Raag Kaanraa, Chau-Padas (four stanzas), Fourth Guru, First Beat:
ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar sat naam kartaa purakh nirbha-o nirvair akaal moorat ajoonee saibhaN gur parsaad.
There is only one God whose Name is ‘of eternal existence’. He is the creator of the universe, all-pervading, without fear, without enmity, independent of time, beyond the cycle of birth and death, self revealed and is realized by the Guru’s grace.
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ‘ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ’ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਭੈ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਵੈਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ), ਜੋ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾਂ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿਆ ॥
mayraa man saaDh janaaN mil hari-aa.
My mind has blossomed in spiritual bliss after meeting with the saints
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਹਉ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾਂ ਕਉ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਰਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ha-o bal bal bal bal saaDh janaaN ka-o mil sangat paar utri-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I am dedicated to the saintly people again and again, I have crossed over the worldly ocean of vices by joining their company. ||1||Pause||
ਮੈਂ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਮੇਰਾ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਪਨੀ ਹਮ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾਂ ਪਗ ਪਰਿਆ ॥
har har kirpaa karahu parabh apnee ham saaDh janaaN pag pari-aa.
O’ God, please bestow Your mercy, so that I may remain in the humble service of the saintly people.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ) ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗਾ ਰਹਾਂ।
ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਾਧ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਰਿਆ ॥੧॥
Dhan Dhan saaDh jin har parabh jaani-aa mil saaDhoo patit uDhri-aa. ||1||
Really blessed are those saints who have realized God, because even the sinners are saved by associating with the saints. ||1||
ਸ਼ਾਬਾਸ਼ ਹੈ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ। ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਡਿੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਮਨੂਆ ਚਲੈ ਚਲੈ ਬਹੁ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਵਸਗਤਿ ਕਰਿਆ ॥
manoo-aa chalai chalai baho baho biDh mil saaDhoo vasgat kari-aa.
The human mind ordinarily always remains roaming in many different ways, and is brought under control only after meeting the saintly people,
(ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ) ਮਨ (ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ) ਕਈ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਦਾ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਇਉਂ) ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਰ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਉਂ ਜਲ ਤੰਤੁ ਪਸਾਰਿਓ ਬਧਕਿ ਗ੍ਰਸਿ ਮੀਨਾ ਵਸਗਤਿ ਖਰਿਆ ॥੨॥
ji-uN jal tant pasaari-o baDhak garas meenaa vasgat khari-aa. ||2||
just as by spreading his net a fisherman catches the fish and takes it home. ||2||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰੀ ਨੇ ਜਾਲ ਖਿਲਾਰਿਆ, ਅਤੇ ਮੱਛੀ ਨੂੰ (ਕੁੰਡੇ ਵਿਚ) ਫਸਾ ਕੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਲੈ ਗਿਆ ॥੨॥
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ ਸੰਤ ਭਲ ਨੀਕੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਮਲੁ ਲਹੀਆ ॥
har kay sant sant bhal neekay mil sant janaa mal lahee-aa.
Blessed and virtuous are the saints of God, the filth of vices from the mind vanishes by meeting with those saints.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਭਲੇ ਅਤੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਮਨ ਦੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਰਤੁ ਗਇਆ ਸਭੁ ਨੀਕਰਿ ਜਿਉ ਸਾਬੁਨਿ ਕਾਪਰੁ ਕਰਿਆ ॥੩॥
ha-umai durat ga-i-aa sabh neekar ji-o saabun kaapar kari-aa. ||3||
just as dirt from the clothes is removed with soap, similarly the dirt of ego and sins goes away by meeting and following the saint’s teachings. ||3||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸਾਬਣ ਨਾਲ ਕੱਪੜਾ ਸਾਫ਼ ਕਰ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਸਾਰਾ ਨਿਕਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਿਲਾਟਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਚਰਨ ਉਰ ਧਰਿਆ ॥
mastak lilaat likhi-aa Dhur thaakur gur satgur charan ur Dhari-aa.
The one whom God preordained, enshrined the Guru’s teachings in his heart:
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਧੁਰ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਲਿਖ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਲਏ;
ਸਭੁ ਦਾਲਦੁ ਦੂਖ ਭੰਜ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਧਰਿਆ ॥੪॥੧॥
sabh daalad dookh bhanj parabh paa-i-aa jan naanak naam uDhri-aa. ||4||1||
O’ devotee Nanak, he has realized God, the destroyer of all destitution and suffering and crossed over the world-ocean of vices through Naam. ||4||1||
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਨੇ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਸਾਰੀ ਗ਼ਰੀਬੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਗਿਆ ॥੪॥੧॥

Raag Kaanraa, Fourth Guru:
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਪਗ ਰੇਨ ॥
mayraa man sant janaa pag rayn.
My mind seeks the dust of the feet (most humble service) of the saintly people
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ (ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹੈ);
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਨੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਕੋਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਭੇਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har har kathaa sunee mil sangat man koraa har rang bhayn. ||1|| rahaa-o.
because whoever has listened to God’s praises by joining the holy company, his unappeasable mind got drenched with the love of God. ||1||Pause||
ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਸੁਣੀ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਕੋਰਾ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਭਿੱਜ ਗਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਹਮ ਅਚਿਤ ਅਚੇਤ ਨ ਜਾਨਹਿ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਕੀਏ ਸੁਚਿਤ ਚਿਤੇਨ ॥
ham achit achayt na jaaneh gat mit gur kee-ay suchit chitayn.
We humans are unaware and oblivious of God and don’t know His worth and status, but those who followed the Guru’s teachings, he made them wise and aware about God.
ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਲੋਂ) ਬੇ-ਧਿਆਨੇ ਗ਼ਾਫ਼ਿਲ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਅਸੀਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਕਿਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕੇਡਾ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ। (ਜਿਹੜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਗਏ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਿ ਕੀਓ ਅੰਗੀਕ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੇਨ ॥੧॥
parabh deen da-i-aal kee-o aNgeekarit man har har naam japayn. ||1||
The one whom the merciful God of the meek gave His support, he started lovingly remembering God’s Name in his heart. ||1||
ਦੀਨਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪੱਖ ਕੀਤਾ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੧॥
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਕਟਿ ਦੇਵਉ ਹੀਅਰਾ ਤੇਨ ॥
har kay sant mileh man pareetam kat dayva-o hee-araa tayn.
If I get to meet the saints of God who are so dear to me, I would surrender my heart to them,
ਜੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਮਿਲ ਪੈਣ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣਾ) ਹਿਰਦਾ ਕੱਟ ਕੇ ਦੇ ਦਿਆਂ,
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ ਮਿਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹਮ ਕੀਏ ਪਤਿਤ ਪਵੇਨ ॥੨॥
har kay sant milay har mili-aa ham kee-ay patit pavayn. ||2||
because those who have met the saints of God, have realized God; the saintly persons purify the sinners like us. ||2||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੰਤ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ। ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਅਸਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਤਿਤਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਜਨ ਊਤਮ ਜਗਿ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਜਿਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪਾਥਰ ਸੇਨ ॥
har kay jan ootam jag kahee-ahi jin mili-aa paathar sayn.
The humble devotees of God are said to be exalted in this world, meeting whom even the stone hearted people become compassionate.
ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਉੱਚੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਅਖਵਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਿਆਂ ਪੱਥਰ-ਦਿਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭੀ ਨਰਮ-ਦਿਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
