ਬੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੈ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਪੰਡਤ ਕਾਮਾਮਨ ਕਾ ਮਾਠਾ ॥
bayd pukaarai mukh tay pandat kaamaaman kaa maathaa.
A pundit loudly recites the Vedas (Hindu holy scriptures) from his mouth, but is very slow in following the teachings of these Vedas.
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਦ ਉੱਚੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਢਿੱਲਾ ਹੈ;
ਮੋਨੀ ਹੋਇ ਬੈਠਾ ਇਕਾਂਤੀ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਕਲਪਨ ਗਾਠਾ ॥
monee ho-ay baithaa ikaaNtee hirdai kalpan gaathaa.
Some silent sage (one who observes silence) is sitting in solitude, but the thoughts of worldly desires keep churning in his mind.
ਕੋਈ ਮੋਨਧਾਰੀ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਇਕਾਂਤ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਭੀ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਨਸਕ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਦੀ ਗੰਢ ਬੱਝੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ;
ਹੋਇ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਤਜਿ ਚਲਿਓ ਛੁਟਕੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਾਠਾ ॥੧॥
ho-ay udaasee garihu taj chali-o chhutkai naahee naathaa. ||1||
And yet another one becomes an renunciate, abandons the life of a householder; still the wandering of his mind does not cease. ||1||
(ਕੋਈ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਲੋਂ) ਉਪਰਾਮ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਤੁਰ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਭੀ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਮੁੱਕੀ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੧॥
ਜੀਅ ਕੀ ਕੈ ਪਹਿ ਬਾਤ ਕਹਾ ॥
jee-a kee kai peh baat kahaa.
To whom may I relate the state of my mind?
ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਾਂ?
ਆਪਿ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਐਸੋ ਕਹਾ ਲਹਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aap mukat mo ka-o parabh maylay aiso kahaa lahaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Where can I find such a person who has freed himself from the vices and love for Maya, and unites me with God? ||1||Pause||
ਮੈਂ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਕਿੱਥੋਂ ਲੱਭਾਂ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਆਪ (ਮੋਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤੇ, ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਭੀ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਵੇ? ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਤਪਸੀ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਦੇਹੀ ਸਾਧੀ ਮਨੂਆ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਧਾਨਾ ॥
tapsee kar kai dayhee saaDhee manoo-aa dah dis Dhaanaa.
Someone may be subjecting his body to tortures by practicing intense meditation and self discipline, but his mind could still be wandering all over.
ਕੋਈ ਤਪਸ੍ਵੀ (ਤਪ) ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਨਿਰੇ) ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਦੇ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਮਨ (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਭੀ) ਦਸੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਦੌੜ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ;
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਚਾਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਚਜੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਭਇਆ ਗੁਮਾਨਾ ॥
barahmchaar barahmchaj keenaa hirdai bha-i-aa gumaanaa.
Another person, becoming a celibate may control his lust, but then in his mind has entered a sense of egotistical pride because of it.
ਕਿਸੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਚਾਰੀ ਨੇ ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸਨਾ ਰੋਕਣ ਦਾ ਅੱਭਿਆਸ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਇਸੇ ਗੱਲ ਦਾ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿਓ ਉਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਗਾਨਾ ॥੨॥
sani-aasee ho-ay kai tirath bharmi-o us meh kroDh bigaanaa. ||2||
And yet another one becomes an ascetic and wanders around at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, but the maddening anger has arisen within him. ||2||
(ਕੋਈ) ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਬਣ ਕੇ (ਹਰੇਕ) ਤੀਰਥ ਉਤੇ ਭੌਂ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ; ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੂਰਖ ਬਣਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਘੂੰਘਰ ਬਾਧਿ ਭਏ ਰਾਮਦਾਸਾ ਰੋਟੀਅਨ ਕੇ ਓਪਾਵਾ ॥
ghoongar baaDh bha-ay raamdaasaa rotee-an kay opaavaa.
There are some who tie ankle bells and dance before the statues in temples in order to earn their living.
ਕਈ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਘੁੰਘਰੂ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਰਾਸਧਾਰੀਏ ਬਣੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਉਹ ਭੀ ਰੋਟੀਆਂ (ਕਮਾਣ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਇਹ) ਢੰਗ ਵਰਤ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ;
ਬਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਕਰਮ ਖਟ ਕੀਨੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭੇਖ ਦਿਖਾਵਾ ॥
barat naym karam khat keenay baahar bhaykh dikhaavaa.
There are others who keep fasts, observe religious codes, perform all rituals and wear religious garb just for the showing.
(ਕਈ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ) ਵਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਆਦਿਕ ਅਤੇ ਛੇ (ਮਿਥੇ ਹੋਏ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਭੀ) ਬਾਹਰ (ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ) ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪਹਿਰਾਵਾ ਵਿਖਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ;
ਗੀਤ ਨਾਦ ਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਗ ਅਲਾਪੇ ਮਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਵਾ ॥੩॥
geet naad mukh raag alaapay man nahee har har gaavaa. ||3||
They do sing songs, melodies and hymns, but their minds are not focussed on singing God’s praises. ||3||
ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਤਾਂ ਭਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਅਲਾਪਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਭੀ ਕਦੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ॥੩॥
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਰਹਤ ਹਹਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤਾ
॥harakh sog lobh moh rahat heh nirmal har kay santaa.
Only the saints of God are immaculately pure; they are free from pleasure and pain, and the impulses of greed and worldly attachments.
ਸਿਰਫ਼) ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਹੀ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਗ਼ਮੀ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਆਦਿਕ ਤੋਂ ਬਚੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਧੂੜਿ ਪਾਏ ਮਨੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਜਾ ਦਇਆ ਕਰੇ ਭਗਵੰਤਾ ॥
tin kee Dhoorh paa-ay man mayraa jaa da-i-aa karay bhagvantaa.
When God bestows His mercy, then my mind humbly follows the teachings of those saints of God.
ਜਦੋਂ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਦਇਆ ਕਰੇ ਤਦੋਂ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਤਰੀ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ॥੪॥
kaho naanak gur pooraa mili-aa taaN utree man kee chintaa. ||4||
O’ Nanak! say, by following the teachings of the perfect Guru, all anxiety of my mind was removed. ||4|
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਦੋਂ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਮੇਰਾ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥
mayraa antarjaamee har raa-i-aa.
My God is Omniscient and the supreme King.
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਬਾਹਰਲੇ ਭੇਖਾਂ ਉੱਦਮਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਤੀਜਦਾ)।
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਜੀਅ ਕਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਬਿਸਰਿ ਗਏ ਬਕਬਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੬॥੧੫॥
sabh kichh jaanai mayray jee-a kaa pareetam bisar ga-ay bakbaa-i-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o doojaa. ||6||15||
The Beloved of my soul knows everything; (those who realize Him), forget all the trivial talks and pretences. ||6||15||

Raag Maaroo, Fifth Guru:
ਕੋਟਿ ਲਾਖ ਸਰਬ ਕੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ॥
kot laakh sarab ko raajaa jis hirdai naam tumaaraa.
O’ God, one who has enshrined Your Name in his heart, wins over the hearts of millions of people.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ (ਬੰਦਿਆਂ) ਸਭਨਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ (ਦੇ ਦਿਲ) ਦਾ ਰਾਜਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਦੀਆ ਮੇਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸੇ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਗਾਵਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
jaa ka-o naam na dee-aa mayrai satgur say mar janmeh gaavaaraa. ||1||
Those whom my true Guru has not blessed with God’s Name, are spiritually ignorant, and they keep going through the cycle of birth and death. ||1||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਉਹ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਮੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹੀ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖੁ ॥
mayray satgur hee pat raakh.
My true Guru protects and preserves my honor.
ਮੈਂਡੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਆਬਰੂ ਰਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਚੀਤਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਪਤਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਰਲੀਐ ਖਾਕੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
cheet aavahi tab hee pat pooree bisrat ralee-ai khaak. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ God, whenever I remember You, I receive great honor; forsaking You , I feel I am in the dust (spiritually low).||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਦੋਂ ਤੂੰ (ਅਸਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸੇਂ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ (ਸਾਨੂੰ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਪੂਰਨ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ। (ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ) ਭੁੱਲਿਆਂ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਰਲ ਜਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਰੂਪ ਰੰਗ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਮਨ ਭੋਗਣ ਤੇ ਤੇ ਛਿਦ੍ਰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ॥
roop rang khusee-aa man bhogan tay tay chhidar vikaaraa.
Our mind’s indulgence in worldly pleasures, enjoyment and beauty are like holes in our spiritual lives.
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਰੂਪ ਰੰਗ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ, ਮਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੌਜਾਂ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਕਾਰ-ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ) ਛੇਕ ਹਨ।
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਕਲਿਆਣਾ ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜੁ ਇਹੁ ਸਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
har kaa naam niDhaan kali-aanaa sookh sahj ih saaraa. ||2||
God’s Name is the treasure of inner peace, spiritual stability and the sublime wealth; it is the source for liberation from the vices. ||2||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ) ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈ; ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ (ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ (ਦਾ ਮੂਲ) ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗ ਬਿਰੰਗ ਖਿਨੈ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਦਰ ਕੀ ਛਾਇਆ ॥
maa-i-aa rang birang khinai meh ji-o baadar kee chhaa-i-aa.
O’ my friends, much like the shadow of a passing cloud, all worldly pleasures fade away in an instant;
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਬੱਦਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ (ਛਿਨ-ਭੰਗਰ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਖਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਫਿੱਕੇ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ;
ਸੇ ਲਾਲ ਭਏ ਗੂੜੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
say laal bha-ay goorhai rang raatay jin gur mil har har gaa-i-aa. ||3||
but, when they meet the Guru and sing glorious praises of God, they get imbued with the deep love of God. ll3ll.
ਪਰ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕੀਤੀ, ਉਹ ਲਾਲ ਹੋ ਗਏ, ਉਹ ਗੂੜ੍ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਗਏ ॥੩॥
ਊਚ ਮੂਚ ਅਪਾਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਅਗਮ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ ॥
ooch mooch apaar su-aamee agam darbaaraa.
The infinite Master is the highest of the high, He is infinite and inaccassible.
ਉਹ ਜੀਵ ਉਸ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਮੋ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਸੋਭਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਖਸਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥੪॥੭॥੧੬॥
naamo vadi-aa-ee sobhaa naanak khasam pi-aaraa. ||4||7||16||
O’ Nanak, those whom the Master God is pleasing, for them His Name is the real honor and glory.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੈ, ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੭॥੧੬॥

One eternal God, realized by the grace of the True Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਓਅੰਕਾਰਿ ਉਤਪਾਤੀ ॥
o-ankaar utpaatee.
The all pervading God has created the universe
ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਉਤਪੱਤੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ;
ਕੀਆ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਸਭ ਰਾਤੀ ॥
kee-aa dinas sabh raatee.
It is He who made the days, the nights, and everything.
ਦਿਨ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਬਣਾਇਆ; ਰਾਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਉਸੇ ਨੇ ਬਣਾਈਆਂ, ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਉਸੇ ਨੇ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਵਣੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਣੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਪਾਣੀ ॥
van tarin taribhavan paanee.
He created the forests, the meadows, three worlds, water,
ਜੰਗਲ, (ਜੰਗਲ ਦਾ) ਘਾਹ, ਤਿੰਨੇ ਭਵਨ, ਪਾਣੀ (ਆਦਿਕ ਸਾਰੇ ਤੱਤ),
ਚਾਰਿ ਬੇਦ ਚਾਰੇ ਖਾਣੀ ॥
chaar bayd chaaray khaanee.
the four Vedas, the four sources of life,
ਚਾਰ ਵੇਦ, ਚਾਰ ਹੀ ਖਾਣੀਆਂ,
ਖੰਡ ਦੀਪ ਸਭਿ ਲੋਆ ॥
khand deep sabh lo-aa.
the continents, islands and all the worlds
ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ ਵਖ ਵਖ ਹਿੱਸੇ, ਟਾਪੂ, ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ-
ਏਕ ਕਵਾਵੈ ਤੇ ਸਭਿ ਹੋਆ ॥੧॥
ayk kavaavai tay sabh ho-aa. ||1||
have come into existence from God’s command. ||1||
ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਬਣੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰਾ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਰੇ ॥
karnaihaaraa boojhhu ray.
O’ my friend, realize the Creator God.
ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਸੂਝੈ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
satgur milai ta soojhai ray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
But, it is only upon meeting the true Guru (and following his teachings) that one gets this realization. ||1||Pause||
ਪਰ, ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਸੂਝ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਕੀਆ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥
tarai gun kee-aa pasaaraa.
O’ my friends, God Himself has created the expanse (of the universe) based on three modes (vice, virtue and power) of Maya in the creatures,
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਤ੍ਰੈ-ਗੁਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਨਰਕ ਸੁਰਗ ਅਵਤਾਰਾ ॥
narak surag avtaaraa.
because of which some people are enjoying life while others are suffering.
ਕੋਈ ਨਰਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹਨ, ਕੋਈ ਸੁਰਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹਨ।
ਹਉਮੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥
ha-umai aavai jaa-ee.
Due to the ego one keeps wandering in cycles of birth and death.
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਜੀਵ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਨੁ ਟਿਕਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਰਾਈ ॥
man tikan na paavai raa-ee.
A person’s mind does not stay still even for a moment.
(ਜੀਵ ਦਾ) ਮਨ ਰਤਾ ਭਰ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਟਿਕਦਾ।
