ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਸੁਧਿ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥
maa-i-aa mohi suDh na kaa-ee.
and has no awareness of this mistake because of his love for materialism.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਰਤਾ ਭਰ ਭੀ (ਇਸ ਗ਼ਲਤੀ ਦੀ) ਸੂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੇ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੀ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
manmukh anDhay kichhoo na soojhai gurmat naam pargaasee hay. ||14||
The spiritually ignorant, self-willed person does not think anything except Maya; God’s Name enlightens the one who follows the Guru’s teachings. ||14||
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਾਰੇ) ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁੱਝਦਾ। ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਚਮਕ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੪॥
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੂਤੇ ॥
manmukh ha-umai maa-i-aa sootay.
The self-willed persons remain unaware of the righteous living because of their egotism and love for materialism,
ਮਨ ਦੇ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ (ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ) ਗ਼ਾਫ਼ਿਲ ਹੋਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਅਪਣਾ ਘਰੁ ਨ ਸਮਾਲਹਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਵਿਗੂਤੇ ॥
apnaa ghar na samaaleh ant vigootay.
they do not protect themselves from the onslaught of Maya and are ruined in the end.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਵੱਲੋਂ) ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹੱਲਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ-ਘਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਚਾਂਦੇ, ਆਖ਼ਿਰ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਜਾਲੈ ਦੁਖੇ ਦੁਖਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
par nindaa karahi baho chintaa jaalai dukhay dukh nivaasee hay. ||15||
They slander others, burn in extreme anxiety and remain enduring sorrow after sorrow. ||15||
ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਦੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾੜਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੫॥
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤੈ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਈ ॥
aapay kartai kaar karaa-ee.
The Creator Himself gets all (good or bad) deeds done from His creatures.
(ਪਰ, ਮਨਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੀ ਕੀਹ ਵੱਸ?) ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ (ਇਹ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਦੀ) ਕਾਰ ਸਦਾ ਕਰਾਈ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
aapay gurmukh day-ay bujhaa-ee.
God Himself gives understanding about the righteous living through the Guru.
ਕਰਤਾਰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ (ਸਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ) ਸਮਝ ਬਖ਼ਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਮੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੫॥
naanak naam ratay man nirmal naamay naam nivaasee hay. ||16||5||
O’ Nanak, those who are focused on Naam, their mind becomes immaculate and they always remain absorbed in God’ Name.||16||5||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੬॥੫॥

Raag Maaroo, Third Guru:
ਏਕੋ ਸੇਵੀ ਸਦਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ॥
ayko sayvee sadaa thir saachaa.
I only perform devotional worship of the one and only one eternal God.
ਮੈਂ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜੋ ਇਕੋ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗਾ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਕਾਚਾ ॥
doojai laagaa sabh jag kaachaa.
Attached to duality, almost the entire world is spiritually vulnerable.
ਦਵੈਤ ਭਾਵਨਾ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਸਾਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਹੀ ਸਾਚਿ ਪਤੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
gurmatee sadaa sach saalaahee saachay hee saach pateejai hay. ||1||
Following the Guru’s teachings, I always praise the eternal God and my mind has complete faith in Him. ||1||
ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਪਤੀਜ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਮੈ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
tayray gun bahutay mai ayk na jaataa.
O’ God, so many are Your favors on me, but I have not understood even one.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਗੁਣ (ਉਪਕਾਰ) ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਇੱਕ ਉਪਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਿਆ (ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਈ)।
ਆਪੇ ਲਾਇ ਲਏ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ॥
aapay laa-ay la-ay jagjeevan daataa.
God, the life of the world and the benefactor to all, attaches one to Himself.
ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
aapay bakhsay day vadi-aa-ee gurmat ih man bheejai hay. ||2||
One upon whom God bestows mercy, blesses him with the glory of Naam and through the Guru’s teachings that person’s mind gets imbued with His love. ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਹਰੀ ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਭਿੱਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਮਾਇਆ ਲਹਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ॥
maa-i-aa lahar sabad nivaaree.
Through the Guru’s divine word, one who has subdued the waves of materialism arising in his mind,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਲਹਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲਈ ਹੈ,
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੀ ॥
ih man nirmal ha-umai maaree.
his mind has become immaculate by conquering egotism.
ਹਉਮੈ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਸਹਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਰਸਨਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
sehjay gun gaavai rang raataa rasnaa raam raveejai hay. ||3||
In a state of spiritual poise, he keeps singing God’s praises; he remains imbued with God’s love and his tongue keeps uttering His Name. ||3||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਤ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ॥ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਫਿਰੈ ਇਆਣੀ ॥
mayree mayree karat vihaanee. manmukh na boojhai firai i-aanee.
A self-willed naive soul-bride does not understand the righteous living and her entire life passes wandering with the sense of possessiveness.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦੀ, ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਭਟਕਦੀ ਫਿਰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ ‘ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ’ ‘ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ’ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਬੀਤ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਘੜੀ ਮੁਹਤੁ ਨਿਹਾਲੇ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਆਰਜਾ ਛੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
jamkaal gharhee muhat nihaalay an-din aarjaa chheejai hay. ||4||
The fear of death is always hovering over her (every moment she is spiritually deteriorating), and her span of life is decreasing day by day. ||4||
ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਦੂਤ ਹਰ ਨਿਮਖ ਤੇ ਛਿਨ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤਕਦਾ ਹੈ (ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ) ਉਸ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਇਕ ਇਕ ਦਿਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਘਟਦੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਕਰੈ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
antar lobh karai nahee boojhai.
One who indulges in greed, does not understand the righteous way of life.
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਲਾਲਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ) ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ।
ਸਿਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ॥
sir oopar jamkaal na soojhai.
Death keeps hovering over his head, but he does not understand it.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਮੌਤ ਖੜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ।
ਐਥੈ ਕਮਾਣਾ ਸੁ ਅਗੈ ਆਇਆ ਅੰਤਕਾਲਿ ਕਿਆ ਕੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
aithai kamaanaa so agai aa-i-aa antkaal ki-aa keejai hay. ||5||
Whatever one does in this world, comes to face him in the hereafter (one has to bear the consequences); what can he do at that very last moment? ||5||
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਕੁਛ ਬੰਦਾ ਏਥੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਏਦੂੰ ਮਗਰੋਂ ਉਹ ਉਸਦੇ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਆ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅੰਤ ਸਮੇ ਕੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਜੋ ਸਚਿ ਲਾਗੇ ਤਿਨ ਸਾਚੀ ਸੋਇ ॥
jo sach laagay tin saachee so-ay.
Those who are attached to the eternal God, receive true glory.
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਰੋਇ ॥
doojai laagay manmukh ro-ay.
The self-willed person, attached to the love of materialism, suffer spiritually.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਜੀਵ ਦੁੱਖੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਦੁਹਾ ਸਿਰਿਆ ਕਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
duhaa siri-aa kaa khasam hai aapay aapay gun meh bheejai hay. ||6||
God Himself is the Master of both ends (spiritualism and materialism), and He Himself is pleased with His virtues. ||6||
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਸਿਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਤੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਦਾ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਹੈ ॥
gur kai sabad sadaa jan sohai.
One’s life becomes exalted forever by following the Guru’s divine word.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਲਈ ਸ਼ਸ਼ੋਭਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹੈ ॥
naam rasaa-in ih man mohai.
and his mind remains enticed by the elixir of Naam.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਮੈਲੁ ਪਤੰਗੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
maa-i-aa moh mail patang na laagai gurmatee har naam bheejai hay. ||7||
Not even a speck of the dirt of Maya sticks to him and by following Guru’s teachings, he remains delighted with God’s Name.||7||
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਰਤਾ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੀ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਭਿੱਜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਸਭਨਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਇਕੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
sabhnaa vich vartai ik so-ee.
The same one God is pervading all the beings.
ਇਕ ਉਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
gur parsaadee pargat ho-ee.
(One in whose heart), He manifests through the Guru’s Grace,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ (ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਪਰਗਟ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਇ ਸਾਚੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
ha-umai maar sadaa sukh paa-i-aa naa-ay saachai amrit peejai hay. ||8||
he enjoys lasting inner peace by eradicating his ego and partakes in the ambrosial nectar of God’s Name. ||8||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਪੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਦੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
kilbikh dookh nivaaranhaaraa.
God who is the destroyer of sins and sufferings,
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਸਾਰੇ) ਪਾਪ ਅਤੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
gurmukh sayvi-aa sabad veechaaraa.
the Guru’s follower who performed His devotional worship and reflected on the divine word,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕੀਤੀ,ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੀਤੀ,
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
sabh kichh aapay aap vartai gurmukh tan man bheejai hay. ||9||
he became certain that, God Himself pervades everywhere; the body and mind of such a Guru’s follower remain immersed in God’s devotional worship. ||9||
ਉਸਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਨਿਸਚਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ; ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਤਨ ਅਤੇ ਮਨ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ) ਰਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥
ਮਾਇਆ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਲੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ॥
maa-i-aa agan jalai sansaaray.
The fire of worldly desire is burning in the world.
ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ) ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਭੜਕ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
gurmukh nivaarai sabad veechaaray.
The Guru’s follower extinguishes this fire of worldly desires by contemplating on the divine word of the Guru,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ (ਇਸ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ-ਅੱਗ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
antar saaNt sadaa sukh paa-i-aa gurmatee naam leejai hay. ||10||
tranquility always prevails within him and he enjoys inner peace; God can only be lovingly remembered by following the Guru’s teachings. ||10||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਦਾ ਠੰਢ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਉੱਤੇ ਤੁਰਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੦॥
ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਾਸਣਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
indar indaraasan baithay jam kaa bha-o paavahi.
Even the kings like Indira, while sitting on their thrones endure the fear of death.
ਇੰਦਰ ਵਰਗੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਭੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਉੱਤੇ ਬੈਠੇ ਹੋਏ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਸਹਮ ਸਹਾਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਮੁ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ॥
jam na chhodai baho karam kamaaveh.
They perform many ritualistic deeds but the fear of death doesn’t spare them.
ਉਹ ਮਿਥੇ ਹੋਏ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ) ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਦਾ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਤਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਪੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
satgur bhaytai taa mukat paa-ee-ai har har rasnaa peejai hay. ||11||
When one meets the true Guru and follows his teachings only then he is freed from the fear of death and his tongue savours the elixir of God’s Name. ||11||
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਤੋ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ। ਅਤੇ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੧॥
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
manmukh antar bhagat na ho-ee.
Devotional worship for God does not well-up within a self-willed person.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
gurmukh bhagat saaNt sukh ho-ee.
The Guru’s follower receives inner peace and tranquility through the devotional worship of God.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਨੂੰ ਠੰਡ-ਚੈਨ ਤੇ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
pavitar paavan sadaa hai banee gurmat antar bheejai hay. ||12||
The Guru’s divine word is extremely immaculate forever; one’s mind is appeased in the divine word through the Guru’s teachings. ||12||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਦਾ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਪਤੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੨॥
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
barahmaa bisan mahays veechaaree.
Angels like Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and other thoughtful persons.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ, ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂ, ਸ਼ਿਵ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਚਾਰਵਾਨ ਲੋਕ,
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਧਕ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਿਰਾਰੀ ॥
tarai gun baDhak mukat niraaree.
are bound in the three modes (vice, virtue, and power) of Maya, therefore, liberation from vices remains away from them
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝੇ ਪਏ ਹਨ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਮੋਖਸ਼ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਲਾਂਭੇ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
