ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਇਹੁ ਗੁਫਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
gur kai sabad ih gufaa veechaaray.
The one who explores his mind and body through the Guru’s word,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ-ਗੁਫ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਵਿਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਮੁਰਾਰੇ ॥
naam niranjan antar vasai muraaray.
finds that the Immaculate Naam, the Name of God, abides deep within the self.
ਉਹ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਕਾਲਖ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਸਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਏ ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
har gun gaavai sabad suhaa-ay mil pareetam sukh paavni-aa. ||4||
The one who sings God’s praises, through the Guru’s word, he gets honor in God’s court and he is able to enjoy bliss by realizing his beloved God.
ਉਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ {ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਜਿਉਂ ਜਿਉਂ} ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਕਰੁ ਲਾਏ ॥
jam jaagaatee doojai bhaa-ay kar laa-ay.
The demon (fear) of death troubles the one, who is attached to duality.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਮਸੂਲੀਆ ਜਮ-ਰਾਜ ਮਸੂਲ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਵਹੁ ਭੂਲੇ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਏ ॥
naavhu bhoolay day-ay sajaa-ay.
He (the demon) inflicts punishment on whom, who has forgotten God’s Name.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਘੜੀ ਮੁਹਤ ਕਾ ਲੇਖਾ ਲੇਵੈ ਰਤੀਅਹੁ ਮਾਸਾ ਤੋਲ ਕਢਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
gharhee muhat kaa laykhaa layvai ratee-ahu maasaa tol kadhaavani-aa. ||5||
He is called to account for each and every moment of his life. Even the minutest deed of his life is judged.
ਜਮਰਾਜ ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਇਕ ਇਕ ਘੜੀ ਦਾ, ਅੱਧੀ ਅੱਧੀ ਘੜੀ ਦਾ ਲੇਖਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਕ ਇਕ ਰੱਤੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ, ਇਕ ਇਕ ਮਾਸਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਤੋਲ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਪਿਰੁ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
pay-ee-arhai pir chaytay naahee.
The soul-bride, who does not remember her Master while in her parents home (this world),
ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪੇਕੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ (ਇਸ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀ l
ਦੂਜੈ ਮੁਠੀ ਰੋਵੈ ਧਾਹੀ ॥
doojai muthee rovai Dhaahee.
is being cheated by duality; she shall weep bitterly in the end.
ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਸਿ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਲੁਟਾਂਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਲੇਖਾ ਦੇਣ ਵੇਲੇ ਢਾਹਾਂ ਮਾਰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਰੋਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਖਰੀ ਕੁਆਲਿਓ ਕੁਰੂਪਿ ਕੁਲਖਣੀ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਪਿਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
kharee ku-aali-o kuroop kulkhanee supnai pir nahee paavni-aa. ||6||
Such a soul bride is of low status, vile, and wicked. she did not meet (remember) her Master even in her dream.
ਉਹ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਭੈੜੇ ਘਰ ਦੀ ਭੈੜੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਾਲੀ ਭੈੜੇ ਲੱਛਣਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੀ ਕਹੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਪੇਕੇ ਘਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਿਆਂ) ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਦੇ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਨਾਹ ਕੀਤਾ l
ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਪਿਰੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥
pay-ee-arhai pir man vasaa-i-aa.
She who enshrines her Master in her mind while at her parents home (this world).
ਪੇਕੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖਿਆ,
ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਹਦੂਰਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
poorai gur hadoor dikhaa-i-aa.
His Presence is revealed to her by the Perfect Guru.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਅੰਗ-ਸੰਗ (ਵੱਸਦਾ) ਵਿਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ.
ਕਾਮਣਿ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਕੰਠਿ ਲਾਇ ਸਬਦੇ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੈ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
kaaman pir raakhi-aa kanth laa-ay sabday pir raavai sayj suhaavani-aa. ||7||
Such a soul-bride keeps her Master in her heart. By following the Guru’s word, she enjoys the company of her Master.
ਐਸੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਦੀ ਸੇਜ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਸਦਿ ਬੁਲਾਏ ॥ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਉ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
aapnaa naa-o man vasaa-ay. aapay dayvai sad bulaa-ay.
God Himself sends out the calls (becomes merciful on us), and He enshrines His Name within our minds.
(ਪਰ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ) ਸੱਦ ਕੇ ਬੁਲਾ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ) ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੨੮॥੨੯॥
naanak naam milai vadi-aa-ee an-din sadaa gun gaavani-aa. ||8||28||29||
O’ Nanak, the one who realizes Naam receives honor both here and in God’s court, and he always keep singing God’s praises.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਵਡਿਆਈ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ l

Raag Maajh, by the Third Guru:
ਊਤਮ ਜਨਮੁ ਸੁਥਾਨਿ ਹੈ ਵਾਸਾ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਘਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥
ootam janam suthaan hai vaasaa.satgur sayveh ghar maahi udaasaa.
Those who, by following the true Guru’s teachings remain detached from the worldly entanglements while living in their households. Sublime is their birth, and the place where they live.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ-ਪਰਨਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ) ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੈਦਾਇਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਸਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੀ ਜਗ੍ਹਾ l
ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
har rang raheh sadaa rang raatay har ras man tariptaavni-aa. ||1||
They always remain imbued with God’s love and thus their minds remain satiated with the elixir of Naam.
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਰੱਜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਪੜਿ ਬੁਝਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥
ha-o vaaree jee-o vaaree parh bujh man vasaavani-aa.
I dedicate myself to those who after reading and understanding the holy books, enshrine Naam in their mind.
ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜੇਹੜੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪੜਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਹਿ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmukh parheh har naam salaaheh dar sachai sobhaa paavni-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The Guru’s followers read the scriptures and praise God’s Name; they are honored in the True Court.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ, ਨਾਮ ਸਲਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਉ ਹਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
alakh abhay-o har rahi-aa samaa-ay.
The imperceptible and incomprehensible God pervades everywhere.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਭੇਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਉਹ (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ।
ਉਪਾਇ ਨ ਕਿਤੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਏ ॥
upaa-ay na kitee paa-i-aa jaa-ay.
He cannot be realized by any effort,
ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ,
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਨਦਰੀ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
kirpaa karay taa satgur bhaytai nadree mayl milaavani-aa. ||2||
Only if God shows mercy, He causes one to meet the True Guru, and the person is united with Him through His grace.
ਜਦੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਕਿਸੇ ਜੀਵ ਉੱਤੇ) ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪਣੀ) ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਅਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਪੜੈ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
doojai bhaa-ay parhai nahee boojhai.
The person, who studies the scriptures, while attached to duality does not understand these. He does not get any divine enlightenment.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਜੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਭੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹਨੂੰ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ l
ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਲੂਝੈ ॥
taribaDh maa-i-aa kaaran loojhai.
He keep agonizing for the three phased maya (vice, virtue and power).
ਉਹ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਭੀ) ਤ੍ਰਿਗੁਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ (ਅੰਦਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਕੁੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੂਟਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
taribaDh banDhan tooteh gur sabdee gur sabdee mukat karaavani-aa. ||3||
The bonds of the three-phased Maya are broken by the Guru’s word. Through the Guru’s word, liberation is achieved.
ਤ੍ਰਿਗੁਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਟੁੱਟਦੇ ਹਨ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੀ ਮੋਖਸ਼ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਚੰਚਲੁ ਵਸਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
ih man chanchal vas na aavai.
This impulsive mind cannot be held steady.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਚੰਚਲ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਨਾਲ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ।
ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਧਾਵੈ ॥
dubiDhaa laagai dah dis Dhaavai.
Attached to duality, mind wanders in all the ten directions.
ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਡਾਵਾਂ ਡੋਲ ਹਾਲਤ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਦਸੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਦੌੜਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਕੀੜਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਪਚਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
bikh kaa keerhaa bikh meh raataa bikh hee maahi pachaavani-aa. ||4||
Like a poisonous worm, the mind remains imbued with the poisonous love of worldly wealth, and rots away in that poison itself.
ਇਹ ਮਨ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਦਾ ਕੀੜਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਵਿਸ਼ਟੇ ਦਾ ਕੀੜਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਟੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ), ਮਨ ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਇਸ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰੇ ਤੈ ਆਪੁ ਜਣਾਏ ॥
ha-o ha-o karay tai aap janaa-ay.
Practicing egotism and selfishness, he tries to impress others by showing off.
(ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡਾ ਜ਼ਾਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥
baho karam karai kichh thaa-ay na paa-ay.
He perform all sorts of rituals, but rituals are not accepted in God’s court.
ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਮਿੱਥੇ ਹੋਏ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕੰਮ ਭੀ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਉਸਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਕੰਮ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਕਬੂਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
tujh tay baahar kichhoo na hovai bakhsay sabad suhaavani-aa. ||5||
O’ God, nothing happens outside Your Will. When God bestows grace, only then one’s life is adorned through the Guru’s word.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ (ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਉਪਜੈ ਪਚੈ ਹਰਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
upjai pachai har boojhai naahee.
One who doesn’t realize God, is spiritually dead (born and dies again and again).
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ, ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਦੇ ਸੜਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਤਾਂ ਸੁਖ ਦਾ ਸਾਹ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਦੇ ਹਾਹੁਕੇ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਫਿਰਾਹੀ ॥
an-din doojai bhaa-ay firaa-ee.
They always wander in love with duality.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਹੀ) ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਇਆ ਹੈ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਇਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
manmukh janam ga-i-aa hai birthaa ant ga-i-aa pachhutaavani-aa. ||6||
The lives of the self-willed person goes to waste; in the end, he leaves the world, regretting and repenting.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਖ਼ਰ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਤੋਂ) ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦਾ ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਪਿਰੁ ਪਰਦੇਸਿ ਸਿਗਾਰੁ ਬਣਾਏ ॥ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੁ ਐਸੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਏ ॥
pir pardays sigaar banaa-ay. manmukh anDh aisay karam kamaa-ay.
Like a young bride who decorates herself while her groom has gone abroad, the self-conceited person blinded in the love of Maya does foolish deeds.
(ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ) ਪਤੀ ਪਰਦੇਸ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਵੇ ਤੇ ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਦਾ) ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਰਹੇ, ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਭੀ) ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਲਤਿ ਨ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਲਤਿ ਨ ਢੋਈ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
halat na sobhaa palat na dho-ee birthaa janam gavaavni-aa. ||7||
Such a person neither receives honor in this world, nor refuge in God’s court, and thus wastes the human birth.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ (ਭੀ) ਸੋਭਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ, ਤੇ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ। ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਿਨੈ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
har kaa naam kinai virlai jaataa.
Only a very rare person has realized God’s Name.
ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਈ ਹੈ।
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
pooray gur kai sabad pachhaataa.
It is only through Guru’s word that any person has realized God.
(ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਪੂਰੇ ਗਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥
an-din bhagat karay din raatee sehjay hee sukh paavni-aa. ||8||
Night and day, he performs God’s devotional worship; and intuitively obtains peace.
ਉਹ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ॥
sabh meh vartai ayko so-ee.
The same One (God) is pervading in all.
ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
gurmukh virlaa boojhai ko-ee.
Only a rare Guru’s follower recognize this.
(ਪਰ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ) ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਜਨ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੯॥੨੯॥੩੦॥
naanak naam ratay jan soheh kar kirpaa aap milaavani-aa. ||9||29||30||
O’ Nanak, those who are attuned to the Naam are beautiful. Granting His Grace, God unites them with Himself.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
