Guru Granth Sahib Ji English Translation

The Guru Granth Sahib is the central religious scripture of Sikhism, regarded by Sikhs as the eternal Guru following the ten human Gurus. Compiled by the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan, in 1604, it includes the hymns and teachings of the Sikh Gurus from Guru Nanak to Guru Tegh Bahadur, as well as contributions from various saints and poets of different backgrounds, such as Kabir and Farid.

The Guru Granth Sahib consists of 1,430 pages and covers a wide range of themes, including the nature of God, the importance of truthful living, the value of meditation on God’s name, and the rejection of superstitions and rituals.

ਕਾਨੜਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ 
kaanrhaa mehlaa 5.
Raag Kaanraa, Fifth Guru:

ਮਨ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਚਾਲ ਚਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥ 
man gurmat chaal chalaavaigo. 
O’ my mind, the Guru’s teachings alone can make you practice the righteous way of living. 
ਹੇ ਮਨ (ਤੈਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ (ਹੀ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ) ਚਾਲ ਚਲਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਜੀਅ ਜੀਅਨ ਕੋ ਭਾਗਹੀਨ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਵੈਗੋ ॥ 
satgur daataa jee-a jee-an ko bhaagheen nahee bhaavaigo.
The true Guru is the giver of the spiritual life to all human beings, but theunfortunate one does not develop love for him.
ਗੁਰੂ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਬਦ-ਕਿਸਮਤ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ।

ਸਭ ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਵਿਸਰੀ ਮਨਿ ਚੂਕਾ ਆਲ ਜੰਜਾਲੁ ॥ 
sabh aasaa mansaa visree man chookaa aal janjaal.
All the hope and desire was forsaken and the mind became free of all worldly entanglements.
ਸਾਰੀ ਆਸਾ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਿੱਸਰ ਗਈ, ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਟਿਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ) ਘਰ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ (ਭੀ) ਮੁਕ ਗਿਆ।

ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਓ ਸਭਿ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਦੁਖ ਲਾਥੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ 
gur updays har naam Dhi-aa-i-o sabh kilbikh dukh laathay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Anyone who remembered God with passion and love by following the Guru’s teachings, all his vices and sufferings vanished. ||1||Pause||
(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਤੂ ਜਲ ਨਿਧਿ ਮੀਨ ਹਮ ਤੇਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਖੀਜੈ ॥੮॥੩॥ 
too jal niDh meen ham tayray kar kirpaa sang rakheejai. ||8||3||
You are like our ocean and we human beings are like Your fish, please bestow mercy and keep us in Your refuge (presence). ||8||3||
ਤੂੰ (ਸਾਡਾ) ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈਂ, ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਮੱਛੀਆਂ ਹਾਂ, ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਸਾਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ) ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਰੱਖੀ ਰੱਖ ॥੮॥੩॥

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੪ ॥

Shalok, Fourth Guru:

ਜੋ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਤਿਨ ਸੇਵੇ ਚਰਨ ਨਿਤ ਕਉਲਾ ॥ 
jo japday har har dinas raat tin sayvay charan nit ka-ulaa.
Those who always remember God with adoration, feel so prosperous, as if Kaula, the mythical goddess of wealth, serves them daily.
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ, ਲੱਛਮੀ (ਭੀ) ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ।

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕਰਮ ਬਹੁ ਕੀਨੇ ਨਿਤ ਸਾਖਾ ਹਰੀ ਜੜੀਜੈ ॥ 
nirmal nirmal karam baho keenay nit saakhaa haree jarheejai.
One who has done lots of good and pure deeds, his virtues start multiplying as if everyday a new green branch grows on the tree of his life,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ, (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਹਰੀ ਸ਼ਾਖ਼ ਨਿੱਤ ਉੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ,

ਦੂਖਾ ਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਊਪਜਹਿ ਸੂਖੀ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਦੂਖ ॥ 
dookhaa tay sukh oopjahi sookhee hoveh dookh.
When one turns away from vices, his sorrows become inner peace and when he is involved only in worldly pleasures, then these pleasures produce physical as well as spiritual sorrows for him.
ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ (ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਪਰਤਿਆਂ) ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਤੇ ਦੁਨੀਆਵੀ ਭੋਗਾਂ ਦੇ) ਸੁਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ (ਆਤਮਕ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰਕ) ਰੋਗ ਉਪਜਦੇ ਹਨ।
