ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
poorai satgur sojhee paa-ee.
The perfect true Guru has blessed me with understanding about spiritual life,
ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ) ਸਮਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀ ਹੈ,
ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈ ॥
ayko naam man vasaa-ee.
and now I enshrine God’s Name in my mind.
ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੀ ਤੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
naam japee tai naam Dhi-aa-ee mahal paa-ay gun gaahaa hay. ||11||
I meditate on God’s Name, yes I lovingly remember God’s Name; attaining a place in God’s presence, I sing His praises. ||11||
ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਧਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਅਲਾਪਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੧੧॥
ਸੇਵਕ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
sayvak sayveh man hukam apaaraa.
Devotees of the infinite God perform His devotional worship, obey His command and serve Him.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਗਤ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਮੰਨ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸਾਰਾ ॥
manmukh hukam na jaaneh saaraa.
The self-willed persons do not understand the worth of God’s Command.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦੇ।
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਮੰਨੇ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
hukmay mannay hukmay vadi-aa-ee hukmay vayparvaahaa hay. ||12||
One who obeys God’s command attains glory through His command; he remains absorbed in the command of the carefree God. ||12||
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੁਕਮ (ਮੰਨਣ) ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਦੀ) ਵਡਿਆਈ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੨॥
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
gur parsaadee hukam pachhaanai.
By the Guru’s grace, the one who recognizes God’s Command,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਇਕਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਣੈ ॥
Dhaavat raakhai ikat ghar aanai.
keeps his wandering mind restrained and keeps it focused on Naam within him.
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ) ਇੱਕ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਲੈ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
naamay raataa sadaa bairaagee naam ratan man taahaa hay. ||13||
Imbued with Naam, he remains forever detached from the love for materialism; the jewel-like precious Naam remains enshrined within his mind. ||13||
ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ , ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਉਪਰਾਮ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਰਤਨ-ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
ਸਭ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ॥
sabh jag meh vartai ayko so-ee.
The same one God dwells in the entire world,
ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
gur parsaadee pargat ho-ee.
but He becomes manifest by the Guru’s grace.
ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਹ ਜਾਹਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਬਦੁ ਸਲਾਹਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
sabad salaaheh say jan nirmal nij ghar vaasaa taahaa hay. ||14||
Immaculate are those who sing the praises of God; they dwell within their own inner self in God’s presence. ||14||
ਪਵਿੱਤ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਜੱਸ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲੀ ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚ, (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ) ਵਸੇਬਾ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੪॥
ਸਦਾ ਭਗਤ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
sadaa bhagat tayree sarnaa-ee.
O’ God, Your devotees always stay in Your refuge.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਭਗਤ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
agam agochar keemat nahee paa-ee.
O’ unperceivable and incomprehensible God, Your worth cannot be ascertained.
ਹੇ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਤੇ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਕੋਈ ਤੇਰਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ।
ਜਿਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
ji-o tuDh bhaaveh ti-o too raakhahi gurmukh naam Dhi-aahaa hay. ||15||
O’ God! You keep Your devotees, as You please; they meditate on Your Name by following the Guru’s teachings. ||15||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ,ਉਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਧਿਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੫॥
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ॥ ਸਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਾ ॥
sadaa sadaa tayray gun gaavaa. sachay saahib tayrai man bhaavaa.
O’ the eternal God! forever and ever I may keep singing Your praises, so that I may remain pleasing to You.
ਹੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਮਾਲਕ! ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਕਿ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ।
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਸਚੁ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੧॥੧੦॥
naanak saach kahai baynantee sach dayvhu sach samaahaa hay. ||16||1||10||
O’ God! Nanak prays, please bless me with Your eternal Name, so that I may remain absorbed in it. ||16||1||10||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਦੇਹ, ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਾਂ ॥੧੬॥੧॥੧੦॥
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Raag Maaroo, Third Guru:
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥
satgur sayvan say vadbhaagee.
Those who follow the true Guru’s teachings are very fortunate;
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ;
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
an-din saach naam liv laagee.
because their minds always remain focused on God’s eternal Name.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਲਗਨ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਰਵਿਆ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੈ ਓਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
sadaa sukh-daata ravi-aa ghat antar sabad sachai omaahaa hay. ||1||
God, the giver of peace, abides forever within their hearts, and through the Guru’s divine word, a state of ecstasy pervades in them.||1||
ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਖੇੜਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
nadar karay taa guroo milaa-ay.
When God bestows His gracious glance, then He unites a person with the Guru,
ਜਦੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ (ਹੀ) ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
har kaa naam man vasaa-ay.
and that person enshrines God’s Name in his mind.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸਬਦੇ ਮਨਿ ਓਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
har man vasi-aa sadaa sukh-daata sabday man omaahaa hay. ||2||
God, the giver of peace, abides forever within his mind and because of the Guru’s divine word, his mind remains in a state of enthusiasm. ||2||
ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
kirpaa karay taa mayl milaa-ay.
When God bestows mercy, He unites one with Himself through the Guru;
ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ (ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ) ਮਿਲਾ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
ha-umai mamtaa sabad jalaa-ay.
then that person burns his egotism and worldly attachment through the Guru’s divine word.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਅਤੇ ਮਮਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਾੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਦਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਇਕ ਰੰਗੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਕਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
sadaa mukat rahai ik rangee naahee kisai naal kaahaa hay. ||3||
Imbued with the love of God, he remains free from ego and worldly bonds; he does not enter into conflict with anybody. ||3||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਦਾ ਸਦਕਾ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਤੋਂ) ਸਦਾ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਭੀ ਵੈਰ-ਵਿਰੋਧ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ॥੩॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਘੋਰ ਅੰਧਾਰਾ ॥
bin satgur sayvay ghor anDhaaraa.
One lives in the pitch darkness of spiritual ignorance without following the teachings of the true Guru.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਪਾਰਾ ॥
bin sabdai ko-ay na paavai paaraa.
Without the Guru’s divine word, no one can find the end of this spiritual darkness.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਸ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਦਾ) ਪਾਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਜੋ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਹਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਸਬਦੇ ਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
jo sabad raatay mahaa bairaagee so sach sabday laahaa hay. ||4||
Those who remain absorbed in the Guru’s divine word are totally detached from the worldly bond; the eternal Naam is their real profit in life. ||4||
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਵੱਡੇ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਹਨ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਹੀ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਅਸਲ) ਖੱਟੀ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਖੱਟੀ ਖੱਟਦੇ ਹਨ) ॥੪॥
ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਰਤੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
dukh sukh kartai Dhur likh paa-i-aa.
The Creator has preordained people with sorrow and pleasure based on their deeds.
ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਦੁੱਖ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਖ (ਭੋਗਣਾ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਲਿਖ ਕੇ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਾਇਆ ॥
doojaa bhaa-o aap vartaa-i-aa.
The love of duality (Maya) has also been propagated by the Creator Himself.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਵਰਤਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਅਲਿਪਤੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਵੇਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
gurmukh hovai so alipato vartai manmukh kaa ki-aa vaysaahaa hay. ||5||
One who follows the Guru’s teachings remains detached from the love of materialism, but how can a self-willed person be trusted? ||5||
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ) ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ; ਪਰ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਇਤਬਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ॥੫॥
ਸੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਜੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ॥
say manmukh jo sabad na pachhaaneh.
Those who do not understand the Guru’s divine word are the self-willed.
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦੇ, ਉਹ ਮਨਮੱਤੀਏ ਹਨ,
ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਭੈ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ॥
gur kay bhai kee saar na jaaneh.
They do not know the worth of the revered fear of the Guru.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ।
ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਉ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਮੁ ਕਾਢਿ ਲਏਗਾ ਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
bhai bin ki-o nirbha-o sach paa-ee-ai jam kaadh la-aygaa saahaa hay. ||6||
How can one realize the fear-free eternal God without the revered fear of God, when one always remains under the fear of the demon of death? ||6||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ , (ਸਦਾ ਇਹ ਸਹਮ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ) ਜਮਰਾਜ ਕਦੋਂ ਆ ਕੇ ਜਿੰਦ ਕੱਢ ਲਏਗਾ ॥੬॥
ਅਫਰਿਓ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
afri-o jam maari-aa na jaa-ee.
The uncontrollable demon (fear) of death cannot be conquered.
ਜਮਰਾਜ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਜਮਰਾਜ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥
gur kai sabday nayrh na aa-ee.
But by reflecting on the Guru’s word, the fear of death does not come near.
ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ (ਜਮਰਾਜ ਦਾ ਸਹਮ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁਕਦਾ।
ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣੇ ਤਾ ਦੂਰਹੁ ਭਾਗੈ ਮਤੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
sabad sunay taa Dhoorahu bhaagai mat maaray har jee-o vayparvaahaa hay. ||7||
When the demon of death hears the Guru’s word, he runs far away, lest the carefree God may punish him for bothering His devotee. ||7||
ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਦੂਰੋਂ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਭੱਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ,ਮਤਾਂ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਇਸ ਖੁਨਾਮੀ ਦੀ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਹੀ ਨ ਦੇਵੇ ॥੭॥
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਕੀ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਸਿਰਕਾਰਾ ॥
har jee-o kee hai sabh sirkaaraa.
The entire creation (including the demon of death) is under God’s command.
ਸਾਰੀ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ (ਜਮਰਾਜ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਰਈਅਤ ਹੈ),
ਏਹੁ ਜਮੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ॥
ayhu jam ki-aa karay vichaaraa.
What can this helpless demon of death do (against the will of God)?
(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਜਮਰਾਜ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਬੰਦਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਕਢਦਾ ਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
hukmee bandaa hukam kamaavai hukmay kadh-daa saahaa hay. ||8||
The demon of death is also under God’s command; when he takes away someone’s breath, he carries out the divine command ||8||
ਜਮਰਾਜ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਕੱਢਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਕੀਆ ਅਕਾਰਾ ॥
gurmukh saachai kee-aa akaaraa.
A Guru’s follower understands that the eternal God has created the universe.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥
gurmukh pasri-aa sabh paasaaraa.
A Guru’s follower knows that God has expanded the entire expanse.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਹੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ-ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਖਿਲਾਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
gurmukh hovai so sach boojhai sabad sachai sukh taahaa hay. ||9||
One who follows the Guru’s teachings, realizes the eternal God; he enjoys inner peace through the divine word of God’s praises. ||9||
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਕਰਮਿ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥
gurmukh jaataa karam biDhaataa.
The Guru’s follower, through the Guru’s grace realizes God, the creator.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ) ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਨਾਲ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
