ਮਃ ੧ ॥
mehlaa 1.
First Guru:
ਮਨਹੁ ਜਿ ਅੰਧੇ ਕੂਪ ਕਹਿਆ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ॥
manhu je anDhay koop kahi-aa birad na jaananHee.
People who are totally ignorant, do not understand the human responsibility even when told about it;
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਨੋਂ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਪੁੱਜ ਕੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਨ), ਉਹ ਦੱਸਿਆਂ ਭੀ ਇਨਸਾਨੀ ਫ਼ਰਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ;
ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧੈ ਊਂਧੈ ਕਵਲਿ ਦਿਸਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਖਰੇ ਕਰੂਪ ॥
man anDhai ooNDhai kaval disniH kharay karoop.
being ignorant, their lotuse like hearts are turned upside down (devoid of spiritualism) and they look very ugly.
ਮਨ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਤੇ ਹਿਰਦਾ-ਕਵਲ (ਧਰਮ ਵਲੋਂ) ਉਲਟਿਆ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਕੋਝੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਇਕਿ ਕਹਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਬੁਝਹਿ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਸੁਘੜ ਸਰੂਪ ॥
ik kahi jaaneh kahi-aa bujheh tay nar sugharh saroop.
Many people know how to speak and they understand what is told to them, they seem wise and beautiful.
ਕਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਨੀ ਭੀ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਆਖੀ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਭੀ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁਚੱਜੇ ਤੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਜਾਪਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਇਕਨਾ ਨਾਦ ਨ ਬੇਦ ਨ ਗੀਅ ਰਸੁ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਨ ਜਾਣੰਤਿ ॥
iknaa naad na bayd na gee-a ras ras kas na jaanant.
There are many who don’t have any understanding of divine music, knowledge of Vedas, holy hymns and the differentiation between virtue and vice,
ਕਈ ਨਾਦ ਦਾ ਰਸ, ਵੇਦ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਣ, ਰਾਗ ਵਿਦਿਆ, ਨੇਕੀ ਅਤੇ ਬਦੀ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦੇ,
ਇਕਨਾ ਸੁਧਿ ਨ ਬੁਧਿ ਨ ਅਕਲਿ ਸਰ ਅਖਰ ਕਾ ਭੇਉ ਨ ਲਹੰਤਿ ॥
iknaa suDh na buDh na akal sar akhar kaa bhay-o na laahant.
and there are many who don’t have any spiritual understanding, knowledge, or wisdom, and don’t understand the mystery of the Guru’s word.
ਕਈਆ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਆਣਪ, ਸਮਝ ਅਤੇ ਸਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਮਤ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਇਕ ਅੱਖਰ ਭੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ। ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਨਰ ਅਸਲਿ ਖਰ ਜਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਰਬੁ ਕਰੰਤਿ ॥੨॥
naanak say nar asal khar je bin gun garab karant. ||2||
O’ Nanak, those who have no virtues but egotistically feel proud of themselves, are total idiots like donkeys. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਹ ਹੋਵੇ ਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰੀ ਜਾਣ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਿਰੇ ਖੋਤੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਭ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਹੈ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਪੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
gurmukh sabh pavit hai Dhan sampai maa-i-aa.
Those who follow the Guru’s teachings, their accumulated wealth and possessions are sacred,
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਖਿਆ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਧਨ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਮਾਇਆ ਆਦਿਕ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਅਰਥਿ ਜੋ ਖਰਚਦੇ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
har arath jo kharchaday dayNday sukh paa-i-aa.
because they spend that wealth for religious purposes and for giving to the needy and thereby enjoy inner peace.
ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਰੱਬ ਲੇਖੇ ਭੀ ਖ਼ਰਚਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ (ਲੋੜਵੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ) ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਦੇ ਤਿਨ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥
jo har naam Dhi-aa-iday tin tot na aa-i-aa.
Those who lovingly remember God’s Name, they never feel deprived of anything.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਥੁੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ l
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਵਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੁਟਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
gurmukhaaN nadree aavdaa maa-i-aa sut paa-i-aa.
The Guru’s followers are able to always visualize God’s presence, they share their wealth with others.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਹੱਥੋਂ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਹੋਰੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੨੨॥
naanak bhagtaaN hor chit na aavee har naam samaa-i-aa. ||22||
O’ Nanak, nothing else comes to the minds of these devotees and they remain absorbed in God’s Name. ||22||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਹੋਰ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨੨॥
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੪ ॥

Shalok, Fourth Guru:
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥
satgur sayvan say vadbhaagee.
Fortunate are those who follow the teachings of the true Guru,
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
sachai sabad jinHaa ayk liv laagee.
those who remain focused on God through the Guru’s true word,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਗਿਰਹ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਮਹਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਧੀ ॥
girah kutamb meh sahj samaaDhee.
and even while living in their home and with family, they remain in a state of equipoise.
ਜੋ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ-ਪਰਵਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਭੀ ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਸਚੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥੧॥
naanak naam ratay say sachay bairaagee. ||1||
O’ Nanak, those who are imbued with God’s Name, are truly detached. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਸਲ ਵਿਰਕਤ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਮਃ ੪ ॥
mehlaa 4.
Fourth Guru:
ਗਣਤੈ ਸੇਵ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਕੀਤਾ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
gantai sayv na hova-ee keetaa thaa-ay na paa-ay.
True devotional worship of God is not performed by entering into calculations and whatever is done this way, is not approved in God’s presence;
ਲੇਖੇ ਪਤੇ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਮਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਕੰਮ ਕਬੂਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ।
ਸਬਦੈ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਸਚਿ ਨ ਲਗੋ ਭਾਉ ॥
sabdai saad na aa-i-o sach na lago bhaa-o.
such a calculating person does not rejoice the relish of the Guru’s word, love for God does not well-up within him.
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਮਨਹਠਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
satgur pi-aaraa na lag-ee manhath aavai jaa-ay.
To such a person the true Guru does not seems sweet, keeps coming and going from the Guru’s abode out of sheer obstinacy of his mind,
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਉਹ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਹਠ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ) ਆਉਂਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੇ ਇਕ ਵਿਖ ਅਗਾਹਾ ਭਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਦਸ ਵਿਖਾਂ ਪਿਛਾਹਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
jay ik vikh agaahaa bharay taaN das vikhaaN pichhaahaa jaa-ay.
In spiritual sense, if such a person advances one step forward, he goes ten steps backwards.
ਜੇ ਉਹ ਇਕ ਕਦਮ ਅਗਾਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਦਸ ਕਦਮ ਪਿਛਾਂਹ ਜਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਜੇ ਚਲਹਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥
satgur kee sayvaa chaakree jay chaleh satgur bhaa-ay.
If one lives by the true Guru’s will (teachings), only then he is truly following the true Guru’s teachings.
ਜੇਕਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਜਾ ਅੰਰਦ ਟੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਸਚੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
aap gavaa-ay satguroo no milai sehjay rahai samaa-ay.
One who abandons self-conceit and follows the true Guru’s teachings, remains absorbed in a state of spiritual stability.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਮਿਟਾ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਜਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਚੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
naanak tinHaa naam na veesrai sachay mayl milaa-ay. ||2||
O’ Nanak, such persons never forsake the eternal God’s Name and remain united with Him.||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਜੇਹੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁੱਲਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ (ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:
ਖਾਨ ਮਲੂਕ ਕਹਾਇਦੇ ਕੋ ਰਹਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
khaan malook kahaa-iday ko rahan na paa-ee.
Even those who are known as chiefs or kings, none of them can stay in this world forever;
ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ਾਨ ਤੇ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ ਅਖਵਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ (ਇਥੇ ਸਦਾ) ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ;
ਗੜ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਮੰਦਰ ਗਚ ਗੀਰੀਆ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
garhH mandar gach geeree-aa kichh saath na jaa-ee.
none of the lime-plastered forts or mansions goes with them after death.
ਚੂਨੇ ਗੱਚ ਕਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਮਹਿਲ, ਵਿਚੋਂ ਭੀ ਕੋਈ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ।
ਸੋਇਨ ਸਾਖਤਿ ਪਉਣ ਵੇਗ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
so-in saakhat pa-un vayg Dharig Dharig chaturaa-ee.
Accursed is all their cleverness and possession of horses studded with gold harnesses that run at the speed of wind;
ਧਿੱਕਾਰ-ਜੋਗ ਹਨ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੋਨੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੁਮਚੀਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਵਾ ਵਰਗੀ ਤੇਜ਼ ਰਫਤਾਰ ਵਾਲੇ ਘੋੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਸਿਆਣਪਾ ;
ਛਤੀਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪਰਕਾਰ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਵਧਾਈ ॥
chhateeh amrit parkaar karahi baho mail vaDhaa-ee.
because they eat delicacies in abundance, they are only multiplying filth
ਕਿਉਂਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਛੱਤੀ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਸੁਆਦਲੇ ਖਾਣੇ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਗੰਦਗੀ ਹੀ ਵਧਾਈ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਦੇਵੈ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੨੩॥
naanak jo dayvai tiseh na jaananHee manmukh dukh paa-ee. ||23||
O’ Nanak, the self-willed people do not recognize God who gives them all such gifts, and they endure misery.||23||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਨਮੁਖ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਣਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਂਦੇ, (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਉਹ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨੩॥
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੩ ॥

Shalok, Third Guru:
ਪੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਪੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮੋੁਨੀ ਥਕੇ ਦੇਸੰਤਰ ਭਵਿ ਥਕੇ ਭੇਖਧਾਰੀ ॥
parhH parhH pandit monee thakay daysantar bhav thakay bhaykh-Dhaaree.
Pandits and sages exhausted themselves reading holy books, and those who adorn themselves with holy garbs got tired by wandering in different places;
ਮੁਨੀ ਤੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ ( ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ) ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਥੱਕ ਗਏ, ਭੇਖਧਾਰੀ ਸਾਧੂ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਟਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਥੱਕ ਗਏ ;
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਨਾਉ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
doojai bhaa-ay naa-o kaday na paa-in dukh laagaa at bhaaree.
but being in love with duality (materialism), they never realize God’s Name and become afflicted with extremely severe sorrows.
ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਦੇ ਸਬੱਬ ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ, ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮ ਘਣੇਰਾ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਆ ਚਿਮੜਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਧੇ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਬਿਉਹਾਰੀ ॥
moorakh anDhay tarai gun sayveh maa-i-aa kai bi-uhaaree.
These traders of Maya are spiritually ignorant fools and they remain worshiping the three modes (power, vice, and virtue) of Maya.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਇਹ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ (ਰਜੋ, ਤਮੋ, ਤੇ ਸਤੋ ਗੁਣ) ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਪੂਜਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਉਦਰੁ ਭਰਣ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ਪਾਠ ਪੜਹਿ ਗਾਵਾਰੀ ॥
andar kapat udar bharan kai taa-ee paath parheh gaavaaree.
These fools read holy books for the sake of earning their livelihood but have deception in their minds.
ਇਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਰੋਜ਼ੀ ਕਮਾਣ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ (ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦਾ) ਪਾਠ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਖੋਟ ਹੀ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਜਿਨ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਮਾਰੀ ॥
satgur sayvay so sukh paa-ay jin ha-umai vichahu maaree.
One who has eradicated his ego, he follows the true Guru’s teachings and attains inner peace.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਾਹ ਉੱਤੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੜਣਾ ਗੁਨਣਾ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਉ ਹੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
naanak parh-naa gunnaa ik naa-o hai boojhai ko beechaaree. ||1||
O’ Nanak, God’s Name alone is worthy of studying and pondering over, but a rare thoughtful person understands this. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਨ ਜੋਗ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਚਾਰਵਾਨ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

Third Guru:
ਨਾਂਗੇ ਆਵਣਾ ਨਾਂਗੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਹਰਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਕਿਆ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
naaNgay aavnaa naaNgay jaanaa har hukam paa-i-aa ki-aa keejai.
Everyone comes into this world empty-handed and departs empty-handed; this is what God has ordained, no one can do anything about it.
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ-ਹੱਥ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਹੱਥ ਇਥੋਂ ਤੁਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਇਹੀ ਹੁਕਮ ਪਾ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਹ-ਨੁੱਕਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ l
ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਸੋਈ ਲੈ ਜਾਇਗਾ ਰੋਸੁ ਕਿਸੈ ਸਿਉ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
jis kee vasat so-ee lai jaa-igaa ros kisai si-o keejai.
God whom this life belongs to, shall take it back, so to whom can one complain about it?
(ਇਹ ਜਿੰਦ) ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਚੀਜ਼ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਵਾਪਸ ਲੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ) ਆਦਮੀ ਕੀਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਗਿਲਾ-ਗੁੱਸਾ ਕਰੇ?
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨੇ ਸਹਜੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥
gurmukh hovai so bhaanaa mannay sehjay har ras peejai.
One who is Guru’s follower accepts God’s will in all circumstances and keeps drinking the elixir of God’s Name (remembering God) in a state of equipoise.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਾਹ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰ ਹਾਲਾਤ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਅਡੋਲ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਲਾਹਿਹੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ॥੨॥
naanak sukh-daata sadaa salaahihu rasnaa raam raveejai. ||2||
O’ Nanak, always praise the bliss-giving God, and with your tongue recite God’s Name.||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰੋ, ਤੇ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋ ॥੨॥
