The Guru Granth Sahib is the central religious scripture of Sikhism, regarded by Sikhs as the eternal Guru following the ten human Gurus. Compiled by the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan, in 1604, it includes the hymns and teachings of the Sikh Gurus from Guru Nanak to Guru Tegh Bahadur, as well as contributions from various saints and poets of different backgrounds, such as Kabir and Farid.
The Guru Granth Sahib consists of 1,430 pages and covers a wide range of themes, including the nature of God, the importance of truthful living, the value of meditation on God’s name, and the rejection of superstitions and rituals.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਦਰਵਾਰੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸਦਾ ਭਵਾਤਿ ॥੫॥੧॥੪॥
kaho naanak bhagat soheh darvaaray manmukh sadaa bhavaat. ||5||1||4||
Nanak says, the devotees are honored in the Court of the Almighty, whereas the self conceited persons or Manmukh wander forever in the cycles of birth & death.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ-ਜਗਿਆਸੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ , ਆਪ ਹੁਦਰੇ ਸਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਏ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ |
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸਰਬਤਿ ਰਵਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਉਪਜਿਆ ਬਿਸੁਆਸੋ ॥
antar baahar sarbat ravi-aa man upji-aa bisu-aaso.
Then they believe with full conviction that God pervades everywhere, both within and without.
ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਅੰਦਰ ਬਾਹਰ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ।
ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵੁਠਾ ਆਇ ॥
ha-o balihaaree tin ka-o jin har man vuthaa aa-ay.
I dedicate my life to those, within whose minds the God has come to dwell .
ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਹਾਂ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਸਭਾ ਏਵ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾ ਨੇੜੈ ਨਾ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
gur sabhaa ayv na paa-ee-ai naa nayrhai naa door.
The true benefit of Guru’s company is not obtained by bodily remaining near or far from Him.
(ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਜਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਬੈਠਿਆਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸੰਗ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਸਭਿ ਤੁਧੈ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਨਿਤ ਕਰਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
sabh tuDhai paashu mangday nit kar ardaas.
Everyone begs from You, by praying to You day after day.
ਇਸੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ ਜੋਦੜੀਆਂ ਕਰਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੇ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਹੀ ਦਾਨ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਥਾਇ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥
naanak sayvaa surat kamaavnee jo har bhaavai so thaa-ay paa-ay. ||2||
O’ Nanak, follow the teaching of the Guru with full attention because only the devotion which is pleasing to God is approved.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਉਂਞ ਤਾਂ) ਜੋ ਸੇਵਾ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੀ ਲੱਗੇ ਉਹੀ ਪਰਵਾਨ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ) ਸੇਵਾ ਭੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਹਰਿ ਨਿਮਾਣਿਆ ਤੂੰ ਮਾਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਡਾਢੀ ਹੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਡਾਢਿਆ ॥
har nimaani-aa tooN maan har daadhee hooN tooN daadhi-aa.
O’ God, You are the pride of the pride-less. You are the strongest of the strong.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਤੇ ਆਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, ਤੂੰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ। ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵਧੀਕ ਡਾਢਾ ਹੈਂ।.
ਮਿਰਤਕ ਪਿੰਡਿ ਪਦ ਮਦ ਨਾ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਏਕੁ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਸੁ ਨਾਗਾ ॥
mirtak pind pad mad naa ahinis ayk agi-aan so naagaa.
You took no pride in your perishable body and status. Day and night you were absorbed in remembering God, and there was complete absence of ignorance.
ਤੈਨੂੰ ਤਦੋਂ) ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਹੋਂਦ ਦਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ, ਦਿਨੇ ਰਾਤ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ (ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਸੈਂ), (ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਅਗਿਆਨ ਦੀ ਅਣਹੋਂਦ ਸੀ।
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਕਾ ਮੈ ਦੇਇ ਸਨੇਹਾ॥
mayray pareetam kaa mai day-ay sanayhaa.
Bring me a message from my Beloved.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸੁਨੇਹਾ ਦੇਵੇ,
ਸੋ ਕੰਮੁ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਜੋ ਤੇਰੀ ਘਾਲੀ ॥
so kamm suhaylaa jo tayree ghaalee.
O’ God, meditating on Your Name is the most sublime deed for me.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਕੰਮ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਉਹ ਕੰਮ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸੁਖਾਵਾਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
