ਗਿਆਨੀ ਧਿਆਨੀ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
gi-aanee Dhi-aanee aakh sunaa-ay.
This is what the men of divine wisdom and who practice meditation tell others.
ਸਿਆਣੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਸਮਾਧੀਆਂ ਲਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਭੀ (ਇਹੀ ਗੱਲ) ਆਖ ਕੇ ਸੁਣਾ ਗਏ ਹਨ।
ਸਭਨਾ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਸਮਾਹੇ ਆਪੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਹੋਰ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
sabhnaa rijak samaahay aapay keemat hor na ho-ee hay. ||2||
God Himself nourishes all; no one else can estimate His worth. ||2||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰਿਜ਼ਕ ਅਪੜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮੁਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੨॥
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਅੰਧੁ ਅੰਧਾਰਾ ॥
maa-i-aa moh anDh anDhaaraa.
The love for materialism is due to an utter darkness of ignorance.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਜਗਤ) ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥
ha-umai mayraa pasri-aa paasaaraa.
Egotism and possessiveness have spread throughout the expanse of the universe.
(ਹਰ ਪਾਸੇ) ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਮਮਤਾ ਦਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਖਿਲਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਲਤ ਰਹੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
an-din jalat rahai din raatee gur bin saaNt na ho-ee hay. ||3||
People are always suffering in the love for worldly desires; inner peace is not attained without following the Guru’s teachings. ||3||
ਜਗਤ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ (ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ) ਸੜ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ॥੩॥
ਆਪੇ ਜੋੜਿ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਆਪੇ ॥
aapay jorh vichhorhay aapay.
God Himself unites people (as friends and families) and Himself separates them.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ (ਇਥੇ ਪਰਵਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪੋ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਵਿਛੋੜ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ਆਪੇ ॥
aapay thaap uthaapay aapay.
He Himself creates and He Himself destroys everything.
ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਚਾ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ਹੋਰਨਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
sachaa hukam sachaa paasaaraa horan hukam na ho-ee hay. ||4||
Eternal is His command, and true is His expanse, and no one else can issue such eternal command. ||4||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਅਟੱਲ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਇਹ) ਜਗਤ-ਪਸਾਰਾ ਭੀ ਸਚ-ਮੁਚ ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਪਾਸੋਂ (ਅਜਿਹਾ) ਹੁਕਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੪॥
ਆਪੇ ਲਾਇ ਲਏ ਸੋ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
aapay laa-ay la-ay so laagai.
He alone is attached to God’s devotional worship, whom He Himself attaches,
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਭਾਗੈ ॥
gur parsaadee jam kaa bha-o bhaagai.
and by the Guru’s grace, that person’s fear of death goes away.
ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
antar sabad sadaa sukh-daata gurmukh boojhai ko-ee hay. ||5||
The peace giving divine word of the Guru dwells forever within him; but only a rare follower of the Guru understands this mystery. ||5||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਸ ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
aapay maylay mayl milaa-ay.
God Himself unites one with Himself by first uniting him with the Guru.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ) ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੁਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੋ ਮੇਟਣਾ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥
purab likhi-aa so maytnaa na jaa-ay.
What is preordained, that cannot be erased.
ਜੋ ਕੁੱਛ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਜੀਵ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਮਿਟਾਇਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਹੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
an-din bhagat karay din raatee gurmukh sayvaa ho-ee hay. ||6||
A follower of the Guru always performs devotional worship; the true worship is possible only through the Guru’s teachings. ||6||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
satgur sayv sadaa sukh jaataa.
A follower of the true Guru has always experienced the inner peace,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਆਪੇ ਆਇ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਦਾਤਾ ॥
aapay aa-ay mili-aa sabhnaa kaa daataa.
and God, the benefactor to all, Himself manifests in the Guru’s follower.
ਸਭਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਭੀ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ) ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਚੀਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
ha-umai maar tarisnaa agan nivaaree sabad cheen sukh ho-ee hay. ||7||
By eradicating egotism, a Guru’s follower extinguishes the fire of his worldly desires; inner peace prevails by understanding the Guru’s divine word. ||7||
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਬੁਝਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਸੁਖ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਕਾਇਆ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
kaa-i-aa kutamb moh na boojhai.
One who is infatuated with his body and family, does not understand anything about spiritualism.
(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਸਰੀਰ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ (ਗ੍ਰਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ) ਪਰਵਾਰ (ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਗ੍ਰਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ) (ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਖੇਡ ਨੂੰ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਤ ਆਖੀ ਸੂਝੈ ॥
gurmukh hovai ta aakhee soojhai.
If one follows the Guru’s teachings, then everything becomes apparent to his spiritually enlightened eyes.
ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਜਾਏ, ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਦਿੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
an-din naam ravai din raatee mil pareetam sukh ho-ee hay. ||8||
Then he always lovingly meditates on God’s Name and by realizing the beloved God, he attains inner peace. ||8||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਧਾਤੁ ਦੂਜੈ ਹੈ ਲਾਗਾ ॥
manmukh Dhaat doojai hai laagaa.
A self-willed person lives under the influence of materialism and he always remains engrossed in the love for duality (things other than God),
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ (ਗ੍ਰਸੀ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਆਹਰ) ਵਿਚ ਰੁੱਝਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਨਮਤ ਕੀ ਨ ਮੂਓ ਆਭਾਗਾ ॥
janmat kee na moo-o aabhaagaa.
why didn’t this unfortunate person die as soon as he was born?
ਉਹ ਬਦ-ਨਸੀਬ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੀ ਕਿਉਂ ਨ ਮਰ ਗਿਆ?
ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
aavat jaat birthaa janam gavaa-i-aa bin gur mukat na ho-ee hay. ||9||
Remaining in the cycle of birth and death, he wastes his human life; liberation from the vices is not received without following the Guru’s teachings. ||9||
ਉਹ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਨਮ ਗਵਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ਤੋ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ॥੯॥
ਕਾਇਆ ਕੁਸੁਧ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਈ ॥
kaa-i-aa kusuDh ha-umai mal laa-ee.
Impure is that body which is soiled with the filth of egotism.
ਉਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਅਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਜੇ ਸਉ ਧੋਵਹਿ ਤਾ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
jay sa-o Dhoveh taa mail na jaa-ee.
Even if this body is washed a hundred of times, still this dirt of ego does not go away.
ਜੇ (ਅਜੇਹੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਤੀਰਥ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਲੋਕ) ਸੌ ਵਾਰੀ ਭੀ ਧੋਂਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ, ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਇਹ ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਸਬਦਿ ਧੋਪੈ ਤਾ ਹਛੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਮੈਲੀ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
sabad Dhopai taa hachhee hovai fir mailee mool na ho-ee hay. ||10||
But if the heart is focused on the divine word of the Guru, then the body becomes truly cleansed and is never soiled again with ego. ||10||
ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ ਧੋਤਾ ਜਾਏ, ਤਾਂ ਸਰੀਰ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੁੜ ਸਰੀਰ (ਹਉਮੈ ਨਾਲ) ਕਦੇ ਗੰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ॥੧੦॥
ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤ ਕਾਇਆ ਸੰਘਾਰਹਿ ॥
panch doot kaa-i-aa sanghaareh.
Five demons (lust, anger, greed, attachment, ego) keep destroying the body,
ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜੇ ਵੈਰੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਗਾਲਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਵੀਚਾਰਹਿ ॥
mar mar jameh sabad na vichaareh.
of those who do not reflect on the Guru’s divine word; they remain in the cycle of birth and death.
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਚਾਰਦੇ , ਉਹ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ਜਿਉ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਸੁਧਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
antar maa-i-aa moh gubaaraa ji-o supnai suDh na ho-ee hay. ||11||
Within them is the darkness of ignorance due to their love for Maya, they are not aware of themselves as if they are living in a dream. ||11||
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਦੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਉਹ ਇਉਂ ਹਨ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਿਚ ਹਨ ॥੧੧॥
ਇਕਿ ਪੰਚਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਹੈ ਲਾਗੇ ॥
ik panchaa maar sabad hai laagay.
Many people control their five evil impulses (lust, anger, greed, attachment, and ego) and remain focused on the Guru’s divine word,
ਕਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ;
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਆਇ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਵਡਭਾਗੇ ॥
satgur aa-ay mili-aa vadbhaagay.
they are the fortunate people who have followed the true Guru’s teachings.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਆ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਰਵਹਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
antar saach raveh rang raatay sahj samaavai so-ee hay. ||12||
Imbued with the love of the eternal God, they keep remembering Him, and imperceptibly merge in Him. ||12||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਹਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੨॥
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਚਾਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਜਾਪੈ ॥
gur kee chaal guroo tay jaapai.
The Guru’s path can be learned only from the Guru’s divine word.
ਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਲੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਜੁਗਤਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਹੀ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਪੂਰਾ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਿਞਾਪੈ ॥
pooraa sayvak sabad sinjaapai.
One who truly lives by the Guru’s divine word is known as God’s perfect devotee.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਿੰਞਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਸਦਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਵੈ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
sadaa sabad ravai ghat antar rasnaa ras chaakhai sach so-ee hay. ||13||
He always keeps the Guru’s word enshrined in his heart and by reciting God’s praises with his tongue, keeps enjoying the elixir of God’s Name. ||13||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸਦਾ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਚੱਖਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥
ha-umai maaray sabad nivaaray.
Such a perfect devotee conquers and gets rid of ego through the Guru’s word,
(ਪੂਰਨ ਸੇਵਕ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰ ਮੁਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਖੈ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
har kaa naam rakhai ur Dhaaray.
and keeps God’s Name enshrined in his heart.
ਅਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਏਕਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਉ ਹੋਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਸਹਜੇ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਹੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
aykas bin ha-o hor na jaanaa sehjay ho-ay so ho-ee hay. ||14||
(He believes and says to himself): I do not consider anybody else like God and whatever is happening by His will, is for the best. ||14||
(ਪੂਰਨ ਸੇਵਕ ਇਹੀ ਯਕੀਨ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ-) ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈਂ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ (ਉਸ ਵਰਗਾ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ, ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਠੀਕ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੪॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਹਜੁ ਕਿਨੈ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
bin satgur sahj kinai nahee paa-i-aa.
Nobody has ever attained spiritual stability without following the true Guru’s teachings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥
gurmukh boojhai sach samaa-i-aa.
Only the Guru’s follower understands this fact and remains absorbed in God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚਾ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚ ਰਾਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਖੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
sachaa sayv sabad sach raatay ha-umai sabday kho-ee hay. ||15||
By lovingly remembering God, people imbued with the divine word of God’s praises, eradicate their ego through the Guru’s word. ||15||
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੫॥
ਆਪੇ ਗੁਣਦਾਤਾ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
aapay gundaataa beechaaree.
O’ God, You Yourself are the benefactor of divine virtues after due deliberation.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਯੋਗ ਪਾਤ੍ਰ) ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ) ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ;
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਪਕੀ ਸਾਰੀ ॥
gurmukh dayveh pakee saaree.
Those whom You bless divine virtues through the Guru, win the game of life.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ) ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਜੀਵਨ-ਖੇਡ ਵਿਚ ਪੁੱਗ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵਹਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੨॥
naanak naam samaaveh saachai saachay tay pat ho-ee hay. ||16||2||
O’ Nanak, they remain absorbed in Naam and receive honor from the eternal God. ||16||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਦੀ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧੬॥੨॥

Raag Maaroo, Third Guru:
ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਏਕੋ ਦਾਤਾ ॥
jagjeevan saachaa ayko daataa.
The eternal God, the life of the world, is the only one benefactor for all the living beings.
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ (ਸਾਰੇ) ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
gur sayvaa tay sabad pachhaataa.
God is realized only by following the Guru’s teachings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪੈ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
