ਹਰਿ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥
har cheeteh tin balihaarai jaa-o.
I am dedicated to those who lovingly remember God,
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਤਿਨ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਉ ॥
gur kai sabad tin mayl milaa-o.
and through the Gurus word, I unite with them in their congregation.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਧੂਰਿ ਲਾਈ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਬਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥
tin kee Dhoor laa-ee mukh mastak satsangat bahi gun gaa-idaa. ||2||
Those who sing God’s praises in the holy congregation, I serve them with such humility, as if I apply the dust of their feet on my face and forehead. ||2||
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨ ਧੂੜ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਉਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੨॥
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਜੇ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵਾ ॥
har kay gun gaavaa jay har parabh bhaavaa.
I can sing God’s praises, only if I become pleasing to Him.
ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਗਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਾਂ ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਾ ॥
antar har naam sabad suhaavaa.
If God’s Name manifests in my heart, then my life is adorned through the Guru’s divine word.
ਜੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵੱਸ ਪਏ, ਤਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਰਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਚਹੁ ਕੁੰਡੀ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥
gurbaanee chahu kundee sunee-ai saachai naam samaa-idaa. ||3||
One who follows the Guru’s divine word becomes renown throughout the world; by remembering God’s Name with adoration, one merges in Him. ||3||
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਜਿ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਭਾਲੇ ॥
so jan saachaa je antar bhaalay.
One who looks into his own self, becomes righteous (stable against vices)
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਪੜਤਾਲਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਅਡੋਲ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੇ ॥
gur kai sabad har nadar nihaalay.
God bestows mercy upon the one who focuses on the Guru’s word.
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਏ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਨਦਰੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥
gi-aan anjan paa-ay gur sabdee nadree nadar milaa-idaa. ||4||
One who applies the ointment of spiritual wisdom to the eyes through the Guru’s word; bestowing grace, the gracious God unites that person with Himself. ||4||
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਦਾ ਸੁਰਮਾ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਿਹਰ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ (ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਵਡੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਇਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
vadai bhaag ih sareer paa-i-aa.
By great good fortune, I received this gift of human body;
ਪਰਮ ਚੰਗੇ ਨਸੀਬਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਦੇਹ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ,
ਮਾਣਸ ਜਨਮਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
maanas janam sabad chit laa-i-aa.
and in this human life, I have focused my mind on the Guru’s divine word.
ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਸਭੁ ਅੰਧ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਸਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥
bin sabdai sabh anDh anDhayraa gurmukh kiseh bujhaa-idaa. ||5||
God makes a rare follower of the Guru to understand that without the Guru’s word there is pitch darkness of spiritual ignorance in the journey of life. ||5||
ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਇਕਿ ਕਿਤੁ ਆਏ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
ik kit aa-ay janam gavaa-ay.
Why did many people come to this world, just to waste their human life?
ਕਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਜਹਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਕਿਉਂ ਆਏ ਹਨ?
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਲਾਗੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਏ ॥
manmukh laagay doojai bhaa-ay.
The self-willed people remained attached to the love of materialism.
ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਲੱਗੇ ਰਹੇ।
ਏਹ ਵੇਲਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਪਗਿ ਖਿਸਿਐ ਪਛੁਤਾਇਦਾ ॥੬॥
ayh vaylaa fir haath na aavai pag khisi-ai pachhutaa-idaa. ||6||
This opportunity of human life shall not come again and after wasting it in vices, one regrets when their foot slips towards death (death is imminent). ||6||
ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਾਲਾ ਇਹ ਸਮਾ ਫਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ) ਮੌਤ ਆਉਣ ਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥
gur kai sabad pavitar sareeraa.
The body which remains immaculate (free of vices) through the Guru’s word,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਸਰੀਰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰਾ ॥
tis vich vasai sach gunee gaheeraa.
God, the unfathomable ocean of virtues manifestes in that body.
ਉਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਾਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਵੱਡੇ ਜਿਗਰੇ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਵੇਖੈ ਸਭ ਥਾਈ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥
sacho sach vaykhai sabh thaa-ee sach sun man vasaa-idaa. ||7||
Then that person experiences the eternal God pervading everywhere, he listens His eternal Name and enshrines within his mind. ||7||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਫਿਰ) ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਹਉਮੈ ਗਣਤ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥
ha-umai ganat gur sabad nivaaray.
One can eradicate his egoistic calculations about his worldly possessions and ritualistic deeds only through the Guru’s divine word;
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀਆਂ ਗਿਣਤੀਆਂ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਹੀ) ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਖਹੁ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
har jee-o hirdai rakhahu ur Dhaaray.
therefore, keep the reverend God enshrined in your heart.
(ਤਾਂ ਤੇ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖੋ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਲਾਹੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥
gur kai sabad sadaa saalaahay mil saachay sukh paa-idaa. ||8||
One who always praises the eternal God through the Guru’s word, realizes Him and enjoys inner peace. ||8||
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਸੋ ਚੇਤੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਚੇਤਾਏ ॥
so chaytay jis aap chaytaa-ay.
He alone remembers God, whom God Himself inspires to remember Him,
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਹੀ) ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਏ ॥
gur kai sabad vasai man aa-ay.
and God becomes manifest in his mind through the Guru’s divine word.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ਆਪੇ ਬੂਝੈ ਆਪੈ ਆਪੁ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੯॥
aapay vaykhai aapay boojhai aapai aap samaa-idaa. ||9||
God sees and understands all the deeds done by everyone; (being pervading in all), in reality, God merges into Himself when He unites one with Himself. ||9||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹਰੇਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ (ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ) ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪੇ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥
ਜਿਨਿ ਮਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਥੁ ਪਾਈ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
jin man vich vath paa-ee so-ee jaanai.
One who has realized God’s Name within his mind, knows its worth,
ਜਿਸ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਪਦਾਰਥ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ, ਉਹ ਹੀ (ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
gur kai sabday aap pachhaanai.
and he evaluates and understands himself through the Guru’s word.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥
aap pachhaanai so-ee jan nirmal banee sabad sunaa-idaa. ||10||
Immaculate is the one who understands himself (his spiritual life), and preaches the divine word of God’s praises to others. ||10||
ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ) ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੦॥
ਏਹ ਕਾਇਆ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਹੈ ਸਰੀਰੁ ॥
ayh kaa-i-aa pavit hai sareer.
This body of that person is immaculate (free of vices);
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ ਕੇ) ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਚੇਤੈ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰੁ ॥
gur sabdee chaytai gunee gaheer.
who lovingly remembers God, the ocean of virtues, through the Gurus word.
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਡੂੰਘੇ ਜਿਗਰੇ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੧॥
an-din gun gaavai rang raataa gun kahi gunee samaa-idaa. ||11||
Imbued with God’s love, that person always sings God’s praises and he merges with God by reciting His virtues. ||11||
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ॥੧੧॥
ਏਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਸਭ ਮੂਲੁ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
ayhu sareer sabh mool hai maa-i-aa.
This body is the source of the love for materialism for that person,
ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਹੈ,
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ॥
doojai bhaa-ay bharam bhulaa-i-aa.
who is entangled in love for duality (materialism), and is strayed by doubt.
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਨ ਚੇਤੈ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਚੇਤੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੨॥
har na chaytai sadaa dukh paa-ay bin har chaytay dukh paa-idaa. ||12||
One who does not remember God, always endures suffering; yes, one who does not remember God, remains miserable for sure. ||12||
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਹ ਪੱਕੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੨॥
ਜਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
je satgur sayvay so parvaan.
One who follows the true Guru’s teachings is approved in God’s presence.
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਕਬੂਲ ਹੂੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਾਇਆ ਹੰਸੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
kaa-i-aa hans nirmal dar sachai jaan.
His body becomes free of vices, his soul remains immaculate and is recognized (honored) in God’s presence.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਜਾਣੂ-ਪਛਾਣੂ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਸਤਕਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵੇ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ਸੋਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥
har sayvay har man vasaa-ay sohai har gun gaa-idaa. ||13||
He lovingly remembers God, enshrines Him in his mind and lives a righteous life by singing His praises. ||13||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਭਾਗਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
bin bhaagaa gur sayvi-aa na jaa-ay.
Without good destiny, no one can follow the Guru’s teachings.
ਕਿਸਮਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭੂਲੇ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਲਲਾਇ ॥
manmukh bhoolay mu-ay billaa-ay.
The self-willed people remain astray from the righteous path of life, they endure misery and spiritually deteriorate.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਬੜੇ ਦੁੱਖੀ ਹੋ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜੀ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਗੁਰ ਕੇਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥
jin ka-o nadar hovai gur kayree har jee-o aap milaa-idaa. ||14||
The reverend God unites those with Himself who are blessed by the Guru’s gracious glance. ||14||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪਣੇ (ਚਰਨਾਂ) ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੪॥
ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟੁ ਪਕੇ ਹਟਨਾਲੇ ॥
kaa-i-aa kot pakay hatnaalay.
The sensory organs become very strong against the vices in the fortress like body of that person,
(ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ) ਸਰੀਰ (ਇਕ ਐਸਾ) ਕਿਲ੍ਹਾ (ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ) ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਦੇ) ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ (ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਤੇ) ਅਡੋਲ (ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ) ਹਨ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲੇਵੈ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥
gurmukh layvai vasat samaalay.
who follows the Guru’s teachings and enshrines the wealth of Naam within.
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਨਾਮ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਸਾਂਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਊਤਮ ਪਦਵੀ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੫॥
har kaa naam Dhi-aa-ay din raatee ootam padvee paa-idaa. ||15||
And he attains the supreme spiritual status by always remembering God’s Name with loving devotion. ||15||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਦਰਜਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੫॥
ਆਪੇ ਸਚਾ ਹੈ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥
aapay sachaa hai sukh-daata.
The eternal God Himself is the giver of inner peace,
ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਸਾਰੇ) ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ,
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
pooray gur kai sabad pachhaataa.
and He can be realized only through the perfect Guru’s divine word.
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਈ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਕੋ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥੭॥੨੧॥
naanak naam salaahay saachaa poorai bhaag ko paa-idaa. ||16||7||21||
O’ Nanak, by perfect destiny, only a rare person receives the gift of singing the praises of the eternal God. ||16||7||21||.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪੂਰੀ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਨਾਲ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਹ ਦਾਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੬॥੭॥੨੧॥
