Raag Maaru, First Guru:
ਮੁਲ ਖਰੀਦੀ ਲਾਲਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ਸਭਾਗਾ ॥
mul khareedee laalaa golaa mayraa naa-o sab
O’ God, since the time the Guru has purchased my self-conceit in exchange for Your love, I have become Your servant and now people call me Subhaga, the fortunate one.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਜਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਉਸਦੇ ਵੱਟੇ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਖ਼ਰੀਦ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਾਸ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਭੀ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਆਖਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਈ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਚਨੀ ਹਾਟਿ ਬਿਕਾਨਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥੧॥
gur kee bachnee haat bikaanaa jit laa-i-aa tit laagaa. ||1||
Impressed by the Guru’s words, I have sold my self-conceit at the Guru’s shop (Guru’s congregation) and now I do only what the Guru tells me to do. ||1||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਇਵਜ਼ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਹੁਣ ਜਿਸ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਂ ਲੱਗਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥
ਤੇਰੇ ਲਾਲੇ ਕਿਆ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
tayray laalay ki-aa chaturaa-ee.
O’ God! what cleverness can Your servant try with You?
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰਾ ਦਾਸ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਕੀ ਚਲਾਕੀ ਖੇਡ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saahib kaa hukam na karnaa jaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ God, I cannot even carry out Your command perfectly. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ! ਮੈਂ ਤਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਸਿਰੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਾਡ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਮਾ ਲਾਲੀ ਪਿਉ ਲਾਲਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਉ ਲਾਲੇ ਕਾ ਜਾਇਆ ॥
maa laalee pi-o laalaa mayraa ha-o laalay kaa jaa-i-aa.
My mother-like intellect and my father-like sense of Contentment are Your servants; my conduct of selfless service is born out of contentment.
ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ (ਮੇਰੀ ਮੱਤ) ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਉ (ਭਾਵ ਸੰਤੋਖ) ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਸ ਹਨ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਮੇਰੇ ਸੇਵਕ-ਸੁਭਾਵ ਨੂੰ) ਸੰਤੋਖ-ਪਿਉ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਜਨਮ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਲਾਲੀ ਨਾਚੈ ਲਾਲਾ ਗਾਵੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਉ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
laalee naachai laalaa gaavai bhagat kara-o tayree raa-i-aa. ||2||
O’ God, the sovereign king! when I engage in Your devotional worship, I feel as if my intellect is dancing in bliss and my contentment is delightfully singing. ||2||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਉਂ ਜਿਉਂ ਹੁਣ,ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ (ਮੱਤ) ਹੁਲਾਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਉ (ਸੰਤੋਖ) ਉਛਾਲੇ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਪੀਅਹਿ ਤ ਪਾਣੀ ਆਣੀ ਮੀਰਾ ਖਾਹਿ ਤ ਪੀਸਣ ਜਾਉ ॥
pee-ah ta paanee aanee meeraa khaahi ta peesan jaa-o.
O’ supreme king! I would fetch water for Your beings to drink and grind grains for Your beings to eat.
ਹੇ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ (ਬੰਦਿਆਂ) ਲਈ ਪੀਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਢੋਵਾਂ, ਤੇਰੇ (ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੇ) ਖਾਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਚੱਕੀ ਪੀਹਾਂ,
ਪਖਾ ਫੇਰੀ ਪੈਰ ਮਲੋਵਾ ਜਪਤ ਰਹਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੩॥
pakhaa fayree pair malovaa japat rahaa tayraa naa-o. ||3||
I would humbly serve Your beings like waving a fan and massaging their feet; I may always keep meditating on Your Name. ||3||
ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੱਖੀ ਝਲਾਂ, ਤੇਰੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰ ਘੁੱਟਾਂ, ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ ॥੩॥
ਲੂਣ ਹਰਾਮੀ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਲਾਲਾ ਬਖਸਿਹਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
loon haraamee naanak laalaa bakhsihi tuDh vadi-aa-ee.
O’ God! Your servant Nanak is ungrateful, it would be Your greatness if You forgive him.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰਾ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਕਿ੍ਤਘਣ ਹੈਂ ਜੇਕਰ ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਫ਼ ਕਰ ਦੇਵੇਂ, ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ।
ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਦਇਆਪਤਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੪॥੬॥
aad jugaad da-i-aapat daataa tuDh vin mukat na paa-ee. ||4||6||
O’ God! since the very beginning and throughout the ages, You have been the merciful and beneficent Master; no one can attain emancipation without Your grace. ||4||6||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਹੈਤਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ॥੪॥੬॥

Raag Maaru, First Guru:
ਕੋਈ ਆਖੈ ਭੂਤਨਾ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਤਾਲਾ ॥
ko-ee aakhai bhootnaa ko kahai baytaalaa.
Someone says that he (Nanak) is a ghost, someone says that he is a demon,
ਕੋਈ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ (ਨਾਨਕ) ਤਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੂਤ ਹੈ ਕੋਈ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ (ਨਾਨਕ) ਜਿੰਨ ਹੈ ,
ਕੋਈ ਆਖੈ ਆਦਮੀ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਵੇਚਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
ko-ee aakhai aadmee naanak vaychaaraa. ||1||
but some call Nanak an ordinary humble man. ||1||
ਪਰ ਕੋਈ ਬੰਦਾ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ (ਨਹੀਂ) ਨਾਨਕ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ (ਸਾਡੇ ਵਰਗਾ) ਆਦਮੀ (ਹੀ) ਉਂਞ ਹੈ ਆਜਿਜ਼ ਜੇਹਾ ॥੧॥
ਭਇਆ ਦਿਵਾਨਾ ਸਾਹ ਕਾ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਉਰਾਨਾ ॥
bha-i-aa divaanaa saah kaa naanak ba-uraanaa.
But I am obsessed with the love for the Master-God, so much so that people say that Nanak has gone insane,
ਮੈਂ ਸ਼ਾਹ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਸ਼ਿਕ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ। (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਆਖਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਨਾਨਕ ਝੱਲਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ
ਹਉ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ha-o har bin avar na jaanaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
but except for God, I do not know anyone else. ||1||Pause||
ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀਆਂ ਸਾਂਝਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਤਉ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਭੈ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
ta-o dayvaanaa jaanee-ai jaa bhai dayvaanaa ho-ay.
Only then one is considered crazy when he does not care about the worldly fears and worries,
ਕੇਵਲ ਤਦ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਝੱਲਾ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਪਰਵਾਹ ਜੇਹਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਏਕੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥
aykee saahib baahraa doojaa avar na jaanai ko-ay. ||2||
and does not recognize anyone other than God. ||2||
ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ (ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਾਮਦ-ਮੁਥਾਜੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ) ॥੨॥
ਤਉ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਏਕਾ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
ta-o dayvaanaa jaanee-ai jaa aykaa kaar kamaa-ay.
The worldly people consider him crazy, when he performs the devotional worship of God alone;
ਕੇਵਲ ਤਦ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਝੱਲਾ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਟਹਿਲ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਦੂਜੀ ਅਵਰ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਕਾਇ ॥੩॥
hukam pachhaanai khasam kaa doojee avar si-aanap kaa-ay. ||3||
he follows the command of the Master-God and does not need any other cleverness or wise thought. ||3||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈਂਦਾ ॥੩॥
ਤਉ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
ta-o dayvaanaa jaanee-ai jaa saahib Dharay pi-aar.
To the worldly people he is known to be crazy, when he enshrines in his heart the love for his Master-God alone;
ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਝੱਲਾ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਮਾਲਿਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮੰਦਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪ ਕਉ ਅਵਰੁ ਭਲਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੭॥
mandaa jaanai aap ka-o avar bhalaa sansaar. ||4||7||
when he deems himself as bad and the rest of the world as good. ||4||7||
ਜਦੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ (ਹੋਰ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ) ਮਾੜਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਹੋਰ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਚੰਗਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੭॥

Raag Maaru, First Guru:
ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਰਬ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥
ih Dhan sarab rahi-aa bharpoor.
This wealth of God’s Name is pervading in all,
(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ,
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਸਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਦੂਰਿ ॥੧॥
manmukh fireh se jaaneh door. ||1||
but the self-willed persons wander around, thinking that wealt of God’s Name is far away. ||1||
ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਤੇ ਦੂਰ ਦੁਰੇਡੇ ਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਹਮਾਰੈ ॥
so Dhan vakhar naam ridai hamaarai.
O’ God, bestow mercy so that this wealth of Naam may manifest in my heart,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ) ਤੇਰਾ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਵੱਖਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਵੱਸ ਪਏ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਦੇਹਿ ਤਿਸੈ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jis too deh tisai nistaarai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
because the person whom You bless with the wealth of Your Name; Your Name ferries him across the worldly ocean of vices . ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ (ਸ਼ੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਨ ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਜਲੈ ਨ ਤਸਕਰੁ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
na ih Dhan jalai na taskar lai jaa-ay.
This wealth of God’s Name neither gets burnt, nor gets stolen by a thief.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਇਕ ਐਸਾ ਧਨ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਨਾਹ ਸੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਚੋਰ ਚੁਰਾ ਕੇ ਲੈ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨ ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਡੂਬੈ ਨ ਇਸੁ ਧਨ ਕਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
na ih Dhan doobai na is Dhan ka-o milai sajaa-ay. ||2||
This wealth does not drown, and one is never punished because of it. ||2|
ਇਹ ਧਨ (ਪਾਣੀਆਂ ਹੜ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ) ਡੁੱਬਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਧਨ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਦੰਡ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਇਸੁ ਧਨ ਕੀ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
is Dhan kee daykhhu vadi-aa-ee.
Look at the greatness of this wealth;
ਵੇਖੋ, ਇਸ ਧਨ ਦਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਗੁਣ ਇਹ ਹੈ;
ਸਹਜੇ ਮਾਤੇ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥
sehjay maatay an-din jaa-ee. ||3||
(that the one who has it), his every day passes absorbed in a state of spiritual poise. ||3||
ਕਿ (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਇਹ ਧਨ ਹੈ,ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ) ਹਰੇਕ ਦਿਹਾੜਾ ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਗੁਜ਼ਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਇਕ ਬਾਤ ਅਨੂਪ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਨਰ ਭਾਈ ॥
ik baat anoop sunhu nar bhaa-ee.
O’ my saintly brothers, listen to this one unique thing about the wealth of Naam,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ਜਨੋ! (ਇਸ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਦੀ ਬਾਬਤ) ਇਕ ਹੋਰ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਗੱਲ ਸੁਣੋ,
ਇਸੁ ਧਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਨੈ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੪॥
is Dhan bin kahhu kinai param gat paa-ee. ||4||
and tell me, has anyone ever received the supreme spiritual state without this wealth of Naam? ||4||
ਅਤੇ ਦੱਸੋ, ਇਸ ਧਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਦੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਭਣਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਅਕਥ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
bhanat naanak akath kee kathaa sunaa-ay.
Nanak says that he is reciting to you the praises of God whose virtues are indescribable.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਕਿਸੇ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ, ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੫॥੮॥
satgur milai ta ih Dhan paa-ay. ||5||8||
When one meets the true Guru, only then he receives this wealth. ||5||8||
ਜਦੋਂ (ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥੮॥

ਸੂਰ ਸਰੁ ਸੋਸਿ ਲੈ ਸੋਮ ਸਰੁ ਪੋਖਿ ਲੈ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਰਤੁ ਸੁ ਸਨਬੰਧੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
soor sar sos lai som sar pokh lai jugat kar marat so san-banDh keejai.
O’ Yogi, (instead of focusing on breathing exercises) renounce your passion for evils, nurture your passion for virtues, remember Naam with every breath to develop righteous conduct in life and find a way to unite with God.
(ਹੇ ਜੋਗੀ!) ਤੂੰ ਤਾਮਸੀ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ, ਸਤੋ ਗੁਣੀ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਨੂੰ ਤਕੜਾ ਕਰ, ਸੁਆਸ ਸੁਆਸ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ, ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਸੁਚੱਜਾ ਢੰਗ ਬਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਨ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ) ਅਜੇਹਾ ਮੇਲ ਮਿਲਾਓ।
ਮੀਨ ਕੀ ਚਪਲ ਸਿਉ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਖੀਐ ਉਡੈ ਨਹ ਹੰਸੁ ਨਹ ਕੰਧੁ ਛੀਜੈ ॥੧॥
meen kee chapal si-o jugat man raakhee-ai udai nah hans nah kanDh chheejai. ||1||
This is how we can control our fish-like a mercurial mind, then the mind does not run after vices and the body doesn’t get weaker. ||1||
ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਮੱਛੀ ਵਰਗਾ ਚੰਚਲ ਮਨ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਨ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੌੜਦਾ, ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਮੂੜੇ ਕਾਇਚੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾ ॥

O’ fool, why are you deluded by doubt (of these yogic exercises)?
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਤੂੰ (ਪ੍ਰਾਣਾਯਾਮ ਦੇ) ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕਿਉਂ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈਂ?
ਨਹ ਚੀਨਿਆ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
nah cheeni-aa parmaanand bairaagee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Why have you not renounced the love for Maya and have not yet recognized God, the master of sublime bliss? ||1||Pause||
ਤੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਵੈਰਾਗਵਾਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਉੱਚੇ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਅਜੇ ਤਕ ਪਛਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਅਜਰ ਗਹੁ ਜਾਰਿ ਲੈ ਅਮਰ ਗਹੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਲੈ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਿ ਤਜਿ ਛੋਡਿ ਤਉ ਅਪਿਉ ਪੀਜੈ ॥
ajar gahu jaar lai amar gahu maar lai bharaat taj chhod ta-o api-o peejai.
O’ yogi, burn your worldly love, control your mind and discard your doubt which are the obstacles in the way to unite with the ever young eternal God; only then you would drink the nectar of God’s Name.
(ਹੇ ਜੋਗੀ!) ਜਰਾ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਮੇਲ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਰੋਕ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮੋਹ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਸਾੜ ਦੇ, ਮੌਤ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਘਨ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਰ ਰੱਖ, ਭਟਕਣਾ ਛੱਡ ਦੇ, ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੀ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੱਛੀ ਵਰਗਾ ਚੰਚਲ ਮਨ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਨ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲ ਦੌੜਨੋਂ ਹਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਰੀਰ ਭੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੋਣੋਂ ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
