ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ॥
satgur sayvee sabad suhaa-i-aa.
I serve that True Guru, whose teaching has embellished my life,
ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਸਰਾ-ਪਰਨਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੇਰਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੰਵਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥
jin har kaa naam man vasaa-i-aa.
and has enshrined God’s Name in my mind.
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਗਵਾਏ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
har nirmal ha-umai mail gavaa-ay dar sachai sobhaa paavni-aa. ||2||
God Himself is immaculate (therefore, whoever is attuned to Him), dispels the dirt of ego, and obtains honor at the court of the God.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ, ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਭਾ ਖੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
bin gur naam na paa-i-aa jaa-ay.
Without the Guru’s teaching, the Naam cannot be realized.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਸਰਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ।
ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਰਹੇ ਬਿਲਲਾਇ ॥
siDh saaDhik rahay billaa-ay.
The Siddhas and the spiritually skilled remained Wailing in their attempt to realize God’s Name without the Guru’s teaching.
ਜੋਗ-ਸਾਧਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੇ ਜੋਗ-ਸਾਧਨ ਵਿਚ ਪੁੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੋਗੀ ਤਰਲੇ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੀ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
bin gur sayvay sukh na hovee poorai bhaag gur paavni-aa. ||3||
Without serving and following Guru’s advice, peace cannot be obtained and only through perfect destiny Guru’s guidance is obtained.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, ਵੱਡੀ ਕਿਸਮਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਆਰਸੀ ਕੋਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵੇਖੈ ॥
ih man aarsee ko-ee gurmukh vaykhai.
Human mind is like a mirror, only a rare Guru’s followers look into his inner self through it.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਆਰਸੀ ਸਮਾਨ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਕੋਈ ਟਾਵਾਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਹੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵੇਖ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮੋਰਚਾ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਜਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਸੋਖੈ ॥
morchaa na laagai jaa ha-umai sokhai.
Rust of evil thought does not stick to mind when one eradicates ego from within.
ਜਦੋਂ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੁਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ (ਫਿਰ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਜੰਗਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ
ਅਨਹਤ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਏ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
anhat banee nirmal sabad vajaa-ay gur sabdee sach samaavani-aa. ||4||
When one keeps ringing the immaculate divine word continuously in the mind, then by following the Guru’s word one merges in the eternal God
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ-ਰਸ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਕਰੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਹੁ ਨ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
bin satgur kihu na daykhi-aa jaa-ay.
No one can judge one’s spiritual life without the True Guru’s teaching.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਭੀ (ਆਪਣਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ) ਵੇਖਿਆ-ਪਰਖਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਗੁਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਆਪੁ ਦਿਤਾ ਦਿਖਾਇ ॥
gur kirpaa kar aap ditaa dikhaa-ay.
The Guru has mercifully shown me my inner self.
(ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਖਾਇਆ ਹੈ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਹੀ) ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਉਸਦਾ) ਆਪਣਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਖਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
aapay aap aap mil rahi-aa sehjay sahj samaavani-aa. ||5||
The person who sees his inner-self realizes that God Himself has become one with His creatures and that person intuitively merges in a state of equipoise.
ਫਿਰ ਉਸ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਨਿਸਚਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪੇ ਦੀ ਵੇਖ-ਪਰਖ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਇਕਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
gurmukh hovai so ikas si-o liv laa-ay.
A person who is Guru’s follower attunes the mind only to the One (God)
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੂਜਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
doojaa bharam gur sabad jalaa-ay.
He burns away duality and doubt by the Guru’s word.
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰੇ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
kaa-i-aa andar vanaj karay vaapaaraa naam niDhaan sach paavni-aa. ||6||
Controlling his wandering mind, he meditates on God’s Name and obtains the everlasting wealth of Naam.
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਹਰ ਭਟਕਣੋਂ ਰੋਕ ਕੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਵਣਜ ਵਪਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
gurmukh karnee har keerat saar.
For a Guru’s follower, the essence of all the deeds is God’s praise.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਕਰਨ-ਜੋਗ ਕੰਮ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਉੱਦਮ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਏ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥
gurmukh paa-ay mokh du-aar.
The Guru’s follower finds liberation from the vices.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਉਹ (ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਦਾ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ਾ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤਾ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
an-din rang rataa gun gaavai andar mahal bulaavani-aa. ||7||
Always imbued with God’s Love, he keeps singing God’s praises, and thus God calls him to His Presence.
ਉਹ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਬੁਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ)
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
satgur daataa milai milaa-i-aa.
Only the true Guru bestows the gift of Naam. One meets the Guru only by God’s will.
ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ (ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ, ਨਾਮ ਦੀ) ਦਾਤ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ) ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਦੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ) ਮਿਲਾਏ।
ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਨਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥
poorai bhaag man sabad vasaa-i-aa.
Only through perfect destiny, the divine word is enshrined in one’s mind.
ਪੂਰੀ ਕਿਸਮਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹਰਿ ਸਚੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੯॥੧੦॥
naanak naam milai vadi-aa-ee har sachay kay gun gaavani-aa. ||8||9||10||
O’ Nanak, only the one who sings the praises of the eternal God obtains the glory of Naam.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸੱਚੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਲਾਘਾ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Raag Maajh, by the Third Guru:
ਆਪੁ ਵੰਞਾਏ ਤਾ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
aap vanjaa-ay taa sabh kichh paa-ay.
The one who loses his self-conceit, obtains everything (all the merits of higher spiritual state).
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉੱਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਗੁਣ ਗ੍ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਚੀ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
gur sabdee sachee liv laa-ay.
Through Guru’s Word, one is imbued with the True Love of God.
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਲਗਨ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚੁ ਵਣੰਜਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਸੰਘਰਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ਕਰਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
sach vanaNjahi sach sanghrahi sach vaapaar karaavani-aa. ||1||
He recites God’s Name, gathers the wealth of Naam and meditates on God’s Name,
ਸੱਚ ਉਹ ਵਿਹਾਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੱਚ ਹੀ ਇਕੱਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਚਾਈ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਸੁਦਾਗਰੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥
ha-o vaaree jee-o vaaree har gun an-din gaavani-aa.
I dedicate myself to those, who always sing the praises of God.
ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜੇਹੜੇ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਹਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ha-o tayraa tooN thaakur mayraa sabad vadi-aa-ee dayvani-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ God, I am Your servant, You are my Master. You are the giver of glory through the Guru’s word.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈਂ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਹਾਂ, (ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ) ਵਡਿਆਈ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈਂ
ਵੇਲਾ ਵਖਤ ਸਭਿ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ॥
vaylaa vakhat sabh suhaa-i-aa.
That time and moment is totally auspicious.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਵਕਤ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਜਿਤੁ ਸਚਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
jit sachaa mayray man bhaa-i-aa.
When the True One (God) becomes pleasing to my mind.
ਜਿਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਜਿਸ ਵਕਤ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗੇ।
ਸਚੇ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਸਚੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
sachay sayvi-ai sach vadi-aa-ee gur kirpaa tay sach paavni-aa. ||2||
By meditating on the eternal God, true honor is obtained. By Guru’s Grace, the True One is realized.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲਿਆਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (-ਰੂਪ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਭਾਉ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤੁਠੈ ਪਾਏ ॥
bhaa-o bhojan satgur tuthai paa-ay.
If the true Guru becomes gracious, then one receives the divine love as the food for the spiritual growth.
ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ, ਤਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਅਨ ਰਸੁ ਚੂਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
an ras chookai har ras man vasaa-ay.
The one who enshrines the love God’s Name in his mind, his quest for pleasures from the worldly materials ends.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਚਸਕਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
sach santokh sahj sukh banee pooray gur tay paavni-aa. ||3||
He realizes God’s Name through the divine word of the Perfect Guru, and enjoys contentment and intuitive peace.
ਉਹ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੰਤੋਖ ਅਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਨ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਧ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥
satgur na sayveh moorakh anDh gavaaraa.
The ignorant fools, blinded by Maya, do not follow the True Guru’s teachings.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਮੂਰਖ ਗੰਵਾਰ ਬੰਦੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ-ਪਰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈਂਦੇ.
ਫਿਰਿ ਓਇ ਕਿਥਹੁ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥
fir o-ay kithhu paa-in mokh du-aaraa.
How can they find the way to liberate themselves from the vices?
ਉਹ ਫਿਰ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਥਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦੇ।
ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
mar mar jameh fir fir aavahi jam dar chotaa khaavani-aa. ||4||
They die spiritual death over and over again. They remain in the cycle of birth and death and are tormented by the fear of death.
ਉਹ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਕੇ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਸੱਟਾਂ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਸਬਦੈ ਸਾਦੁ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਤਾ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ॥
sabdai saad jaaneh taa aap pachhaaneh.
When some fortunate people realize the essence of the divine word, and recognize their own selves.
ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ (ਵਡ-ਭਾਗੀ ਬੰਦੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਜਾਣ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ॥
nirmal banee sabad vakaaneh.
Then through the Guru’s Immaculate word, they keep reciting God’s praises.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਉਚਾਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਚੇ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
sachay sayv sadaa sukh paa-in na-o niDh naam man vasaavani-aa. ||5||
In this way, by meditating on God’s Name they always live in peace and enshrine Naam in their mind, as if it is the world’s nine treasures.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਇਉਂ) ਵਸਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ) ਨੌ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ (ਹੈ)
ਸੋ ਥਾਨੁ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
so thaan suhaa-i-aa jo har man bhaa-i-aa.
Beautiful becomes that place (heart), which is pleasing to God’s mind.
ਉਹ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਥਾਂ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਬਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥
satsangat bahi har gun gaa-i-aa.
And only that person’s heart becomes beautiful who has recited the praises of God in the holy congregation.
(ਤੇ ਉਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਥਾਂ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਏ ਹਨ।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਲਾਹਹਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਦੁ ਵਜਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
an-din har saalaahahi saachaa nirmal naad vajaavani-aa. ||6||
Every day, they praise God and keep reciting the immaculate divine word in their mind.
ਅਜੇਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਵਾਜਾ ਵਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥
