The Guru Granth Sahib, the living spiritual guidance for the Sikhs, stresses above all the Oneness of God, and of meditation and contemplation. It preaches that God is impersonal, eternal, and beyond human perception. Further, the scripture elaborates on the process of “Naam Simran”—that is, remembering and meditating on the divine Name of the lord as the only way to spiritual realization and union with the divine.
The hymns in the Guru Granth Sahib sing about the wide variety of human emotions and experiences and sometimes in times of glee or sorrow, it abates solace.
The scripture also comprises compositions that glorify creation and the divine presence in every tint of life. It reminds that a harmonious existence should be such with nature and pleads for social justice and equality. Through all its teachings, the Guru Granth Sahib has truly been a religious book and great living source for moral and ethical values that would ever vibrate Sikhism and truth-seeker vibrations around the world.
ਮੁੰਧੇ ਗੁਣਹੀਣੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਕੇਹਿ ॥
munDhay gunheenee sukh kayhi.
O soul-bride, without virtue, what happiness can there be?
ਹੇ ਭੋਲੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਏ! ਨੇਕੀ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਕਾਹਦੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੈ?
ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਘੜੀ ਨ ਜੀਵਊ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
tis bin gharhee na jeev-oo bin naavai mar jaa-o.
Without Him, I cannot live, even for a moment. Without His Name I am spiritually dead.
ਉਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈਂ ਇਕ ਘੜੀ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਨੀਰ ॥
ray man aisee har si-o pareet kar jaisee machhulee neer.
O’ my mind, you should love God, like fish loves water.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕਰ, ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਮੱਛੀ ਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ।
ਆਕਾਸੀ ਪਾਤਾਲਿ ਤੂੰ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
aakaasee paataal tooN taribhavan rahi-aa samaa-ay.
O’ God, You are pervading everywhere – in skies, in nether regions and all the three worlds.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਆਕਾਸਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈਂ।
ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
bhaa-ee ray gur bin sahj na ho-ay.
O’ Brothers, without the Guru’s teaching state of equipoise can not be obtained.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮੋਨੀ ਥਕੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥
parh parh pandit monee thakay doojai bhaa-ay pat kho-ee.
Reading and studying, the Pandits and the silent sages have grown weary, but attached to the love of duality, they have lost their honor.
ਘਣਾ ਪੜ੍ਹਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਪੰਡਤ ਤੇ ਚੁੱਪ ਰਹਿਣੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਥੱਕ ਗਏ ਹਨ। ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗੁਆ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਇਹੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ॥
ih jagat bharam bhulaa-i-aa.
This world is lost in illusion.
ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਸਹੀ ਰਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਲਾਂਭੇ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੇ ਕੰਨੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਜੀਉ ॥
day kann sunhu ardaas jee-o.
Please hear my prayer, O Dear Lord.
ਤੂੰ (ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੀ) ਅਰਦਾਸ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਪਤਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਜਾਵੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਮਿਟਾਵੈ ॥
pat saytee jaavai sahj samaavai saglay dookh mitaavai.
He goes with honor, absorbed in the supreme bliss, free of agonies.
ਉਹ ਇਥੋਂ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ-ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
