Pauree:
ਗੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਬਣਾਈ ॥
garheh kaa-i-aa seegaar baho bhaaNt banaa-ee.
Human beings decorate their fortress-like body in many different ways;
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ -ਰੂਪ ਕਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਉਤੇ ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰ ਬਣਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ;
ਰੰਗ ਪਰੰਗ ਕਤੀਫਿਆ ਪਹਿਰਹਿ ਧਰਮਾਈ ॥
rang parang kateefi-aa pahirahi Dhar maa-ee.
these wealthy people wear colorful silken dresses,
ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ-ਧਾਰੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਰੰਗ-ਬਰੰਗੇ ਰੇਸ਼ਮੀ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਹਿਨਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਲਾਲ ਸੁਪੇਦ ਦੁਲੀਚਿਆ ਬਹੁ ਸਭਾ ਬਣਾਈ ॥
laal supayd duleechi-aa baho sabhaa banaa-ee.
and hold many gatherings on red and white rugs.
ਲਾਲ ਤੇ ਚਿੱਟੇ ਦੁਲੀਚਿਆਂ ਉਤੇ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਬੜੀਆਂ ਮਜਲਸਾਂ ਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ|
ਦੁਖੁ ਖਾਣਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਭੋਗਣਾ ਗਰਬੈ ਗਰਬਾਈ ॥
dukh khaanaa dukh bhognaa garbai garbaa-ee.
They always remain puffed up in their egotistical pride and what ever they eat brings pain and they keep enduring misery.
ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਆਕੜ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਖਾਣ ਤੇ ਭੋਗਣ ਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈl
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਅੰਤਿ ਲਏ ਛਡਾਈ ॥੨੪॥
naanak naam na chayti-o ant la-ay chhadaa-ee. ||24||
O’ Nanak, they do not lovingly remember God’s Name, which could liberate them from this suffering in the end.||24||
ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਜੋ (ਦੁੱਖ ਤੋਂ) ਆਖ਼ਰ ਛਡਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨੪॥

Shalok, Third Guru:
ਸਹਜੇ ਸੁਖਿ ਸੁਤੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
sehjay sukh sutee sabad samaa-ay.
By getting absorbed in the Guru’s word, the one who lives in a state of poise and inner peace,
ਜਿਹੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਂਤਿ-ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਆਪੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਈ ਗਲਿ ਲਾਇ ॥
aapay parabh mayl la-ee gal laa-ay.
God unites her with Himself and keeps her close in His embrace.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਾ ਕੇ, ਸੁਆਮੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਚੂਕੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
dubiDhaa chookee sahj subhaa-ay.
Her sense of duality vanishes intuitively,
ਸਹਜ ਸੁਭਾਵਿਕ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦੁਚਿੱਤਾ-ਪਨ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
antar naam vasi-aa man aa-ay.
and God’s Name which pervades within, becomes manifest in her mind.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੇ ਕੰਠਿ ਲਾਏ ਜਿ ਭੰਨਿ ਘੜਾਇ ॥
say kanth laa-ay je bhann gharhaa-ay.
God hugs such people close in His embrace who erase their previous thinking and reform themselves.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਨੂੰ) ਤੋੜ ਕੇ (ਨਵੇਂ ਸਿਰੇ) ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੇ ਹੁਣਿ ਆਣਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak jo Dhur milay say hun aan milaa-ay. ||1||
O’ Nanak, they who were predestined to be united (with God), He has united them with Him now. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਆਰੰਭ ਤੋਂ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

Third Guru:
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਕਿਆ ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪਹਿ ਹੋਰਿ ॥
jinHee naam visaari-aa ki-aa jap jaapeh hor.
Those who have forsaken God’s Name, no matter who else they meditate on and worship?
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਹੈ, ਕੀ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੇ ਉਹ ਹੋਰ ਪੂਜਾ ਪਾਠ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ?
ਬਿਸਟਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੀਟ ਸੇ ਮੁਠੇ ਧੰਧੈ ਚੋਰਿ ॥
bistaa andar keet say muthay DhanDhai chor.
Still they are like worms in the filth, because they have been deceived by the thieves-like worldly entanglements.
ਉਹ ਵਿਸ਼ਟੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੀੜੇ ਹਨ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਜੰਜਾਲ-ਰੂਪ ਚੋਰ ਨੇ ਠੱਗਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਝੂਠੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਹੋਰਿ ॥੨॥
naanak naam na veesrai jhoothay laalach hor. ||2||
O’ Nanak, pray that God’s Name is never forgotten, because greed for anything else is useless. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਇਹੀ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ ਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਹ ਭੁੱਲੇ, ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹਨ ॥੨॥

Pauree:
ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਜਗਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
naam salaahan naam man asthir jag so-ee.
Those alone become spiritually immortal in this world who praise God’s Name and enshrine it in their mind.
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ) ਉਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਅਟੱਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਿਤਵੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ ॥
hirdai har har chitvai doojaa nahee ko-ee.
One who always remembers God in his heart and none other,
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਨੂੰ (ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਨਹੀਂ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ,
ਰੋਮਿ ਰੋਮਿ ਹਰਿ ਉਚਰੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
rom rom har uchrai khin khin har so-ee.
and feels that God’s Name is being recited from every pore of his body and he remembers God at every moment,
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਰੋਮ ਰੋਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਹਰ ਖਿਨ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਕਾਰਥਾ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮਲੁ ਖੋਈ ॥
gurmukh janam sakaarthaa nirmal mal kho-ee.
the life of such a Guru’s follower becomes a success as he becomes immaculate by removing the filth of vices from within.
ਉਸ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਵਦਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਅਮਰਾ ਪਦੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੨੫॥
naanak jeevdaa purakh Dhi-aa-i-aa amraa pad ho-ee. ||25||
O’ Nanak, one who always lovingly remembers the all pervading eternal God, receives the status of spiritual immortality. ||25||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਅਟੱਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਦਰਜਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ |॥੨੫॥

Shalok, Third Guru:
ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਹੋਰਿ ॥
jinee naam visaari-aa baho karam kamaaveh hor.
Those who have forsaken Naam, and perform other kinds of deeds:
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਕਈ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਜਿਉ ਸੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਉਪਰਿ ਚੋਰ ॥੧॥
naanak jam pur baDhay maaree-ah ji-o sanHee upar chor. ||1||
O’ Nanak, they are bound and punished by the demon of death like the thieves caught while breaking in (red handed), ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਬੱਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਇਉਂ ਮਾਰ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸੰਨ੍ਹ ਉਤੋਂ ਫੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਚੋਰ ॥੧॥

Fifth Guru:
ਧਰਤਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੜੀ ਆਕਾਸੁ ਸੁਹੰਦਾ ਜਪੰਦਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥
Dharat suhaavarhee aakaas suhandaa japandi-aa har naa-o.
Earth and sky appear beauteous to those who lovingly remember God’s Name.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਧਰਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਸੁਹਾਵੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣਿਆ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਤਨ ਖਾਵਹਿ ਕਾਉ ॥੨॥
naanak naam vihooni-aa tinH tan khaaveh kaa-o. ||2||
O’ Nanak, those who are devoid of Naam, suffer in such agony of vices as if their bodies are being eaten by crows. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ-ਵਿਕਾਰ ਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ| ॥੨॥

Pauree:
ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਨਿ ਭਾਉ ਕਰਿ ਨਿਜ ਮਹਲੀ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
naam salaahan bhaa-o kar nij mahlee vaasaa.
Those who lovingly praise God’s Name, attain place in God’s abode within their own heart.
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਨਿਰੋਲ ਆਪਣੇ (ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਰੂਪ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ-ਰੂਪ) ਮਹਲ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਓਇ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਨ ਆਵਨੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਹਿ ਨ ਬਿਨਾਸਾ ॥
o-ay baahurh jon na aavnee fir hohi na binaasaa.
They don’t die spiritually, therefore they don’t go into reincarnations any more.
ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਨਾਹ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਨਾਹ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹੇ ਸਭ ਸਾਸ ਗਿਰਾਸਾ ॥
har saytee rang rav rahay sabh saas giraasaa.
With every breath and morsel, they lovingly remain immersed in God.
ਹਰ ਸੁਆਸ ਅਤੇ ਬੁਰਕੀ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਰਚੇ-ਮਿਚੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ;
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ॥
har kaa rang kaday na utrai gurmukh pargaasaa.
These Guru’s followers have been so divinely enlightened that their love for God never fades.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਰੰਗ ਕਦੇ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਤੋਂ) ਉਤਰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਓਇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਮੇਲਿਅਨੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਸਾ ॥੨੬॥
o-ay kirpaa kar kai mayli-an naanak har paasaa. ||26||
O’ Nanak, bestowing mercy, God unites them with Him and they always abide close to Him. ||26||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨੬॥

ਜਿਚਰੁ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਹਰੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਹੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
jichar ih man lahree vich hai ha-umai bahut ahaNkaar.
As long as the mind remains swayed by the waves of Maya, till then it remains puffed up with too much ego and arrogance,
ਜਿਤਨਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀਆਂ) ਲਹਿਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਡੋਲਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਹਉਮੈ ਹੈ ਬੜਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਸਬਦੈ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
sabdai saad na aavee naam na lagai pi-aar.
it does not relish Guru’s word and does not embrace love for God’s Name;
ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦਾ;
ਸੇਵਾ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਵਈ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥
sayvaa thaa-ay na pav-ee tis kee khap khap ho-ay khu-aar.
its service is not approved (in God’s presence) and is tormented in making repeated fruitless efforts.
ਇਸ ਦੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਬੂਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਖਿੱਝ ਖਿੱਝ ਕੇ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਸੋਈ ਆਖੀਐ ਜੋ ਸਿਰੁ ਧਰੇ ਉਤਾਰਿ ॥
naanak sayvak so-ee aakhee-ai jo sir Dharay utaar.
O’ Nanak, only that person is called a true devotee who lets go of his ego and cleverness and completely surrenders before the Guru,
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਸਲੀ ਸੇਵਕ ਅਖਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਚਲਾਕੀ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਭਾਵ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੀਸ ਲਾਹ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਗੇ ਰਖ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਲਏ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਖੈ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
satgur kaa bhaanaa man la-ay sabad rakhai ur Dhaar. ||1||
obeys the true Guru’s will and keeps the Guru’s word enshrined in his heart. ||1||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਕਬੂਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੋ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

Third Guru:
ਸੋ ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਜੋ ਖਸਮੈ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
so jap tap sayvaa chaakree jo khasmai bhaavai.
The deed that pleases the Master-God, in itself is worship, penance and service;
ਜਿਹੜੀ ਕਾਰ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਸੰਦ ਆ ਜਾਏ, ਉਹੀ ਕਾਰ ਜਪ ਹੈ ਤਪ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸੇਵਾ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਹੈ;
ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਏ ਆਪਤੁ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥
aapay bakhsay mayl la-ay aapat gavaavai.
One who renounces one’s self-conceit, on His own God forgives and unites that one with Himself,
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਮਿਟਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ) ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵੀਛੁੜੈ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ॥
mili-aa kaday na veechhurhai jotee jot milaavai.
and such a person once united, is never separated again and his light (soul) becomes one with God.
ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਮੁੜ ਕਦੇ ਵਿਛੁੜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਇਕ-ਮਿਕ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਸੋ ਬੁਝਸੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
naanak gur parsaadee so bujhsee jis aap bujhaavai. ||2||
O’ Nanak, by the Guru’s grace, only that person would understand this riddle whom God Himself blesses with such understanding. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਇਸ ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਸਮਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

Pauree:
ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਹੈ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
sabh ko laykhay vich hai manmukh ahaNkaaree.
Everyone has to live by God’s command, but the arrogant self-willed person does not understand this,
ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਥੀ ਹੋਈ ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਤੁਰਨਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਮਗ਼ਰੂਰ ਆਪ ਹੁਦਰਾ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ,
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੀ ॥
har naam kaday na chayt-ee jamkaal sir maaree.
he never remembers God’s Name, therefore the demon of death punishes him severely.
ਕਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ (ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ) ਜਮਕਾਲ (ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ (ਚੋਟ) ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
