ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਨ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਪੂਅਰ ਤਾਪੈ ॥
antar agan na gur bin boojhai baahar poo-ar taapai.
Without following the Guru’s teachings, his inner fire of worldly desires is not extinguished, but he burns fire outside (to ward off the evils).
ਆਪਣੇ ਵਲੋਂ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਬਣੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ (ਬਲਦੀ) ਅੱਗ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਬੁੱਝਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਪਰ ਬਾਹਰ ਧੂਣੀਆਂ ਤਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵੀ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਚੀਨਸਿ ਆਪੈ ॥
gur sayvaa bin bhagat na hovee ki-o kar cheenas aapai.
But without following the Guru’s teachings, devotional worship of God cannot be performed; so how can he see his own spiritual self?
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਹੋ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ (ਇਹ ਮਨਮੁਖ) ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਪਛਾਣੇ?
ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਨਰਕ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਆਤਮ ਜਾਪੈ ॥
nindaa kar kar narak nivaasee antar aatam jaapai.
Because of the darkness of spiritual ignorance within, he is slandering family life and living in hell.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਬੇਸਮਝੀ ਦਾ ਗੂੜ੍ਹਾ ਅਨ੍ਹੇਰਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਧਰਮ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਨਰਕੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਿਤੀਤ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਭਰਮਿ ਵਿਗੂਚਹਿ ਕਿਉ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਪੈ ਪਾਪੈ ॥੩॥
athsath tirath bharam vigoocheh ki-o mal Dhopai paapai. ||3||
Even by roaming about the sixty eight holy places, he only ruins himself, how can he wash off the dirt of sins by such ritualistic ablutions. ||3||
ਅਠਾਹਠ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਭੌਂ ਕੇ ਭੀ (ਮਨਮੁਖ ਤਿਆਗੀ) ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਨਾਲ) ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਧੁਪ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ? ॥੩॥
ਛਾਣੀ ਖਾਕੁ ਬਿਭੂਤ ਚੜਾਈ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮਗੁ ਜੋਹੈ ॥
chhaanee khaak bibhoot charhaa-ee maa-i-aa kaa mag johai.
(To impress others) he sifts dust, and smears his body with ashes, but he keeps thinking about ways to get worldly wealth.
(ਲੋਕ-ਵਿਖਾਵੇ ਲਈ) ਸੁਆਹ ਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਸੁਆਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿੰਡੇ ਉਤੇ ਮਲ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ (ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਤੱਕਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਕੋਈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤੀ ਦਾਨੀ ਆ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਭੇਟ ਕਰੇ)।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੇ ਤੇ ਛੋਹੈ ॥
antar baahar ayk na jaanai saach kahay tay chhohai.
He does not realize that both inside and outside there is one God and if someone points out this truth to him, he gets upset.
ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝ ਸਕਦਾ, (ਜੇ) ਇਹ ਸੱਚਾ ਵਾਕ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਖੀਏ ਤਾਂ ਖਿੱਝਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪਾਠੁ ਪੜੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠੋ ਬੋਲੈ ਨਿਗੁਰੇ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਓਹੈ ॥
paath parhai mukh jhootho bolai niguray kee mat ohai.
Even though he reads holy books he still tells lies, because being without the Guru, his perception remains the same as before.
(ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦਾ) ਪਾਠ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ (ਤਾਂ) ਹੈ ਪਰ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਝੂਠ ਹੀ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ-ਹੀਣ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਉਹ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਵਰਗੀ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਜ਼ਾਹਰਾ ਤਿਆਗ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ)।
ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪਈ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਉ ਸੋਹੈ ॥੪॥
naam na jap-ee ki-o sukh paavai bin naavai ki-o sohai. ||4||
How can he find peace when he does not meditate on the Name of God, and without Naam how can his life become virtuous? ||4||
ਜਦ ਤਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਪਦਾ ਤਦ ਤਕ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੁਚੱਜਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੪॥
ਮੂੰਡੁ ਮੁਡਾਇ ਜਟਾ ਸਿਖ ਬਾਧੀ ਮੋਨਿ ਰਹੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾ ॥
moond mudaa-ay jataa sikh baaDhee mon rahai abhimaanaa.
Some shave their heads, some keep their hair in matted tangles, while some others keep silent, filled with egotistical pride.
ਕੋਈ ਸਿਰ ਮੁਨਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕੋਈ ਜਟਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੂੜਾ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੋਨ ਧਾਰ ਕੇ ਬੈਠ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਬਣੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮਨੂਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਧਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਰਤ ਆਤਮ ਗਿਆਨਾ ॥
manoo-aa dolai dah dis Dhaavai bin rat aatam gi-aanaa.
But without love for God and divine wisdom, their minds waver and roam in all different directions for the love of Maya.
ਪਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਜਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਡੋਲਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ) ਦਸੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਦੌੜਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ॥
amrit chhod mahaa bikh peevai maa-i-aa kaa dayvaanaa.
Forsaking the nectar of ambrosial Naam, such a lover of worldly wealth, keeps drinking the most deadly poison of worldly desires.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ (ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰਕੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦਾ ਉਹ) ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਮੁਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਪਸੂਆ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥੫॥
kirat na mit-ee hukam na boojhai pasoo-aa maahi samaanaa. ||5||
Because of the previous deeds, his destiny cannot be erased; even after becoming a recluse, he does not realize God’s will and keeps behaving like an animal. ||5||
(ਪਰ ਇਸ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੇ ਕੀਹ ਵੱਸ?) ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਕੱਠ (ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮੁੱਕਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਸਰ ਹੇਠ ਜੀਵ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝ ਸਕਦਾ, (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ, ਤਿਆਗੀ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਭੀ) ਪਸ਼ੂ-ਸੁਭਾਵ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਹਾਥ ਕਮੰਡਲੁ ਕਾਪੜੀਆ ਮਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਉਪਜੀ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
haath kamandal kaaprhee-aa man tarisnaa upjee bhaaree.
He wears a patched coat and holds a begging bowl but still has a strong desire for worldly attachments.
ਉਹ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਪੀ ਫੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਲੀਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਚੋਲਾ ਪਹਿਨ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਾਰੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਤਜਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਮਿ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
istaree taj kar kaam vi-aapi-aa chit laa-i-aa par naaree.
He abandons his own wife, but afflicted with lust he thinks of the wives of others.
ਆਪਣੀ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਆਏ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸਨਾ ਨੇ ਆ ਦਬਾਇਆ, ਤਾਂ ਪਰਾਈਆਂ ਨਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਿਖ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੈ ਲੰਪਟੁ ਹੈ ਬਾਜਾਰੀ ॥
sikh karay kar sabad na cheenai lampat hai baajaaree.
He preaches others but he himself doesn’t reflect on the Guru’s word; such a person is a street clown.
ਚੇਲੇ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ, ਤੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਜ਼ਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮਸਖ਼ਰਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਨਿਭਰਾਤੀ ਤਾ ਜਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰੀ ॥੬॥
antar bikh baahar nibhraatee taa jam karay khu-aaree. ||6||
Within him is the poison of evil impulses, but he pretends to be calm; the demon of death punishes such a hypocrite. ||6||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦਾ) ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਹੈ, ਬਾਹਰ (ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਖਾਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਧਾਰਨ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ। (ਅਜੇਹੇ ਪਖੰਡੀ ਨੂੰ) ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ-ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਸੋ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
so sani-aasee jo satgur sayvai vichahu aap gavaa-ay.
He alone is a true ascetic who sheds his self-conceit from within and follows the true Guru’s teachings.
ਅਸਲ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਉਹ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਛਾਦਨ ਭੋਜਨ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਨ ਕਰਈ ਅਚਿੰਤੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ॥
chhaadan bhojan kee aas na kar-ee achint milai so paa-ay.
He does not expect any food or clothing from others and whatever he gets without asking is what he gladly accepts.
(ਲੋਕਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਕੱਪੜੇ ਤੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਬਣਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦਾ, ਸਹਿਜ ਸੁਭਾਇ ਜੋ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਲੈ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਕੈ ਨ ਬੋਲੈ ਖਿਮਾ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹੈ ਤਾਮਸੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
bakai na bolai khimaa Dhan sangrahai taamas naam jalaa-ay.
He does not brag or talk unnecessarily, gathers the wealth of compassion and by lovingly meditating on Naam, he burns off his vices such as anger etc.
ਬਹੁਤ ਵਧ-ਘਟ ਬੋਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ, ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਵਧੀਕੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਹਾਰਨ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ-ਰੂਪ ਧਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਸਾੜ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਧਨੁ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਜੋਗੀ ਜਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥੭॥
Dhan girhee sani-aasee jogee je har charnee chit laa-ay. ||7||
Blessed is such a householder, ascetic or a yogi, who focuses his mind to God’s Name. ||7||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਚਾਹੇ ਉਹ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤੀ ਹੈ ਚਾਹੇ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਹੈ ਚਾਹੇ ਜੋਗੀ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸ ਰਹੈ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਏਕਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
aas niraas rahai sani-aasee aykas si-o liv laa-ay.
A true ascetic remains free from worldly desires and remains attuned to God.
ਅਸਲ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਉਹ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮਾਇਕ ਆਸਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਨਿਰਾਸ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਤਾ ਸਾਤਿ ਆਵੈ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਏ ॥
har ras peevai taa saat aavai nij ghar taarhee laa-ay.
He feels at peace only when he drinks the nectar of God’s Name, and focuses on God dwelling within his own heart.
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਮਨੂਆ ਨ ਡੋਲੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਧਾਵਤੁ ਵਰਜਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥
manoo-aa na dolai gurmukh boojhai Dhaavat varaj rahaa-ay.
When he understands the righteous way of life by following the Guru’s teachings, then his mind does not waver and he restrains his mind from wandering.
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਡੋਲਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਮਾਇਆ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਦੌੜਦੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਰੋਕ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਖੋਜੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੮॥
garihu sareer gurmatee khojay naam padaarath paa-ay. ||8||
Thus by following the Guru’s teachings, he searches his own heart, and attains the wealth of Naam. ||8||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਲੈ ਕੇ (ਜੰਗਲ ਭਾਲਣ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ) ਸਰੀਰ-ਘਰ ਨੂੰ ਖੋਜਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਸਰਮਾਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਸਰੇਸਟ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
barahmaa bisan mahays saraysat naam ratay veechaaree.
Even the gods like Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva are supreme and thoughtful only if they remain absorbed in Naam.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂੰ ਹੋਵੇ, ਸ਼ਿਵ ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਹੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਤਮ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀਜ ਕੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਬਣ ਗਏ।
ਖਾਣੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਗਗਨ ਪਤਾਲੀ ਜੰਤਾ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥
khaanee banee gagan pataalee jantaa jot tumaaree.
O’ God, even though your light is pervading in beings of all the sources of life and in their languages and in all the beings in the skies and nether regions,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਭਾਵੇਂ) ਚੌਹਾਂ ਖਾਣੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਬੋਲੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ, ਪਾਤਾਲ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਹੈ।
ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਮ ਧੁਨਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
sabh sukh mukat naam Dhun banee sach naam ur Dhaaree.
but only those are blessed with inner peace and liberation from vices who listen to the melody of the eternal Naam and keep it enshrined in their heart.
ਪਰ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰੌ ਜਾਰੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੀ ਤਰੁ ਤੂ ਤਾਰੀ ॥੯॥੭॥
naam binaa nahee chhootas naanak saachee tar too taaree. ||9||7||
O’ Nanak, no one is liberated without meditating on Naam; so ferry yourself across the worldly ocean of vices by riding the true boat of Naam. ||9||7||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ, ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਇਹੀ ਤਾਰੀ ਤਰ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਕਦੇ ਡੁੱਬਣ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਤਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ॥੯॥੭॥

ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੰਜੋਗਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਰਕਤੁ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਕਰੇ ॥
maat pitaa sanjog upaa-ay rakat bind mil pind karay.
Almighty creates the human beings by the union of mother and father; God creates the body by bringing together mother’s blood and father’s sperm.
ਮਾਂ ਤੇ ਪਿਉ ਦੇ (ਸਰੀਰਕ) ਸੰਜੋਗ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜੀਵ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਲਹੂ ਤੇ ਪਿਉ ਦਾ ਵੀਰਜ ਮਿਲਣ ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਜੀਵ ਦਾ) ਸਰੀਰ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗਰਭ ਉਰਧਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਰੇ ਦਾਤਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੧॥
antar garabh uraDh liv laagee so parabh saaray daat karay. ||1||
While being upside down in the womb, mortal’s mind remains attuned to God who takes care of him and provides him with nourishment. ||1||
ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਵਿਚ ਉਲਟੇ ਪਏ ਹੋਏ ਦੀ ਲਗਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਹਰ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਲੋੜ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਕਿਉ ਤਰੈ ॥
sansaar bhavjal ki-o tarai.
How can a mortal cross over the worldly ocean of vices?
(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਜੀਵ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਫਰਿਓ ਭਾਰੁ ਅਫਾਰੁ ਟਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmukh naam niranjan paa-ee-ai afri-o bhaar afaar tarai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
When one is blessed with the immaculate Naam by the Guru’s grace, the unbearable load of sins is removed.||1||Pause||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ, ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ-ਕਾਲਖ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਸ ਦਾ (ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਆਦਿਕ ਦਾ) ਅਸਹਿ ਭਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਗਏ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਮੈ ਬਉਰਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਉ ਹਰੇ ॥
tay gun visar ga-ay apraaDhee mai ba-uraa ki-aa kara-o haray.
O’ God, I am such a sinner that I have forgotten the favors which You did to me; I, the foolish one, do not know what to do now.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਨਹਗਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਉਹ ਉਪਕਾਰ ਭੁੱਲ ਗਏ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਝੱਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ ਹੁਣ ਕੀ ਕਰਾਂ।
ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਸਭੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਦਾਤਿ ਸਮਾਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੨॥
too daataa da-i-aal sabhai sir ahinis daat samaar karay. ||2||
But You are a merciful giver to all; day and night you keep bestowing gifts and keep taking care of all Your beings. ||2||
ਪਰ ਤੂੰ ਦਇਆ ਦਾ ਸੋਮਾ ਹੈਂ, ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ (ਰਾਖਾ) ਹੈਂ, ਤੇ ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ। ਦਇਆਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ) ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਲੈ ਜਗਿ ਜਨਮਿਆ ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਧਰੇ ॥
chaar padaarath lai jag janmi-aa siv saktee ghar vaas Dharay.
A mortal is born in the world with the objective of attaining the four cardinal boons, but he remains entangled in the love for worldly riches and power.
ਚਾਰ ਜੀਵਨ-ਮਨੋਰਥ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਬੰਦਾ ਇਸ ਜਹਾਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਜੰਮਿਆ ਹੈ; ਪਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
