ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਜੀਅ ਉਪਾਏ ॥
lakh cha-oraaseeh jee-a upaa-ay.
God has created living beings in millions of species.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਚੌਰਾਸੀ ਲੱਖ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਜੀਵ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ,
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
jis no nadar karay tis guroo milaa-ay.
But only the one on whom He showers His grace is united with the Guru.
ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ ਉੱਤੇ ਉਹ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਕਾਟਿ ਸਦਾ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
kilbikh kaat sadaa jan nirmal dar sachai naam suhaavani-aa. ||6||
All their sins are then washed off, and through the eternal Name of God they are made pure and beautiful.
(ਗੁਰੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੇ ਹੋਏ) ਬੰਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਾਪ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਸਦਾ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ-ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ
ਲੇਖਾ ਮਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਕਿਨਿ ਦੀਐ ॥
laykhaa maagai taa kin dee-ai.
When God asks for an account of one’s deeds, who can give a satisfactory answer?
ਜਦ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਿਸਾਬ-ਕਿਤਾਬ ਮੰਗਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਹਿਸਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇ ਸਕਦਾ, ਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੂਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਤਰ ਸਕਦਾ l
ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਫੁਨਿ ਦੂਐ ਤੀਐ ॥
sukh naahee fun doo-ai tee-ai.
Therefore, there is never any peace in counting our vices and virtues.
(ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ) ਲੇਖਾ ਗਿਣਾਇਆਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਖ਼ਰੂ ਹੋਣ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਤੇ) ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
aapay bakhas la-ay parabh saachaa aapay bakhas milaavani-aa. ||7||
It is only when God Himself forgives us that He unites us with Himself, through His own grace.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ॥
aap karay tai aap karaa-ay.
He Himself does, and He Himself causes all to be done.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਸਭ ਕੁਝ) ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਜੀਵਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
pooray gur kai sabad milaa-ay.
Through the the Word of the Guru, He unites us with Himself
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੨॥੩॥
naanak naam milai vadi-aa-ee aapay mayl milaavani-aa. ||8||2||3||
O’ Nanak, through the Naam, glory is obtained. He Himself unites in His Union.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ!ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਆਦਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮਾਲਕ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਿਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Raag Maajh, by the Third Guru:
ਇਕੋ ਆਪਿ ਫਿਰੈ ਪਰਛੰਨਾ ॥
iko aap firai parchhannaa.
By Himself, God pervades, hidden and unseen (throughout the universe)
(ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ-ਮਾਨ ਜਗਤ-ਰੂਪ ਪਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਢੱਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪ (ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਵਿਚਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵੇਖਾ ਤਾ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਭਿੰਨਾ ॥
gurmukh vaykhaa taa ih man bhinnaa.
By Guru’s grace, when some have seen His vision, their heart is filled with the joy of His love.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਗੁਪਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ) ਜਦੋਂ ਵੇਖ ਲਿਆ ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰਸ ਵਿਚ) ਭਿੱਜ ਗਿਆ।
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਤਜਿ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਏਕੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
tarisnaa taj sahj sukh paa-i-aa ayko man vasaavani-aa. ||1||
Renouncing desire they have obtained the bliss of equipoise, and enshrined God in their mind.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸ ਪਿਆ
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਇਕਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥
ha-o vaaree jee-o vaaree ikas si-o chit laavani-aa.
I am totally dedicated to those who attune their mind to God alone.
ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਹਾਂ, ਜੇਹੜੇ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਮਨੁ ਇਕਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ਸਚੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰੰਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmatee man ikat ghar aa-i-aa sachai rang rangaavin-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Through Guru’s teachings, their mind returns to its home (stopped wandering and became stable), and becomes imbued with the love of the eternal God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਖਿਆ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਗਿਆ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਗਏ l
ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਭੂਲਾ ਤੈਂ ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ॥
ih jag bhoolaa taiN aap bhulaa-i-aa.
O’ God, this world has gone astray. You, Yourself, have strayed it.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈl ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਇਕੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਲੋਭਾਇਆ ॥
ik visaar doojai lobhaa-i-aa.
Forgetting the One, it has become engrossed in duality.
ਤੈਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭੂਲਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
an-din sadaa firai bharam bhoolaa bin naavai dukh paavni-aa. ||2||
Deluded by doubt it always wanders around. Without Naam, it suffers in sorrow.
ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਜਗਤ ਸਦਾ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਜੋ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਕਰਮ ਬਿਧਾਤੇ ॥
jo rang raatay karam biDhaatay.
Those who are imbued with the Love of God, the Architect of Destiny,
ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਜਾਤੇ ॥
gur sayvaa tay jug chaaray jaatay.
become renowned forever by serving (following) the Guru.
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਦੇਇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
jis no aap day-ay vadi-aa-ee har kai naam samaavani-aa. ||3||
The one on who God Himself bestows this honor, is absorbed in God’s Name.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮੁਨੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਚੇਤੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
maa-i-aa mohi ha
The person who is in love with Maya, does not remember God.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਖਦਾ,
ਜਮਪੁਰਿ ਬਧਾ ਦੁਖ ਸਹਾਹੀ ॥
jampur baDhaa dukh sahaahee.
In the fear of death he remains miserable.
ਉਹ ਜਮ ਦੀ ਨਗਰੀ ਵਿਚ (ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿਚ) ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਨਾ ਬੋਲਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪਾਪਿ ਪਚਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
annaa bolaa kichh nadar na aavai manmukh paap pachaavani-aa. ||4||
Being spiritually blind and dumb, the self-conceited person cannot see anything but Maya, and is therefore consumed by his own sins.
ਮਨਾਖਾ ਤੇ ਡੋਰਾ ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕੂਲ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਹੈ, ਊਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਦਿਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਤੇ ਊਹ ਗੁਨਾਹ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਗਲ ਸੜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਕਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
ik rang raatay jo tuDh aap liv laa-ay.
O’ God those whom you have attached to Naam are imbued in your love.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਲਗਨ ਲਾਈ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਤੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਏ ॥
bhaa-ay bhagat tayrai man bhaa-ay.
Through loving devotional worship, they become pleasing to Your Mind.
(ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ (ਤੇਰੀ) ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸਭ ਇਛਾ ਆਪਿ ਪੁਜਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
satgur sayvan sadaa sukh-daata sabh ichhaa aap pujaavani-aa. ||5||
O’ the Giver of all peace, through the Guru, they serve You. You Yourself fulfill all their desires.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸਦਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਹਰੇਕ ਇੱਛਾ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ l
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਦਾ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
har jee-o tayree sadaa sarnaa-ee.
O’ God, I always seek Your Sanctuary.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਆਸਰਾ ਤੱਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿਹਿ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
aapay bakhsihi day vadi-aa-ee.
You Yourself forgive the mortals, and bless them with honor.
ਤੂੰ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
jamkaal tis nayrh na aavai jo har har naam Dhi-aavani-aa. ||6||
Not even the demon of death comes near a person who always lovingly meditates on God’s Name.)
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਉਸਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕ ਸਕਦੀ l
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੇ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਏ ॥
an-din raatay jo har bhaa-ay.
They who are pleasing to God, always remain imbued in His love
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ (ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮੇਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
mayrai parabh maylay mayl milaa-ay.
My God unites them with Himself.
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਸਚੁ ਬੁਝਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
sadaa sadaa sachay tayree sarnaa-ee tooN aapay sach bujhaavani-aa. ||7||
O’ my God, I always seek Your shelter, and it is You Yourself who makes mortals realize the Truth.
ਹੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਲਈ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਨਾਹ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਹਾਂ। ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੱਚ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਜਿਨ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਤਾ ਸੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਣੇ ॥
jin sach jaataa say sach samaanay.
They who have realized the Truth become absorbed in the eternal One.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਈ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੀ ਯਾਦ) ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਵਖਾਣੇ ॥
har gun gaavahi sach vakhaanay.
They always utter truth and sing God’s praises
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰ ਉਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ ਉਸਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੩॥੪॥
naanak naam ratay bairaagee nij ghar taarhee laavani-aa. ||8||3||4||
O’ Nanak, those who are imbued with (God’s) Naam become detached from Maya and attune themselves to their inner-self.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਉਪਰਾਮ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ (ਬਾਹਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਭਟਕਣ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ) ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨl
ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Raag Maajh, by the Third Guru:
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਸੁ ਮੁਆ ਜਾਪੈ ॥
sabad marai so mu-aa jaapai.
The one who eradicates ego by following the Guru’s word is, unaffected by worldly desires as if he is dead.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ (ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਵਲੋਂ) ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਵਲੋਂ) ਮਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਆਦਰ-ਮਾਣ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਚਾਪੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਸੰਤਾਪੈ ॥
kaal na chaapai dukh na santaapai.
Neither can death scare, nor sorrows afflict him.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੁਚਲਦੀ, ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਦੁਖੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੋਤੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
jotee vich mil jot samaanee sun man sach samaavani-aa. ||1||
By listening to the Guru’s word, he remains absorbed in the eternal God and his soul merges in the Supreme soul.
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਸਮਾਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਅੰਦਰ ਅਭੇਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਇ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥
ha-o vaaree jee-o vaaree har kai naa-ay sobhaa paavni-aa.
I am a sacrifice time and again to those, who obtain honor by contemplating God’s Name.
ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜੋ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਸੋਭਾ ਖੱਟਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਚਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
satgur sayv sach chit laa-i-aa gurmatee sahj samaavani-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
By serving the Guru, they attune their mind to the eternal One, and by acting on the Guru’s teachings, merge in a state of divine peace and poise.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਕਾਇਆ ਕਚੀ ਕਚਾ ਚੀਰੁ ਹੰਢਾਏ ॥
kaa-i-aa kachee kachaa cheer handhaa-ay.
This body is frail and weak, and the soul continues wearing it like a flimsy garment.
ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹੈ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਜਿਹਾ ਕੱਪੜਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਇਸ) ਜਰਜਰੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਹਢਾਂਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਜਿੰਦ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਭੋਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੀ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥
doojai laagee mahal na paa-ay.
Attached to duality, the soul does not achieve union with God.
(ਜਿੰਦ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੀ।
