ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲਉ ਭਰਮਸਿ ਭਵਰ ਤਾਰ ॥
man bhoola-o bharmas bhavar taar.
The human mind wanders around like a black bee when strayed in the love for Maya,
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨ ਭੌਰੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਲ ਬਿਰਥੇ ਚਾਹੈ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥
bil birthay chaahai baho bikaar.
because it craves to satisfy the evil desires of its sensory organs.
ਮਨ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਕਰਨੇ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮੈਗਲ ਜਿਉ ਫਾਸਸਿ ਕਾਮਹਾਰ ॥
maigal ji-o faasas kaamhaar.
It gets trapped like an elephant obsessed with lust,
ਇਹ ਮਨ ਕਾਮਾਤੁਰ ਹਾਥੀ ਵਾਂਗ ਫਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕੜਿ ਬੰਧਨਿ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਸੀਸ ਮਾਰ ॥੨॥
karh banDhan baaDhi-o sees maar. ||2||
who gets caught, bound in chains and endures blows of goad on its head. ||2||
ਜੋ ਸੰਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਕੜ ਕੇ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਚੋਟਾਂ ਸਹਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਮਨੁ ਮੁਗਧੌ ਦਾਦਰੁ ਭਗਤਿਹੀਨੁ ॥
man mugDhou daadar bhagtiheen.
The foolish mind remains devoid of devotional worship just like a frog (who remains busy with algae instead of lotus flowers).
ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਡੱਡੂ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਨੇੜੇ ਹੀ ਉੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਕੌਲ ਫੁੱਲ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ)।
ਦਰਿ ਭ੍ਰਸਟ ਸਰਾਪੀ ਨਾਮ ਬੀਨੁ ॥
dar bharsat saraapee naam been.
Devoid of Naam, one is condemned and cursed in God’s presence,
ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਡਿੱਗਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਸਰਾਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,
ਤਾ ਕੈ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਤੀ ਨਾਮ ਲੀਨ ॥
taa kai jaat na paatee naam leen.
He has no social class or honor, and no one wants to talk about him.
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਚੰਗੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਮੰਨੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਚੰਗੀ ਕੁਲ, ਕੋਈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਤਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈਂਦਾ,
ਸਭਿ ਦੂਖ ਸਖਾਈ ਗੁਣਹ ਬੀਨ ॥੩॥
sabh dookh sakhaa-ee gunah been. ||3||
He remains bereft of virtues, all the sufferings are his only companions. ||3||
ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁਖ ਹੀ ਦੁਖ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਥੀ ਬਣੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਮਨੁ ਚਲੈ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਾਖੁ ॥
man chalai na jaa-ee thaak raakh.
O’ brother, keep this mind under control, lest it may wander after the vices.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ ਤਾਕਿ ਇਹ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ) ਭਟਕਦਾ ਨਾਹ ਫਿਰੇ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਨ ਸਾਖੁ ॥
bin har ras raatay pat na saakh.
Without being imbued with the elixir of God’s Name, one does not receive any honor or credit anywhere.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਜਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਾਹ ਕਿਤੇ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਇਤਬਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤੂ ਆਪੇ ਸੁਰਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਰਾਖੁ ॥
too aapay surtaa aap raakh.
O’ God! You Yourself are the listener of our prayers, and Yourself are our savior,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਸਾਡੀਆਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਅਰਦਾਸਾਂ) ਸੁਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਾਡਾ ਰਾਖਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਧਰਿ ਧਾਰਣ ਦੇਖੈ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਿ ॥੪॥
Dhar Dhaaran daykhai jaanai aap. ||4||
after creating the universe, You Yourself understand and take care of it. ||4||
ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਰਚ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਇਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਲੋੜਾਂ ਭੀ) ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਕਿਸੁ ਕਹਉ ਜਾਇ ॥
aap bhulaa-ay kis kaha-o jaa-ay.
(Based on their deeds), when God Himself strays people, then to whom can I go and say anything?
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਆਖਾਂ?
ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਕਹਉ ਮਾਇ ॥
gur maylay birthaa kaha-o maa-ay.
O’ my mother, if God Himself unites me with the Guru, then I could tell him the state of my mind.
ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! ਜੇਕਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਵੇ, ਤਦ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਲ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਾਂ l
ਅਵਗਣ ਛੋਡਉ ਗੁਣ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
avgan chhoda-o gun kamaa-ay.
Then I could renounce my demerits, and acquire virtues.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਹੈਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਗੁਣ ਵਿਹਾਝ ਕੇ ਔਗੁਣ ਛੱਡ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਰਾਤਾ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੫॥
gur sabdee raataa sach samaa-ay. ||5||
One who remains imbued with the Guru’s word, merges in the eternal God.||5||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਮਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਹੋਇ ॥
satgur mili-ai mat ootam ho-ay.
By meeting and following the Guru’s teaching, one’s intellect becomes sublime,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ(ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ) ਮੱਤ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਢੈ ਧੋਇ ॥
man nirmal ha-umai kadhai Dho-ay.
his mind becomes immaculate and he washes out the dirt of ego.
ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਧੋ ਕੇ ਕੱਢ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਦਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਬੰਧਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
sadaa mukat banDh na sakai ko-ay.
He is liberated from the vices forever, and no one can bind him in worldly bonds.
ਉਹ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਬਚਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ (ਵਿਕਾਰ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਬੂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ,
ਸਦਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਅਉਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੬॥
sadaa naam vakhaanai a-or na ko-ay. ||6||
He always lovingly remembers God’s Name, and nothing else interests him. ||6||
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ (ਸ਼ੁਗ਼ਲ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਲ ਖਿੱਚ) ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੬॥
ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
man har kai bhaanai aavai jaa-ay.
The mind keeps wandering in the love for materialism according to God’s will (based on his previous deed),
ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਾਣੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
sabh meh ayko kichh kahan na jaa-ay.
because God Himself pervades in all and nothing else can be said about it.
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਉਲਟ) ਕੋਈ ਹੀਲ-ਹੁੱਜਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਸਭੁ ਹੁਕਮੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
sabh hukmo vartai hukam samaa-ay.
God’s will prevails everywhere, and the entire universe functions by His will.
ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੀ ਚੱਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਬੱਝੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਦੂਖ ਸੂਖ ਸਭ ਤਿਸੁ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੭॥
dookh sookh sabh tis rajaa-ay. ||7||
All pains and pleasures happen as per His will.||7||
(ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਪਰਦੇ) ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁਖ ਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਹਨ ॥੭॥
ਤੂ ਅਭੁਲੁ ਨ ਭੂਲੌ ਕਦੇ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
too abhul na bhoolou kaday naahi.
O’ God, You are infallible, You never make any mistake.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਅਭੁੱਲ ਹੈਂ, ਗ਼ਲਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਤੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਉਕਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦਾ।
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ਮਤਿ ਅਗਾਹਿ ॥
gur sabad sunaa-ay mat agaahi.
That person whom You recite the Guru’s divine word, his intellect becomes deep and profound.
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਭੀ ਅਗਾਧ (ਡੂੰਘੀ) ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਤੂ ਮੋਟਉ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਸਬਦ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
too mota-o thaakur sabad maahi.
O’ God! You are the great Master, and reside in the divine word.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਵੱਡਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈਂ ।
ਮਨੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ॥੮॥੨॥
man naanak maani-aa sach salaahi. ||8||2||
Nanak’s mind is appeased by singing the praises of the eternal God. ||8||2||
ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੇ ॥੮॥੨॥
ਬਸੰਤੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Raab Basant, First Guru:
ਦਰਸਨ ਕੀ ਪਿਆਸ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਰ ਹੋਇ ॥
darsan kee pi-aas jis nar ho-ay.
That person, who is yearning for the blessed vision of God,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਏਕਤੁ ਰਾਚੈ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਦੋਇ ॥
aykat raachai parhar do-ay.
abandoning duality, he remains absorbed in God’s Name.
ਉਹ ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੂਰਿ ਦਰਦੁ ਮਥਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
door darad math amrit khaa-ay.
Like churning milk, he repeatedly reflects on the divine world, tastes the ambrosial nectar of Naam and all his grief disappears.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਬਦ ਰਿੜਕ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਚੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ-ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਏਕ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥
gurmukh boojhai ayk samaa-ay. ||1||
By following the Guru’s teachings, he realizes God and merges in Him. ||1||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਉ ਕੇਤੀ ਬਿਲਲਾਇ ॥
tayray darsan ka-o kaytee billaa-ay.
O’ God, innumerable human beings wail for Your blessed vision,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਬੇਅੰਤ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਤਰਲੇ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਚੀਨਸਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
virlaa ko cheenas gur sabad milaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
but only a rare one, through the Guru’s word, recognizes You and unites with You.||1||pause||
ਪਰ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ (ਤੇਰੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਅਭੇਦ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਬੇਦ ਵਖਾਣਿ ਕਹਹਿ ਇਕੁ ਕਹੀਐ ॥
bayd vakhaan kaheh ik kahee-ai.
Those who reflect on the Vedas also say that we should lovingly remember God.
ਵੇਦ ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕ ਭੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਇਹੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਇਕ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਓਹੁ ਬੇਅੰਤੁ ਅੰਤੁ ਕਿਨਿ ਲਹੀਐ ॥
oh bay-ant ant kin lahee-ai.
He is infinite; who has found His limits?
ਉਹ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਕਿਸ ਨੇ ਲੱਭਾ ਹੈ ?
ਏਕੋ ਕਰਤਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਗੁ ਕੀਆ ॥
ayko kartaa jin jag kee-aa.
God is the only one creator, who created the world.
ਉਹ ਇਕ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਜਗਤ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਬਾਝੁ ਕਲਾ ਧਰਿ ਗਗਨੁ ਧਰੀਆ ॥੨॥
baajh kalaa Dhar gagan Dharee-aa. ||2||
and without any apparent support has held the earth and sky in place. ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਸਹਾਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਠਹਰਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਏਕੋ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਧੁਨਿ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
ayko gi-aan Dhi-aan Dhun banee.
Singing the divine words of God’s praises is the spiritual wisdom and meditation.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਲਗਨ ਹੀ ਅਸਲ ਗਿਆਨ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਅਸਲ ਧਿਆਨ (ਜੋੜਨਾ) ਹੈ।
ਏਕੁ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਅਕਥ ਕਹਾਣੀ ॥
ayk niraalam akath kahaanee.
God alone is the one who does not need any support; we should sing the praises of the indescribable God.
ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਐਸਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਸਹਾਰੇ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਸ ਅਕੱਥ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ
ਏਕੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚਾ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥
ayko sabad sachaa neesaan.
The divine word of God’s praises is the only true insignia in one’s spiritual journey in life,
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੀ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਇਸ ਜੀਵਨ-ਪੰਧ ਵਿਚ) ਸੱਚਾ ਪਰਵਾਨਾ ਹੈ,
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੩॥
pooray gur tay jaanai jaan. ||3||
and a wise person receives this understanding from the Perfect Guru. ||3||
ਸਿਆਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ (ਇਹ) ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਏਕੋ ਧਰਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੈ ਸਚੁ ਕੋਈ ॥
ayko Dharam darirhai sach ko-ee.
One who firmly believes that remembering God is the only righteous thing to do,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਬਿਠਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਹੀ ਇਕੋ ਇਕ ਠੀਕ ਧਰਮ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
gurmat pooraa jug jug so-ee.
through the Guru’s teachings, he becomes spiritually stable against the vices forever.
ਉਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਟਾਕਰੇ ਤੇ) ਅਡੋਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਅਨਹਦਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰ ॥
anhad raataa ayk liv taar.
That person always lovingly remains absorbed in the eternal God.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਕ-ਤਾਰ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਓਹੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰ ॥੪॥
oh gurmukh paavai alakh apaar. ||4||
By following the Guru’s teachings, he experiences the blessed vision of the incomprehensible and limitless God.||4||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਤੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਏਕੋ ਤਖਤੁ ਏਕੋ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ॥
ayko takhat ayko paatisaahu.
There is one eternal throne and there is only one God, the sovereign king in the entire universe.
ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ) ਇਕੋ ਇਕ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਉਸੇ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਇਕੋ ਇਕ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਹੈ।
ਸਰਬੀ ਥਾਈ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ॥
sarbee thaa-ee vayparvaahu.
That carefree God, the sovereign king, pervades everywhere.
ਉਹ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਸਭ ਥਾਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ (ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਕਾਰ ਚਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਭੀ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ) ਬੇ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਕੀਆ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
tis kaa kee-aa taribhavan saar.
The entire universe is His creation; He is the origin of all the three worlds.
ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਉਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਹੈ,
ਓਹੁ ਅਗਮੁ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ॥੫॥
oh agam agochar aykankaar. ||5||
He is inaccessible, incomprehensible and is all by Himself everywhere. ||5||
ਉਹ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਹੈ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਉਸ ਤਕ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ, (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਏਕਾ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
aykaa moorat saachaa naa-o.
This entire creation is His Form and the absolute truth is His Name.
(ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਉਸੇ) ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਥੈ ਨਿਬੜੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਨਿਆਉ ॥
tithai nibrhai saach ni-aa-o.
True justice is administered in His presence.
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਚੱਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚੀ ਕਰਣੀ ਪਤਿ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
saachee karnee pat parvaan.
One who practices righteous living is honored and accepted,
ਜੋ ਸੱਚ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਆਬਰੂ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕਬੂਲ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਾਣੁ ॥੬॥
saachee dargeh paavai maan. ||6||
and he receives honor in God’s presence. ||6||
ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ਮਾਣ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ॥੬॥
ਏਕਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਏਕੋ ਹੈ ਭਾਉ ॥
aykaa bhagat ayko hai bhaa-o.
The one and only way of God’s devotional worship is to love Him.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੀ ਇਕੋ ਇਕ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਭੈ ਭਗਤੀ ਆਵਉ ਜਾਉ ॥
bin bhai bhagtee aava-o jaa-o.
One who is without the revered fear of God and His devotional worship, keeps going through the cycle of birth and death.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਮਝਿ ਰਹੈ ਮਿਹਮਾਣੁ ॥
gur tay samajh rahai mihmaan.
One who follows the Guru’s teachings and lives like a guest in this world for a short time,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਲੈ ਕੇ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਪ੍ਰਾਹੁਣਾ (ਬਣ ਕੇ) ਜੀਊਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
