ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਸਭਿ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਨਾਸਹਿ ॥
gur simrat sabh kilvikh naaseh.
By always remembering the Guru and following his teachings, all sins vanish.
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਜਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਫਾਸਹਿ ॥
gur simrat jam sang na faaseh.
Human beings are not caught in the fear of death by remembering the Guru and by following his teachings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ (ਜੀਵ) ਜਮ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਫਸਦੇ ।
ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਾਟੇ ਅਪਮਾਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
gur simrat man nirmal hovai gur kaatay apmaanaa hay. ||2||
The mind of a person becomes immaculate by remembering the Guru, and the Guru saves him from disgrace here and hereafter. ||2||
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਮਨ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਦੀ) ਨਿਰਾਦਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਨਰਕਿ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥
gur kaa sayvak narak na jaa-ay.
The Guru’s disciple does not go to hell (endure sufferings).
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਨਰਕ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ l
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ॥
gur kaa sayvak paarbarahm Dhi-aa-ay.
The Guru’s disciple always lovingly remembers the supreme God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਪਾਏ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਦਾ ਨਿਤ ਜੀਅ ਦਾਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
gur kaa sayvak saaDhsang paa-ay gur kardaa nit jee-a daanaa hay. ||3||
The Guru’s disciple joins the holy congregation, where the Guru always blesses the gift of spiritual life. ||3||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ,ਜਿਥੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਗੁਰ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਸੁਣੀਐ ॥
gur du-aarai har keertan sunee-ai.
We should listen to the praises of God in the Guru’s presence.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਸੁਣਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਭਣੀਐ ॥
satgur bhayt har jas mukh bhanee-ai.
We should recite praises of God by following the true Guru’s teachings.
ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਕਲਿ ਕਲੇਸ ਮਿਟਾਏ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਦੇਵੈ ਮਾਨਾਂ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
kal kalays mitaa-ay satgur har dargeh dayvai maanaaN hay. ||4||
The true Guru eradicates the strifes and sorrows of a person and gives him honor in God’s presence. ||4||
ਗੁਰੂ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਸਾਰੇ ਝਗੜੇ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਮਿਟਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਦਰ-ਸਤਕਾਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਅਗਮੁ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
agam agochar guroo dikhaa-i-aa.
The Guru has revealed the inaccessible and incomprehensible God to the one,
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਤੇ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਭੂਲਾ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
bhoolaa maarag satgur paa-i-aa.
who had gone astray; the true Guru has always shown such a person the righteous path in life.
ਜੋ ਅਸਲੀ ਰਸਤੇ ਤੋ ਭੁਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ, ਅੇਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਹੀ (ਸਦਾ) ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਕ ਕਉ ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨ ਭਗਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਰ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਇਆ ਗਿਆਨਾਂ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
gur sayvak ka-o bighan na bhagtee har poor darirh-aa-i-aa gi-aanaaN hay. ||5||
No obstacles stands in the way of the Guru’s disciple because of his devotional worship, the Guru has firmly instilled the perfect divine wisdom in him. ||5||
ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਰੁਕਾਵਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੱਕੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਗੁਰਿ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਾਇਆ ਸਭਨੀ ਠਾਂਈ ॥
gur daristaa-i-aa sabhnee thaaN-ee.
The Guru has revealed, that God is pervading in all places,
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਭਨੀਂ ਥਾਈਂ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਵਿਖਾਇਆ ਹੈ,
ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਗੋਸਾਈ ॥
jal thal poor rahi-aa gosaa-ee.
and the Master of the Universe is permeating the water and the land.
ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਜਲ ਵਿਚ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਚ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ।
ਊਚ ਊਨ ਸਭ ਏਕ ਸਮਾਨਾਂ ਮਨਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਸਹਜਿ ਧਿਆਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
ooch oon sabh ayk samaanaaN man laagaa sahj Dhi-aanaa hay. ||6||
God is pervading both at high and low places alike; in a state of spiritual poise, the mind is attached to God’s immaculate Name. ||6||
ਉੱਚੇ ਤੇ ਨੀਵੇਂ ਸਭ ਥਾਈਂ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ। ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਲੱਗ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸਭ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
gur mili-ai sabh tarisan bujhaa-ee.
If one meets the Guru (and follows his teachings), then the Guru quenches all his worldly desires.
ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਸਾਰੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ (ਦੀ ਅੱਗ) ਬੁਝਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਨਹ ਜੋਹੈ ਮਾਈ ॥
gur mili-ai nah johai maa-ee.
On meeting the Guru, the love for materialism does not afflict a person.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਆਪਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਦੀਆ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀ ਪਾਨਾਂ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
sat santokh dee-aa gur poorai naam amrit pee paanaaN hay. ||7||
One who has been blessed by the true Guru with truth and contentment, drinks the ambrosial nectar of Naam and inspires others to drink it. ||7||
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਸਤ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਆਪ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਭ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥
gur kee banee sabh maahi samaanee.
The Guru’s divine word is permeating in the heart of all human beings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਿ ਸੁਣੀ ਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥
aap sunee tai aap vakhaanee.
The Guru has personally heard the divine word from God and has personally recited to the human beings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਆਪ ਸੁਣੀ ਅਤੇ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਆਪ ਸੁਣਾਈ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਨਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਪੀ ਤੇਈ ਸਭਿ ਨਿਸਤ੍ਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਥਾਨਾਂ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
jin jin japee tay-ee sabh nistaray tin paa-i-aa nihchal thaanaaN hay. ||8||
Whoever has lovingly remembered the divine word, has swam across the world-ocean of vices and have attained a state of spiritual stability. ||8||
ਜਿਸ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਬਾਣੀ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਈ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਗਏ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਨਾ ਡੋਲਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
satgur kee mahimaa satgur jaanai.
The true Guru alone knows the glory of his supreme spiritual status.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਉੱਚ-ਆਤਮਕਤਾ (ਵਡਿਆਈ), ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ (ਹੀ) ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਆਪਣ ਭਾਣੈ ॥
jo kichh karay so aapan bhaanai.
The Guru knows that whatever God does, He does as per His own will.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਧੂ ਧੂਰਿ ਜਾਚਹਿ ਜਨ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦ ਕੁਰਬਾਨਾਂ ਹੇ ॥੯॥੧॥੪॥
saaDhoo Dhoor jaacheh jan tayray naanak sad kurbaanaaN hay. ||9||1||4||
O’ Nanak, God’s devotees humbly seek the Guru’s teachings and are always dedicated to him. ||9||1||4||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ (ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ) ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੯॥੧॥੪॥

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad.
One eternal God, realized by the grace of the true Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਦਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
aad niranjan parabh nirankaaraa.
The primal, immaculate, and formless God,
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਸਰੂਪ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ,
ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰਾਰਾ ॥
sabh meh vartai aap niraaraa.
pervades in all the creatures; yet He Himself remains detached from everything.
ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਵਰਨੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਚਿਹਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਸਭ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥
varan jaat chihan nahee ko-ee sabh hukmay sarisat upaa-idaa. ||1||
God does not have any caste, color or feature; He creates the entire universe as per His own will. ||1||
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ (ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਆਦਿਕ) ਵਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ, ਕੋਈ ਜਾਤਿ ਨਹੀਂ, ਕੋਈ ਚਿਹਨ ਨਹੀਂ। ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਜੋਨਿ ਸਬਾਈ ॥
lakh cha-oraaseeh jon sabaa-ee.
Out of all the millions of species of beings,
ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਚੌਰਾਸੀ ਲੱਖ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ,
ਮਾਣਸ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਦੀਈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
maanas ka-o parabh dee-ee vadi-aa-ee.
God has blessed human beings with the glory of highest status.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਨੂੰ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ।
ਇਸੁ ਪਉੜੀ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਨਰੁ ਚੂਕੈ ਸੋ ਆਇ ਜਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥
is pa-orhee tay jo nar chookai so aa-ay jaa-ay dukh paa-idaa. ||2||
A person who falters from this position (misses this opportunity to unite with God) keeps suffering in the cycle of birth and death. ||2||
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਪੌੜੀ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਭੋਗਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ॥
keetaa hovai tis ki-aa kahee-ai.
It is useless to glorify the one created by God. (we should sing praises of God)
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਲਹੀਐ ॥
gurmukh naam padaarath lahee-ai.
Instead, we should try to receive the invaluable Naam by following the Guru’s teachings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਸੋਈ ਭੂਲੈ ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥
jis aap bhulaa-ay so-ee bhoolai so boojhai jisahi bujhaa-idaa. ||3||
Based on his deeds, whom God Himself strays, gets lost into the wrong path in life; he alone understands the righteous path, whom God Himself inspires. ||3||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਸਤਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਸਮਝਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਕਾ ਨਗਰੁ ਇਹੁ ਕੀਆ ॥
harakh sog kaa nagar ih kee-aa.
God has made this body like a city, in which are both pleasures and sorrows,
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਗ਼ਮੀ ਦਾ ਨਗਰ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣੀਆ ॥
say ubray jo satgur sarnee-aa.
they alone rise above the effects of pleasures and sorrows, who seek the refuge of the true Guru.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੀ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਤ੍ਰਿਹਾ ਗੁਣਾ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਰਾਰਾ ਸੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥
tarihaa gunaa tay rahai niraaraa so gurmukh sobhaa paa-idaa. ||4||
One who follows of the Guru’s teachings and remains detached from the three impulses of Maya (vice, virtue, and power), receives glory. ||4||
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸੋਭਾ ਖੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਅਨਿਕ ਕਰਮ ਕੀਏ ਬਹੁਤੇਰੇ ॥
anik karam kee-ay bahutayray.
Even if innumerable ritualistic deeds are done, but instead of remembering God,
(ਨਾਮ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਆਦਿਕ ਭਾਵੇਂ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਬਥੇਰੇ (ਮਿਥੇ ਹੋਏ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਕਰਮ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਣ,
ਜੋ ਕੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਬੰਧਨੁ ਪੈਰੇ ॥
jo keejai so banDhan pairay.
whatever is done is like the shackles of Maya in the feet of a person.
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਭੀ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਕਰਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਇਸ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਫਾਹੀ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕੁਰੁਤਾ ਬੀਜੁ ਬੀਜੇ ਨਹੀ ਜੰਮੈ ਸਭੁ ਲਾਹਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਗਵਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥
kurutaa beej beejay nahee jammai sabh laahaa mool gavaa-idaa. ||5||
It is like the seed which is planted out of season does not germinate, and all one’s capital and profits are lost. ||5||
ਜਿਵੇਂ, ਬੇ-ਬਹਾਰਾ ਬੀਜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਬੀਜ ਉੱਗਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ। ਮਨੁੱਖ ਖੱਟੀ ਭੀ ਗਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਰਾਸ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਭੀ ਗਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਕਲਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਪਰਧਾਨਾ ॥
kaljug meh keertan parDhaanaa.
In the present period called Kalyug, singing praises of God is the most sublime deed.
ਕਲਜੁਗ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਹੀ ਪਰਧਾਨ ਕਰਮ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਲਾਇ ਧਿਆਨਾ ॥
gurmukh japee-ai laa-ay Dhi-aanaa.
We should attentively meditate on God’s Name by following the Guru’s teachings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
