ਆਪਨ ਖੇਲੁ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤੀਜਾ ॥
aapan khayl aap varteejaa.
He Himself has staged His own play,
(ਜਗਤ ਰੂਪ) ਅਪਾਣੀ ਖੇਡ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧॥
naanak karnaihaar na doojaa. ||1||
O’ Nanak, there is no other Creator.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ l
ਜਬ ਹੋਵਤ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇਵਲ ਧਨੀ ॥
jab hovat parabh kayval Dhanee.
When there was only God, the Master,
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਿਰਫ਼ (ਆਪ ਹੀ) ਸੀ,
ਤਬ ਬੰਧ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਸ ਕਉ ਗਨੀ ॥
tab banDh mukat kaho kis ka-o ganee.
then who was considered attached to Maya or liberated from Maya?
ਤਦੋਂ ਦੱਸੋ, ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ, ਤੇ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਸਮਝੀਏ?
ਜਬ ਏਕਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
jab aykeh har agam apaar.
When there was only God, Unfathomable and Infinite,
ਜਦੋਂ ਅਗਮ ਤੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਇਕ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੀ,
ਤਬ ਨਰਕ ਸੁਰਗ ਕਹੁ ਕਉਨ ਅਉਤਾਰ ॥
tab narak surag kaho ka-un a-utaar.
then who entered hell, and who entered heaven?
ਤਦੋਂ ਦੱਸੋ, ਨਰਕਾਂ ਤੇ ਸੁਰਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਕੇਹੜੇ ਜੀਵ ਸਨ?
ਜਬ ਨਿਰਗੁਨ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
jab nirgun parabh sahj subhaa-ay.
When God was without attributes, in absolute poise,
ਜਦੋਂ ਸੁਤੇ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤ੍ਰਿਗੁਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਸੀ, (ਭਾਵ, ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਰਚੀ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ),
ਤਬ ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤਿ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਤੁ ਠਾਇ ॥
tab siv sakat kahhu kit thaa-ay.
then where was the (shiva) soul and where was the (shakti)
ਤਦ ਦੱਸੋ ਮਨ ਕਿਹੜੇ ਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਦਾ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਸੀ?
ਜਬ ਆਪਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਅਪਨੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਧਰੈ ॥
jab aapeh aap apnee jot Dharai.
When He held His Own Light unto Himself,
ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਜਗਾਈ ਬੈਠਾ ਸੀ,
ਤਬ ਕਵਨ ਨਿਡਰੁ ਕਵਨ ਕਤ ਡਰੈ ॥
tab kavan nidar kavan kat darai.
then who was fearless, and who was afraid of anyone?
ਤਦੋਂ ਕੌਣ ਨਿਡਰ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਕੌਣ ਕਿਸੇ ਤੋਂ ਡਰਦੇ ਸਨ?
ਆਪਨ ਚਲਿਤ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰ ॥
aapan chalit aap karnaihaar.
He Himself is the Performer of His own plays;
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰ ॥੨॥
naanak thaakur agam apaar. ||2||
O’ Nanak, the Supreme Master is Unfathomable and Infinite. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਅਗਮ ਤੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ l
ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਸੁਖ ਆਪਨ ਆਸਨ ॥
abhinaasee sukh aapan aasan.
When the Immortal God was absorbed in His own state of peace and poise,
ਜਦੋਂ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੌਜ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀ ਸਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਬੈਠਾ ਸੀ,
ਤਹ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਕਹੁ ਕਹਾ ਬਿਨਾਸਨ ॥
tah janam maran kaho kahaa binaasan.
then where was birth, death and destruction?
ਤਦੋਂ ਦੱਸੋ, ਜੰਮਣਾ ਮਰਨਾ ਤੇ ਮੌਤ ਕਿਥੇ ਸਨ?
ਜਬ ਪੂਰਨ ਕਰਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
jab pooran kartaa parabh so-ay.
When there was only God, the Perfect Creator,
ਜਦੋਂ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਪੂਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੀ,
ਤਬ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
tab jam kee taraas kahhu kis ho-ay.
then who was afraid of death?
ਤਦੋਂ ਦੱਸੋ, ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ?
ਜਬ ਅਬਿਗਤ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਏਕਾ ॥
jab abigat agochar parabh aykaa.
When there was only the One God, unmanifest and incomprehensible,
ਜਦੋਂ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਤੇ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਇਕ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੀ,
ਤਬ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਪਤ ਕਿਸੁ ਪੂਛਤ ਲੇਖਾ ॥
tab chitar gupat kis poochhat laykhaa.
then whom Chittar and Gupat (the recording angels) asked for the account of their deeds?
ਤਦੋਂ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਪਤ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਲੇਖਾ ਪੁੱਛ ਸਕਦੇ ਸਨ?
ਜਬ ਨਾਥ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਅਗਾਧੇ ॥
jab naath niranjan agochar agaaDhay.
When there was only the Immaculate, Incomprehensible, Unfathomable Master,
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਾਲਕ ਮਾਇਆ-ਰਹਿਤ ਅਥਾਹ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੀ,
ਤਬ ਕਉਨ ਛੁਟੇ ਕਉਨ ਬੰਧਨ ਬਾਧੇ ॥
tab ka-un chhutay ka-un banDhan baaDhay.
then who was emancipated, and who was held in the bonds of Maya?
ਤਦੋਂ ਕੌਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੁਕਤ ਸਨ ਤੇ ਕੌਣ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ?
ਆਪਨ ਆਪ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਅਚਰਜਾ ॥
aapan aap aap hee acharjaa.
That wonderful God alone is Himself like Him.
ਉਹ ਅਚਰਜ-ਰੂਪ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਨ ਰੂਪ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਪਰਜਾ ॥੩॥
naanak aapan roop aap hee uparjaa. ||3||
O’ Nanak, He Himself has created His Own Form. ||3||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਪਣਾ ਆਕਾਰ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ l
ਜਹ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪੁਰਖ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਤਾ ॥
jah nirmal purakh purakh pat hotaa.
When the immaculate Being, the Master of mankind was all by Himself,
ਜਿਸ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੀ,
ਤਹ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਆ ਧੋਤਾ ॥
tah bin mail kahhu ki-aa Dhotaa.
there was no filth of sins, so what was there to be washed clean?
ਓਥੇ ਉਹ ਮੈਲ-ਰਹਿਤ ਸੀ, ਤਾਂ ਦੱਸੋ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕੇਹੜੀ ਮੈਲ ਧੋਣੀ ਸੀ?
ਜਹ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਨਿਰਬਾਨ ॥
jah niranjan nirankaar nirbaan.
When there was only the immaculate, formless, and desire-free God,
ਜਿਥੇ ਮਾਇਆ-ਰਹਿਤ, ਆਕਾਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਤੇ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਸੀ,
ਤਹ ਕਉਨ ਕਉ ਮਾਨ ਕਉਨ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ॥
tah ka-un ka-o maan ka-un abhimaan.
then who had self esteem and who had ego?
ਉਥੇ ਮਾਣ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਣਾ ਸੀ?
ਜਹ ਸਰੂਪ ਕੇਵਲ ਜਗਦੀਸ ॥
jah saroop kayval jagdees.
When there was only the Master of the Universe,
ਜਿਥੇ ਕੇਵਲ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਸੀ,
ਤਹ ਛਲ ਛਿਦ੍ਰ ਲਗਤ ਕਹੁ ਕੀਸ ॥
tah chhal chhidar lagat kaho kees.
then who was tainted by fraud and sin?
ਓਥੇ ਦੱਸੋ, ਛਲ ਤੇ ਐਬ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਗ ਸਕਦੇ ਸਨ?
ਜਹ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
jah jot saroopee jot sang samaavai.
When the embodiment of Light (God) was immersed in His Own Light,
ਜਦੋਂ ਜੋਤਿ-ਰੂਪ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਹੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਸੀ,
ਤਹ ਕਿਸਹਿ ਭੂਖ ਕਵਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵੈ ॥
tah kiseh bhookh kavan tariptaavai.
then who was longing for Maya, and who was satisfied?
ਤਦੋਂ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਭੁੱਖ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਕੌਣ ਰੱਜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ?
ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰੁ ॥
karan karaavan karnaihaar.
The Creator is the doer of everything and the Cause of all causes.
ਕਰਤਾਰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਤੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਕਰਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤੇ ਕਾ ਨਾਹਿ ਸੁਮਾਰੁ ॥੪॥
naanak kartay kaa naahi sumaar. ||4||
O Nanak, the Creator is beyond estimation ||4||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦਾ ਅੰਦਾਜ਼ਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ
ਜਬ ਅਪਨੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਆਪਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਨਾਈ ॥
jab apnee sobhaa aapan sang banaa-ee.
When He contained His Glory within Himself,
ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀ ਨਾਲ ਬਣਾਈ ਸੀ, (ਭਾਵ, ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ)
ਤਬ ਕਵਨ ਮਾਇ ਬਾਪ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਤ ਭਾਈ ॥
tab kavan maa-ay baap mitar sut bhaa-ee.
then who was mother, father, friend, child or sibling?
ਤਦੋਂ ਕੌਣ ਮਾਂ, ਪਿਉ, ਮਿਤ੍ਰ, ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਜਾਂ ਭਰਾ ਸੀ?
ਜਹ ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਆਪਹਿ ਪਰਬੀਨ ॥
jah sarab kalaa aapeh parbeen.
When God Himself was ultimate in all the powers,
ਜਦੋਂ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਤਾਕਤਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਸੀ,
ਤਹ ਬੇਦ ਕਤੇਬ ਕਹਾ ਕੋਊ ਚੀਨ ॥
tah bayd katayb kahaa ko-oo cheen.
then where was anybody reading the Vedas and katebas (the religious books)?
ਤਦੋਂ ਕਿਥੇ ਕੋਈ ਵੇਦ (ਹਿੰਦੂ ਧਰਮ ਪੁਸਤਕ) ਤੇ ਕਤੇਬਾਂ (ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਧਰਮ ਪੁਸਤਕ) ਵਿਚਾਰਦਾ ਸੀ?
ਜਬ ਆਪਨ ਆਪੁ ਆਪਿ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੈ ॥
jab aapan aap aap ur Dhaarai.
When He kept Himself, to His own self,
ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਬੈਠਾ ਸੀ,
ਤਉ ਸਗਨ ਅਪਸਗਨ ਕਹਾ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥
ta-o sagan apasgan kahaa beechaarai.
then who considered omens to be good or bad?
ਤਦੋਂ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਸਗਨ ਕੌਣ ਸੋਚਦਾ ਸੀ?
ਜਹ ਆਪਨ ਊਚ ਆਪਨ ਆਪਿ ਨੇਰਾ ॥
jah aapan ooch aapan aap nayraa.
When He Himself was the highest and Himself lower (in rank),
ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉੱਚਾ ਅਤੇ ਆਪ ਅਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਨੀਵਾਂ ਸੀ,
ਤਹ ਕਉਨ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਕਉਨੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਚੇਰਾ ॥
tah ka-un thaakur ka-un kahee-ai chayraa.
then who was the master, and who was the servant?
ਦੱਸੋ ਮਾਲਕ ਕੌਣ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਕੌਣ ਸੀ?
ਬਿਸਮਨ ਬਿਸਮ ਰਹੇ ਬਿਸਮਾਦ ॥
bisman bisam rahay bismaad.
People are astounded by the amazing wonders of Your Creation.
ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੀ ਗਤਿ ਭਾਲਦੇ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਤੇ ਅਚਰਜ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਪਨੀ ਗਤਿ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਆਪਿ ॥੫॥
nanak apnee gat jaanhu aap. ||5||
Nanak says, O’ God only You know Your state
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅੱਗੇ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਆਖ-ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਗਤਿ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ l
ਜਹ ਅਛਲ ਅਛੇਦ ਅਭੇਦ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥
jah achhal achhayd abhayd samaa-i-aa.
When Undeceivable, Indestructible the Incomprehensible One was self-absorbed.
ਜਦੋਂ ਅਛੱਲ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਤੇ ਅਭੇਦ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਵਿਚ) ਟਿਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ,
ਊਹਾ ਕਿਸਹਿ ਬਿਆਪਤ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
oohaa kiseh bi-aapat maa-i-aa.
then who was swayed by Maya (worldly distractions)?
ਓਥੇ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਪੋਹ ਸਕਦੀ ਸੀ ?
ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਆਪਹਿ ਆਦੇਸੁ ॥
aapas ka-o aapeh aadays.
When He paid homage to Himself,
ਜਦ ਖੁਦ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ,
ਤਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਕਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਪਰਵੇਸੁ ॥
tihu gun kaa naahee parvays.
then the three modes of Maya (power, vices and virtue) did not prevail.
ਤਦ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਤਿੰਨੇ ਲੱਛਣ ਜੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਾਖਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ।
ਜਹ ਏਕਹਿ ਏਕ ਏਕ ਭਗਵੰਤਾ ॥
jah aykeh ayk ayk bhagvantaa.
When there was only the One, Supreme God alone,
ਜਦੋਂ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਕੇਵਲ ਇਕ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੀ,
ਤਹ ਕਉਨੁ ਅਚਿੰਤੁ ਕਿਸੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਚਿੰਤਾ ॥
tah ka-un achint kis laagai chintaa.
then who was not anxious, and who felt anxiety?
ਤਦੋਂ ਕੌਣ ਬੇ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਸੀ।
ਜਹ ਆਪਨ ਆਪੁ ਆਪਿ ਪਤੀਆਰਾ ॥
jah aapan aap aap patee-aaraa.
When only He Himself was there to please Him,
ਜਦੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਪਤਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੀ,
ਤਹ ਕਉਨੁ ਕਥੈ ਕਉਨੁ ਸੁਨਨੈਹਾਰਾ ॥
tah ka-un kathai ka-un sunnaihaaraa.
then who was the speaker and who was the listener?
ਤਦੋਂ ਕੌਣ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਸੀ, ਤੇ ਕੌਣ ਸੁਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੀ?
ਬਹੁ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਊਚ ਤੇ ਊਚਾ ॥
baho bay-ant ooch tay oochaa.
He is vastly infinite and the highest of the high.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਬੜਾ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਆਪਹਿ ਪਹੂਚਾ ॥੬॥
naanak aapas ka-o aapeh pahoochaa. ||6||
O’ Nanak, He alone can fathom Himself.||6||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤਕ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਅੱਪੜਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ
ਜਹ ਆਪਿ ਰਚਿਓ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਅਕਾਰੁ ॥
jah aap rachi-o parpanch akaar.
When God fashioned this universe of visible form,
ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਖੇਡ ਰਚ ਦਿੱਤੀ,
ਤਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੁ ॥
tihu gun meh keeno bisthaar.
He made the world subject to the three modes of Maya (vice, virtue, and power).
ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਖਲੇਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਤਹ ਭਈ ਕਹਾਵਤ ॥
paap punn tah bha-ee kahaavat.
Then the concept of sin and virtue came into existence.
