ਤੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਕਿਹ ਬਿਚਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
tai saachaa maani-aa kih bichaar. ||1||
on what basis you deem it to be ever-lasting? ||1||
ਤੂੰ ਕੀਹ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ (ਇਸ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ) ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮੰਨੀ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈਂ? ॥੧॥
ਧਨੁ ਦਾਰਾ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਗ੍ਰੇਹ ॥
Dhan daaraa sampat garayh.
O’ my mind, the worldly wealth, spouse and possessions,
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਧਨ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ, ਜਾਇਦਾਦ, ਘਰ-
ਕਛੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਸਮਝ ਲੇਹ ॥੨॥
kachh sang na chaalai samajh layh. ||2||
none of these shall go along with you, understand it clearly. ||2||
ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਮਝ ਲੈ ਕਿ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਚੀਜ਼ (ਮੌਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ॥੨॥
ਇਕ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਾਰਾਇਨ ਹੋਇ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
ik bhagat naaraa-in ho-ay sang.
Only the devotional worship of God accompanies one in the end,
ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਜੁ ਤਿਹ ਏਕ ਰੰਗਿ ॥੩॥੪॥
kaho naanak bhaj tih ayk rang. ||3||4||
O’ Nanak say, O’ my mind, remember God with loving devotion. ||3||4||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਯਾਦ ਕਰ ॥੩॥੪॥

ਕਹਾ ਭੂਲਿਓ ਰੇ ਝੂਠੇ ਲੋਭ ਲਾਗ ॥
kahaa bhooli-o ray jhoothay lobh laag.
O’ brother, where are you lost, engrossed in the greed for the perishable Maya?
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ (ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ) ਕਿੱਥੇ ਖੁੰਝਿਆ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ?
ਕਛੁ ਬਿਗਰਿਓ ਨਾਹਿਨ ਅਜਹੁ ਜਾਗ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kachh bigri-o naahin ajahu jaag. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Nothing is lost yet, if you wake up now and start remembering God with adoration . ||1||Pause||
ਹੁਣ ਹੀ ਜਾਗ ਪਓ (ਸਿਆਣਾ ਬਣ, ਜੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰੇਂ), ਤਾਂ ਅਜੇ ਭੀ ਕੁਝ ਵਿਗੜਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਮ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਕੈ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਜਾਨੁ ॥
sam supnai kai ih jag jaan.
O’ brother, consider this world like a dream,
ਇਸ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਪਨੇ (ਵਿਚ ਵੇਖੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ) ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਸਮਝ।
ਬਿਨਸੈ ਛਿਨ ਮੈ ਸਾਚੀ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੧॥
binsai chhin mai saachee maan. ||1||
which disappears in an instant; accept this as a true fact. ||1||
ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਸੱਚੀ ਮੰਨ ਕਿ (ਇਹ ਜਗਤ) ਇਕ ਛਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਸੰਗਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਬਸਤ ਨੀਤ ॥
sang tayrai har basat neet.
God always abides with you:
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ:
ਨਿਸ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਭਜੁ ਤਾਹਿ ਮੀਤ ॥੨॥
nis baasur bhaj taahi meet. ||2||
O’ my friend, always remember Him with loving devotion. ||2||
ਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! ਤੂੰ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰ ॥੨॥
ਬਾਰ ਅੰਤ ਕੀ ਹੋਇ ਸਹਾਇ ॥
baar ant kee ho-ay sahaa-ay.
O’ brother, God alone becomes your supporter at the end (the time of death).
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਅਖ਼ੀਰਲੇ ਸਮੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਮਦਦਗਾਰ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਨ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਗਾਇ ॥੩॥੫॥
kaho naanak gun taa kay gaa-ay. ||3||5||
Nanak says, always sing His praises. ||3||5||
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ (ਸਦਾ) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ਕਰ ॥੩॥੫॥

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

One eternal God, realized by the grace of the True Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਗੁ ਕਊਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਚੀਤਿ ॥
jag ka-oo-aa naam nahee cheet.
One who does not cherish God’s Name in his mind, his nature is like that of a crow in this world;
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਜੀਵ ਕਾਂ (ਦੇ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਵਾਲਾ) ਹੈ;
ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਗਿਰੈ ਦੇਖੁ ਭੀਤਿ ॥
naam bisaar girai daykh bheet.
forsaking God’s Name, he sees the bait and falls in the traps of evil temptations like a crow.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ (ਉਹ ਕਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ) ਚੋਗੇ ਤੇ ਡਿੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਨੂਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਚੀਤਿ ਅਨੀਤਿ ॥
manoo-aa dolai cheet aneet.
His mind is engrossed in evil intents and keeps wavering.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲ ਹੀ) ਡੋਲਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ (ਸਦਾ) ਖੋਟ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਗ ਸਿਉ ਤੂਟੀ ਝੂਠ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥੧॥
jag si-o tootee jhooth pareet. ||1||
People’s love for materialism is false and ultimately breaks. ||1||
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਝੂਠੀ ਹੈ, ਟੁੱਟ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,ਕਦੇ ਤੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ॥੧॥
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਖੁ ਬਜਰੁ ਭਾਰੁ ॥
kaam kroDh bikh bajar bhaar.
Lust and greed is like a poison and is a heavy burden which causes deterioration of one’s spiritual life;
(ਕਾਮ ਤੇ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਇਕ ਕਰੜਾ ਬੋਝ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹੇਠ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਘੁੱਟ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਗੁਨ ਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naam binaa kaisay gun chaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
then how can anyone maintain a virtuous character without remembering God with loving devotion? ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਆਚਰਨ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਦੇ ਬਣ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਘਰੁ ਬਾਲੂ ਕਾ ਘੂਮਨ ਘੇਰਿ ॥
ghar baaloo kaa ghooman ghayr.
O’ brother, this human body is just like a house of sand surrounded by a whirlpool,
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਇਂਵੇ ਹੈ) ਜਿਵੇਂ ਘੁੰਮਣ-ਘੇਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੇਤ ਦਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਘਰ,
ਬਰਖਸਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਬੁਦਬੁਦਾ ਹੇਰਿ ॥
barkhas banee budbudaa hayr.
or like a bubble seen in the rain water;
ਜਾਂ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਵਰਖਾ ਵੇਲੇ ਬੁਲਬੁਲਾ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ;
ਮਾਤ੍ਰ ਬੂੰਦ ਤੇ ਧਰਿ ਚਕੁ ਫੇਰਿ ॥
matar boond tay Dhar chak fayr.
similar is the fate of the human body created by God from a mere drop of semen by turning the wheel of nature.
ਤਿਵੇਂ ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਪਾਂਇਆਂ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਦਾ ਚੱਕ ਘੁਮਾ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਤਾ ਦੇ ਵੀਰਜ ਦੀ ਬੂੰਦ ਮਾਤ੍ਰ ਤੋਂ ਰਚ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ।
ਸਰਬ ਜੋਤਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਕੀ ਚੇਰਿ ॥੨॥
sarab jot naamai kee chayr. ||2||
(Therefore, if you want to escape spiritual deterioration), then become the devotee of that God whose light is pervading in all. ||2||
(ਸੋ, ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਨੂੰ) ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਸੀ ਬਣਾ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਸਰਬ ਉਪਾਇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਮੋਰੁ ॥
sarab upaa-ay guroo sir mor.
O’ God, You have created all and You are the supreme Guru of all.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਿਰੋਮਣੀ ਹੈਂ, ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈਂ।
ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਉ ਪਗ ਲਾਗਉ ਤੋਰ ॥
bhagat kara-o pag laaga-o tor.
(I wish that), I may lovingly perform Your devotional worship and remain focused on Your immaculate Name;
ਮੇਰੀ ਇਹ ਤਾਂਘ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗਾ ਰਹਾਂ;
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੋ ਚਾਹਉ ਤੁਝ ਓਰੁ ॥
naam rato chaaha-o tujh or.
Imbued in the love of Your Name, I long to remain in Your refuge.
ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਪੱਲਾ ਫੜੀ ਰੱਖਾਂ।
ਨਾਮੁ ਦੁਰਾਇ ਚਲੈ ਸੋ ਚੋਰੁ ॥੩॥
naam duraa-ay chalai so chor. ||3||
One who treads on the path of life while keeping away from Your Name, is a thief in Your presence.||3||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਤੋਂ) ਦੂਰ ਦੂਰ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਪੰਧ ਵਿਚ) ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਤੇਰਾ ਚੋਰ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ਬਿਖੁ ਅੰਚਲਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
pat kho-ee bikh anchal paa-ay.
One who amasses the poison of vices, loses respect.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਹੀ ਪੱਲੇ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਸਾਚ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੋ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
saach naam rato pat si-o ghar jaa-ay.
But one who is imbued with the love of the eternal God’s Name goes to his divine home with honor.
ਪਰ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦੇਸ ਵਿਚ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਨ੍ਸਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਜਾਇ ॥
jo kichh keenHas parabh rajaa-ay.
(He truly believes that) whatever God does, He does as per His will.
(ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਯਕੀਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਭੈ ਮਾਨੈ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇ ॥੪॥
bhai maanai nirbha-o mayree maa-ay. ||4||
O’ my mother, one lives in God’s revered fear, becomes free of all other worldly fears. ||4||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਗਿੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਇਸ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ ਬੇ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਕਾਮਨਿ ਚਾਹੈ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਭੋਗੁ ॥
kaaman chaahai sundar bhog.
The woman wants to enjoy beautiful things in life.
ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਭੋਗ ਲੋੜਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਪਾਨ ਫੂਲ ਮੀਠੇ ਰਸ ਰੋਗ ॥
paan fool meethay ras rog.
But all the worldly pleasures like the betel leaves, garlands of flowers and sweet tastes lead only to afflictions.
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਪਾਨ ਫੁੱਲ ਮਿੱਠੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ-ਇਹ ਸਭ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਰੋਗ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਖੀਲੈ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਤੇਤੋ ਸੋਗ ॥
kheelai bigsai tayto sog.
The more she giggles and feels delighted in the involvement of such false pleasures, the more she suffers and mourns later.
ਜਿਤਨਾ ਹੀ ਵਧੀਕ ਉਹ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਭੋਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਖਿੱਲੀਆਂ ਮਾਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਤਨਾ ਹੀ ਵਧੀਕ ਦੁੱਖ-ਰੋਗ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਣਾਗਤਿ ਕੀਨ੍ਸਿ ਹੋਗ ॥੫॥
parabh sarnaagat keenHas hog. ||5||
But one who comes to God’s refuge, believes that whatever God does, that happens.||5||
ਪਰ ਜੇਹੜੀ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਕਾਪੜੁ ਪਹਿਰਸਿ ਅਧਿਕੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥
kaaparh pahiras aDhik seegaar.
The soul-bride wears beautiful clothes with all sorts of decorations,
ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਕੱਪੜਾ ਪਹਿਨਦੀ ਹੈ ਵਧੀਕ ਵਧੀਕ ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਮਾਟੀ ਫੂਲੀ ਰੂਪੁ ਬਿਕਾਰੁ ॥
maatee foolee roop bikaar.
she feels proud of her body, but her beauty entices her towards evil passions.
ਆਪਣੀ ਕਾਂਇਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਫੁੱਲ ਫੁੱਲ ਬਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਵਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਬਾਂਧੋ ਬਾਰੁ ॥
aasaa mansaa baaNDho baar.
Her worldly hopes and desires keep that door (the tenth door) closed through which the supreme spiritual state is achieved.
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਤੇ ਖ਼ਾਹਸ਼ਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ (ਦਸਵੇਂ) ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ੇ ਨੂੰ ਬੰਦ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ l
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਸੂਨਾ ਘਰੁ ਬਾਰੁ ॥੬॥
naam binaa soonaa ghar baar. ||6||
Without God’s Name, her heart remains like a deserted home. ||6||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ-ਘਰ ਸੁੰਞਾ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਗਾਛਹੁ ਪੁਤ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਜ ਕੁਆਰਿ ॥
gaachhahu putree raaj ku-aar.
O’ my daughter, the princess, get out of the worldly entanglements,
ਹੇ ਪੁਤ੍ਰੀ , ਹੇ ਰਾਜ-ਕੁਮਾਰੀ, ਉੱਠ ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰਕੇ ਜਾ,
ਨਾਮੁ ਭਣਹੁ ਸਚੁ ਦੋਤੁ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥
naam bhanahu sach dot savaar.
and embellish (make the best use of) your early morning hours by lovingly meditating on God’s Name.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਨਿਤ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ।
ਪ੍ਰਿਉ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਅਧਾਰਿ ॥
pari-o sayvhu parabh paraym aDhaar.
Leaning on His love, meditate on the beloved God,
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰ,
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਬਿਖੁ ਤਿਆਸ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ॥੭॥
gur sabdee bikh ti-aas nivaar. ||7||
and through the Guru’s word, abandon the desire for materialism which is the poison for spiritual life. ||7||
ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਇਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਤੇਰੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਦੇਵੇਗੀ ॥੭॥
ਮੋਹਨਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਲੀਆ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਿ ॥
mohan mohi lee-aa man mohi.
O’ my captivating God, You have enticed my mind,
ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੈਂ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਮੋਹ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨਾ ਤੋਹਿ ॥
gur kai sabad pachhaanaa tohi.
I have realized You through the Guru’s word.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ l
ਨਾਨਕ ਠਾਢੇ ਚਾਹਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੁਆਰਿ ॥
naanak thaadhay chaaheh parabhoo du-aar.
O’ Nanak! pray, O’ God! standing before You, we pray and wish,
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ, ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਖਲੋਤੇ (ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ),
ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੮॥੧॥
tayray naam santokhay kirpaa Dhaar. ||8||1||
that we may remain content through Your Name by Your grace. ||8||1||
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰ, ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰ ਸਕੀਏ ॥੮॥੧॥

Raag Basant, First Guru:
ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲਉ ਭਰਮਸਿ ਆਇ ਜਾਇ ॥
man bhoola-o bharmas aa-ay jaa-ay.
Strayed from the right path, the mind keeps wandering for the sake of Maya.
ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਹੀ) ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅਤਿ ਲੁਬਧ ਲੁਭਾਨਉ ਬਿਖਮ ਮਾਇ ॥
at lubaDh lubhaana-o bikham maa-ay.
It remains engrossed in the greed for the love for poisonous Maya.
ਜਹਿਰ ਰੂਪੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਨਹ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਦੀਸੈ ਏਕ ਭਾਇ ॥
nah asthir deesai ayk bhaa-ay.
It never seems to be steady in the love of God.
ਇਹ ਕਦੇ ਟਿਕਵੀਂ ਹਾਲਤ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ, ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ (ਮਗਨ) ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ।
ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨ ਕੁੰਡਲੀਆ ਕੰਠਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
ji-o meen kundlee-aa kanth paa-ay. ||1||
And gets caught in the web of worldly greed, just as a fish gets its throat caught in a hook. ||1||
ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਫਸਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮੱਛੀ ਭਿੱਤੀ ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਗਲ ਕੁੰਡੀ ਪਵਾ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲਉ ਸਮਝਸਿ ਸਾਚ ਨਾਇ ॥
man bhoola-o samjhas saach naa-ay.
The strayed mind realizes its mistake only by meditating on God’s Name;
ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਹੀ) ਆਪਣੀ ਭੁੱਲ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ਸਹਜ ਭਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur sabad beechaaray sahj bhaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
when it reflects on the Guru’s word, then it attains spiritual poise. ||1||pause||
(ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦੇ ਭਾਵ ਵਿਚ (ਟਿਕਦਾ ਹੈ) ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
