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੋਚ-ਮੰਡਲ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖ (ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਆ ਜਾਇਗੀ ਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਪੂਜਨ ਯੋਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਏਕੋ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਭ ਠਾਈ ॥
ayko rav rahi-aa sabh thaa-ee.
(O’ pandit), the same one God is pervading everywhere.
(ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ!) ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਭ ਥਾਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ।
ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਕਿਸੁ ਪੂਜ ਚੜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
avar na deesai kis pooj charhaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I do not see any other; unto whom may I make worship offerings? ||1||Pause||
ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਤੇ) ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ। ਮੈਂ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਾਂ? ਮੈਂ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ (ਫੁੱਲ ਆਦਿਕ) ਭੇਟ ਕਰਾਂ? ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਆਗੈ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਤੁਝ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
man tan aagai jee-arhaa tujh paas.
O’ God, I surrender this mind, body and life to You.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਮੇਰਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਾ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਹਾਜ਼ਰ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਇਹ ਨਿੱਕੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਭੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਖਹੁ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥੨॥
ji-o bhaavai ti-o rakhahu ardaas. ||2||
I pray like this: O’ God, keep me as You please. ||2||
ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਇਉਂ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ; ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੈ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਵੇਂ ਰੱਖ, ॥੨॥
ਸਚੁ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਨ ਰਸਾਈ ॥
sach jihvaa har rasan rasaa-ee.
One who utters God’s Name with his tongue and saturates his tongue with the elixir of God’s Name,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੀਭ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਰਸਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੩॥
gurmat chhootas parabh sarnaa-ee. ||3||
is liberated from the worldly bonds by following the Guru’s teachings and stays in God’s refuge. ||3||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੁਕਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਮੇਰੈ ਕੀਏ ॥
karam Dharam parabh mayrai kee-ay.
My God has created religious rituals,
ਮੇਰੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡ ਬਣਾਏ ਹਨ,
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਕੀਏ ॥੪॥
naam vadaa-ee sir karmaaN kee-ay. ||4||
and God Himself has ranked the glory of Naam above all other deeds. ||4||
ਪਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਭ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ॥
satgur kai vas chaar padaarath.
The four great blessings (righteousness, worldly wealth, fulfilment of desires and emancipation) are under the true Guru’s control.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਇਖ਼ਤਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ (ਧਰਮ, ਅਰਥ, ਕਾਮ, ਮੋਖ) ਚਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਹਨ।
ਤੀਨਿ ਸਮਾਏ ਏਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਤਾਰਥ ॥੫॥
teen samaa-ay ayk kirtaarath. ||5||
When the desire for the first three ends by following the Guru’s teachings, and then one is blessed with the fourth object, the emancipation. ||5||
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ) ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ (ਪਹਿਲੇ) ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਾਸਨਾ ਹੀ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਵਿਚ ਸਫਲਤਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ) ॥੫॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਏ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਧਿਆਨਾਂ ॥
satgur dee-ay mukat Dhi-aanaaN.
Those whom the true Guru blessed with liberation from the love for Maya and the ability to focus on God,
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜਨ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਦਿੱਤੀ,
ਹਰਿ ਪਦੁ ਚੀਨਿੑ ਭਏ ਪਰਧਾਨਾ ॥੬॥
har pad cheeneh bha-ay parDhaanaa. ||6||
they realized the state of union with God and became distinguished. ||6||
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਲ-ਅਵਸਥਾ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਈ ਤੇ ਉਹ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਮੰਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਮੰਨੇ ਗਏ ॥੬॥
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
man tan seetal gur boojh bujhaa-ee.
Those whom the true Guru blessed with the understanding about righteous living, their mind and body became tranquil,
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਠੰਢੇ-ਠਾਰ ਹੋ ਗਏ,
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨਿਵਾਜੇ ਕਿਨਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੭॥
parabh nivaajay kin keemat paa-ee. ||7||
God exalted them spiritually so much, who can estimate the worth of such exalted spiritual life? ||7||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਇਤਨਾ ਉੱਚਾ ਕਰ ਦਿਤਾ, ਉਸ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਕੌਣ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ॥੭॥
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਿ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
kaho naanak gur boojh bujhaa-ee.
O’ Nanak say, the Guru has blessed (me) with this understanding,
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖ- ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਇਹ ਸੂਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਗਤਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੮॥੬॥
naam binaa gat kinai na paa-ee. ||8||6||
that no one has attained the supreme spiritual state without remembering God’s Name with adoration. ||8||6||
ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ (ਕਦੇ) ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ॥੮॥੬॥
ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Raag Prabhati,First Guru:
ਇਕਿ ਧੁਰਿ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਚੀ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ॥
ik Dhur bakhas la-ay gur poorai sachee banat banaa-ee.
As per their preordained destiny, those whom the perfect Guru has blessed with mercy and has made such an eternal change in their mind,
(ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਧੁਰੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਨਸਕ ਬਨਾਵਟ ਅਜੇਹੀ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ ,
ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗ ਰਾਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਦੁਖ ਬਿਸਰੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥
har rang raatay sadaa rang saachaa dukh bisray pat paa-ee. ||1||
that they always remain imbued with God’s love, their mind remains permeated with true love, their sorrows vanish and they receive honor everywhere. ||1||
ਕਿ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ (ਦੇ ਮਨ) ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਚੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਉਹ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਸੋਭਾ ਖੱਟਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਝੂਠੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਕੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
jhoothee durmat kee chaturaa-ee.
Cleverness based on evil intellect inspires mind towards falsehood (Maya)
ਭੈੜੀ ਮੱਤ ਤੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਵੱਲ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਨਸਤ ਬਾਰ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਕਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
binsat baar na laagai kaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and because of which, it doesn’t take much time for such a person to spiritually deteriorate. ||1||Pause||
(ਇਸ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰਦਿਆਂ ਰਤਾ ਚਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਉ ਦੁਖੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਵਿਆਪਸਿ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
manmukh ka-o dukh darad vi-aapas manmukh dukh na jaa-ee.
The self-willed persons remain afflicted with all kinds of sorrow and pain, their sorrow never goes away.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ (ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੇ) ਦੁੱਖ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਦਬਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੁਖ ਕਦੇ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖ ਦਾਤਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਏ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੨॥
sukh dukh daataa gurmukh jaataa mayl la-ay sarnaa-ee. ||2||
But the Guru’s followers realize God, the giver of both pleasure and pain, keeping them in His refuge God unites them with Him. ||2||
ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ,ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਅਭ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਸਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਚਹਿ ਦਿਵਾਨੇ ॥
manmukh tay abh bhagat na hovas ha-umai pacheh divaanay.
The self-willed persons cannot perform devotional worship of God from the core of their heart, because these fools are consumed by their egotism.
ਮਨਮੁਖਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਚਿੱਤ ਦੀ ਇਕਾਗ੍ਰਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚ ਕਮਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਏ ਅੰਦਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਖਿਨੁ ਊਭਿ ਪਇਆਲੀ ਜਬ ਲਗਿ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਜਾਨੇ ॥੩॥
ih manoo-aa khin oobh paa-i-aalee jab lag sabad na jaanay. ||3||
As long as one does not understand the Guru’s word, till then this mind wavers every moment between highs and lows. ||3||
ਜਦੋਂ ਤਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦਾ, ਤਦ ਤਕ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਕਾਰਨ) ਕਦੇ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਪਹੁੰਚਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਦੇ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਡਿੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਭੂਖ ਪਿਆਸਾ ਜਗੁ ਭਇਆ ਤਿਪਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਾਏ ॥
bhookh pi-aasaa jag bha-i-aa tipat nahee bin satgur paa-ay.
The entire world is afflicted with extreme longing for Maya, the worldly riches and power, and does not become satiated without the Guru’s teachings.
ਜਗਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰੇਹ ਨਾਲ ਘਬਰਾਇਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ, ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ l
ਸਹਜੈ ਸਹਜੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਏ ॥੪॥
sahjai sahj milai sukh paa-ee-ai dargeh paiDhaa jaa-ay. ||4||
The spiritual poise and inner peace is attained through the spiritual wisdom and one honorably goes to God’s presence. ||4||
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ) ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਦਰ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਦਰਗਹ ਦਾਨਾ ਬੀਨਾ ਇਕੁ ਆਪੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
dargeh daanaa beenaa ik aapay nirmal gur kee banee.
One understands through the Guru’s immaculate word that in God alone is the far-sighted and omniscient in His court.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ-ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਕੁਛ ਜਾਣਨਹਾਰ ਤੇ ਵੇਖਨਣਹਾਰ ਹੈ l
ਆਪੇ ਸੁਰਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਸਿ ਆਪੇ ਬੂਝੈ ਪਦੁ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੀ ॥੫॥
aapay surtaa sach veechaaras aapay boojhai pad nirbaanee. ||5||
God Himself listens to everyone’s prayers and reflects upon them, and He Himself understands about the desire free spiritual state of mind. ||5||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਦੀਆਂ ਅਰਦਾਸਾਂ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਲੋੜਾਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਵਾਸਨਾ-ਰਹਿਤ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਜਲੁ ਤਰੰਗ ਅਗਨੀ ਪਵਨੈ ਫੁਨਿ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਮਿਲਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
jal tarang agnee pavnai fun tarai mil jagat upaa-i-aa.
God created the waves of water, the fire and the air, and then He created the world by joining the three together.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਅੱਗ ਹਵਾ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਤੱਤ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਜਗਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਐਸਾ ਬਲੁ ਛਲੁ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਦੀਆ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਇਆ ॥੬॥
aisaa bal chhal tin ka-o dee-aa hukmee thaak rahaa-i-aa. ||6||
God has given these elements such power and deceptiveness, (that they can bring havoc, but still) He has kept them under His command. ||6||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤੱਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਤਾਕਤ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਨਾਲ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਬੇ-ਥਵ੍ਹੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਵਰਤਣ ਵਲੋਂ) ਰੋਕ ਭੀ ਰਖਿਆ ॥੬॥
ਐਸੇ ਜਨ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਜਗ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਰਖਿ ਖਜਾਨੈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥1
aisay jan virlay jag andar parakh khajaanai paa-i-aa.
Rare are such persons in this world, whom after evaluating, God has accepted as His own,
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਅਜੇਹੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਖ ਕੇ (ਤੇ ਪਰਵਾਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਾ ਲਿਆ,
ਜਾਤਿ ਵਰਨ ਤੇ ਭਏ ਅਤੀਤਾ ਮਮਤਾ ਲੋਭੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥੭॥1
jaat varan tay bha-ay ateetaa mamtaa lobh chukaa-i-aa. ||7||
they rise above social status and color, and rid themselves of possessiveness and greed. ||7||
ਉਹ ਜਾਤਿ ਤੇ ਵਰਨ ਦੇ ਮਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਲੋਭ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੭॥
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਤੀਰਥ ਸੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਦੁਖੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥
naam ratay tirath say nirmal dukh ha-umai mail chukaa-i-aa.
People imbued with the love of God’s Name are like-immaculate holy places, because they have got rid of the misery and filth of egotism.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਬੰਦੇ ਅਸਲੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਤੀਰਥ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ, ਤੇ ਮੈਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਮੁਕਾ ਲਈ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਪਖਾਲੈ ਜਿਨਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੮॥੭॥
naanak tin kay charan pakhaalai jinaa gurmukh saachaa bhaa-i-aa. ||8||7||
Nanak washes the feet of (humbly serves) those followers of the Guru, whom the eternal God is very pleasing ||8||7||
ਨਾਨਕ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਧੋਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੭॥
