ਕਲਰ ਖੇਤੀ ਤਰਵਰ ਕੰਠੇ ਬਾਗਾ ਪਹਿਰਹਿ ਕਜਲੁ ਝਰੈ ॥
kalar khaytee tarvar kanthay baagaa pahirahi kajal jharai.
Just as no crop is expected to grow in a saline field, a tree on the river bank is not expected to survive for long, and a person wearing white clothes does not remain unstained where black soot is blowing,
ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੱਲਰ ਵਿਚ ਖੇਤੀ ਬੀਜ ਕੇ ਫ਼ਸਲ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ, ਦਰਿਆ ਕੰਢੇ ਉੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਰੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਸਰਾ ਬਨਾਣਾ ਭੁੱਲ ਹੈ, ਜਿਥੇ ਕਾਲਖ ਉਡ ਉਡ ਕੇ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੋਵੇ ਉਥੇ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਚਿੱਟੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਹਿਨਦੇ ਹਨ (ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਕਾਲਖ ਨਾਹ ਲੱਗਣ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਭੁੱਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ),
ਏਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਕੀ ਕੋਠੀ ਜੋ ਪੈਸੈ ਸੋ ਗਰਬਿ ਜਰੈ ॥੬॥
ayhu sansaar tisai kee kothee jo paisai so garab jarai. ||6||
similarly this world is like a room filled with the fire of worldly desire, whosoever falls in it, gets spiritually burnt in egotism. ||6||
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਕੋਠੀ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ (ਗ਼ਰਕ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ-ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ) ਸੜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਰਯਤਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਕਹਾ ਸਬਾਏ ਦੁਹੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੋ ਜਾਸੀ ॥
ra-yat raajay kahaa sabaa-ay duhu antar so jaasee.
Just as all those kings and their subjects are gone, whosoever is present in this world now, will also depart.
ਰਾਜੇ ਤੇ (ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ) ਪਰਜਾ-ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਹਨ? (ਸਭ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਾਰੀ ਕੂਚ ਕਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ)। ਇਸ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ ਜੋ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਅੰਤ ਇਥੋਂ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਹਤ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਚੇ ਕੀ ਪਉੜੀ ਰਹਸੀ ਅਲਖੁ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ॥੭॥੩॥੧੧॥
kahat naanak gur sachay kee pa-orhee rahsee alakh nivaasee. ||7||3||11||
Nanak says, the True Guru’s teachings tell us that the incomprehensible God is eternal. ||7||3||11||
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਦੀਵੀ ਸਥਿਰ ਹੈ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ॥੭॥੩॥੧੧॥

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad.
One eternal God, realized by the grace of the true Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
jis no paraym man vasaa-ay.
One in whose mind God enshrines His love,
(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਆਪਣਾ) ਪਿਆਰ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥
saachai sabad sahj subhaa-ay.
that person remains spiritually stable and focused on God’s praises.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ), ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ (ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ)
ਏਹਾ ਵੇਦਨ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਕਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਕਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
ayhaa vaydan so-ee jaanai avar ke jaanai kaaree jee-o. ||1||
Such a person alone knows the pangs of this love and its cure; who else can know about it? ||1||
ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਪੀੜ ਨੂੰ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਇਲਾਜ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਦੇ ਇਲਾਜ ਬਾਰੇ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਕੀ ਜਾਣ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲੇ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
aapay maylay aap milaa-ay.
God on His own unites a person with Himself,
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ (ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਆਪਣਾ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਆਪੇ ਲਾਏ ॥
aapnaa pi-aar aapay laa-ay.
He Himself imbues one with His love.
(ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਆਪਣਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
paraym kee saar so-ee jaanai jis no nadar tumaaree jee-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ God, he alone realizes the worth of Your love upon whom, You bestow Your grace. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਤੇਰੇ) ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ (ਭੀ) ਉਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਜਾਣ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਦਿਬ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਜਾਗੈ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥
dib darisat jaagai bharam chukaa-ay.
One in whom, God enshrines His love in the form of divine light, the source of wisdom awakens in him which removes all doubt,
(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਜਾਗ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਉਸ ਦੀ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
gur parsaad param pad paa-ay.
and by Guru’s grace, he achieves the supreme spiritual state.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ (ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਦਰਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੋ ਜੋਗੀ ਇਹ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥
so jogee ih jugat pachhaanai gur kai sabad beechaaree jee-o. ||2||
The person who achieves this technique of life is a true ascetic, and by reflecting on the Guru’s word, he comes to know of high spiritual life. ||2||
(ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਇਸ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਸਹੀ ਅਰਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਜੋਗੀ ਹੈ; ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਉੱਚੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਧਨ ਪਿਰ ਮੇਲਾ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
sanjogee Dhan pir maylaa hovai.
If by some good fortune, a soul-bride gets united with her Husband-God,
ਚੰਗੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਖੋਵੈ ॥
gurmat vichahu durmat khovai.
by following Guru’s teachings, she sheds off her evil-mindedness from within,
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਉੱਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਖੋਟੀ ਮੱਤ ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਰੰਗ ਸਿਉ ਨਿਤ ਰਲੀਆ ਮਾਣੈ ਅਪਣੇ ਕੰਤ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥
rang si-o nit ralee-aa maanai apnay kant pi-aaree jee-o. ||3||
and with loving adoration, she always enjoys the pleasure of spiritual union with Him and becomes His beloved. ||3||
ਤੇ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦਾ ਸਦਕਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦੀ ਲਾਡਲੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਵੈਦੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
satgur baajhahu vaid na ko-ee.
There is no healer other than the true Guru who can cure the pangs of divine love,
(ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੀ ਚੋਭ ਦਾ ਇਲਾਜ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ) ਹਕੀਮ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
aapay aap niranjan so-ee.
(because it is only the Guru who makes one realize that the immaculate God is pervading everywhere all by Himself.
(ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਇਲਾਜ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਦਿੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਉਹ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ)।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਮਰੈ ਮੰਦਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਗਿਆਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥
satgur mili-ai marai mandaa hovai gi-aan beechaaree jee-o. ||4||
Upon meeting the true Guru, the evil within a person vanishes and he becomes able to think about spiritual life. ||4||
ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਭੈੜ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਚੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਜੋਗਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਏਹੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਲਾਏ ॥
ayhu sabad saar jis no laa-ay.
Those, in whom God enshrines this divine word of the Guru,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
gurmukh tarisnaa bhukh gavaa-ay.
God removes all that person’s craving and yearning for worldly pleasures by making him follow the Guru’s teachings.
(ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਾ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਣ ਲੀਆ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਲ ਧਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੫॥
aapan lee-aa kichhoo na paa-ee-ai kar kirpaa kal Dhaaree jee-o. ||5||
However, we don’t achieve anything by our own efforts; it is only when showing His mercy, God bestows His power that we achieve success. ||5||
ਆਪਣੀ ਅਕਲ ਦੇ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕੀਦਾ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਸੱਤਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਅਗਮ ਨਿਗਮੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
agam nigam satguroo dikhaa-i-aa.
A person, whom the true Guru has revealed the essence of the Vedas and the Shastras (scriptures),
ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਵਿਖਾਲ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ,
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਅਪਨੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
kar kirpaa apnai ghar aa-i-aa.
by the Guru’s grace, he has come to his real home (his heart).
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਜਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਜਾਤਾ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੬॥
anjan maahi niranjan jaataa jin ka-o nadar tumaaree jee-o. ||6||
O’ God, those on whom You bestow mercy, realize You, the immaculate one, amidst this world full of evils. ||6||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਪਛਾਣ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੬॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋ ਤਤੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
gurmukh hovai so tat paa-ay.
A person who becomes a Guru’s follower, realizes this reality,
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਇਹ) ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
aapnaa aap vichahu gavaa-ay.
and he sheds off self-conceit from within.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਧੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਮਨਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੭॥
satgur baajhahu sabh DhanDh kamaavai vaykhhu man veechaaree jee-o. ||7||
O’ friend, you can reflect and see for yourself that without following the true Guru’s teachings, the entire world is running after worldly pursuits. ||7||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲੈ ਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਹੀ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਇਕਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
ik bharam bhoolay fireh ahaNkaaree.
Some are deluded by doubt and are running around egotistically,
ਸੰਦੇਹ ਦੇ ਭਟਕਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਕਈ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿੰਚ ਆਕੜੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਇਕਨਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੀ ॥
iknaa gurmukh ha-umai maaree.
while there are others who have eradicated their egy by the Guru’s grace.
ਕਈ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲਈ ਹੈ।
ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਹੋਰਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲੇ ਗਾਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੮॥
sachai sabad ratay bairaagee hor bharam bhulay gaavaaree jee-o. ||8||
The ones who are imbued with the Guru’s word of God’s praises, are the truly detached ones; all other ignorant ones are simply lost in doubt. ||8||
ਅਸਲ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਉਹ ਹਨ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਬਾਕੀ ਦੇ ਮੂਰਖ (ਆਪਣੇ ਤਿਆਗ ਦੇ) ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ॥੮॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
gurmukh jinee naam na paa-i-aa. manmukh birthaa janam gavaa-i-aa.
Those self-willed persons who did not follow the Guru’s teachings and did not attain the wealth of Naam, have simply wasted their valuable life.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਮੁਰੀਦਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾ ਲਈ ਹੈ।
ਅਗੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਬੇਲੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਬੂਝੈ ਗੁਰ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੯॥
agai vin naavai ko baylee naahee boojhai gur beechaaree jee-o. ||9||
In the world hereafter, except for Naam, there is no other support; only a rare person realizes this by reflecting on the Guru’s word. ||9||
ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਸਹਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਹੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥
amrit naam sadaa sukh-daata.
The ambrosial nectar of Naam is the provider of spiritual bliss forever.
ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
gur poorai jug chaaray jaataa.
It is being realized through the perfect Guru throughout the four ages.
ਚੌਹਾਂ ਯੁੱਗਾਂ ਅਦੰਰ, ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਂਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਪਾਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੧੦॥੧॥
jis too dayveh so-ee paa-ay naanak tat beechaaree jee-o. ||10||1||
O’ God, Nanak has realized this reality, that only that person receives it, whom You bless with it. ||10||1||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਹੀ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੇ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ। ॥੧੦॥੧॥
