ਗਿਆਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਉਪਿਓਨੁ ਇਸੁ ਸਉਦੇ ਲਾਇਕ ॥
gi-aan raas naam Dhan sa-opi-on is sa-uday laa-ik.
God has blessed me with the commodity of divine knowledge and the wealth of Naam, and has made me worthy of trading this commodity .
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਦੀ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਸੌਂਪ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸੌਦਾ ਵਿਹਾਝਣ ਦੇ ਲਾਇਕ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਝੀ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਲਿ ਬਹਾਲਿਆ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇਕ ॥
saajhee gur naal bahaali-aa sarab sukh paa-ik.
He has made me a partner with the Guru (in spreading God’s Name), and all comforts are under my control, as if these are my servants.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਭਾਈਵਾਲ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, (ਹੁਣ) ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਮੇਰੇ ਦਾਸ ਬਣ ਗਏ ਹਨ।
ਮੈ ਨਾਲਹੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜੈ ਹਰਿ ਪਿਤਾ ਸਭਨਾ ਗਲਾ ਲਾਇਕ ॥੨੧॥
mai naalahu kaday na vichhurhai har pitaa sabhnaa galaa laa-ik. ||21||
God, my Father, who is capable of doing everything, never gets separated from me. ||21||
ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਤਾ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵਿਛੁੜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਹੈ ॥੨੧॥

Shalok, Dakhanay, Fifth Guru:
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਚੜਿਆ ਸਿਉ ਤੋੜਿ ਢੂਢਿ ਸਜਣ ਸੰਤ ਪਕਿਆ ॥
naanak kachrhi-aa si-o torh dhoodh sajan sant paki-aa.
O’ Nanak, break relations with the false transitory worldly friends and search out those saints whose love would be everlasting.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਤੋੜ ਲੈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕੱਚੀ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ, ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਕਰ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਪੱਕੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਓਇ ਜੀਵੰਦੇ ਵਿਛੁੜਹਿ ਓਇ ਮੁਇਆ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ਛੋੜਿ ॥੧॥
o-ay jeevanday vichhurheh o-ay mu-i-aa na jaahee chhorh. ||1||
The worldly friends would desert even when one is still alive, but the saintly friends do not abandon, even when one is dead. ||1||
ਸੁਆਰਥੀ ਤਾਂ ਜੀਊਂਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਸਾਥ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸਤਸੰਗੀ ਮਰਨ ਤੇ ਭੀ ਸਾਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਦੇ ॥੧॥

Fifth Guru:
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਜੁਲੀਆ ਚਮਕੰਨਿ ਘੁਰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਘਟਾ ਅਤਿ ਕਾਲੀਆ ॥
naanak bijulee-aa chamkann ghurniH ghataa at kaalee-aa.
O’ Nanak, (in rainy season) when lightning flashes, dark clouds thunder,
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਸਾਵਣ ਦੀ ਰੁੱਤੇ ਜਦੋ) ਬੱਦਲਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੂੜ੍ਹੀਆਂ ਕਾਲੀਆਂ ਘਟਾਵਾਂ ਗੱਜਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਬਿਜਲੀਆਂ ਚਮਕਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ,
ਬਰਸਨਿ ਮੇਘ ਅਪਾਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਗਮਿ ਪਿਰੀ ਸੁਹੰਦੀਆ ॥੨॥
barsan maygh apaar naanak sangam piree suhandee-aa. ||2||
and rain may pour down relentlessly; O’ Nanak, such weather looks pleasing only to that bride who is with her husband.
ਤੇ ਬੱਦਲ ਮੁਹਲੇ-ਧਾਰ ਵਰ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ (ਤਦੋਂ ਕੈਸਾ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਾ ਸਮਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ); ਪਰ ਇਹ ਕਾਲੀਆਂ ਘਟਾਵਾਂ (ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ) ਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸੋਹਣੀਆਂ ਲੱਗਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ॥੨॥

Fifth Guru:
ਜਲ ਥਲ ਨੀਰਿ ਭਰੇ ਸੀਤਲ ਪਵਣ ਝੁਲਾਰਦੇ ॥
jal thal neer bharay seetal pavan jhulaarday.
Even when the ponds and the lands are full with water, cold wind is blowing,
(ਜੇਠ ਹਾੜ ਦੀਆਂ ਲੋਆਂ ਪਿਛੋਂ ਵਰਖਾ ਰੁੱਤੇ) ਟੋਏ-ਟਿੱਬੇ (ਮੀਂਹ ਦੇ) ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਣ, ਠੰਢੀਆਂ ਹਵਾਵਾਂ ਵਗਦੀਆਂ ਹੋਣ,
ਸੇਜੜੀਆ ਸੋਇੰਨ ਹੀਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਜੜੰਦੀਆ ॥
sayjrhee-aa so-inn heeray laal jarhandee-aa.
the bed is adorned with gold, diamonds and rubies,
ਸੋਨੇ ਦਾ ਪਲੰਘ ਹੋਵੇ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਹੀਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਜੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਣ,
ਸੁਭਰ ਕਪੜ ਭੋਗ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਿਰੀ ਵਿਹੂਣੀ ਤਤੀਆ ॥੩॥
subhar kaparh bhog naanak piree vihoonee tatee-aa. ||3||
beautiful dresses and delicacies are available; O Nanak, if the bride is separated from her husband, then all these pleasures cause her agony. ||3||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਸੁਲੱਖਣੇ ਬਸਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਆਮਤਾਂ ਹੋਣ ਤਾਂ ਵੀ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਦੇ ਬਗ਼ੈਰ, ਪਤਨੀ ਸੜਦੀ ਬਲਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੩॥

Pauree:
ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕਰਤੈ ਜੋ ਕੀਆ ਸੋਈ ਹੈ ਕਰਣਾ ॥
kaaran kartai jo kee-aa so-ee hai karnaa.
Whatever circumstances the Creator has created, He is going to do that very thing.
ਜੋ ਸਬੱਬ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਬਣਨਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੇ ਸਉ ਧਾਵਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀਆ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਹਣਾ ॥
jay sa-o Dhaaveh paraanee-aa paavahi Dhur lahnaa.
O’ mortal, even if you run in hundreds of directions (make innumerable efforts), you shall still receive what you are predestined to receive.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਸੈਂਕੜੇ ਵਾਰੀ ਦੌੜਦਾ ਫਿਰੇਂ, ਜੋ ਧੁਰੋਂ (ਤੇਰੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਲਹਣਾ (ਲਿਖਿਆ) ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰੇਂਗਾ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਲਭਈ ਜੇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਸਭ ਧਰਣਾ ॥
bin karmaa kichhoo na labh-ee jay fireh sabh Dharnaa.
Without God’s grace, you would not receive anything, even if you keep roaming around the entire earth.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ ਭਾਂਵੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਉਤੇ ਭੀ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰੇਂ ।
ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਉ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਕਾ ਭੈ ਡਰੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਕਰਣਾ ॥
gur mil bha-o govind kaa bhai dar door karnaa.
One who has enshrined the revered fear of God in his heart by meeting with the Guru, God has removed his dread of worldly fears.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਡਰ (ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਇਆ ਹੈ), ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦੁਨੀਆਵੀ ਡਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਹਿਮ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਭੈ ਤੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਖੋਜਤ ਫਿਰਣਾ ॥
bhai tay bairaag oopjai har khojat firnaa.
Through the revered fear of God, the attitude of detachment from the world wells up, and one sets out in search for God.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਵੈਰਾਗ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਖੋਜ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਸਹਜੁ ਉਪਜਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਨ ਮਰਣਾ ॥
khojat khojat sahj upji-aa fir janam na marnaa.
By searching for Him steadfastly, spiritual stability wells up in the mind and one does not fall in the cycle of birth and death.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਖੋਜ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਿਆਇ ਕਮਾਇ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਾਧ ਸਰਣਾ ॥
hi-aa-ay kamaa-ay Dhi-aa-i-aa paa-i-aa saaDh sarnaa.
One who attained the Guru’s refuge, he lovingly remembered God in his heart and earned the wealth of Naam.
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕੀਤੀ।
ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਉ ਗੁਰੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਚੜਾਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਤਰਣਾ ॥੨੨॥
bohith naanak day-o gur jis har charhaa-ay tis bha-ojal tarnaa. ||22||
Guru Nanak Dev is like a spiritual ship, whom God helped to board it (attached to his teachings), he crossed over the world-ocean of vices.||22||
ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਹੈ, ਹਰੀ ਨੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਵਿਚ ਬਿਠਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤਰ ਲਿਆ ॥੨੨॥

ਪਹਿਲਾ ਮਰਣੁ ਕਬੂਲਿ ਜੀਵਣ ਕੀ ਛਡਿ ਆਸ ॥
pahilaa maran kabool jeevan kee chhad aas.
(Message from God) O’ mortal, first accept to eradicate your ego and give up longing for worldly desires,
(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਲੋਂ ਸੁਨੇਹਾ) ਹੇ ਬੰਦੇ!) ਪਹਿਲਾਂ (ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਦਾ) ਤਿਆਗ ਪਰਵਾਨ ਕਰੇਂ, ਤੇ (ਸੁਆਰਥ-ਭਰੀ) ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਛੱਡ,
ਹੋਹੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਕੀ ਰੇਣੁਕਾ ਤਉ ਆਉ ਹਮਾਰੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੧॥
hohu sabhnaa kee raynukaa ta-o aa-o hamaarai paas. ||1||
become humble like the dust of the feet of all, only then come to Me. ||1||
ਜੇ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਹੋ ਜਾਏਂ, ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਆ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੧॥

Fifth Guru:
ਮੁਆ ਜੀਵੰਦਾ ਪੇਖੁ ਜੀਵੰਦੇ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਨਿ ॥
mu-aa jeevandaa paykh jeevanday mar jaan.
Consider him truly alive, who has eradicated his ego and love for worldly desires; consider them spiritually dead who are alive engrossed in love for worldly desires
ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ ਉਸੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਊਂਦਾ ਸਮਝੋ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਕ ਵਾਸਨਾ ਮਿਟਾ ਲਈਆਂ ਹਨ। ਜੇਹੜੇ ਨਿਰੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਮੁਹਬਤਿ ਇਕ ਸਿਉ ਤੇ ਮਾਣਸ ਪਰਧਾਨ ॥੨॥
jinHaa muhabat ik si-o tay maanas parDhaan. ||2||
Only those humans are called supreme who are in love with God. ||2||
ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸ਼ਿਰੋਮਣੀ (ਕਹੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ), ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਇੱਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

Fifth Mehl:
ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਪੀਰ ॥
jis man vasai paarbarahm nikat na aavai peer.
No pain or sorrow comes near that person, in whose mind is enshrined the supreme God.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਸਦਾ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਦੁੱਖ-ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਢੁਕਦਾ,
ਭੁਖ ਤਿਖ ਤਿਸੁ ਨ ਵਿਆਪਈ ਜਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਆਵੈ ਨੀਰ ॥੩॥
bhukh tikh tis na vi-aapa-ee jam nahee aavai neer. ||3||
Hunger and thirst (the yearning) for the worldly things do not affect him, even the demon of death does not come near him. ||3||
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭੁੱਖ-ਤ੍ਰੇਹ ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਦਬਾਉ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੀ, ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ (ਭੀ) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ॥੩॥

ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈਐ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਹ ਅਡੋਲੈ ॥
keemat kahan na jaa-ee-ai sach saah adolai.
O’ my eternal and unwavering God, Your worth cannot be stated.
ਹੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਡੋਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸ਼ਾਹ! ਤੇਰਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਧਿਆਨੀਆ ਕਉਣੁ ਤੁਧੁਨੋ ਤੋਲੈ ॥
siDh saaDhik gi-aanee Dhi-aanee-aa ka-un tuDhuno tolai.
Who amongst the sages, adepts, scholars, and the contemplators can evaluate You?
ਜੋਗ-ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪੁਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੋਗੀ, ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ, ਗਿਆਨ-ਚਰਚਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੇ ਸਮਾਧੀਆਂ ਲਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ-ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਤੇਰਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਪਾ ਸਕੇ?
ਭੰਨਣ ਘੜਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਹੈ ਓਪਤਿ ਸਭ ਪਰਲੈ ॥
bhannan gharhan samrath hai opat sabh parlai.
God is capable of breaking, making, creating and destroying all.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਨੂੰ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਤੇ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਹੈ, (ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੀ) ਉਤਪੱਤੀ ਭੀ ਉਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਾਸ ਭੀ ਉਹੀ।
ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਹੈ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸਭ ਬੋਲੈ ॥
karan kaaran samrath hai ghat ghat sabh bolai.
God is all-powerful to create the universe; He speaks through each and every being.
ਜਗਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਹੀ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਰਿਜਕੁ ਸਮਾਹੇ ਸਭਸੈ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਣਸੁ ਡੋਲੈ ॥
rijak samaahay sabhsai ki-aa maanas dolai.
God provides sustenance to all, why do mortals worry about it?
ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਰਿਜ਼ਕ ਅਪੜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੀ ਘਾਬਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗਹਿਰ ਗਭੀਰੁ ਅਥਾਹੁ ਤੂ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨ ਅਮੋਲੈ ॥
gahir gabheer athaahu too gun gi-aan amolai.
O’ God! You are deep, profound and unfathomable; Your virtues and spiritual wisdom is priceless.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਡੂੰਘਾ ਹੈਂ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇਰੀ ਹਾਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦੀ। ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ, ਤੇਰੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਸੋਈ ਕੰਮੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਕੀਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਉਲੈ ॥
so-ee kamm kamaavanaa kee-aa Dhur ma-ulai.
One does only that thing, which God has pre-ordained for him.
ਜੀਵ ਉਹੀ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਧੁਰੋਂ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਮਿਥ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ
ਤੁਧਹੁ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਣ ਬੋਲੈ ॥੨੩॥੧॥੨॥
tuDhhu baahar kichh nahee naanak gun bolai. ||23||1||2||
O’ God! nothing happens in the universe without Your will; Nanak sings Your praises. ||23||1||2||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੈਥੋਂ ਆਕੀ ਹੋ ਕੇ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਰਤ ਰਿਹਾ। ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨੩॥੧॥੨॥
ਰਾਗੁ ਮਾਰੂ ਬਾਣੀ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀਉ ਕੀ

One eternal God, realized by the grace of the True Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪਡੀਆ ਕਵਨ ਕੁਮਤਿ ਤੁਮ ਲਾਗੇ ॥
padee-aa kavan kumat tum laagay.
O’ pundit, what evil intellect are you attached to?
ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ! ਤੁਸੀਂ ਲੋਕ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਕੁਮੱਤੇ ਲੱਗੇ ਪਏ ਹੋ?
ਬੂਡਹੁਗੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਸਕਲ ਸਿਉ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪਹੁ ਅਭਾਗੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bood-hugay parvaar sakal si-o raam na japahu abhaagay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ the unfortunate pundit, you do not meditate on God, therefore, you along with your family would drown in the world-ocean of vices. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਮੰਦ-ਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਂਡੇ! ਤੁਸੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ, ਸਾਰੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਸਮੇਤ ਹੀ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ) ਡੁੱਬ ਜਾਉਗੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਪੜੇ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਗੁਨੁ ਖਰ ਚੰਦਨ ਜਸ ਭਾਰਾ ॥
bayd puraan parhay kaa ki-aa gun khar chandan jas bhaaraa.
What is the use of ritualistic reading of Vedas and Puranas? It is just like loading sandalwood on a donkey who does not care for its fragrance.
ਵੇਦਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਚਣ ਦਾ ਕੀ ਲਾਭ ਹੈ? ਇਹ ਇਕ ਗਧੇ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਨਣ ਨਾਲ ਲੱਦਣ ਦੀ ਮਾਨੰਦ ਹੈ।
