ਕਿਤੀ ਚਖਉ ਸਾਡੜੇ ਕਿਤੀ ਵੇਸ ਕਰੇਉ ॥
kitee chakha-o saadrhay kitee vays karay-o.
No matter how many delicious dishes I may taste, and no matter how many expensive dresses I may wear,
ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਸੁਆਦਲੇ ਖਾਣੇ ਖਾਂਦੀ ਰਹਾਂ, ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਪਹਿਰਾਵੇ ਕਰਦੀ ਰਹਾਂ,
ਪਿਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਬਾਦਿ ਗਇਅਮੁ ਵਾਢੀ ਝੂਰੇਦੀ ਝੂਰੇਉ ॥੫॥
pir bin joban baad ga-i-am vaadhee jhooraydee jhooray-o. ||5||
even then, not being with my Husband-God, my life is going waste and as long as I am deserted, I am bound to spend my days in remorse. ||5||
ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਛੁੜ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਵਾਨੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਜਦ ਤਕ ਮੈਂ ਛੁੱਟੜ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਝੁਰ ਝੁਰ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਦਿਨ ਕੱਟਾਂਗੀ ॥੫॥
ਸਚੇ ਸੰਦਾ ਸਦੜਾ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
sachay sandaa sad-rhaa sunee-ai gur veechaar.
If we listen to the message of the Almighty by reflecting on the Guru’s word,
ਜੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ-ਸੁਨੇਹਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸੁਣੀਏ,
ਸਚੇ ਸਚਾ ਬੈਹਣਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥੬॥
sachay sachaa baihnaa nadree nadar pi-aar. ||6||
then we are forever in God’s presence and as He looks at us with a glance of grace, divine love wells up in us. ||6||
ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਸਾਥ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਾਲ ਤੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਦੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਗਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਸਚ ਕਾ ਡੇਖੈ ਡੇਖਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
gi-aanee anjan sach kaa daykhai daykhanhaar.
The spiritually wise person applies the ointment of truth to his eyes, and receives the blessed vision of God, who is capable of supporting everybody.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੁਰਮਾ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ॥੭॥
gurmukh boojhai jaanee-ai ha-umai garab nivaar. ||7||
By following the Guru’s teachings one who eradicates his ego understands this secret. ||7||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਉਮੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਇਸ ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ) ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਤਉ ਭਾਵਨਿ ਤਉ ਜੇਹੀਆ ਮੂ ਜੇਹੀਆ ਕਿਤੀਆਹ ॥
ta-o bhaavan ta-o jayhee-aa moo jayhee-aa kitee-aah.
O’ Beloved God, those soul-brides who are pleasing to You, become (virtuous) like You; on the other hand, there are many like me, who keep wandering.
ਹੇ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜੇਹੜੀਆਂ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੀਆਂ ਲੱਗਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਰਗੀਆਂ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਮੇਰੇ ਵਰਗੀਆਂ ਭੀ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਰੁਲਦੀਆਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਹੁ ਨ ਵੀਛੁੜੈ ਤਿਨ ਸਚੈ ਰਤੜੀਆਹ ॥੮॥੧॥੯॥
naanak naahu na veechhurhai tin sachai rat-rhee-aah. ||8||1||9||
O’ Nanak, the soul-brides who are imbued with the love of the eternal God, are never separated from the Husband-God. ||8||1||9||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇਹੜੀਆਂ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀਆਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਛੁੜਦਾ ॥੮॥੧॥੯॥

Raag Maaroo, First Guru:
ਨਾ ਭੈਣਾ ਭਰਜਾਈਆ ਨਾ ਸੇ ਸਸੁੜੀਆਹ ॥
naa bhainaa bharjaa-ee-aa naa say sasurhee-aah.
The relationships with our sisters or sisters-in-laws or mothers-in-laws does not last forever.
ਨਾਹ ਭੈਣਾਂ ਨਾਹ ਭਰਜਾਈਆਂ ਨਾਹ ਸੱਸਾਂ-ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਭੀ ਉਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਸਾਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੋ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹੇ l
ਸਚਾ ਸਾਕੁ ਨ ਤੁਟਈ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਸਹੀਆਹ ॥੧॥
sachaa saak na tut-ee gur maylay sahee-aas. ||1||
The Guru unites with God-loving friends, this true relationship with these friends never breaks. ||1||
ਗੁਰੂ (ਸਤ ਸੰਗੀ-) ਸਹੇਲੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਸਤਸੰਗੀਆਂ ਵਾਲਾ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਾਕ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਟੁੱਟਦਾ ॥੧॥
ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥
balihaaree gur aapnay sad balihaarai jaa-o.
I am dedicated to my Guru; I am dedicated to him forever,
ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਹਾਂ, ਸਦਾ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹਾਂ,
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਏਤਾ ਭਵਿ ਥਕੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਪਿਰੁ ਮੇਲਿਮੁ ਦਿਤਮੁ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur bin aytaa bhav thakee gur pir maylim ditam milaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
because, I was exhausted wandering without the Guru and now the Guru has united me with my beloved Husband-God. ||1||Pause||
ਕਿਓਂਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈਂ ਭੌਂ ਭੌਂ ਕੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਥੱਕ ਗਈ ਸਾਂ, ਹੁਣ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਤੀ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਫੁਫੀ ਨਾਨੀ ਮਾਸੀਆ ਦੇਰ ਜੇਠਾਨੜੀਆਹ ॥
fufee naanee maasee-aa dayr jaythaanrhee-aah.
Our paternal and maternal aunts, grandmothers, and wives of younger and older brothers-in-law,
ਫੁੱਫੀਆਂ, ਨਾਨੀਆਂ, ਮਾਸੀਆਂ, ਦਿਰਾਣੀਆਂ, ਜਿਠਾਣੀਆਂ,
ਆਵਨਿ ਵੰਞਨਿ ਨਾ ਰਹਨਿ ਪੂਰ ਭਰੇ ਪਹੀਆਹ ॥੨॥
aavan vanjan naa rahan poor bharay pahee-aah. ||2||
come and go like boat loads of passengers, and do not stay with us. ||2||
ਇਹ (ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ) ਆਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਚਲੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਸਦਾ (ਸਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ) ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਰਾਹੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਪੂਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ॥੨॥
ਮਾਮੇ ਤੈ ਮਾਮਾਣੀਆ ਭਾਇਰ ਬਾਪ ਨ ਮਾਉ ॥
maamay tai maamaanee-aa bhaa-ir baap na maa-o.
The relationships with our maternal uncles and aunts, brothers, father, and mother, does not last forever either.
ਮਾਮੇ, ਮਾਮੀਆਂ, ਭਰਾ, ਪਿਉ, ਤੇ ਮਾਂ-ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਭੀ ਸੱਚਾ ਸਾਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਸਾਥ ਲਡੇ ਤਿਨ ਨਾਠੀਆ ਭੀੜ ਘਣੀ ਦਰੀਆਉ ॥੩॥
saath laday tin naathee-aa bheerh ghanee daree-aa-o. ||3||
Our relationships with them are like those guests who have boarded the ship of life’s journey with us out of the big crowd at the worldly river bank. ||3||
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪਰਾਹੁਣਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਫ਼ਲੇ ਦੇ ਕਾਫ਼ਲੇ ਲੱਦੇ ਚਲੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਦਰੀਆ ਦੇ ਪੱਤਣ ਉਤੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਭੀੜ ਲੱਗੀ ਪਈ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਸਾਚਉ ਰੰਗਿ ਰੰਗਾਵਲੋ ਸਖੀ ਹਮਾਰੋ ਕੰਤੁ ॥
saacha-o rang rangaavlo sakhee hamaaro kant.
O’ my friends, only our Husband-God is eternal and He remains imbued with the true color of love.
ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀਹੋ! ਸਾਡਾ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚਿ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਨਾ ਥੀਐ ਸੋ ਸਹੁ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਵੰਤੁ ॥੪॥
sach vichhorhaa naa thee-ai so saho rang ravant. ||4||
The soul-bride, who remains imbued with God’s love, is never separated from Him, and He unites her with Him. ||4||
ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਉਸ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ। (ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ) ਉਹ ਖਸਮ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਗਲੇ ਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਸਭੇ ਰੁਤੀ ਚੰਗੀਆ ਜਿਤੁ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ॥
sabhay rutee changee-aa jit sachay si-o nayhu.
All those seasons are auspicious in which the soul-bride is imbued with the eternal God.
ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਰੁੱਤਾਂ ਚੰਗੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਜਿਸ ਰੁੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ|
ਸਾ ਧਨ ਕੰਤੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਸੁਖਿ ਸੁਤੀ ਨਿਸਿ ਡੇਹੁ ॥੫॥
saa Dhan kant pachhaani-aa sukh sutee nis dayhu. ||5||
The soul-bride, who gets to know her Husband-God, remains at peace day and night. ||5||
ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਸਾਕ) ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਪੂਰਨ ਆਨੰਦ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ-ਚਿੱਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਪਤਣਿ ਕੂਕੇ ਪਾਤਣੀ ਵੰਞਹੁ ਧ੍ਰੁਕਿ ਵਿਲਾੜਿ ॥
patan kookay paat-nee vanjahu Dharuk vilaarh.
Standing at the shore of the world-river, a boatman (the Guru) is loudly calling us to run and jump into his ship of Naam and cross over.
(ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਦਰੀਆ ਦੇ) ਪੱਤਣ ਉਤੇ (ਖਲੋਤਾ) ਗੁਰੂ-ਮਲਾਹ (ਜੀਵ-ਰਾਹੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪੁਕਾਰ ਕੇ ਕਹਿ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਵਿਚ ਚੜ੍ਹੋ ਤੇ) ਦੌੜ ਕੇ ਛਾਲ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਵੋ।
ਪਾਰਿ ਪਵੰਦੜੇ ਡਿਠੁ ਮੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬੋਹਿਥਿ ਚਾੜਿ ॥੬॥
paar pavand-rhay dith mai satgur bohith chaarh. ||6||
I, Nanak, have personally seen them cross over the world-river who boarded the true Guru’s ship of Naam. ||6||
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਵਿਚ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਦਰੀਆ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਅੱਪੜੇ ਹੋਏ (ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ) ਮੈਂ (ਆਪ) ਵੇਖੇ ਹਨ ॥੬॥
ਹਿਕਨੀ ਲਦਿਆ ਹਿਕਿ ਲਦਿ ਗਏ ਹਿਕਿ ਭਾਰੇ ਭਰ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
hiknee ladi-aa hik lad ga-ay hik bhaaray bhar naal.
Some have carried the load of Naam and some have crossed over the worldly river, but some with heavy baggage of sins have drowned.
ਕਈਆਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਵੱਖਰ ਲੱਦ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਕਈ ਟੁਰ ਗਏ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਕਈ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਭਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਬੋਝਲ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।
ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਵਣੰਜਿਆ ਸੇ ਸਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੭॥
jinee sach vananji-aa say sachay parabh naal. ||7||
Those who have bought the everlasting commodity of Naam, have merged with the eternal God. ||7||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਵੱਖਰ ਖ਼ਰੀਦਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ) ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ ॥੭॥
ਨਾ ਹਮ ਚੰਗੇ ਆਖੀਅਹ ਬੁਰਾ ਨ ਦਿਸੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
naa ham changay aakhee-aah buraa na disai ko-ay.
We should not think that we are better than others; in fact we should not think that anybody is worse than us.
ਸਾਂਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਰਖਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ (ਸਭ ਤੋਂ) ਚੰਗੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਖੇ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ, ਤੇ ਸਾਥੋਂ ਭੈੜਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੀਐ ਸਚੇ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਸੋਇ ॥੮॥੨॥੧੦॥
naanak ha-umai maaree-ai sachay jayhrhaa so-ay. ||8||2||10||
O’ Nanak, we should eradicate our ego; one who does so, becomes like the eternal God. ||8||2||10||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ-ਮਿਕ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕੀਤੀ) ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੀ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ॥੮॥੨॥੧੦॥

Raag Maaroo, First Guru:
ਨਾ ਜਾਣਾ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹੈ ਕੋਈ ਨਾ ਜਾਣਾ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥
naa jaanaa moorakh hai ko-ee naa jaanaa si-aanaa.
O’ God! I neither consider anyone a fool nor wise.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਅਕਲਮੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ, ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਮੂੜ੍ਹ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਸਦਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੈ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਾਤਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣਾ ॥੧॥
sadaa saahib kai rangay raataa an-din naam vakhaanaa. ||1||
Being imbued with the love of my Master-God forever, I always keep remembering Him with adoration. ||1||
ਮੈਂ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥
ਬਾਬਾ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹਾ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
baabaa moorakh haa naavai bal jaa-o.
O’ God, without meditating on Your Name, I remain spiritually ignorant; I am dedicated to Naam.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ। (ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ) ਮੈਂ ਮੱਤ-ਹੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ l
ਤੂ ਕਰਤਾ ਤੂ ਦਾਨਾ ਬੀਨਾ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਤਰਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
too kartaa too daanaa beenaa tayrai naam taraa-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
You are the Creator of this world, You are wise and farsighted; I can cross over the worldly ocean of vices by meditating on Your Name. ||1||Pause||
ਤੂੰ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਤੇ ਦੂਰ ਅੰਦੇਸ਼ ਹੈਂ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਮੂਰਖੁ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਏਕ ਜੋਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਨਾਉ ॥
moorakh si-aanaa ayk hai ayk jot du-ay naa-o.
Both a fool and a wise person are in reality the image of the same God, but they are being called by two different names.
ਅਕਲਮੰਦ ਅਤੇ ਬੇਸਮਝ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਸਮਾਨ ਹਨ। ਅੰਦਰਲਾ ਨੂਰ ਇੱਕ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਭਾਵੇਂ ਵੱਖਰੇ ਵੱਖਰੇ ਵੇਲਿਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਵੱਖਰੇ ਹਨ।
ਮੂਰਖਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹੈ ਜਿ ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਾਉ ॥੨॥
moorkhaa sir moorakh hai je mannay naahee naa-o. ||2||
However, that person is the greatest fool, who doesn’t believe in lovingly remembering the Name of God. ||2||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਆਦਮੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਬੂਲਦਾ, ਉਹ ਮਹਾ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਗੁਰ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਲੈ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
gur du-aarai naa-o paa-ee-ai bin satgur palai na paa-ay.
It is only by becoming Guru’s follower, that we attain Naam and without following the true Guru, we cannot be blessed with it.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਤਾ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੩॥
satgur kai bhaanai man vasai taa ahinis rahai liv laa-ay. ||3||
If by obeying the command of the true Guru, Naam is enshrined in the mind, then day and night, one remains attuned to God. ||3||
ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਮ ਵੱਸ ਪਏ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਰਾਜੰ ਰੰਗੰ ਰੂਪੰ ਮਾਲੰ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਤੇ ਜੂਆਰੀ ॥
raajaN rangaN roopaN maalaN joban tay joo-aaree.
Those who remain busy running after power, worldly pleasures, beauty, possessions, and youth alone, consider them like gamblers.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਰਾਜ, ਰੰਗ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ, ਰੂਪ, ਮਾਲ-ਧਨ ਤੇ ਜਵਾਨੀ-ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਹੀ ਵਿਹਾਝਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੁਆਰੀਏ ਸਮਝੋ।
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਬਾਧੇ ਪਾਸੈ ਖੇਲਹਿ ਚਉਪੜਿ ਏਕਾ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
hukmee baaDhay paasai khayleh cha-uparh aykaa saaree. ||4||
Bound by God’s command, they keep conducting their life like a chess-board with dice of worldly desires.||4||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਉਹ ਚਉਪੜ ਖੇਡ ਖੇਡਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਕੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਰਦ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਜਗਿ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣਾ ਨਾਉ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਹਿ ਗਾਵਾਰੀ ॥
jag chatur si-aanaa bharam bhulaanaa naa-o pandit parheh gaavaaree.
One, who is lost in the illusion of worldly desires is deemed as smart and wise in the world; even those who call themselves Pundits are educated fools.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਚਾਤੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ; ਪਰ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ‘ਪੰਡਿਤ ਸਦਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ‘ ਉਹ ਪੜੇ ਲਿਖੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਉ ਵਿਸਾਰਹਿ ਬੇਦੁ ਸਮਾਲਹਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਭੂਲੇ ਲੇਖਾਰੀ ॥੫॥
naa-o visaareh bayd samaaleh bikh bhoolay laykhaaree. ||5||
Forsaking Naam, they claim to contemplate on Vedas, but in reality, even the writers of such books are lost in amassing the poison of worldly wealth. ||5||
(ਇਹ ਪੰਡਿਤ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ; ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਲੋਂ ਵੇਦ (ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ,ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਲਿਖਾਰੀ ਵੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਭੁੱਲੇ ਪਏ ਹਨ ॥੫॥
