The Guru Granth Sahib—the living spiritual Guru in the life of a Sikh—proclaims at the very outset the Oneness of God and contacts through Meditation and Contemplation: “God is formless, eternal, beyond human perception, and can be realized only by ‘Naam Simran’: remembrance and meditation on the divine Name, which constitute the path to spiritual self-realization and merger into the Absolute.”.
The Guru Granth Sahib is that religious book whose teachings serve as the deepest source of morals and ethical values within Sikhism yet inspire the truth seeker all over the world. It is a timeless collection of spiritual wisdom guiding believers toward leading their lives in humility, service, and compassion.
ਪਿਰੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
pir parabh saachaa sohnaa paa-ee-ai gur beechaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ Soul-Bride, you can meet that eternal God (handsome Groom) by contemplating upon the Guru’s Word.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਭਨਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਆਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਭ ਜੀਅ ਤੇਰੇ ਤੂੰ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
sabhnaa tayree aas parabh sabh jee-a tayray tooN raas.
O’ God, You are the Hope of all. All beings are Yours; You are the Wealth of all.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੀ (ਸਹੈਤਾ ਦੀ) ਹੀ ਆਸ ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੇ ਹੀ (ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ) ਹਨ, ਤੂੰ ਹੀ (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਕ) ਰਾਸ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਹੈਂ।
ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ਜਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥
mayray bhaa-ee janaa ko-ee mo ka-o har parabh mayl milaa-ay.
O’ my brothers, please put me in Union with the Almighty.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਰਾਵੋ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਵੇ!
ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਛੁਟੈਗੀ ਬੇਬਾਣਿ ॥
so parabh chit na aa-i-o chhutaigee baybaan.
If you don’t remember God, in the end your body would be abandoned in the wilderness.
ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ) ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਤੇ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਇਹ ਮਸਾਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁੱਟ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਇਗਾ।
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਕੀਆ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਕਵਨੈ ਆਵਹਿ ਕਾਮਿ ॥
dunee-aa kee-aa vadi-aa-ee-aa kavnai aavahi kaam.
O’ my mind, what good are worldly praises?
(ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ!) ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਵਡਿਆਈਆਂ ਕਿਹੜੇ ਕੰਮ ਹਨ?
ਬਾਲਕੁ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਦਰਵਾਰੁ ॥
baalak biraDh na jaanee-ai nihchal tis darvaar.
He is beyond aging and His justice system is resolute.
ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਧਦੀ ਘਟਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਅਟੱਲ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਮੋੜਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ)।
ਜਿਉ ਕੂਕਰੁ ਹਰਕਾਇਆ ਧਾਵੈ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਜਾਇ ॥
ji-o kookar harkaa-i-aa Dhaavai dah dis jaa-ay.
Like the mad dog running around in all directions,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਹਲਕਾਇਆ ਕੁੱਤਾ ਦੌੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਹਰ ਪਾਸੇ ਵਲ ਭੱਜਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵੁਠਾ ਹੋਆ ਖਸਮੁ ਦਇਆਲੁ ॥
sachaa saahib man vuthaa ho-aa khasam da-i-aal.
God, the Master has become Merciful and has come to dwell in my mind.
ਸਚਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ, ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਨਿ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਅਪਣੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਲੈਹਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tuDh bhaavan sohaaganee apnee kirpaa laihi savaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
But only those fortunate ones can please You whom You bless by Your Grace.
ਉਹੀ ਸੁਹਾਗ-ਭਾਗ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੀਆਂ ਲੱਗਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਸੁਚੱਜੀਆਂ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ
