ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਮਨਿ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕੋ ਪਤੀਆਇ ॥
bin satgur kinai na paa-i-o man vaykhhu ko patee-aa-ay.
No one has ever realized God without following the true Guru’s teachings; anyone may reflect and assess it in their mind.
ਬੇਸ਼ੱਕ ਕੋਈ ਧਿਰ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਰਨਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲਵੇ, ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਸਰਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਭੀ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ) ਹਾਸਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਭੇਟੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
har kirpaa tay satgur paa-ee-ai bhaytai sahj subhaa-ay.
It is by God’s grace that one meets the true Guru and follows his teachings in a state of spiritual poise and love.
ਗੁਰੂ (ਭੀ) ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਾਗਾ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੫॥
manmukh bharam bhulaa-i-aa bin bhaagaa har Dhan na paa-ay. ||5||
However, a self-willed person is misled by doubts, and cannot receive the wealth of God’s Name without good fortune.||5||
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਨੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕਿਸਮਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੫॥
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਸਭਾ ਧਾਤੁ ਹੈ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
tarai gun sabhaa Dhaat hai parh parh karahi veechaar.
People keep reading the scriptures and reflect again and again on the three traits (vice, virtue and power), which is nothing but the love for Maya.
(ਲੋਕ ਵੇਦ ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡ ਦਾ ਹੀ) ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ, ਇਹ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਨਿਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਨਹੁ ਪਾਇਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥
mukat kaday na hova-ee nahu paa-iniH mokh du-aar.
One can never get rid of the love for Maya with this endeavor, and those people cannot find the way to freedom from vices.
(ਇਸ ਉੱਦਮ ਨਾਲ) ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ, (ਉਹ ਲੋਕ) ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪਾਣ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦੇ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬੰਧਨ ਨ ਤੁਟਹੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੬॥
bin satgur banDhan na tuthee naam na lagai pi-aar. ||6||
Without following the teachings of the Guru, the bonds of the love for Maya are not broken, and love for God’s Name does not well up in the mind. ||6||
ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਸਰਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀਆਂ) ਫਾਹੀਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਟੁੱਟਦੀਆਂ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੬॥
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮੋਨੀ ਥਕੇ ਬੇਦਾਂ ਕਾ ਅਭਿਆਸੁ ॥
parh parh pandit monee thakay baydaaN kaa abhi-aas.
The pundits and the sages get tired of reading and practicing the Vedas again and again.
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਲੋਕ ਮੁਨੀ ਲੋਕ (ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਥੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਈ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲੇ) ਵੇਦ (ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੀ) ਅਭਿਆਸ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਨਹ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
har naam chit na aavee nah nij ghar hovai vaas.
But in this way, neither God’s Name gets enshrined in their mind, nor are they able to abide within their heart, the abode of God.
(ਪਰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੱਸਦਾ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਿਰਹੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਪਟ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥੭॥
jamkaal sirahu na utrai antar kapat vinaas. ||7||
The demon (fear) of death does not stop hovering over their heads; and the sense of deceit within their mind leads to spiritual deterioration. ||7||
ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਦੂਤ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਟਦਾ, ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਠੱਗੀ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਵੈ ਨੋ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਪਰਤਾਪਦਾ ਵਿਣੁ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
har naavai no sabh ko partaapdaa vin bhaagaaN paa-i-aa na jaa-ay.
Though everyone yearns for God’s Name, but God cannot be realized without the good fortune
(ਉਂਞ ਤਾਂ) ਹਰੇਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਤਾਂਘਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਚੰਗੀ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
nadar karay gur bhaytee-ai har naam vasai man aa-ay.
When God bestows His gracious glance, one meets the Guru and God’s Name manifests in one’s mind by following the Guru’s teachings.
ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੇ ਹੀ ਪਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਰਹਾਂ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੮॥੨॥
naanak naamay hee pat oopjai har si-o rahaaN samaa-ay. ||8||2||
O Nanak, one attains honor (both here and hereafter) only by remembering God’s Name; by the Guru’s grace, I remain immersed in God’s Name. ||8||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ (ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਸਦਾ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੮॥੨॥

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad.
One eternal God, realized by the grace of the True Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਾਰੈ ਲਾਏ ॥
har har kirpaa karay gur kee kaarai laa-ay.
God inspires that person to follow the Guru’s teachings upon whom He bestows his mercy,
(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਵਿਚ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਦੁਖੁ ਪਲ੍ਹ੍ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
dukh palHar har naam vasaa-ay.
By dispelling that person’s sorrows, the Guru enshrines God’s Name in him.
ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚੀ ਗਤਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥
saachee gat saachai chit laa-ay.
That person focuses his mind on God and attains the higher spiritual state,
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥੧॥
gur kee banee sabad sunaa-ay. ||1||
who recites the divine command to his mind through the Guru’s word. ||1||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਿ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥
man mayray har har sayv niDhaan.
O’ my mind, always keep remembering God, the real treasure.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹੁ, (ਇਹੀ ਹੈ) ਅਸਲ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ।
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur kirpaa tay har Dhan paa-ee-ai an-din laagai sahj Dhi-aan. ||1|| rahaa-o.
This treasure of God’s Name is attained by the Guru’s grace, and mind always remains absorbed in a state of spiritual poise. ||1||Pause||
ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ (ਇਹ) ਧਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੁੜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥
bin pir kaaman karay seeNgaar.
Just as a woman who is without a husband but adorns herself with ornaments,
(ਜਿਵੇਂ ਜਿਹੜੀ) ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਖਸਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੋਈ ਸਰੀਰਕ) ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਦੁਹਚਾਰਣੀ ਕਹੀਐ ਨਿਤ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥
duhchaarnee kahee-ai nit ho-ay khu-aar.
is said to be an immoral person and is disgraced every day;
ਉਹ ਭੈੜੇ ਆਚਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਆਖੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਬਾਦਿ ਆਚਾਰੁ ॥
manmukh kaa ih baad aachaar.
similarly worthless is the conduct of the self-willed persons,
(ਤਿਵੇਂ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਰਵਈਆ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਵਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
baho karam darirhaaveh naam visaar. ||2||
who forsaking God’s Name, strongly urge people to practice many faith rituals that are merely for show. ||2||
ਕਿ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਹੋਰ ਬਥੇਰੇ ਵਿਖਾਵੇ ਦੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਾਕੀਦ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਬਣਿਆ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥
gurmukh kaaman bani-aa seegaar.
The embellishments behooves that person who follows the Guru’s teachings,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰ ਫਬਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਬਦੇ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥
sabday pir raakhi-aa ur Dhaar.
because that person keeps the Master-God enshrined in the heart through the Guru’s word.
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਏਕੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥
ayk pachhaanai ha-umai maar.
One who realizes God by getting rid of her ego,
ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਮ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸੋਭਾਵੰਤੀ ਕਹੀਐ ਨਾਰਿ ॥੩॥
sobhaavantee kahee-ai naar. ||3||
is considered a gloriously reputable woman. ||3||
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਭਾ ਵਾਲੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਦਾਤੇ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
bin gur daatay kinai na paa-i-aa.
No one has ever realized God without following the teachings of the Guru who alone is the benefactor of Naam.
(ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ) ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਭੀ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ) ਹਾਸਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਲੋਭਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਲੋਭਾਇਆ ॥
manmukh lobh doojai lobhaa-i-aa.
The self-willed person, because of his greed for Maya, remains engrossed in the love for duality (things other than God).
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਲੋਭ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਹੋਰ (ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ) ਵਿਚ ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਐਸੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
aisay gi-aanee boojhhu ko-ay.
Only a rare divinely wise person has understood,
ਰੱਬ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਜਣਾ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਪਈ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥
bin gur bhaytay mukat na ho-ay. ||4||
that without meeting the Guru and following his teachings, one does not get emancipated (liberated from the vices). ||4||
ਤਾਂ ਇਉਂ ਸਮਝ ਰੱਖੋ ਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ॥੪॥
ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਕਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
kahi kahi kahan kahai sabh ko-ay.
Everyone can boast any time that one performs devotional worship of God,
(ਇਹ) ਫੜ (ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ) ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਮਾਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਮਨ ਮੂਏ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
bin man moo-ay bhagat na ho-ay.
but without one’s mind coming under control, God’s worship cannot be performed.
ਪਰ ਮਨ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਭਗਤੀ ਹੋ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਗਿਆਨ ਮਤੀ ਕਮਲ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥
gi-aan matee kamal pargaas.
One whose mind gets delighted like a lotus in bloom through the intellect of divine wisdom,
ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਵਾਲੀ ਮੱਤ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਜਿਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਕੰਵਲ ਦਾ ਖਿੜਾਉ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਤੁ ਘਟਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੫॥
tit ghat naamai naam nivaas. ||5||
Naam is enshrined forever in that heart by always remembering Naam. ||5||
ਨਾਮ (ਜਪਣ) ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਸਦਾ ਲਈ) ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਹਉਮੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
ha-umai bhagat karay sabh ko-ay.
In egotism, everyone pretends to performs devotional worship,
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਨਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
naa man bheejai naa sukh ho-ay.
but in this way, neither the mind gets immersed in God’s Name, nor the spiritual bliss arises in him.
ਪਰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਨਾਲ ਤਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਉਸਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਨੰਦ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਆਪੁ ਜਾਣਾਏ ॥
kahi kahi kahan aap jaanaa-ay.
The one who boasts and reveals that he is a true devotee of God,
ਇਹ ਫੜ (ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ) ਮਾਰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ (ਭਗਤ) ਜ਼ਾਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਰਥੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਭੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥੬॥
birthee bhagat sabh janam gavaa-ay. ||6||
all his worship goes in vain, and his human life is a total waste. ||6||
(ਪਰ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ) ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਾਰਾ) ਜਨਮ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਸੇ ਭਗਤ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਏ ॥
say bhagat satgur man bhaa-ay.
The real devotees are those who are pleasing to the Guru’s mind,
(ਅਸਲ) ਭਗਤ ਉਹ ਹਨ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
an-din naam rahay liv laa-ay.
and always remain lovingly attuned to God’s Name.
ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਦ ਹੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵੇਖਹਿ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥
sad hee naam vaykheh hajoor.
They always envision God abiding with them,
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਗ-ਸੰਗ ਵੇਖਦੇ ਹਨ,
