ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਪਿਓ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
gurmukh japi-o har kaa naa-o.
and lovingly remembered God’s Name by following the Guru’s teachings,
ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ,
ਬਿਸਰੀ ਚਿੰਤ ਨਾਮਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥
bisree chint naam rang laagaa.
his anxiety vanished, and he got imbued with the love of God’s Name,
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਗਈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ,
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕਾ ਸੋਇਆ ਜਾਗਾ ॥੧॥
janam janam kaa so-i-aa jaagaa. ||1||
and woke up from the slumber of spiritual ignorance of countless births. ||1||
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਵਿਚ ਸੁੱਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੁਣ ਉਹ ਜਾਗ ਪਿਆ ॥੧॥
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਅਪਨੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਏ ॥
kar kirpaa apnee sayvaa laa-ay.
Bestowing mercy, whom God engages to His devotional worship,
ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਆਪਣੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saaDhoo sang sarab sukh paa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
he enjoys all comforts and spiritual bliss in the company of saints.||1||pause||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਰੋਗ ਦੋਖ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥
rog dokh gur sabad nivaaray.
One who has eradicated all the maladies and sorrows, through the Guru’s word,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਰੋਗ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲਏ,
ਨਾਮ ਅਉਖਧੁ ਮਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਸਾਰੇ ॥
naam a-ukhaDh man bheetar saaray.
has enshrined Naam, the cure for all afflictions, in his mind,
ਨਾਮ-ਦਾਰੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਂਭ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟਤ ਮਨਿ ਭਇਆ ਅਨੰਦ ॥
gur bhaytat man bha-i-aa anand.
spiritual bliss wells up in his mind by meeting and following Guru’s teachings,
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਿਆਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਣ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਰਬ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਨਾਮ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥੨॥
sarab niDhaan naam bhagvant. ||2||
and he feels that all the treasures are in (remembering) God’s Name. ||2||
ਸਾਰੇ ਖਜਾਨੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਕੀ ਮਿਟੀ ਜਮ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ॥
janam maran kee mitee jam taraas.
(That person whom God has engaged in devotional worship), his dread of birth and death and the fear of the demon of death has been dispelled.
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਿਆ ਹੈ), ਉਸ ਦੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਦਾ ਸਹਿਮ ਜਮ-ਰਾਜ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਮਿਟ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਊਂਧ ਕਮਲ ਬਿਗਾਸ ॥
saaDhsangat ooNDh kamal bigaas.
In the company of saints, his heart which was like an inverted lotus because of the love for Maya, has blossomed in spiritual bliss.
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦਾ (ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਲ) ਉਲਟਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਿਰਦਾ-ਕਮਲ ਖਿੜ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਤ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ॥
gun gaavat nihchal bisraam.
By singing praises of God, he has attained a spiritual state which remains stable against the onslaught of Maya,
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਿਆਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਮਿਲ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਹੱਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਟਾਕਰੇ ਤੇ ਅਡੋਲ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਏ ਸਗਲੇ ਕਾਮ ॥੩॥
pooran ho-ay saglay kaam. ||3||
and all his tasks are accomplished.||3||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਸਿਰੇ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਗਏ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਦੁਲਭ ਦੇਹ ਆਈ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥
dulabh dayh aa-ee parvaan.
(That person whom God has engaged in devotional worship), his body which is so difficult to obtain, is approved,
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਦੁਰਲੱਭ ਸਰੀਰ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਕਬੂਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਫਲ ਹੋਈ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
safal ho-ee jap har har naam.
and it becomes fruitful by meditating on God’s Name.
(ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕਾਇਆ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੀ ॥
kaho naanak parabh kirpaa karee.
Nanak says, God has bestowed mercy on me,
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ (ਮੇਰੇ ਉੱਤੇ) ਮਿਹਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਸਿ ਜਪਉ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੀ ॥੪॥੨੯॥੪੨॥
saas giraas japa-o har haree. ||4||29||42||
and with every breath and morsel, I lovingly remember God. ||4||29||42||
ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਾਹ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹਰੇਕ ਗਿਰਾਹੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੪॥੨੯॥੪੨॥

Raag Bhairao, Fifth Guru:
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚਾ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
sabh tay oochaa jaa kaa naa-o.
O’ brother God, whose glory is the highest of all,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮਣਾ ਸਭ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥
sadaa sadaa taa kay gun gaa-o.
you should always sing His Praises.
ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ਕਰ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਸਗਲਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
jis simrat saglaa dukh jaa-ay.
God, remembering whom all one’s misery goes away,
ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਸਾਰਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਰਬ ਸੂਖ ਵਸਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੧॥
sarab sookh vaseh man aa-ay. ||1||
and all comforts and inner peace come to dwell in the mind. ||1||
ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾ) ॥੧॥
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਮਨਾ ਤੂ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥
simar manaa too saachaa so-ay.
O’ my mind, always lovingly remember the eternal God,
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਕਰ।
ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
halat palat tumree gat ho-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
so that you may attain high spiritual state both here and hereafter. ||1||pause||
(ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਪੁਰਖ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰ ॥
purakh niranjan sirjanhaar.
God, who pervades everywhere, who is immaculate and the creator of all,
ਜੋ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਕਾਲਖ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ,
ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਦੇਵੈ ਆਹਾਰ ॥
jee-a jant dayvai aahaar.
He provides sustenance to all creatures and beings.
ਉਹ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖਾਣ ਲਈ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕੋਟਿ ਖਤੇ ਖਿਨ ਬਖਸਨਹਾਰ ॥
kot khatay khin bakhsanhaar.
He is capable of forgiving millions of sins in an instant.
ਉਹ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਪਾਪ ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ,
ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਸਤਾਰ ॥੨॥
bhagat bhaa-ay sadaa nistaar. ||2||
He always ferries those across the worldly ocean of vices who lovingly engage in His devotional worship.||2||
ਉਹ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਸਾਚਾ ਧਨੁ ਸਾਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
saachaa Dhan saachee vadi-aa-ee.
Only that person receives the true wealth of Naam and eternal glory,
ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਸੋਭਾ (ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ),
ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
gur pooray tay nihchal mat paa-ee.
who has received unwavering intellect from the perfect Guru.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਅਡੋਲ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮੱਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਈ।
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰਾ ॥
kar kirpaa jis raakhanhaaraa.
Upon whom the savior God bestows mercy (and blesses the gift of Naam),
ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ)
ਤਾ ਕਾ ਸਗਲ ਮਿਟੈ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥੩॥
taa kaa sagal mitai anDhi-aaraa. ||3||
all the darkness of spiritual ignorance is dispelled from within that person. ||3||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਗੋ ਧਿਆਨ ॥
paarbarahm si-o laago Dhi-aan.
One whose attention is focused on the supreme God,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਪੂਰਨ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਨਿਰਬਾਨ ॥
pooran poor rahi-o nirbaan.
he visualizes the desire-free God fully pervading everywhere.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਸਨਾ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਭ ਥਾਈਂ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਭ੍ਰਮ ਭਉ ਮੇਟਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਗੁਰ ਭਏ ਦਇਆਲ ॥੪॥੩੦॥੪੩॥
bharam bha-o mayt milay gopaal. naanak ka-o gur bha-ay da-i-aal. ||4||30||43||
O’ Nanak, on whom the Guru becomes kind, eradicating doubt and fear, he meets the Master-God of the universe. ||4||30||43||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਰੇਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਡਰ ਮਿਟਾ ਕੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ ਪਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ॥੪॥੩੦॥੪੩॥

Raag Bhairao, Fifth Guru:
ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਇ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥
jis simrat man ho-ay pargaas.
God, remembering whom the mind gets divinely enlightened,
ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਿਆਂ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਮਿਟਹਿ ਕਲੇਸ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥
miteh kalays sukh sahj nivaas.
sufferings are eradicated, and one comes to dwell in spiritual peace and poise,
ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸੁਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਉ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦੇਇ ॥
tiseh paraapat jis parabh day-ay.
but only that person receives the gift of remembering God whom He gives,
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ) ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪਾਏ ਸੇਵ ॥੧॥
pooray gur kee paa-ay sayv. ||1||
and he alone receives the chance to follow the perfect Guru’s teachings. ||1||
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਭੀ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੋ ਨਾਉ ॥
sarab sukhaa parabh tayro naa-o.
O’ God! Your Name is the source of all comforts and peace.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਹੈ।
ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਗਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aath pahar mayray man gaa-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ my mind, sing God’s praises at all times.||1||pause||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਅੱਠੇ ਪਹਰ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ਕਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜੋ ਇਛੈ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
jo ichhai so-ee fal paa-ay. har kaa naam man vasaa-ay.
One who enshrines God’s Name in his mind, receives the fruit of his desires.
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਫਲ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣ ਰਹੇ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇ ॥ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
aavan jaan rahay har Dhi-aa-ay. bhagat bhaa-ay parabh kee liv laa-ay. ||2||
One’s cycle of birth and death ends by lovingly remembering God and remaining focused on God with loving devotion. ||2||
ਭਗਤੀ-ਭਾਵ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਬਿਨਸੇ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ॥
binsay kaam kroDh ahaNkaar.
That person’s lust, anger, and ego are destroyed,
(ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ (ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ) ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਤੂਟੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰ ॥
tootay maa-i-aa moh pi-aar.
his love and attachment for Maya is snapped,
(ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਤਣਾਵਾਂ ਟੁੱਟ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ,
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ਰਹੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥
parabh kee tayk rahai din raat.
and he always depends on God’s support.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਆਸਰੇ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਦਾਤਿ ॥੩॥
paarbarahm karay jis daat. ||3||
upon whom God bestows the gift of Naam ||3||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨਹਾਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥
karan karaavanhaar su-aamee.
O’ Master-God, capable of doing and getting everything done:
ਹੇ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਨ ਜੋਗ ਅਤੇ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਾਵਣ ਦੇ ਸਮਰਥ ਸੁਆਮੀ
ਸਗਲ ਘਟਾ ਕੇ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
sagal ghataa kay antarjaamee.
O’ the omniscient God!
ਹੇ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲੇ!
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਅਪਨੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਇ ॥
kar kirpaa apnee sayvaa laa-ay.
bestow mercy and attach me to Your devotional worship,
ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਆਪਣੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥੪॥੩੧॥੪੪॥
naanak daas tayree sarnaa-ay. ||4||31||44||
I, Your devotee Nanak, have sought Your refuge. ||4||31||44||

ਲਾਜ ਮਰੈ ਜੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਲੇਵੈ ॥
laaj marai jo naam na layvai.
One who does not remember God, feels so disgraced as if he is dead.
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਰਮ ਨਾਲ ਹੌਲਾ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਨ ਸੁਖੀ ਕਿਉ ਸੋਵੈ ॥
naam bihoon sukhee ki-o sovai.
How can a person, devoid of Naam, sleep in peace?
ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁਖ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੌ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਛਾਡਿ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਚਾਹੈ ॥
har simran chhaad param gat chaahai.
One hopes to achieve the supreme spiritual state without remembering God,
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ (ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨੀ) ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
