ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥
jis gur parsaadee naam aDhaar.
One who by the Guru’s grace received the support of God’s Name,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਮਿਲ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧੇ ਕੋ ਜਨੁ ਆਪਾਰੁ ॥੭॥
kot maDhay ko jan aapaar. ||7||
is only a rare exceptional person amongst millions. ||7||.
(ਉਹ) ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਉਹ ਬੰਦਾ ਅਦੁਤੀ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਏਕੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਏਕੈ ॥
ayk buraa bhalaa sach aykai.
Whether someone is evil or virtuous, but the same eternal God dwells in all.
ਚਾਹੇ ਕੋਈ ਭਲਾ ਹੈ ਚਾਹੇ ਬੁਰਾ ਹੈ ਹਰੇਕ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ।
ਬੂਝੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਤਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਟੇਕੈ ॥
boojh gi-aanee satgur kee taykai.
O’ wise person, understand this through the support of the True Guru
ਹੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਸਮਝ ਲੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲੀ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥
gurmukh virlee ayko jaani-aa.
Those rare followers of the Guru, who realized one God pervading everywhere,
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈੈਕੇ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਸਮਝ ਲਿਆ ।
ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣਾ ਮੇਟਿ ਸਮਾਣਿਆ ॥੮॥
aavan jaanaa mayt samaani-aa. ||8||
erasing their cycle of birth and death, they remain merged in God. ||8||
ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਮਿਟਾ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੮॥
ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
jin kai hirdai aykankaar.
Those in whose heart is enshrined God,
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਰਬ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਾਚਾ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
sarab gunee saachaa beechaar.
possess all virtues and they reflect on the eternal God.
ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
gur kai bhaanai karam kamaavai.
the person who does all deeds according to the Guru’s will,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੯॥੪॥
naanak saachay saach samaavai. ||9||4||
O’ Nanak, he remains absorbed in the eternal God. ||9||4||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥੪॥

Raag Raamkalee, First Guru:
ਹਠੁ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਛੀਜੈ ॥
hath nigarahu kar kaa-i-aa chheejai.
The body is weakened by trying to control the desires of the mind by practising hatha-yoga (stubborn self-torture).
ਮਨ ਦੇ ਫੁਰਨਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਠੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਨਾਲ ਰੋਕਣ ਦੇ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ, ਸਰੀਰ ਹੀ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਵਰਤੁ ਤਪਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
varat tapan kar man nahee bheejai.
The mind is not softened or pleased by fasting or austerities.
ਵਰਤ ਰੱਖਣ ਨਾਲ, ਤਪ ਤਪਣ ਨਾਲ ਮਨ ਨਰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਪੂਜੈ ॥੧॥
raam naam sar avar na poojai. ||1||
No deed is equal to remembering God’s Name with adoration. ||1||
ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਕਰਮ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧॥
ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਮਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਸੰਗੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
gur sayv manaa har jan sang keejai.
O’ my mind, follow the Guru’s teachings, associate with the devotees of God,
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ (ਦੱਸੀ) ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰ, ਤੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਕਰ,
ਜਮੁ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨਹੀ ਸਾਕੈ ਸਰਪਨਿ ਡਸਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jam jandaar johi nahee saakai sarpan das na sakai har kaa ras peejai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and drink the elixir of God’s Name; the cruel demon of death won’t be able to touch you, and the snake-like Maya won’t be able to bite you. ||1||Pause||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਪੀ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਜਮ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੇਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ-ਸਪਣੀ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਡੰਗ ਮਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੇਗੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਵਾਦੁ ਪੜੈ ਰਾਗੀ ਜਗੁ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
vaad parhai raagee jag bheejai.
The world reads books for the sake of religeous arguments and remain happy in the worldly pleasures;
ਜਗਤ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਚਰਚਾ (ਦੇ ਪੁਸਤਕ) ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ, ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥
tarai gun bikhi-aa janam mareejai.
engrossed in the three modes of poisonous Maya, it remains in the cycle of births and deaths.
ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰੈ-ਗੁਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਖੁ ਸਹੀਜੈ ॥੨॥
raam naam bin dookh saheejai. ||2||
One has to endure suffering without remembering God’s Name. ||2||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਸਹਾਰਨਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਚਾੜਸਿ ਪਵਨੁ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
chaarhas pavan singhaasan bheejai.
A yogi raises his breath to his fore-head by exerting so much that with perspiration his seat becomes wet.
ਜੋਗੀ ਸੁਆਸ ਦਸਮ ਦੁਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਚਾੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ ਇਤਨੀ ਮੇਹਨਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਸੀਨੇ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਨ ਭੀ ਭਿੱਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਿਉਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
ni-ulee karam khat karam kareejai.
He practices Neoli Karma and six Yogic deeds for inner cleansing,
(ਆਂਦਰਾਂ ਸਾਫ਼ ਰੱਖਣ ਲਈ) ਨਿਉਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਤੇ (ਹਠ ਜੋਗ ਦੇ) ਛੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਸਾਸੁ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੩॥
raam naam bin birthaa saas leejai. ||3||
but without remembering God’s Name, the breath he draws is a waste. ||3||
ਪਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜੀਵਨ ਜੀਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪੰਚ ਅਗਨਿ ਕਿਉ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਧੀਜੈ ॥
antar panch agan ki-o Dheeraj Dheejai.
The fire of the five vices (lust, anger, greed, attachment, and ego) burns within him; how can he have any solace?
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪੰਜ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਧੀਰਜ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ?
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਕਿਉ ਸਾਦੁ ਲਹੀਜੈ ॥
antar chor ki-o saad laheejai.
When the thief (evil desires) is within him, how can he enjoy the bliss?
ਜਦ ਮੋਹ-ਚੋਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਕਾਇਆ ਗੜੁ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੪॥
gurmukh ho-ay kaa-i-aa garh leejai. ||4||
Therefore, follow the Guru’s teachings and conquer the rebellious mind residing in the body-fortress. ||4||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ-ਕਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਕੀ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਤੋ ॥੪॥
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਤੀਰਥ ਭਰਮੀਜੈ ॥
antar mail tirath bharmeejai.
If there is filth of ego and sins within our mind and we keep wandering at places of pilgrimage.
ਜੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਹਉਮੇ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹੇ, ਅਤੇ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰੀਏ,
ਮਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਸੂਚਾ ਕਿਆ ਸੋਚ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
man nahee soochaa ki-aa soch kareejai.
If our mind is not pious, then what is the use of performing ritual cleansings?
ਜੇ ਮਨ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਬਾਹਰਲੀ ਸਫਾਈ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਕੀ ਲਾਭ ਹੈ।
ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਦੋਸੁ ਕਾ ਕਉ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੫॥
kirat pa-i-aa dos kaa ka-o deejai. ||5||
Everyone is suffering the consequences of his past deeds; who else can be blamed for this?||5||
ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਲੇਖਾ ਭੁਗਤ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ;ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੋਸ਼ੀ ਠਹਿਰਾਇਐ?॥੫॥
ਅੰਨੁ ਨ ਖਾਹਿ ਦੇਹੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
ann na khaahi dayhee dukh deejai.
Those who fast and do not eat, simply torture their body.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਅੰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਉਹ ਕੇਵਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਥੀਜੈ ॥
bin gur gi-aan taripat nahee theejai.
Without the wisdom imparted by the Guru, one doesn’t get satiated.
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਮਿਲੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ) ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥੬॥
manmukh janmai janam mareejai. ||6||
The self-willed person remains in the cycle of birth and death. ||6||
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਗੇੜ ਤੁਰਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ॥੬॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੂਛਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
satgur poochh sangat jan keejai.
Seeking the teachings of the true Guru, we should associate with saintly people.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਚੈ ਨਹੀ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥
man har raachai nahee janam mareejai.
When the mind remains merged in God, we do not fall in the cycle of birth and death.
ਮਨ ਜਦੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ।
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਮੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੭॥
raam naam bin ki-aa karam keejai. ||7||
Except meditating on God’s Name, what other deeds one may do? (Because all other deeds are of no use in the end). ||7||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੋਇਆ? ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਹਠ-ਕਰਮ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਲਾਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ॥੭॥
ਊਂਦਰ ਦੂੰਦਰ ਪਾਸਿ ਧਰੀਜੈ ॥
ooNdar dooNdar paas Dhareejai.
We should drive out all kinds of doubts and evil thoughts, which make mouse-like noises in our mind.
ਚੂਹੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਅੰਦਰੋ ਅੰਦਰ ਸ਼ੋਰ ਮਚਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਸੰਕਲਪ ਵਿਕਲਪ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਕੱਢ ਦੇਣੇ ਚਾਹੀਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਧੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ॥
Dhur kee sayvaa raam raveejai.
We should lovingly remember God, which alone is the service assigned to us from the very beginning.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਧੁਰੋਂ ਮਿਲੀ ਸੇਵਾ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੮॥੫॥
naanak naam milai kirpaa parabh keejai. ||8||5||
O’ Nanak, pray to God: O’ God! bestow mercy so that I may receive the blessing of Your Name. ||8||5||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅਗੇ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ-) ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਮਿਲੇ ॥੮॥੫॥

Raag Raamkalee, First Guru:
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਉਤਭੁਜੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
antar ut-bhuj avar na ko-ee.
All the creation happens under God’s command;. except for Him, there is no other creator.
ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੀ ਉਤਪੱਤੀ (ਦੀ ਤਾਕਤ)ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਹੈ (ਉਤਪੱਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ) ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਜੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ॥
jo kahee-ai so parabh tay ho-ee.
Anything we talk about, has come from God.
ਜਿਸ ਭੀ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਏ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਜੁਗਹ ਜੁਗੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
jugah jugantar saahib sach so-ee.
Throughout the ages, He has been the same eternal God.
ਉਹੀ ਮਾਲਕ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਚਲਿਆ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਉਤਪਤਿ ਪਰਲਉ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥
utpat parla-o avar na ko-ee. ||1||
No one else causes the creation and destruction of the universe. ||1||
ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਉਤਪੱਤੀ ਤੇ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ (ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਐਸਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰੁ ॥
aisaa mayraa thaakur gahir gambheer.
Such is my profound and unfathomable God,
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਐਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਅਥਾਹ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਜਿਗਰੇ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਨਿ ਜਪਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਜਮ ਤੀਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

that only he received celestial peace who lovingly remembered Him; the demon of death does not inflict pain by remaining attuned to God’s Name. ||1||Pause||
ਕਿ ਜਿਸ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਜਪਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਸੇ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਦੂਤ ਦਾ ਬਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਹੀਰਾ ਨਿਰਮੋਲੁ ॥
naam ratan heeraa nirmol.
God’s Name is like a priceless gem or a diamond.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਇਕ ਐਸਾ) ਰਤਨ ਹੈ ਹੀਰਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ (ਜੋ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੀਮਤ ਤੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ)।
ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਅਮਰੁ ਅਤੋਲੁ ॥
saachaa saahib amar atol.
The eternal God is immortal and infinite.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅਮਰ ਹੈ, ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ l
ਜਿਹਵਾ ਸੂਚੀ ਸਾਚਾ ਬੋਲੁ ॥
jihvaa soochee saachaa bol.
Immaculate is that tongue which utters the praises of the eternal God.
ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਜੀਭ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲਦੀ ਹੈ
ਘਰਿ ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਰੋਲੁ ॥੨॥
ghar dar saachaa naahee rol. ||2||
The eternal God resides in the heart itself; there is no doubt about it. ||2||
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਕੋਈ ਭੁਲੇਖਾ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੨॥
ਇਕਿ ਬਨ ਮਹਿ ਬੈਸਹਿ ਡੂਗਰਿ ਅਸਥਾਨੁ ॥
ik ban meh baiseh doogar asthaan.
Many people (abandon their households) and live in jungles and mountains,
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਬੰਦੇ (ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ) ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਬੈਠਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਹਾੜ ਵਿਚ (ਗੁਫ਼ਾ ਆਦਿਕ) ਥਾਂ (ਬਣਾ ਕੇ) ਬੈਠਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਪਚਹਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
naam bisaar pacheh abhimaan.
but forsaking God’s Name, they are ruined by their egotistical pride.
ਪਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ (ਹੀ) ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਆ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
naam binaa ki-aa gi-aan Dhi-aan.
Without remembering God’s Name, what is the use of worldly knowledge and meditation?
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਕੋਈ ਗਿਆਨ-ਚਰਚਾ ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਅਰਥ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੩॥
gurmukh paavahi dargahi maan. ||3||
Those who follow the Guru’s teachings are honored in God’s presence. ||3||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਤੁਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਦਰ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਹਠੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਕਰੈ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
hath ahaNkaar karai nahee paavai.
One who practices obstinacy in egotism, cannot realize God
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਕਾਗ੍ਰਤਾ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਉਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਧੱਕਾ-ਜ਼ੋਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਉੱਦਮ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਭੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਪਾਠ ਪੜੈ ਲੇ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥
paath parhai lay lok sunaavai.
One who reads the scriptures only to recite to others,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਲੋਕ-ਵਿਖਾਵੇ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
