ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ॥
baajh guroo gubaaraa.
Without following the Guru’s teachings, one remains in the darkness of spiritual ignorance.
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ) ਹਨੇਰਾ (ਹੀ ਹਨੇਰਾ) ਹੈ।
ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
mil satgur nistaaraa. ||2||
Only upon meeting the true Guru and following his teachings, one is liberated from the vices and is spiritually enlightened. ||2||
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਹੀ ਇਸ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਣੇ ॥
ha-o ha-o karam kamaanay.
O’ my friends, one performs many of the deeds only to satisfy his ego.
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਜੀਵ (ਅਨੇਕਾਂ) ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ.
ਤੇ ਤੇ ਬੰਧ ਗਲਾਣੇ ॥
tay tay banDh galaanay.
Those deeds entangle one like chains around the neck.
ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਕਰਮ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਫਾਹੀਆਂ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
mayree mayree Dhaaree.
One harbors self-conceit and self-interest,
ਜੀਵ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਮਮਤਾ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਓਹਾ ਪੈਰਿ ਲੋਹਾਰੀ ॥
ohaa pair lohaaree.
which are like iron shackles on the feet.
ਉਹ ਮਮਤਾ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਪੈਰ ਵਿਚ ਲੋਹੇ ਦੀ ਬੇੜੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸੋ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਏਕੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ ਜਿਸੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਭਾਗੁ ਮਥਾਣੈ ॥੩॥
so gur mil ayk pachhaanai ll jis hovai bhaag mathaanai. ||3||
One who is preordained, after meeting the Guru and following his teachings, creates a deep spiritual bond with God.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਭਾਗ ਜਾਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਸੋ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਜਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
so mili-aa je har man bhaa-i-aa.
Only that one realizes God who is pleasing to Him.
ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਸੋ ਭੂਲਾ ਜਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ॥
so bhoolaa je parabhoo bhulaa-i-aa.
and only that one goes astray who is deluded by Almighty based on his deeds.
ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਹ ਆਪਹੁ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥
nah aaphu moorakh gi-aanee.
No one, by himself is ignorant or a wise person.
ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿ ਕਰਾਵੈ ਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਨੀ ॥
je karaavai so naam vakhaanee.
Whatever God makes a person to do, based on his past deeds, one is known as wise as ignorant.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਜੀਵ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਮੂਰਖ ਜਾਂ ਗਿਆਨੀ) ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰਾ ॥
tayraa ant na paaraavaaraa.
O’ God, there is no end or limit to Your virtues and power.
ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ, ਤੇਰੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਦਾ ਉਰਲਾ ਪਾਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੭॥
jan naanak sad balihaaraa. ||4||1||17||
Devotee Nanak is forever dedicated to You. ||4||1||17||

Raag Maaroo, Fifth Guru:
ਮੋਹਨੀ ਮੋਹਿ ਲੀਏ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਨੀਆ ॥
mohnee mohi lee-ay tarai gunee-aa.
O’ my friends, the captivating Maya, the worldly riches and power, has enticed all mortals who are swayed by its three modes (vice, virtue, and power).
ਉਸ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਤ੍ਰਿ-ਗੁਣੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ.
ਲੋਭਿ ਵਿਆਪੀ ਝੂਠੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ॥
lobh vi-aapee jhoothee dunee-aa.
This entire perishable world is afflicted with greed.
ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਸੰਚੀ ਅੰਤ ਕੀ ਬਾਰ ਸਗਲ ਲੇ ਛਲੀਆ ॥੧॥
mayree mayree kar kai sanchee ant kee baar sagal lay chhalee-aa. ||1||
Everyone amasses and nurtures Maya, claiming its ownership; but in the end, it deceives and deserts all. ||1||
ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ (ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਮਮਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਅਖ਼ੀਰਲੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਧੋਖਾ ਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਦਇਅਲੀਆ ॥ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਗਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਲੀਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
nirbha-o nirankaar da-i-alee-aa. jee-a jant saglay partipalee-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ my friends, God is fearless, formless and merciful; and He provides sustenance to all the creatures. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਡਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਸਰੂਪਦੱਸਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਜੋ ਦਇਆ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਏਕੈ ਸ੍ਰਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਗਾਡੀ ਗਡਹੈ ॥
aykai saram kar gaadee gadhai.
There are some who work hard to collect wealth, and they keep it buried in the ground;
ਕੋਈ ਤਾਂ ਐਸਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਬੜੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਨਾਲ ਕਮਾ ਕੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਦੱਬ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਏਕਹਿ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਦਾਮੁ ਨ ਛਡਹੈ ॥
aykeh supnai daam na chhadhai.
also, there are some who cannot abandon their wealth, even in their dreams.
ਕੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਿਚ (ਭੀ, ਭਾਵ, ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਹੱਥੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਦਾ।
ਰਾਜੁ ਕਮਾਇ ਕਰੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਥੈਲੀ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਚੰਚਲਿ ਚਲੀਆ ॥੨॥
raaj kamaa-ay karee jin thailee taa kai sang na chanchal chalee-aa. ||2||
But even for those who become kings and amass worldly treasures, this mercurial wealth will not accompany them in the end. ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਹਕੂਮਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਜੋੜ ਲਿਆ; ਇਹ ਕਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਥਾਂ ਨਾਹ ਟਿਕਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ॥੨॥
ਏਕਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਪਿੰਡ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥
aykeh paraan pind tay pi-aaree.
O’ my friends, there are some who love this wealth even more than they love their own body and life.
ਕਈ ਆਪਣੇ ਧਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਤੇ ਦੇਹ ਨਾਲੋ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਏਕ ਸੰਚੀ ਤਜਿ ਬਾਪ ਮਹਤਾਰੀ ॥
ayk sanchee taj baap mehtaaree.
There are some who amass it, even if they have to desert their fathers and mothers.
ਕਈ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਓ ਤੇ ਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਇਸ (ਮਾਇਆ) ਨੂੰ ਇਕੱਤਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸੁਤ ਮੀਤ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਤੇ ਗੁਹਜੀ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਖਲੀਆ ॥੩॥
sut meet bharaat tay guhjee taa kai nikat na ho-ee khalee-aa. ||3||
Some hide it even from their children, friends and siblings, but in the end it does not stay with them either. ||3||
ਕਈ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰਾਂ, ਦੋਸਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਵੀਰਾਂ ਦੋਲੋਂ ਲੁਕੇ ਕੇ ਰਖਦੇ ਹਨ; ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਵੀ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ। ॥੩॥
ਹੋਇ ਅਉਧੂਤ ਬੈਠੇ ਲਾਇ ਤਾਰੀ ॥
ho-ay a-uDhoot baithay laa-ay taaree.
There are some who become hermits, and sit in a trance.
ਕਈ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਬੈਠਦੇ ਹਨ;
ਜੋਗੀ ਜਤੀ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
jogee jatee pandit beechaaree.
There are others who become yogis, celibates, religious scholars or thinkers.
ਕਈ ਜੋਗੀ ਹਨ ਜਤੀ ਹਨ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਹਨ;
ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਮੜੀ ਮਸਾਣੀ ਬਨ ਮਹਿ ਬਸਤੇ ਊਠਿ ਤਿਨਾ ਕੈ ਲਾਗੀ ਪਲੀਆ ॥੪॥
garihi marhee masaanee ban meh bastay ooth tinaa kai laagee palee-aa. ||4||
Some opt to reside in the homes, graveyards, cremation grounds or in the forests, but this Maya clings to them in those places also. ||4||
ਕਈ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ, ਮੜ੍ਹੀਆਂ ਮਸਾਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਉੱਠ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਚੰਬੜ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਕਾਟੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਜਾ ਕੇ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਸਿਓ ਜੀਅ ਤਾ ਕੈ ॥
kaatay banDhan thaakur jaa kay.har har naam basi-o jee-a taa kai.
When God releases them from their attachments to the worldly wealth, they enshrine God’s Name in their minds.
ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਬੰਧਨ ਕੱਟ ਦਿੱਤੇ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਆ ਟਿਕਿਆ,
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਭਏ ਜਨ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਲੀਆ ॥੫॥੨॥੧੮॥
saaDhsang bha-ay jan muktay gat paa-ee naanak nadar nihlee-aa. ||5||2||18||
O’ Nanak, upon whom God bestowed gracious glance, joined the company of saints, got emancipated and achieved the supreme spiritual state. ||5||2||18||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਵਲ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕੀਤੀ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਫਾਹੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ) ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਹੋ ਗਏ। ਤੇ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਈ ॥੫॥੨॥੧੮॥

Raag Maaroo, Fifth Guru:
ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਏਕੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸੋਊ ॥
simrahu ayk niranjan so-oo.
O’ my friends, remember the Immaculate God with love and devotion,
ਉਸੇ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੋ,
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਤ ਨ ਕੋਊ ॥
jaa tay birthaa jaat na ko-oo.
from whom no one is turned away empty-handed.
ਜਿਸ (ਦੇ ਦਰ) ਤੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ।
ਮਾਤ ਗਰਭ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰਿਆ ॥
maat garabh meh jin partipaari-aa.
God, who has cherished and preserved us in the mother’s womb,
ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਵਿਚ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕੀਤੀ,
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਦੇ ਸਾਜਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥
jee-o pind day saaj savaari-aa.
and blessed and embellished us with our body and soul,
ਜਿੰਦ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਜਪੀਐ ॥ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਸਭਿ ਢਕੀਐ ॥
so-ee biDhaataa khin khin japee-ai. jis simrat avgun sabh dhakee-ai.
we should meditate on Him, the Creator-God, each and every moment; we can conceal all our shortcomings and faults by remembering Him.
ਉਸੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਹਰੇਕ ਖਿਨ ਜਪਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦਿਆਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਔਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਢੱਕ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ.
ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਉਰ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਧਾਰਹੁ ॥
charan kamal ur antar Dhaarahu.
Enshrine God’s Immaculate Naam in your heart,
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਚਰਨ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖੋ,
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਬਨ ਤੇ ਜੀਉ ਉਧਾਰਹੁ ॥
bikhi-aa ban tay jee-o uDhaarahu.
and save yourself from the ocean of sinful worldly temptations.
ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਾਇਆ (ਸਾਗਰ ਦੇ ਠਾਠਾਂ ਮਾਰ ਰਹੇ) ਪਾਣੀ ਤੋਂ (ਆਪਣੀ) ਜਿੰਦ ਨੂੰ ਬਚਾ ਲਵੋ।
ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਹ ਮਿਟਹਿ ਬਿਲਲਾਟਾ ॥
karan palaah miteh billaataa.
All shrieks and cries of sorrow disappear (by lovingly remembering God),
(ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਸਾਰੇ ਕੀਰਨੇ ਤੇ ਵਿਰਲਾਪ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਜਪਿ ਗੋਵਿਦ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਫਾਟਾ ॥
jap govid bharam bha-o faataa.
all our doubts and fears are dispelled by remembering God.
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ (ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਜਪ ਕੇ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਡਰ (ਦਾ ਪੜਦਾ) ਫਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਪਾਏ ॥ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਏ ॥੧॥
saaDhsang virlaa ko paa-ay. naanak taa kai bal bal jaa-ay. ||1||
Only a rare individual receives God’s Name through the company of the holy persons; Nanak is always dedicated to him. ||1||
ਪਰ, ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਨਾਨਕ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਆਧਾਰਾ ॥
raam naam man tan aaDhaaraa.
O’ my friends, Naam is the mainstay of our mind and body,
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਜਿੰਦੜੀ ਤੇ ਦੇਹ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੋ ਸਿਮਰੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jo simrai tis kaa nistaaraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
One who lovingly remembers God, gets emancipated. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਨਾਮ) ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਦਾ ਪਾਰ-ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੀ ॥ ਹਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਓ ਸਠ ਮੂੜ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ॥
mithi-aa vasat sat kar maanee.hit laa-i-o sath moorh agi-aanee.
O’ the ignorant fool, you have deemed this perishable world to be real, and have imbued yourself with its love.
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਤੂੰ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਮਝ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ। ਤੇ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭ ਮਦ ਮਾਤਾ ॥
kaam kroDh lobh mad maataa.
You are engrossed in such vices as lust, anger, and greed,
(ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ!) ਤੂੰ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭ (ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ) ਦੇ ਨਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੈਂ,
ਕਉਡੀ ਬਦਲੈ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਤਾ ॥
ka-udee badlai janam gavaataa.
and for the sake of pennies, you have wasted your precious human life.
ਤੇ, ਕੌਡੀ ਦੇ ਵੱਟੇ ਆਪਣਾ (ਕੀਮਤੀ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ) ਜਨਮ ਗਵਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਅਪਨਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਪਰਾਇਐ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
apnaa chhod paraa-i-ai raataa.
Forsaking God, who always is by your side, you are imbued with the love of worldly wealth which will soon belong to someone else.
(ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ) ਆਪਣਾ (ਅਸਲ ਸਾਥੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਤੂਂ ਪਰਾਏ (ਹੋ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਧਨ-ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
maa-i-aa mad man tan sang jaataa.
You are intoxicated with Maya (worldly wealth and power), following the dictate of your mind, you are running around for the sake of your body.
ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਨਸ਼ਾ ਚੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਕਰਤ ਕਲੋਲਾ ॥
tarisan na boojhai karat kalolaa.
While indulging in revelries, your fire-like desires never get quenched.
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਮੌਜ-ਮੇਲੇ ਮਾਣਦਿਆਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਟਦੀ।
ਊਣੀ ਆਸ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸਭਿ ਬੋਲਾ ॥
oonee aas mithi-aa sabh bolaa.
Due to your intoxication with the perishable worldly wealth, all your words are false and your hopes remain unfulfilled.
(ਤੇਰੀ ਰੱਜਣ ਦੀ) ਆਸ (ਕਦੇ) ਪੂਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ। ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਹੀ ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਹਨ।
ਆਵਤ ਇਕੇਲਾ ਜਾਤ ਇਕੇਲਾ ॥
aavat ikaylaa jaat ikaylaa.
A person comes into this world alone, and from here he goes back alone.
ਜੀਵ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਕੱਲਾ ਹੀ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਇਥੋਂ ਇਕੱਲਾ ਹੀ ਤੁਰ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ.
