ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਪਾਧਰੁ ਜਾਣਿ ॥
satgur sabdee paaDhar jaan.
One who understands the straight path to righteous living through the true Guru’s divine word,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਪੱਧਰਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਤਕੀਐ ਸਾਚੈ ਤਾਣਿ ॥
gur kai takee-ai saachai taan.
leaning on the support of the Guru’s word, he attains the support of the eternal God’s Name.
ਉਹ (ਇਸ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਸਹਾਰੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਸਿ ਰੂੜ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਬਾਣਿ ॥
naam samHaalas roorhHee baan.
Through the Guru’s beautiful divine word, he enshrines God’s Name in his heart.
ਉਹ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਥੈਂ ਭਾਵੈ ਦਰੁ ਲਹਸਿ ਪਿਰਾਣਿ ॥੨॥
thaiN bhaavai dar lahas piraan. ||2||
O’ God, he recognizes Your presence, only when it pleases You. ||2||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਦੋਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰ ਪਛਾਣ ਕੇ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਊਡਾਂ ਬੈਸਾ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰ ॥
oodaaN baisaa ayk liv taar.
By focusing my mind continuously on God, when I fly high in my imagination or sit down in composure in my spiritual journey,
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਜੀਵਨ-ਪੰਧ ਵਿਚ ਉਡਾਰੀਆਂ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਜਾਂ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਬੈਠ ਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਾਮ ਆਧਾਰ ॥
gur kai sabad naam aaDhaar.
and receive the support of God’s Name through the Guru’s word,
ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
ਨਾ ਜਲੁ ਡੂੰਗਰੁ ਨ ਊਚੀ ਧਾਰ ॥
naa jal doongar na oochee Dhaar.
then neither I have to cross the world-ocean of vices or the mountain of ego, nor any high mountain range of vices obstruct my spiritual journey.
(ਤਾਂ) ਮੇਰੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਸਤੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦਾ (ਵਿਕਾਰ-) ਜਲ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ (ਹਉਮੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦਾ) ਪਹਾੜ ਖੜਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਉੱਚਾ ਲੰਮਾ ਪਹਾੜੀ ਸਿਲਸਿਲਾ ਆ ਖਲੋਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਤਹ ਮਗੁ ਨ ਚਾਲਣਹਾਰ ॥੩॥
nij ghar vaasaa tah mag na chaalanhaar. ||3||
In that spiritual state one resides in his own heart (God’s presence), and neither there is path of the cycle of birth and death, nor is there any traveller. ||3||
ਸ੍ਵੈ ਸਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮੇਰਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਹ (ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਾਲਾ) ਰਸਤਾ ਫੜਨਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਰਸਤੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਜਿਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਵਸਹਿ ਤੂਹੈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਬੀਜਉ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ॥
jit ghar vaseh toohai biDh jaaneh beeja-o mahal na jaapai.
O’ God, only You know the state of mind of the one in whose heart You manifest and he does not think of any other place for support.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਆਸਰਾ ਸੁੱਝਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਸਮਝ ਨ ਹੋਵੀ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਦਬਿਆ ਛਾਪੈ ॥
satgur baajhahu samajh na hovee sabh jag dabi-aa chhaapai.
The entire world is under pressure to look for any support other than God’s support; the world remains ignorant about it without the Guru’s teachings,
ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਆਸਰੇ ਦੀ ਝਾਕ ਦੇ ਦਬਾਉ ਹੇਠ ਦਬਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਵ ਕਰੈ ਬਿਲਲਾਤਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ॥
karan palaav karai billata-o bin gur naam na jaapai.
it bewails and laments and without following the Guru’s teachings it cannot remember God’s Name.
(ਜਗਤ) ਤਰਲੈ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਵਿਲਕਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਪਲ ਪੰਕਜ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਛਡਾਏ ਜੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਿਞਾਪੈ ॥੪॥
pal pankaj meh naam chhadaa-ay jay gur sabad sinjaapai. ||4||
But if one recognize and follows the Guru’s word, then God’s Name frees him from the pressures of worldly bonds in the twinkling of an eye.||4||
ਪਰ ਜੇ ਜੀਵ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਏ ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਖ ਦੇ ਇਕ ਫੋਰ ਵਿਚ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਦਬਾਉ ਤੋਂ) ਛਡਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਇਕਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਧੇ ਮੁਗਧ ਗਵਾਰ ॥
ik moorakh anDhay mugaDh gavaar.
In this world there are many foolish people who are ignorant and blinded in their love for materialism.
(ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਪਏ ਹਨ।
ਇਕਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭੈ ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰ ॥
ik satgur kai bhai naam aDhaar.
But there are also many others who take the support of God’s Name under revered fear of the true Guru.
ਪਰ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਐਸੇ ਭੀ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਮੀਠੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਧਾਰ ॥
saachee banee meethee amrit Dhaar.
They relish the sweet ambrosial nectar of Naam through the divine words of God’s praises,
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੀ ਧਾਰ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ ,
ਜਿਨਿ ਪੀਤੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰ ॥੫॥
jin peetee tis mokh du-aar. ||5||
and whosoever has relished it, has found the way to freedom from the love for Maya and vices. ||5||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੀ ਧਾਰ ਪੀਤੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ਾ ਲੱਭ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਨਾਮੁ ਭੈ ਭਾਇ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਹੀ ਗੁਰ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਚੁ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
naam bhai bhaa-ay ridai vasaahee gur karnee sach banee.
Those who enshrine God’s Name in their hearts while living under the revered fear of God are doing what the Guru’s divine word teaches them to do.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਇੰਦੁ ਵਰਸੈ ਧਰਤਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥
ind varsai Dharat suhaavee ghat ghat jot samaanee.
Like a cloud, the Guru showers them with God’s mercy, because of it their hearts become beautiful and they see God’s light permeating each and every body.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ-ਬੱਦਲ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਦੀ) ਵਰਖਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਦਿੱਸਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਕਾਲਰਿ ਬੀਜਸਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਐਸੀ ਨਿਗੁਰੇ ਕੀ ਨੀਸਾਣੀ ॥
kaalar beejas durmat aisee niguray kee neesaanee.
The sign of a person who is without the Guru’s teachings is that because of his evil intellect he keeps doing useless deeds like sowing the seeds in saline soil.
ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬੇ-ਮੁਖ ਦੀ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨੀ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਭੈੜੀ ਮੱਤੇ ਲਗ ਕੇ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਕੱਲਰ ਵਿਚ ਬੀ ਬੀਜਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਘੋਰ ਅੰਧਾਰਾ ਡੂਬਿ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਾਣੀ ॥੬॥
satgur baajhahu ghor anDhaaraa doob mu-ay bin paanee. ||6||
Those who remain deprived of the Guru’s teachings, are in pitch darkness of ignorance, and they keep drowning into the ocean of vices. ||6||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਦੇ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ (ਹੱਥ ਪੈਰ ਮਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ), ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਗੋਤੇ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੬॥
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਨੋ ਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਰਜਾਇ ॥
jo kichh keeno so parabhoo rajaa-ay.
Whatever is created, God has created it as per His will.
ਜੋ ਭੀ ਖੇਡ ਰਚੀ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਰਚੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਮੇਟਣਾ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
jo Dhur likhi-aa so maytnaa na jaa-ay.
Whatever is in anybody’s preordained destiny, that cannot be erased by anyone.
(ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਜੋ ਲੇਖ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ) ਧੁਰੋਂ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਕਿਸੇ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਮਿਟਾਇਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਬਾਧਾ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
hukmay baaDhaa kaar kamaa-ay.
Every being, bound by God’s command, acts according to his previous deeds.
ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੂਰਬਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਏਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਾਚੈ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੭॥
ayk sabad raachai sach samaa-ay. ||7||
One who gets imbued with the divine word of God’s praises, remains absorbed in God’s Name. ||7||
ਜੇਹੜਾਜੀਵ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਚਹੁ ਦਿਸਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰਾ ਚਹੁ ਦਿਸਿ ਨਾਮ ਪਤਾਲੰ ॥
chahu dis hukam vartai parabh tayraa chahu dis naam pataalaN.
O’ God, Your command is running the entire creation and Your Name pervades everywhere even the nether regions of the world.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਹੁਕਮ ਚੱਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਨੀਵੇਂ ਤੋਂ ਨੀਵੇਂ ਥਾਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਵੱਜ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਚਾ ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਬੈਆਲੰ ॥
sabh meh sabad vartai parabh saachaa karam milai bay-aalaN.
God’s eternal command pervades the entire creation, but only a fortunate one realizes the eternal God through His grace.
ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰੌ ਰੁਮਕ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਅਬਿਨਾਸ਼ੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਾਂਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਊਭੌ ਖੁਧਿਆ ਨਿਦ੍ਰਾ ਕਾਲੰ ॥
jaaNman marnaa deesai sir oobhou khuDhi-aa nidraa kaalaN.
The misery of the cycle of birth & death, hunger for worldly wealth, the slumber of love for Maya and spiritual deterioration are seen hovering over them.
ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਖੜਾ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭੁੱਖ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਖੜੇ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਚੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਰਸਾਲੰ ॥੮॥੧॥੪॥
naanak naam milai man bhaavai saachee nadar rasaalaN. ||8||1||4||
O’ Nanak, on whom is the grace of the loving God, that person is blessed with the gift of Naam which is pleasing to the mind. ||8||1||4||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਭ ਰਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੋਮੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਜਿਸ ਬੰਦੇ ਉਤੇ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੧॥੪॥

Raag Malaar, First Guru:
ਮਰਣ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਗਤਿ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
maran mukat gat saar na jaanai.
ur ignorant mind does not appreciate the high spiritual state, nor does it know the means to avoid spiritual deterioration,
ਅੰਞਾਣ ਜਿੰਦ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦੀ, ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ (ਦਾ ਉਪਾਉ) ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੀ।
ਕੰਠੇ ਬੈਠੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥੧॥
kanthay baithee gur sabad pachhaanai. ||1||
it tries to understand through the Guru’s teachings but staying away from him, the mind does not understand the Guru’s world. ||1||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਣ ਦਾ ਜਤਨ ਤਾਂ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਪਰ (ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ) ਲਾਂਭੇ ਹੀ ਬੈਠੀ ਹੋਈ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਲੀਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ) ॥੧॥
ਤੂ ਕੈਸੇ ਆੜਿ ਫਾਥੀ ਜਾਲਿ ॥
too kaisay aarh faathee jaal.
O’ mind how did you get caught in the net of love for materialism?
(ਪੰਛੀ ਆੜਿ ਵਾਂਗ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਉਤੇ ਵਧੀਕੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੇ ਜਿੰਦੇ!) ਤੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਫਸ ਗਈ?
ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਜਾਚਹਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
alakh na jaacheh ridai samHaal. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Why don’t you beg for the gift of spiritual life by remembering the imperceptible God in your heart. ||1||Pause||
ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ) ਕਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਗਦੀ? ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਏਕ ਜੀਅ ਕੈ ਜੀਆ ਖਾਹੀ ॥
ayk jee-a kai jee-aa khaahee.
O’ my mind, for the sake of your own life you usurp what belongs to others,
ਹੇ ਆੜਿ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਇਕ ਜਿੰਦ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ (ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਚੁਗ ਚੁਗ ਕੇ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਖਾਂਦੀ ਹੈਂ (ਹੇ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਠੱਗੀ-ਠੋਰੀ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈਂ)।
ਜਲਿ ਤਰਤੀ ਬੂਡੀ ਜਲ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੨॥
jal tartee boodee jal maahee. ||2||
like a stork floating in the water trying to catch other creatures, you get caught in the web of worldly attachments and eventually deteriorate spiritually. ||2||
ਤੂੰ (ਜਲ-ਜੰਤ ਫੜਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਤਰਦੀ ਤਰਦੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਡੁੱਬ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈਂ (ਹੇ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਮਾਇਆ-ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਦੀ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਇਸੇ ਮਾਇਆ-ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈਂ) ॥੨॥
ਸਰਬ ਜੀਅ ਕੀਏ ਪ੍ਰਤਪਾਨੀ ॥
sarab jee-a kee-ay paratpaanee.
You have tortured all creatures that came in your contact,
(ਆਪਣੇ ਸੁਆਰਥ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁਖੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,
ਜਬ ਪਕੜੀ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਪਛੁਤਾਨੀ ॥੩॥
jab pakrhee tab hee pachhutaanee. ||3||
but when you get caught, you regret and repent for your misdeeds. ||3||
ਜਦੋਂ ਤੂੰ (ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ) ਫੜੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈਂ ਤਦੋਂ ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦੀ ਹੈਂ ॥੩॥
ਜਬ ਗਲਿ ਫਾਸ ਪੜੀ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
jab gal faas parhee at bhaaree.
When a heavy noose is placed around the neck of the stork,
ਜਦੋਂ ਆੜਿ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ (ਕਿਸੇ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰੀ ਦੀ) ਬਹੁਤ ਭਾਰੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਊਡਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਪੰਖ ਪਸਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
ood na saakai pankh pasaaree. ||4||
then it cannot spread its wings and fly away; similarly when human mind gets entrapped in worldly allurements, it spiritually dies and cannot realize God. ||4||
ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਖੰਭ ਖਿਲਾਰ ਕੇ ਉੱਡ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ (ਜਦੋਂ ਜਿੰਦ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਉਡਾਰੀ ਲਾਣ ਜੋਗੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ, ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ) ॥੪॥
ਰਸਿ ਚੂਗਹਿ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਵਾਰਿ ॥
ras choogeh manmukh gaavaar.
O’ foolish and self-willed mind, you joyfully hunt for worldly comforts and usurp the rights of others to satisfy your greed.
ਹੇ ਅਮੋੜ ਮਨ ! ਤੂੰ ਬੜੀ ਮੌਜ ਨਾਲ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਚੋਗਾ) ਚੁਗਦੀ ਹੈਂ (ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਦੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈਂ)।
ਫਾਥੀ ਛੂਟਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੫॥
faathee chhooteh gun gi-aan beechaar. ||5||
follow the Guru’s teachings and enshrine God’s praises in your mind, only then will you be able to escape from the web of Maya and spiritual deterioration. ||5||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੋਚ-ਮੰਡਲ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ, ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਤੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਜਾਲ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਸਕੇਂਗੀ ॥੫॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਤੂਟੈ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ॥
satgur sayv tootai jamkaal.
O’ my mind, take refuge in the true Guru and follow his teachings, only then the noose of spiritual death can be broken.
(ਹੇ ਜਿੰਦੇ!) ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਉ, ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਾਲ ਟੁੱਟ ਸਕੇਗਾ।
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲੁ ॥੬॥
hirdai saachaa sabad samHaal. ||6||
Therefore by taking support of the Guru’s teachings, enshrine God’s Name in your heart. ||6||
(ਛੁਟਕਾਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਾਲਾ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੰਭਾਲ ॥੬॥
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
gurmat saachee sabad hai saar.
O’ my mind, the Guru’s teachings are eternally true and his divine word is sublime.
(ਹੇ ਜਿੰਦੇ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮੱਤ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਖੈ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੭॥
har kaa naam rakhai ur Dhaar. ||7||
Therefore, keep God’s Name enshrined in your heart. ||7||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਂਭ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ ॥੭॥
ਸੇ ਦੁਖ ਆਗੈ ਜਿ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਲਾਸੇ ॥
say dukh aagai je bhog bilaasay.
The worldly pleasures which are enjoyed, become the cause of sufferings and sorrows in the journey of life.
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਭੋਗ-ਬਿਲਾਸ ਕਰੀਦੇ ਹਨ (ਬੜੇ ਚਾਉ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਣੀਦੇ ਹਨ) ਉਹ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ ਦੁੱਖ ਬਣ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਆ ਵਾਪਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਾਚੇ ॥੮॥੨॥੫॥
naanak mukat nahee bin naavai saachay. ||8||2||5||
O’ Nanak, there can be no deliverance from these sufferings without God’s Name. ||8||2||5||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ॥੮॥੨॥੫॥
