ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਬਿਸਰੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਦੀਆ ॥
so ki-o bisrai jin sabh kichh dee-aa.
Why forget Him, who has given us everything?
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਿਉਂ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਏ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਬਿਸਰੈ ਜਿ ਜੀਵਨ ਜੀਆ ॥
so ki-o bisrai je jeevan jee-aa.
Why forget Him, who is the Life of the living beings?
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਿਉਂ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਏ ਜੋ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ?
ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਬਿਸਰੈ ਜਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਖੈ ॥
so ki-o bisrai je agan meh raakhai.
Why forget Him, who preserves us in the fire of the womb?
ਉਹ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਿਉਂ ਵਿਸਰ ਜਾਏ ਜੋ (ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਦੀ) ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਬਚਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਕੋ ਬਿਰਲਾ ਲਾਖੈ ॥
gur parsaad ko birlaa laakhai.
Rare is the one who realizes this by the Guru’s Grace,
ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ (ਇਹ ਗੱਲ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਬਿਸਰੈ ਜਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਤੇ ਕਾਢੈ ॥
so ki-o bisrai je bikh tay kaadhai.
Why forget Him, who saves us from the poison of worldly illusions?.
ਉਹ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਿਉਂ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਏ ਜੋ (ਮਾਇਆ-ਰੂਪ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕਾ ਟੂਟਾ ਗਾਢੈ ॥
janam janam kaa tootaa gaadhai.
and reunites with Him the mortal separated from Him for countless lifetimes?
ਅਤੇ ਕਈ ਜਨਮ ਦੇ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ) ਜੋੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਤਤੁ ਇਹੈ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ॥
gur poorai tat ihai bujhaa-i-aa.
The devotees,whom the perfect Guru has made to understand this essence,
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਸਮਝਾਈ ਹੈ,
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੪॥
parabh apnaa naanak jan Dhi-aa-i-aa. ||4|||
O’ Nanak, they have meditated on their Master with love and devotion.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ
ਸਾਜਨ ਸੰਤ ਕਰਹੁ ਇਹੁ ਕਾਮੁ ॥
saajan sant karahu ih kaam.
O’ my Saintly friends, take up this task,
ਹੇ ਸੱਜਣ ਜਨੋ! ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਇਹ ਕੰਮ ਕਰੋ,
ਆਨ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਜਪਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ
aan ti-aag japahu har naam.
of meditating on God’s Name and renounce all other ritualistic practices.
ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ (ਆਹਰ) ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਹੁ;
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥
simar simar simar sukh paavhu.
Constantly meditate on God’s Name and enjoy the taste of bliss.
ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰੋ ਤੇ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ ਸੁਖ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰੋ;
ਆਪਿ ਜਪਹੁ ਅਵਰਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਵਹੁ ॥
aap japahu avrah naam japaavhu.
Meditate on Naam yourself and inspire others to do the same.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪ ਜਪਹੁ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਜਪਾਵਹੁ।
ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਤਰੀਐ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
bhagat bhaa-ay taree-ai sansaar.
By loving devotional worship, one crosses the world-ocean of vices.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਹੁਂ ਲਾਇਆਂ ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ (ਸਮੁੰਦਰ) ਤਰੀਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਤਨੁ ਹੋਸੀ ਛਾਰੁ ॥
bin bhagtee tan hosee chhaar.
Consider this human body wasted if there is no devotional worship of God.
ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਸਰਬ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਸੂਖ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
sarab kali-aan sookh niDh naam.
Naam is the treasure of all good fortune and peace.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭਲੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈ,
ਬੂਡਤ ਜਾਤ ਪਾਏ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮੁ ॥
boodat jaat paa-ay bisraam.
Even the one drowning in vices, gets saved by meditating on Naam.
ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਸਰਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਸਗਲ ਦੂਖ ਕਾ ਹੋਵਤ ਨਾਸੁ ॥
sagal dookh kaa hovat naas.
All sorrows vanish by remembering God.
ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਗੁਨਤਾਸੁ ॥੫॥
naanak naam japahu guntaas. ||5||
Therefore, O’ Nanak, meditate on the Naam, the treasure of virtues.
(ਤਾਂ ਤੇ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਨਾਮ ਜਪਹੁ, (ਨਾਮ ਹੀ) ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ (ਹੈ)
ਉਪਜੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਉ ॥
upjee pareet paraym ras chaa-o.
The one in whom has welled up love, affection and yearning for God,
(ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ) ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਤੇ ਚਾਉ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,
ਮਨ ਤਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਇਹੀ ਸੁਆਉ ॥
man tan antar ihee su-aa-o.
desires only this gift of Naam.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਤਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਹੀ ਚਾਹ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਮਿਲੇ)।
ਨੇਤ੍ਰਹੁ ਪੇਖਿ ਦਰਸੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
naytarahu paykh daras sukh ho-ay.
Beholding His Blessed Vision (following Guru’s advice), he feels blessed.
ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਖ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਮਨੁ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਸਾਧ ਚਰਨ ਧੋਇ ॥
man bigsai saaDh charan Dho-ay.
His mind blossoms in ecstasy by sincerely following the teachings of the Guru.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਧੋ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਖਿੜ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਰੰਗੁ ॥
bhagat janaa kai man tan rang.
The mind and body of God’s devotees are infused with His Love.
ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਰਲਾ ਕੋਊ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੰਗੁ ॥
birlaa ko-oo paavai sang.
Rare is the one who joins the company of such devotees of God.
ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਸੀਬ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਏਕ ਬਸਤੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਕਰਿ ਮਇਆ ॥
ayk basat deejai kar ma-i-aa.
O’ God, mercifully bless us with this one gift,
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਇਕ ਨਾਮ-ਵਸਤੂ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਦੇਹ,
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਲਇਆ ॥
gur parsaad naam jap la-i-aa.
so that by Guru’s Grace, we may be able to meditate on Your Name.
ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਸਕੀਏ।
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਉਪਮਾ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
taa kee upmaa kahee na jaa-ay.
His greatness cannot be described;
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਰਬ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੬॥
naanak rahi-aa sarab samaa-ay. ||6||
O’ Nanak, He is all pervading.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਭ ਥਾਈਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਖਸੰਦ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ॥
parabh bakhsand deen da-i-aal.
O’ all forgiving and merciful God of the meek,
ਹੇ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਨਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ ਗਰੀਬਾਂ ਤੇ ਤਰਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ!
ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲ ਸਦਾ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ॥
bhagat vachhal sadaa kirpaal.
O’ lover of meditation and ever merciful,
ਹੇ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ! ਹੇ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਪ੍ਰਭ!
ਅਨਾਥ ਨਾਥ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੁਪਾਲ ॥
anaath naath gobind gupaal.
O’ the support of the support-less, protector of the world.
ਹੇ ਅਨਾਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਥ! ਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ! ਹੇ ਗੋਪਾਲ!
ਸਰਬ ਘਟਾ ਕਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ॥
sarab ghataa karat partipaal.
O’ the sustainer of all beings.
ਹੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਰੀਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ!
ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਾਰਣ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥
aad purakh kaaran kartaar.
O’ the Primal Being, O’ the Creator of the universe.
ਹੇ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ (ਜਗਤ ਦੇ) ਮੂਲ! ਹੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ!
ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰ ॥
bhagat janaa kay paraan aDhaar.
O’ the Support of life of the devotees.
ਹੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ!
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਜਪੈ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਪੁਨੀਤ ॥
jo jo japai so ho-ay puneet.
Whoever meditates on You is sanctified,
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪਵ੍ਰਿੱਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਲਾਵੈ ਮਨ ਹੀਤ ॥
bhagat bhaa-ay laavai man heet.
while focusing the mind in loving devotional worship.
ਭਗਤੀ-ਭਾਵ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਟਿਕਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਉਧਾਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।)
ਹਮ ਨਿਰਗੁਨੀਆਰ ਨੀਚ ਅਜਾਨ ॥
ham nirgunee-aar neech ajaan.
we are meritless, ignorant, and malicious,
ਅਸੀਂ ਨੀਚ ਹਾਂ, ਅੰਞਾਣ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਗੁਣ-ਹੀਨ ਹਾਂ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਸਰਨਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥੭॥
naanak tumree saran purakh bhagvaan. ||7||
O’ Nanak, pray and say, O’ God, we have come to Your sanctuary. ||7||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਆਖ-) ਹੇ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ! ਹੇ ਭਗਵਾਨ! ਅਸੀਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਏ ਹਾਂ
ਸਰਬ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਮੋਖ ਪਾਏ ॥
sarab baikunth mukat mokh paa-ay. v
Consider one has received all the the heavenly comforts, liberation from vicesand deliverance from cycles of birth and death,
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਰਗ ਤੇ ਮੋਖ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਏ ਹਨ,
ਏਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਏ ॥
ayk nimakh har kay gun gaa-ay.
if one has sung the praises of God even for an instant.
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਅੱਖ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਫੋਰ ਮਾਤ੍ਰ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ਹਨ।
ਅਨਿਕ ਰਾਜ ਭੋਗ ਬਡਿਆਈ ॥
anik raaj bhog badi-aa-ee.
Consider one has received the powe of countless kingdoms, pleasures, and glory.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਰਾਜ-ਭੋਗ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਤੇ ਵਡਿਆਈਆਂ ਮਿਲ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਈ ॥
har kay naam kee kathaa man bhaa-ee.
who loves to sing the praises of God.
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ-ਬਾਤ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੈ।
ਬਹੁ ਭੋਜਨ ਕਾਪਰ ਸੰਗੀਤ ॥
baho bhojan kaapar sangeet.
Consider one has received all the worldly pleasure of beautiful clothes, tasty foods and soothing music
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੇ ਖਾਣੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਤੇ ਰਾਗ-ਰੰਗ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ।
ਰਸਨਾ ਜਪਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨੀਤ ॥
rasnaa japtee har har neet.
who always remembers God and utters God’s Name.
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਭਲੀ ਸੁ ਕਰਨੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਧਨਵੰਤ ॥
bhalee so karnee sobhaa Dhanvant.
The deeds of that person are virtuous, he earns glory and is spiritually wealthy,
ਉਸੇ ਦਾ ਆਚਰਨ ਭਲਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ, ਓਹੀ ਧਨਾਢ ਹੈ,
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਬਸੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰ ਮੰਤ ॥
hirdai basay pooran gur mant.
in whose heart dwells Guru’s teachings.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦੇਹੁ ਨਿਵਾਸ ॥
saaDhsang parabh dayh nivaas.
O God, grant me a place in the Company of the Holy.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਆਪਣੇ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਥਾਂ ਦੇਹ l
ਸਰਬ ਸੂਖ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰਗਾਸ ॥੮॥੨੦॥

O’ Nanak, by abiding in whose company, all comforts become manifest |20||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l

ਸਰਗੁਨ ਨਿਰਗੁਨ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਆਪਿ ॥
sargun nirgun nirankaar sunn samaaDhee aap.
The formless God Himself is the one who possesses all attributes and no attributes. He Himself remains in absolute meditation.
ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ( ਆਕਾਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ) ਤ੍ਰਿਗੁਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਗਤ ਰੂਪ) ਭੀ ਆਪ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਭੀ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਅਫੁਰ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਭੀ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਨ ਕੀਆ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਾਪਿ ॥੧॥
aapan kee-aa naankaa aapay hee fir jaap. ||1||
O’ Nanak, He Himself has created this universe and through His creation He meditates on Himself. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ l

ਜਬ ਅਕਾਰੁ ਇਹੁ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੇਤਾ ॥
jab akaar ih kachh na daristaytaa.
When this world had not yet appeared in any visible form,
ਜਦੋਂ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਜੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਅਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਸ਼ਕਲ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦੀ ਸੀ,
ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਤਬ ਕਹ ਤੇ ਹੋਤਾ ॥
paap punn tab kah tay hotaa.
who then committed sins and performed good deeds?
ਤਦੋਂ ਪਾਪ ਜਾਂ ਪੁੰਨ ਕਿਸ (ਜੀਵ) ਤੋਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ?
ਜਬ ਧਾਰੀ ਆਪਨ ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ ॥
jab Dhaaree aapan sunn samaaDh.
When the God Himself was in profound meditation,
ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਅਫੁਰ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਾਲੀ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ,
ਤਬ ਬੈਰ ਬਿਰੋਧ ਕਿਸੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਕਮਾਤਿ ॥
tab bair biroDh kis sang kamaat.
then against whom were hate and jealousy directed?
ਤਦੋਂ (ਕਿਸ ਨੇ) ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਵੈਰ-ਵਿਰੋਧ ਕਮਾਉਣਾ ਸੀ?
ਜਬ ਇਸ ਕਾ ਬਰਨੁ ਚਿਹਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਪਤ ॥
jab is kaa baran chihan na jaapat.
When there was no color or shape of this world to be seen,
ਜਦੋਂ ਇਸ (ਜਗਤ) ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਰੰਗ-ਰੂਪ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ,
ਤਬ ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਸਹਿ ਬਿਆਪਤ ॥
tab harakh sog kaho kiseh bi-aapat.
then who experienced joy and sorrow?
ਤਦੋਂ ਦੱਸੋ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਜਾਂ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੋਹ ਸਕਦੇ ਸਨ?
ਜਬ ਆਪਨ ਆਪ ਆਪਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ॥
jab aapan aap aap paarbarahm.
When the Supreme God was alone by Himself,
ਜਦੋਂ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੇਵਲ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਸੀ,
ਤਬ ਮੋਹ ਕਹਾ ਕਿਸੁ ਹੋਵਤ ਭਰਮ ॥
tab moh kahaa kis hovat bharam.
then where was emotional attachment, and who had doubts?
ਤਦੋਂ ਮੋਹ ਕਿਥੇ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ, ਤੇ ਭਰਮ-ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ ਸਨ?
