ਧੰਧੈ ਧਾਵਤ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧਿਆ ਨਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
DhanDhai Dhaavat jag baaDhi-aa naa boojhai veechaar.
The world is so bound in worldly pursuits that it can not think about getting out of it.
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਕਾਰ-ਵਿਹਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਇਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਨਿਕਲਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ) ਸੋਚ ਸੋਚ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਗਵਾਰੁ ॥
jaman maran visaari-aa manmukh mugaDh gavaar.
The spiritually blind, foolish and self-willed mortal has even forgotten all about the cycle of birth and death.
ਮੂਰਖ, ਬੇਸਮਝ ਅਧਰਮੀ ਜੰਮਣ ਤੇ ਮਰਣ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਭੁਲਾ ਹੀ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੭॥
gur raakhay say ubray sachaa sabad veechaar. ||7||
Only those saved by the Guru, get liberated from this web of attachment by reflecting on the Guru’s true word. ||7||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਕੀਤੀ, ਉਹ ਸੱਚੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਚ-ਮੰਡਲ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਕੇ (ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਜੇਵੜੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਬਚ ਨਿਕਲੇ ਹਨ॥੭॥
ਸੂਹਟੁ ਪਿੰਜਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕੈ ਬੋਲੈ ਬੋਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
soohat pinjar paraym kai bolai bolanhaar.
When in the cage of divine love, a parrot-like human being lovingly speaks the words that are pleasing to God,,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਜੀਵ-ਤੋਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਜਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਬੋਲਣਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਸੰਦ ਹੈ,
ਸਚੁ ਚੁਗੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਐ ਉਡੈ ਤ ਏਕਾ ਵਾਰ ॥
sach chugai amrit pee-ai udai ta aykaa vaar.
then he pecks at truth and drinks the ambrosial nectar of Naam so that when his soul flies out of this cage of human frame, it flies away only once and never comes back.
ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਜੀਵ-ਤੋਤਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਚੋਗ ਚੁਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਸਰੀਰ-ਪਿੰਜਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ) ਇਕੋ ਵਾਰੀ ਹੀ ਤਿਆਗ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ।
ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਖਸਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥੮॥੨॥
gur mili-ai khasam pachhaanee-ai kaho naanak mokh du-aar. ||8||2||
O’ Nanak, say that on meeting the Guru, when we recognize our Master-God, we get to the door of liberation from the worldly attachments. ||8||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖ- ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਨ ਤੇ ਖਸਮ-ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਦਾ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ਾ ਲੱਭ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੨॥

Raag Maaroo, First Guru:
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਤਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਰੁ ਭਾਗੋ ਕਿਸੁ ਪਹਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
sabad marai taa maar mar bhaago kis peh jaa-o.
When one eradicates egotism through the Guru’s word, one overcomes the fear of physical death; otherwise, where can I go to escape death?
(ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜ ਕੇ) ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਉਂਞ ਮੌਤ ਤੋਂ) ਭੱਜ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ?
ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਡਰਿ ਭੈ ਭਾਗੀਐ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਨਾਉ ॥
jis kai dar bhai bhaagee-ai amrit taa ko naa-o.
Immortalizer is the Name of that God, by living under whose immaculate fear, we can escape the fear of death.
ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ (ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ), ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਅਟੱਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਾਰਹਿ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਏਕੁ ਤੂ ਬੀਜਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥
maareh raakhahi ayk too beeja-o naahee thaa-o. ||1||
O’ God, You are the only one who destroys or protects; except for You, there is no other place (to go for protection). ||1||
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ। ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ (ਜੋ ਮੌਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਸਕੇ) ॥੧॥
ਬਾਬਾ ਮੈ ਕੁਚੀਲੁ ਕਾਚਉ ਮਤਿਹੀਨ ॥
baabaa mai kucheel kaacha-o matiheen.
O’ God, (without Your Name) I am impure, immature, and lacking wisdom.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਮੈਂ ਗੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ-ਦਿਲ ਹਾਂ, ਅਕਲ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋ ਕਛੁ ਨਹੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਕੀਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naam binaa ko kachh nahee gur poorai pooree mat keen. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The perfect Guru has imparted this wisdom that without Naam, one is worth nothing. ||1||Pause||
ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ ਕਾਸੇ ਜੋਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ (ਅਕਲੋਂ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਹੈ)। (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ) ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਮੱਤ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੀ (ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਕਾਈ ਨਾਹ ਖਾਏ) ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਅਵਗਣਿ ਸੁਭਰ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਕਿਉ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
avgan subhar gun nahee bin gun ki-o ghar jaa-o.
O’ God, (without Naam) I get filled with vices and end up with no virtues; then how can I reach God’s presence, my real home?
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ) ਮੈਂ ਔਗੁਣ ਨਾਲ ਨਕਾ-ਨਕ ਭਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੇ, ਤੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈਂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ) ਦੇਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ?
ਸਹਜਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਾਗਾ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
sahj sabad sukh oopjai bin bhaagaa Dhan naahi.
Peace wells up in mind when one reflects on the Guru’s word in a state of poise, but without good fortune this wealth of Naam is not received.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਡੋਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ,
ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸੇ ਬਾਧੇ ਦੂਖ ਸਹਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
jin kai naam na man vasai say baaDhay dookh sahaahi. ||2||
Those in whose mind Naam does not abide, are bound to vices and they keep suffering. ||2||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੱਸਦਾ, ਉਹ ਔਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੱਧੇ ਹੋਏ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਸੇ ਕਿਤੁ ਆਏ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥
jinee naam visaari-aa say kit aa-ay sansaar.
Those who have abondened God’s Name, what for did they even come to this world?
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਉਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਹਦੇ ਲਈ ਆਏ?
ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਗਾਡੇ ਲਾਦੇ ਛਾਰੁ ॥
aagai paachhai sukh nahee gaaday laaday chhaar.
Neither here nor hereafter they find any peace; they are so full of vices, as if they are the carts loaded with ashes.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਖ, ਨਾਹ ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਖ, ਉਹ ਤਾਂ ਸੁਆਹ ਦੇ ਲੱਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਗੱਡੇ ਹਨ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ)।
ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਮੇਲਾ ਨਹੀ ਦੂਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਜਮ ਦੁਆਰਿ ॥੩॥
vichhurhi-aa maylaa nahee dookh ghano jam du-aar. ||3||
They are separated from God, do not get opportunity to unite with Him and suffer immense pain at the hands of demon of death. ||3||
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਨਸੀਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਉਹ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਤੇ ਡਾਢਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਅਗੈ ਕਿਆ ਜਾਣਾ ਨਾਹਿ ਮੈ ਭੂਲੇ ਤੂ ਸਮਝਾਇ ॥
agai ki-aa jaanaa naahi mai bhoolay too samjhaa-ay.
O’ God, I do not know what would happen to me after death if I am not engrossed in Naam; please help me, the spiritually ignorant, to understand it.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਹੀ ਵਾਪਰੇਗੀ। ਮੈਨੂੰ ਭੁੱਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਨੂੰ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਅਕਲ ਦੇਹ।
ਭੂਲੇ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਜੋ ਦਸੇ ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਲਾਗਉ ਪਾਇ ॥
bhoolay maarag jo dasay tis kai laaga-o paa-ay.
I would humbly submit to such a person who could show me the righteous path.
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਏ ਹੋਏ ਨੂੰ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਕੋਈ ਰਸਤਾ ਦੱਸੇਗਾ, ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪੈਰੀਂ ਲੱਗਾਂਗਾ।
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੪॥
gur bin daataa ko nahee keemat kahan na jaa-ay. ||4||
There is no other benefactor to show the righteous path besides the Guru whose worth cannot be described. ||4||
(ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤੇ ਦੀ) ਦਾਤ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੪॥
ਸਾਜਨੁ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਾ ਗਲਿ ਮਿਲਾ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਠਾਇਓ ਲੇਖੁ ॥
saajan daykhaa taa gal milaa saach pathaa-i-o laykh.
I have sent a letter of truth (about my intensity of love for Him and His Name), if I see my beloved, I would embrace Him.
ਸਿਮਰਨ-ਰੂਪ ਚਿੱਠੀ ਮੈਂ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ) ਭੇਜੀ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਸੱਜਣ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਮੈਂ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰਾਂਗੀ ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਲੱਗ ਜਾਵਾਂਗੀ।
ਮੁਖਿ ਧਿਮਾਣੈ ਧਨ ਖੜੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਖੀ ਦੇਖੁ ॥
mukh Dhimaanai Dhan kharhee gurmukh aakhee daykh.
O’ sad soul-bride, standing there, you can visualize Him with your spiritual eyes by following Guru’s teachings.
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ) ਹੇ ਨਿਮੋ-ਝੂਣ ਖਲੋਤੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ! ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਉ, ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਅੱਖੀਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰ ਲੈ।
ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੂ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਹਿ ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮਿ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥੫॥
tuDh bhaavai too man vaseh nadree karam visaykh. ||5||
O’ God, You manifest in a person’s mind, only if it so pleases You, and it is only by Your grace that one is blessed with the glory of Your vision. ||5||
(ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਸਾਡੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੀਹ ਵੱਸ?) ਜੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗੇ ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਪਰਗਟਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇਰੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਨਾਲ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਭੂਖ ਪਿਆਸੋ ਜੇ ਭਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਾਗਉ ਦੇਇ ॥
bhookh pi-aaso jay bhavai ki-aa tis maaga-o day-ay.
If a human being is roaming about hungry and thirsty for worldly wealth, what can I ask him to share with me and what can he give?
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਭੁੱਖਾ ਤਿਹਾਇਆ ਭਟਕ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਕੀਹ (ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ) ਮੰਗ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ? ਉਹ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੀਹ ਦੇ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਬੀਜਉ ਸੂਝੈ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਪੂਰਨੁ ਦੇਇ ॥
beeja-o soojhai ko nahee man tan pooran day-ay.
I cannot think of any other benefactor except God who is fully pervading in our mind and body.
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤਾਂ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ (ਦਾਤਾ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁੱਝਦਾ, ਜੋ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਤਨ ਵਿਚ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਆਪਿ ਵਡਾਈ ਦੇਇ ॥੬॥
jin kee-aa tin daykhi-aa aap vadaa-ee day-ay. ||6||
God who has created this world, He Himself takes care of it and blesses it with the glory of Naam. ||6||
ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਭੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ (ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਦੀ) ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਨਗਰੀ ਨਾਇਕੁ ਨਵਤਨੋ ਬਾਲਕੁ ਲੀਲ ਅਨੂਪੁ ॥
nagree naa-ik navtano baalak leel anoop.
God is the Master of this town-like body who is youthful, childlike and stages uniquely amazing plays.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਰੂਪ ਨਗਰੀ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ। ਨਵਾਂ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਬਾਲਕ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਅਨੋਖੇ ਕੌਤਕ ਕਰਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਰਿ ਨ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਪੰਖਣੂ ਸਾਚਉ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥
naar na purakh na pankh-noo saacha-o chatur saroop.
God is neither a male, nor a female, nor a bird, but He is an everlasting embodiment of wisdom and is in every male, female, bird etc.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਅਕਲ ਦਾ ਪੁੰਜ ਹੈ, (ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਮਰਦ ਪੰਛੀ ਆਦਿਕ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ) ਪਰ ਉਹ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਮਰਦ ਨਹੀਂ, ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਪੰਛੀ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਥੀਐ ਤੂ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਤੂ ਧੂਪੁ ॥੭॥
jo tis bhaavai so thee-ai too deepak too Dhoop. ||7||
Whatever pleases Him is happening, O’ God, You are like the lamp, the provider of wisdom and like the fragrance, the provider of sweet temper. ||7||
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਉਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਨਣ (ਗਿਆਨ) ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਗੰਧੀ (ਮਿੱਠਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ) ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੭॥
ਗੀਤ ਸਾਦ ਚਾਖੇ ਸੁਣੇ ਬਾਦ ਸਾਦ ਤਨਿ ਰੋਗੁ ॥
geet saad chaakhay sunay baad saad tan rog.
I have heard the songs of the world and tasted the relishes but these enjoyments are vain and insipid, and give rise to ailments in the body.
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਸੁਣ ਵੇਖੇ ਹਨ, ਸੁਆਦ ਚੱਖ ਵੇਖੇ ਹਨ; ਇਹ ਗੀਤ ਤੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੋਗ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਚੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਚਉ ਚਵੈ ਛੂਟੈ ਸੋਗ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ॥
sach bhaavai saacha-o chavai chhootai sog vijog.
But the person to whom God seems pleasing, meditates on true Naam, and escapes the sorrow of his separation from God.
ਪਰ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲੋਂ) ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਦੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁ ਹੋਗੁ ॥੮॥੩॥
naanak naam na veesrai jo tis bhaavai so hog. ||8||3||
O’ Nanak, the one who does not forsake Naam, believes that only that comes to pass in the world which pleases God. ||8||3||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਭੁੱਲਦਾ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਯਕੀਨ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਉਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਸੰਦ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੩॥

Raag Maaroo, First Guru:
ਸਾਚੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਹੋਰਿ ਲਾਲਚ ਬਾਦਿ ॥
saachee kaar kamaavnee hor laalach baad.
O’ God, a sincere devotee performs his deeds truthfully and for him, any kind of greed, other than remembrance of God’s Name, is undesirable.
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਮਾਲਕ ਦਾ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਨਾਮ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਬਾਕੀ ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਅਰਥ (ਦਿੱਸਦੇ) ਹਨ।
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਸਚਿ ਸਾਦਿ ॥
ih man saachai mohi-aa jihvaa sach saad.
The eternal God has captivated devotee’s mind in such a way that his tongue remains absorbed in enjoying the relish of God’s Name.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਵੱਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੀ) ਜੀਭ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਵਿਚ (ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ) ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਰਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਹੋਰਿ ਚਲਹਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਲਾਦਿ ॥੧॥
bin naavai ko ras nahee hor chaleh bikh laad. ||1||
No other relish besides that of Naam interests him because he knows that they who are devoid of Naam, depart from here loaded with the poison of sins. ||1||
(ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਰਸ (ਖਿੱਚੀ) ਨਹੀਂ (ਪਾਂਦਾ)। (ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ) ਬੰਦੇ ਉਹ ਚੀਜ਼ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਲੈ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਲਈ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਐਸਾ ਲਾਲਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਕੋ ਸੁਣਿ ਖਸਮ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥
aisaa laalaa mayray laal ko sun khasam hamaaray.
O’ my beloved Master-God, please listen: I am such a devotee of Yours,
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਖਸਮ! ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਲਾਲ! (ਮੇਰੀ ਅਰਜ਼ੋਈ) ਸੁਣ। ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਲਾਲ ਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਤੇਰਾ) ਅਜੇਹਾ ਸੇਵਕ-ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮ ਹਾਂ,
ਜਿਉ ਫੁਰਮਾਵਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਚਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਲਾਲ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ji-o furmaaveh ti-o chalaa sach laal pi-aaray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I live as You command, O’ my beloved Master. ||1||Pause||
ਕਿ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਹੁਕਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਮੈਂ ਤਿਵੇਂ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਤੇ) ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਲਾਲੇ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਗੋਲੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਮੀਰਾ ॥
an-din laalay chaakree golay sir meeraa.
Day and night, the devotee is faithful to his Master; he feels that his Master is always watching him.
ਸੇਵਕ ਨੇ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਹੀ ਸੰਭਾਲੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਖੜਾ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ) ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਮਨੁ ਵੇਚਿਆ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥
gur bachnee man vaychi-aa sabad man Dheeraa.
He so dutifully follows Guru’s teachings, as if he has sold his mind for the Guru’s word; it is through the Guru’s word, that his mind is pacified.
ਸੇਵਕ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵੇਚ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ (ਟਿਕ ਕੇ) ਸੇਵਕ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਧੀਰਜ ਫੜਦਾ ਹੈ।
