ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਜਨੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੭॥
har ras raataa jan parvaan. ||7||
he remains elated with the elixir of God’s Name and is approved in God’s presence. ||7|
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਕਬੂਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਇਤ ਉਤ ਦੇਖਉ ਸਹਜੇ ਰਾਵਉ ॥
it ut daykh-a-u sehjay raava-o.
I experience You pervading everywhere, intuitively remember You with love,
ਮੈਂ ਏਧਰ ਓਧਰ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹੀ (ਵਿਆਪਕ) ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਸੁਭਾਵਕ ਹੀ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਭਾਵਉ ॥
tujh bin thaakur kisai na bhaava-o.
and O’ my Master-God, except for You, I do not love anyone else.
ਅਤੇ ਹੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ! ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੋੜਦਾ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇਆ ॥
naanak ha-umai sabad jalaa-i-aa.
O’ Nanak, one who has burnt off his ego by following the Guru’s divine word,
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਾੜ ਲਈ ਹੈ,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਦਰਸੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥੮॥੩॥
satgur saachaa daras dikhaa-i-aa. ||8||3||
the true Guru caused him to experience the blessed vision of the eternal God. ||8||3||
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੩॥

Raag Basant, First Guru:
ਚੰਚਲੁ ਚੀਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਪਾਰਾ ॥
chanchal cheet na paavai paaraa.
The mind (engrossed in materialism) has become spiritually unstable and cannot find its way out of this instability (by its own efforts).
ਮਨ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ) ਚੰਚਲ ਹੋ ਚੁਕਿਆ ਹੈ, (ਆਪਣੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਨਾਲ) ਚੰਚਲਤਾ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਨਿਕਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ,
ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਬਾਰਾ ॥
aavat jaat na laagai baaraa.
It keeps wandering and does not take any time to jump from one thought to another.
(ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਰਤਾ ਭੀ ਚਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਰਤਾ ਭਰ ਭੀ ਟਿਕਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਦੂਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਮਰੀਐ ਕਰਤਾਰਾ ॥
dookh ghano maree-ai kartaaraa.
O’ God, because of this fickle mind, one endures immense suffering and becomes spiritually dead,
ਹੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ! ਇਸ ਦਾ ਸਿੱਟਾ ਇਹ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਾਰਨਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਕੋ ਕਰੈ ਨ ਸਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
bin pareetam ko karai na saaraa. ||1||
and except You, O’ beloved God, no one else can help out of this problem. ||1||
(ਇਸ ਬਿਪਤਾ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਧਿਰ ਮਦਦ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧॥
ਸਭ ਊਤਮ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖਉ ਹੀਨਾ ॥
sabh ootam kis aakha-o heenaa.
The entire mankind is noble; whom can I call unworthy?.
ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਚੰਗੀ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਨੀਵਾ ਕਹਾ?
ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਤੀਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har bhagtee sach naam pateenaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Because everyone becomes appeased by lovingly remembering God’s Name and engaging in His devotional worship. ||1||Pause||
ਕਿਉਕੇ ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਕੇ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਅਉਖਧ ਕਰਿ ਥਾਕੀ ਬਹੁਤੇਰੇ ॥
a-ukhaDh kar thaakee bahutayray.
I am exhausted after trying many different remedies (to cure the mercurial nature of my mind,
(ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਚਲਤਾ ਦੇ ਰੋਗ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਣ ਲਈ) ਮੈਂ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਦਵਾਈਆਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਉੱਦਮ) ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹਾਰ ਗਈ ਹਾਂ,
ਕਿਉ ਦੁਖੁ ਚੂਕੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੇਰੇ ॥
ki-o dukh chookai bin gur mayray.
but how can this disease (mind’s instability) be cured without my Guru?
ਪਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਬੀਮਾਰੀ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੱਟੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ?
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੂਖ ਘਣੇਰੇ ॥
bin har bhagtee dookh ghanayray.
Without the devotional worship of God, one suffers many sorrows.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਨ ਨੂੰ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਦੁੱਖ ਆ ਘੇਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਦਾਤੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਮੇਰੇ ॥੨॥
dukh sukh daatay thaakur mayray. ||2||
O’ my Master-God! You are the giver of all pains and pleasures.||2||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਰੋਗੁ ਵਡੋ ਕਿਉ ਬਾਂਧਉ ਧੀਰਾ ॥
rog vado ki-o baaNDha-o Dheeraa.
This disease (of instability of mind) is so deadly; how can I pacify myself ?
(ਚੰਚਲਤਾ ਦਾ ਇਹ) ਰੋਗ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਦੇ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ।
ਰੋਗੁ ਬੁਝੈ ਸੋ ਕਾਟੈ ਪੀਰਾ ॥
rog bujhai so kaatai peeraa.
One who can understand this disease, only he can remove its pain.
ਜੋ ਕੋਈ ਇਸ ਰੋਗ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹ ਹੀ ਪੀੜ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੈ ਅਵਗਣ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥
mai avgan man maahi sareeraa.
My mind and body are filled with faults and unvirtuous thoughts
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਔਗੁਣ ਹੀ ਔਗੁਣ ਹਨ।
ਢੂਢਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਬੀਰਾ ॥੩॥
dhoodhat khojat gur maylay beeraa. ||3||
O’ brother, after I searched for a long time, the Guru united me with God who eradicated all my afflictions. ||3||
ਹੈ ਭਰਾ! ਢੂੰਢਦਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੩॥
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਦਾਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥
gur kaa sabad daaroo har naa-o.
The Guru’s word and God’s Name is the cure for all the afflictions.
(ਚੰਚਲਤਾ ਦੇ ਰੋਗ ਦੀ) ਦਵਾਈ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਹੀ) ਹੈ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ) ਹੈ।
ਜਿਉ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤਿਵੈ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ji-o too raakhahi tivai rahaa-o.
O’ God, as You keep me, I live accordingly (I gladly accept Your will).
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੂੰ ਰੱਖੇਂ ਮੈਂ ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।
ਜਗੁ ਰੋਗੀ ਕਹ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਿਖਾਉ ॥
jag rogee kah daykh dikhaa-o.
The entire world is afflicted, so from whom can I seek advice?
ਜਗਤ (ਆਪ ਹੀ) ਰੋਗੀ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਰੋਗ ਦੱਸਾਂ?
ਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਮਾਇਲੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਉ ॥੪॥
har nirmaa-il nirmal naa-o. ||4||
God alone is immaculate and immaculate is His Name. ||4||
ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਘਰੁ ਜੋ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ॥
ghar meh ghar jo daykh dikhaavai.
One who, after experiencing God within his heart, shows Him to others,
ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਖਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਮਹਲੀ ਸੋ ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਵੈ ॥
gur mahlee so mahal bulaavai.
is the Guru, who while residing in God’s presence, calls others to His presence.
ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੇ ਮਹਲ ਦਾ ਵਾਸੀ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਸੱਦਦਾ ਹੈ
ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਚਿਤ ਮਹਿ ਚੀਤਾ ॥
man meh manoo-aa chit meh cheetaa.
The mind of the devotees stops wandering, and they remain focused on the mind itself,
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ (ਬਾਹਰ ਭਟਕਣੋਂ ਹਟ ਕੇ) ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਐਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਲੋਗ ਅਤੀਤਾ ॥੫॥
aisay har kay log ateetaa. ||5||
such devotees of God then become detached (from the love for Maya). ||5||
ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ) ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੫॥
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਤੇ ਰਹਹਿ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ॥
harakh sog tay raheh niraasaa.
They remain unaffected by the feelings of happiness or sorrow,
(ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ) ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਗ਼ਮੀ ਤੋਂ ਉਤਾਂਹ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਚਾਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ॥
amrit chaakh har naam nivaasaa.
and tasting the ambrosial nectar, they remain absorbed in God’s Name.
ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਚੱਖ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦਾ) ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗਾ ॥
aap pachhaan rahai liv laagaa.
By understanding his own self, one who remains attuned to God,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਖ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਨਮੁ ਜੀਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਗਾ ॥੬॥
janam jeet gurmat dukh bhaagaa. ||6||
His malady of mind’s instability vanishes through the Guru’s teaching and he wins the game of human life. ||6||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਜਿੱਤ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦਾ (ਚੰਚਲਤਾ ਵਾਲਾ) ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਸਚੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵਉ ॥
gur dee-aa sach amrit peeva-o.
I drink the ambrosial nectar of the eternal Naam which the Guru has given me.
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ (ਉਸ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ) ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ l
ਸਹਜਿ ਮਰਉ ਜੀਵਤ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਉ ॥
sahj mara-o jeevat hee jeeva-o.
In a state of spiritual poise, I have given up my self-conceit and now I spiritually rejuvenate while fulfilling my worldly responsibilities.
ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਾ ਭਾਵ ਵਲੋਂ ਮੂੰਹ ਮੋੜ ਚੁਕਾ ਹਾਂ, ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਕਾਰ-ਵਿਹਾਰ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਪਣੋ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
apno kar raakho gur bhaavai.
O’ God, with the Guru’s blessing, protect and keep me as Your own,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ (ਸੇਵਕ) ਬਣਾ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਰੱਖ,
ਤੁਮਰੋ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੭॥
tumro ho-ay so tujheh samaavai. ||7||
because one who becomes Yours merges in You.||7||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਤੇਰਾ (ਸੇਵਕ) ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਭੋਗੀ ਕਉ ਦੁਖੁ ਰੋਗ ਵਿਆਪੈ ॥
bhogee ka-o dukh rog vi-aapai.
One who remains involved in enjoying only the worldly pleasures, becomes afflicted with disease and sorrow.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੋਗਣ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਗਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਆ ਦਬਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਪੈ ॥
ghat ghat rav rahi-aa parabh jaapai.
But one who experiences God’s presence in each and every heart,
ਪਰ, ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਘਟ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਦਿੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਤੀਤਾ ॥
sukh dukh hee tay gur sabad ateetaa.
by focusing on the Guru’s divine word, he remains free from the feelings of pleasure and sorrow.
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੈ ਹਿਤ ਚੀਤਾ ॥੮॥੪॥
naanak raam ravai hit cheetaa. ||8||4||
O’ Nanak, he always remembers God with loving devotion.||8||4||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਚਿੱਤ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ (ਸਦਾ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੪॥
ਬਸੰਤੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਇਕ ਤੁਕੀਆ ॥

Basant, First Mehl, Ik-Tukee (one stanza):
ਮਤੁ ਭਸਮ ਅੰ ਧੂਲੇ ਗਰਬਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
mat bhasam anDhoolay garab jaahi.
O’ spiritually ignorant yogi, be careful lest you become arrogant that you are doing something great by smearing ashes on your body.
ਹੇ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਜੋਗੀ , ਪਿੰਡੇ ਤੇ ਸੁਆਹ ਮਲ ਕੇ ਮਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਜਾਏਂ (ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਬੜਾ ਹੀ ਉੱਤਮ ਕਰਮ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ)
ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਾਗੇ ਜੋਗੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
in biDh naagay jog naahi. ||1||
O naked Yogi, union with God cannot be attained by these rituals. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਗਨ ਜੋਗੀ ! ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ) ਮਿਲਾਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧॥
ਮੂੜ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਕਾਹੇ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਓ ਤੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ॥
moorhHay kaahay bisaari-o tai raam naam.
O’ fool, why have you forsaken God’s Name,
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਿਉਂ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਆਵੈ ਕਾਮ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ant kaal tayrai aavai kaam. ||1|| rahaa-o.
which would be of real use to you in the end?||1||pause||
ਇਸ ਨੇਹੀ ਅੰਤ ਸਮੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਆਉਣਾ ਹੈ? ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਗੁਰ ਪੂਛਿ ਤੁਮ ਕਰਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
gur poochh tum karahu beechaar.
Consult the Guru and reflect on his teachings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਸੋਚੋ ਸਮਝੋ (ਘਰ-ਘਾਟ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਭਟਕਿਆਂ ਰੱਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ)।
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਸਾਰਿਗਪਾਣਿ ॥੨॥
jah daykh-a-u tah saarigpaan. ||2||
Wherever I look, I experience God pervading there.||2||
ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਜਿੱਧਰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਉਧਰ ਹੀ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਕਿਆ ਹਉ ਆਖਾ ਜਾਂ ਕਛੂ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
ki-aa ha-o aakhaa jaaN kachhoo naahi.
O’ God, what can I say, when nothing belongs to me.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਕੀ ਆਖ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜਦ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੁਝ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ?,
ਜਾਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੩॥
jaat pat sabh tayrai naa-ay. ||3||
The social status, honor and everything lies in remembering Your Name.||3||
ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਨਾ ਹੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਹੈ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਨਾ ਹੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ-ਮਾਣ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਕਾਹੇ ਮਾਲੁ ਦਰਬੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਗਰਬਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
kaahay maal darab daykh garab jaahi.
Why do you take such pride in gazing upon your property and wealth?
ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਾਇਦਾਦ ਅਤੇ ਦੌਲਤ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਕਿਉਂ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਚਲਤੀ ਬਾਰ ਤੇਰੋ ਕਛੂ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੪॥
chaltee baar tayro kachhoo naahi. ||4||
At the time of your departure from this world, nothing will be yours.||4||
ਸੰਸਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਕੂਚ ਕਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ (ਧਨ ਮਾਲ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਚੀਜ਼ ਤੇਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ ॥੪॥
ਪੰਚ ਮਾਰਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਰਖਹੁ ਥਾਇ ॥
panch maar chit rakhahu thaa-ay.
Eradicate the five impulses (lust, anger, greed, attachment, and ego), and keep your mind under control.
ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖ।
ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਕੀ ਇਹੈ ਪਾਂਇ ॥੫॥
jog jugat kee ihai paaN-ay. ||5||
This is the foundation of the way to union with God. ||5||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਦੀ ਇਹੀ ਨੀਂਹ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਹਉਮੈ ਪੈਖੜੁ ਤੇਰੇ ਮਨੈ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
ha-umai paikharh tayray manai maahi.
Your mind is tied with the rope of egotism,
ਤੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਸੰਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਨਰੜਿਆਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਮੂੜੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੬॥
har na cheeteh moorhay mukat jaahi. ||6||
because of which, You do not remember God; O’ fool, liberation from vices can happen only by remembering God with adoration. ||6||
ਜਿਸ ਕਾਰਣ ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ; ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਮਤ ਹਰਿ ਵਿਸਰਿਐ ਜਮ ਵਸਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥ ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਮੂੜੇ ਚੋਟ ਖਾਹਿ ॥੭॥
mat har visri-ai jam vas paahi. ant kaal moorhay chot khaahi. ||7||
O’ fool, (be alert) lest you will fall into the clutches of the demon of death by forgetting God, and endure punishment in the end.||7||
(ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਸੁਚੇਤ ਹੋ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾਇਆਂ ਮਤਾਂ ਜਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਜਾਏਂ, ਤੇ ਅਖ਼ੀਰਲੇ ਸਮੇ (ਪਛਤਾਵੇ ਦੀ) ਮਾਰ-ਕੁੱਟ ਖਾਏਂ ॥੭॥
