ਬੇਦੁ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਕਰਮੀ ਪਲੈ ਹੋਇ ॥
bayd vapaaree gi-aan raas karmee palai ho-ay.
The Veda acts like a trader (by talking about vices and virtues and hell and heaven); but divine knowledge is the real wealth, received only by God’s grace.
(ਸੋ, ਪਾਪ ਤੇ ਪੁੰਨ ਦੇ ਫਲ ਦੱਸ ਕੇ) ਵੇਦ ਤਾਂ ਵਪਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ; (ਪਰ ਅਸਲ) ਰਾਸਿ-ਪੂੰਜੀ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ) ਗਿਆਨ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਗਿਆਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ|
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਸੀ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਲਦਿ ਨ ਚਲਿਆ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥
naanak raasee baahraa lad na chali-aa ko-ay. ||2||
O’ Nanak, without acquiring the true wealth of Divine knowledge, no one departs from here with real profit. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ( ਗਿਆਨ-ਰੂਪ) ਪੂੰਜੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਜਗਤ ਤੋਂ) ਨਫ਼ਾ ਖੱਟ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ॥੨॥

ਨਿੰਮੁ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਬਹੁ ਸੰਚੀਐ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
nimm birakh baho sanchee-ai amrit ras paa-i-aa.
(A Neem tree remains bitter) even if we profusely irrigate with nectar-like sweet water,
ਜੇ) ਨਿੰਮ (ਦੇ) ਰੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ-ਰਸ ਪਾ ਕੇ (ਭੀ) ਬਹੁਤ ਸਿੰਜੀਏ (ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਨਿੰਮ ਦੀ ਕੁੜਿੱਤਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ);
ਬਿਸੀਅਰੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਿ ਵਿਸਾਹੀਐ ਬਹੁ ਦੂਧੁ ਪੀਆਇਆ ॥
bisee-ar mantar visaahee-ai baho dooDh pee-aa-i-aa.
(a snake does not give up its habit of stinging) even if we give it lot of milk and hypnotize it with a snake mantra,
ਜੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁੱਧ ਪਿਆਲ ਕੇ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸੱਪ ਨੂੰ ਇਤਬਾਰੀ ਬਣਾਈਏ (ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਉਹ ਡੰਗ ਮਾਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਦਾ);
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਅਭਿੰਨੁ ਨ ਭਿਜਈ ਪਥਰੁ ਨਾਵਾਇਆ ॥
manmukh abhinn na bhij-ee pathar navaa-i-aa.
and core of a stone does not get wet even if bathed in water, similarly the mind of a self-willed person never becomes compassionate.
(ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਪੱਥਰ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਾਈਏ (ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਕੋਰੇ ਦਾ ਕੋਰਾ, ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਭਿੱਜਦਾ l
ਬਿਖੁ ਮਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਿੰਚੀਐ ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
bikh meh amrit sinchee-ai bikh kaa fal paa-i-aa.
If we irrigate a poisonous tree with nectar, we still get poisonous fruit.
ਜੇ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਿੰਜੀਏ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਫਲ ਪਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਭ ਬਿਖੁ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੧੬॥
naanak sangat mayl har sabh bikh leh jaa-i-aa. ||16||
O’ Nanak! say, O’ God! unite me with the holy congregation so that all the poison of the love for Maya may vanish from my mind. ||16||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਤਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਲੋ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਾਲੀ) ਸਾਰੀ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਏ ॥੧੬॥
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Guru:
ਮਰਣਿ ਨ ਮੂਰਤੁ ਪੁਛਿਆ ਪੁਛੀ ਥਿਤਿ ਨ ਵਾਰੁ ॥
maran na moorat puchhi-aa puchhee thit na vaar.
Death has neither ever asked for an auspicious occasion, nor for the date or the day of the week before overtaking anybody.
ਮੌਤ ਨੇ (ਕਦੇ) ਮੁਹੂਰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ, ਕਦੇ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੁੱਛੀ ਕਿ ਅੱਜ ਕੇਹੜੀ ਥਿੱਤ ਹੈ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਵਾਰ ਹੈ।
ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਲਦਿਆ ਇਕਿ ਲਦਿ ਚਲੇ ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਬਧੇ ਭਾਰ ॥
iknHee ladi-aa ik lad chalay iknHee baDhay bhaar.
(Death is like a train on which) many have loaded their luggage, many loaded and departed from here, while many have packed their bags.
ਕਈਆਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਾਮਾਨ ਲੱਦ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਕਈ ਲੱਦ ਕੇ ਟੁਰ ਗਏ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਤੇ ਕਈ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੇ (ਸਾਮਾਨ ਦੇ) ਭਾਰ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਲਏ ਹਨ।
ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਈ ਸਾਖਤੀ ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਈ ਸਾਰ ॥
iknHaa ho-ee saakh-tee iknHaa ho-ee saar.
Many are ready to depart while many are taking care of their stuff.
ਕਈ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਿਆਰੀ ਹੋ ਪਈ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਕਈ ਜੀਵ ਸਮਾਨ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ l
ਲਸਕਰ ਸਣੈ ਦਮਾਮਿਆ ਛੁਟੇ ਬੰਕ ਦੁਆਰ ॥
laskar sanai damaami-aa chhutay bank du-aar.
Their magnificent mansions, armies and drums are left behind here.
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਘਰ ਫ਼ੌਜਾਂ ਤੇ ਧੌਂਸੇ ਇਥੇ ਹੀ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਢੇਰੀ ਛਾਰੁ ਕੀ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਈ ਛਾਰ ॥੧॥
naanak dhayree chhaar kee bhee fir ho-ee chhaar. ||1||
O’ Nanak, the human body which was created from a pile of dust, is reduced to dust again. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮਨੁਖ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਜੋ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਦੀ ਮੁੱਠ ਸੀ (ਜੋ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਣਿਆ ਸੀ) ਮੁੜ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਰਲਿਆ ॥੧॥

First Guru:
ਨਾਨਕ ਢੇਰੀ ਢਹਿ ਪਈ ਮਿਟੀ ਸੰਦਾ ਕੋਟੁ ॥
naanak dhayree dheh pa-ee mitee sandaa kot.
O’ Nanak, human body, a fortress of mud, at last fell apart like a heap of dust.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਦੀ ਵਲਗਣ ਸੀ, ਸੋ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਉਸਾਰੀ ਢਹਿ ਹੀ ਪਈ।
ਭੀਤਰਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਬਹਾਲਿਆ ਖੋਟੁ ਵੇ ਜੀਆ ਖੋਟੁ ॥੨॥
bheetar chor bahaali-aa khot vay jee-aa khot. ||2||
O’ my mind, (for the sake of this body), you commited sinful deeds and allowed the thief of evil-desires to remain sitting within you. ||2||
ਹੇ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਤੂੰ (ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਨਿਤ ਖੋਟ ਹੀ ਕਮਾਂਦੀ ਰਹੀ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਤੂੰ ਚੋਰ-ਮਨਸਾ ਨੂੰ ਬਿਠਾਈ ਰੱਖਿਆ ॥੨॥

Pauree:
ਜਿਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਦੁਸਟੁ ਹੈ ਨਕ ਵਢੇ ਨਕ ਵਢਾਇਆ ॥
jin andar nindaa dusat hai nak vadhay nak vaDhaa-i-aa.
Those in the habit of slandering others are shameless and earn no respect from others.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਭੈੜਾ ਸੁਭਾਅ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਨਕ ਵਢੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਿਤੇ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ |
ਮਹਾ ਕਰੂਪ ਦੁਖੀਏ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਲੇ ਮੁਹ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
mahaa karoop dukhee-ay sadaa kaalay muh maa-i-aa.
Because of their love and greed for Maya, they always look extremely ugly and miserable and disgraceful.
ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ) ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹ ਬੜੇ ਕੋਝੇ ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਭਰਿਸ਼ਟੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਾਲੇ ਜਾਪਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਭਲਕੇ ਉਠਿ ਨਿਤ ਪਰ ਦਰਬੁ ਹਿਰਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚੁਰਾਇਆ ॥
bhalkay uth nit par darab hireh har naam churaa-i-aa.
Those who upon rising early in the morning regularly steal wealth from others, they have also stolen from their mind the opportunity to remember God’s Name.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਨਿੱਤ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਉੱਠ ਕੇ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਧਨ ਚੁਰਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਤੋਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਚੁਰਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਤ ਕਰਹੁ ਰਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥
har jee-o tin kee sangat mat karahu rakh layho har raa-i-aa.
O’ dear God, bless us that we do not associate with such people; O’ God, the sovereign King, protect me from them.
ਹੇ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ! ਅਸਾਡੀ ਸਹੈਤਾ ਕਰੋ, ਅਸਾਨੂੰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਨਾਹ ਦਿਉ, ਹੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ! ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੋਲੋ ਬਚਾ ਲੈ|
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਇਐ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੭॥
naanak pa-i-ai kirat kamaavday manmukh dukh paa-i-aa. ||17||
O’ Nanak, the self-willed persons do sinful deeds according to their destiny based on their previous deeds, and thereby endure misery. ||17||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮਨ ਦੇ ਮਰੀਦ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ (ਨਿੰਦਾ ਦੀ) ਕਿਰਤ ਕਮਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੭॥
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੪ ॥

Shalok, Fourth Guru:
ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ਹੈ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਖਸਮਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਹੋਇ ॥
sabh ko-ee hai khasam kaa khasmahu sabh ko ho-ay.
Everyone belongs to the Master-God, and everyone emanates from Him;
ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੈ, ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
hukam pachhaanai khasam kaa taa sach paavai ko-ay.
When a person recognizes the eternal God’s will, he then realizes Him.
ਜਦੋਂ ਜੀਵ ਖਸਮ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਬੁਰਾ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
gurmukh aap pachhaanee-ai buraa na deesai ko-ay.
When we recognize our inner self by following the Guru’s teachings, then no one seems bad.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਜਦ ਆਪੇ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਕਰ ਲਈਏ ਤਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਭੈੜਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਹਿਲਾ ਆਇਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥
naanak gurmukh naam Dhi-aa-ee-ai sahilaa aa-i-aa so-ay. ||1||
O’ Nanak, the advent of that person into this world is a success who lovingly remembers Naam by following the Guru’s teachings. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਆਗਮਨ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਫਲ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ।॥੧॥

Fourth Guru:
ਸਭਨਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
sabhnaa daataa aap hai aapay maylanhaar.
God Himself is the benefactor of all and He Himself unites the beings with Him.
ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਰੋਜ਼ੀ ਆਦਿਕ) ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਤੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ) ਮਿਲਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜਹਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
naanak sabad milay na vichhurheh jinaa sayvi-aa har daataar. ||2||
O’ Nanak, those who have lovingly remembered the benefactor-God and remain connected with the Guru’s word, never get separated from Him. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ (ਸਾਰੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਵਿੱਛੁੜਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ ॥੨॥

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਹੈ ਨਾਉ ਉਗਵਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
gurmukh hirdai saaNt hai naa-o ugav aa-i-aa.
There is peace in the mind of the Guru’s followers, because God’s Name has welled up within them.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕੇ ਉਥੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਫੁਟ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ l
ਜਪ ਤਪ ਤੀਰਥ ਸੰਜਮ ਕਰੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
jap tap tirath sanjam karay mayray parabh bhaa-i-aa.
They are pleasing to my God as if they have performed devotional worship, penance, pilgrimage and self-discipline.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਜਪ ਕਰ ਲਏ ਹਨ, ਤਪ ਸਾਧ ਲਏ ਹਨ, ਤੀਰਥ ਨ੍ਹਾ ਲਏ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਸਾਧਨ ਕਰ ਲਏ ਹਨ।
ਹਿਰਦਾ ਸੁਧੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਦੇ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥
hirdaa suDh har sayvday soheh gun gaa-i-aa.
With purity in heart, they lovingly remember God and look elegant singing His praises.
ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਵਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥
mayray har jee-o ayvai bhaavdaa gurmukh taraa-i-aa.
This is what my dear God likes, and He ferries the Guru’s followers across the worldly ocean of vices..
ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਇਹੀ ਗੱਲ ਚੰਗੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਤਾਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੇਲਿਅਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਹਾਇਆ ॥੧੮॥
naanak gurmukh mayli-an har dar sohaa-i-aa. ||18||
O’ Nanak, God unites the Guru’s followers with Himself and they look elegant in God’s presence. ||18||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਲ ਲਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੮॥

Shalok, First Guru:
ਧਨਵੰਤਾ ਇਵ ਹੀ ਕਹੈ ਅਵਰੀ ਧਨ ਕਉ ਜਾਉ ॥
Dhanvantaa iv hee kahai avree Dhan ka-o jaa-o.
A wealthy person (always) says that I should go out to earn more wealth.
ਧਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਸਦਾ) ਇਉਂ ਹੀ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਹੋਰ ਧਨ ਕਮਾਣ ਲਈ ਜਾਵਾਂ।
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨਿਰਧਨੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਦਿਨਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਦਿਨਿ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥
naanak nirDhan tit din jit din visrai naa-o. ||1||
But Nanak would become poor on that day when he forgets Naam. ||1||
ਪਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਿਹਾੜੇ ਕੰਗਾਲ (ਹੋਵੇਗਾ) ਜਿਸ ਦਿਨ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਿੱਸਰੇਗਾ ॥੧॥

First Guru:
ਸੂਰਜੁ ਚੜੈ ਵਿਜੋਗਿ ਸਭਸੈ ਘਟੈ ਆਰਜਾ ॥
sooraj charhai vijog sabhsai ghatai aarjaa.
With the rising and setting of the Sun, (passage of every day,) everybody’s life is diminishing;
ਸੂਰਜ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਡੁੱਬਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਗੁਜ਼ਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਘਟ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ;
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਤਾ ਭੋਗਿ ਕੋਈ ਹਾਰੈ ਕੋ ਜਿਣੈ ॥
tan man rataa bhog ko-ee haarai ko jinai.
Human mind and body are engaged in the enjoyment of worldly life, some people lose and some win in the game of life.
ਜੀਵ ਦੀ ਦੇਹ ਅਤੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਰੰਗ-ਰਲੀਆ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਕੋਈ ਹਾਰ ਜਾਂਦਾਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਜਿੱਤ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਭਰਿਆ ਫੂਕਿ ਆਖਣਿ ਕਹਣਿ ਨ ਥੰਮ੍ਹ੍ਹੀਐ ॥
sabh ko bhari-aa fook aakhan kahan na thamH-ee-ai.
Everyone is puffed up with ego (because of Maya) and does not stop even after being advised to stop.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਆਫਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਸਮਝਾਇਆਂ ਆਕੜਨ ਤੋਂ ਰੁਕਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਵੇਖੈ ਆਪਿ ਫੂਕ ਕਢਾਏ ਢਹਿ ਪਵੈ ॥੨॥
naanak vaykhai aap fook kadhaa-ay dheh pavai. ||2||
O’ Nanak, God Himself is watching every one and when He takes out one’s breath, one falls down dead. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਵੇਖ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਸ ਮੁਕਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਢਹਿ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ | ॥੨॥

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਥਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
satsangat naam niDhaan hai jithahu har paa-i-aa.
The treasure of God’s Name is in the holy congregation, from where God is realized.
ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਥਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ;
