The Guru Granth Sahib is a collection of chants or hymns from Sikh Gurus and other saints from diverse backgrounds, which finally undertook compilation in its present form by Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, in 1708. Known as the “fifth version,” this assiduously puts together an earlier compilation by Guru Arjan, the fifth Sikh Guru in 1604, with additional hymns. It contains 1,430 pages of Gurmukhi scripture, with not only the teachings of the first five Sikh Gurus but Guru Tegh Bahadur also included. In fact, it includes the teachings of many Hindu and Muslim saints and poets, which show a universal message.
God is one; the Name of God has to be meditated upon. Life is to be lived according to truth, compassion, and service. For all this, the Sikhs believe that the Guru Granth Sahib is their eternal Guru. It is a collection of hymns, arranged in accordance with their ragas or musical measures, containing songs of deeper spiritual messages, ethical directions, and visions about contemporary social norms and tendencies of spiritual realization. Hence, the text not only works as a religious scripture but also inspires and guides millions of Sikhs worldwide.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤੈ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
manmukh mugaDh har naam na chaytai birthaa janam gavaa-i-aa.
The foolish self-willed person does who does not remember the God’s Name; he wastes away his life in vain.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।.
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
mayray man mai har bin avar na ko-ay.
O’ my mind, there is none other than God for me.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਕਿਤੇ ਭੀ) ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ।

Raag Sorath, Fifth Guru:
ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਗਵਾਤਾ ॥
man mayray jin apunaa bharam gavaataa.
O’ my mind, one who has dispelled his own doubt,
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮੇਰ-ਤੇਰ ਗਵਾ ਲਈ,
ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਾਨੀ ॥
simrahu har har naam paraanee.
O’ human being, remember God’s Name with loving devotion.
ਹੇ ਬੰਦੇ! ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਕਰ।

ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਕਿਰਪਾਲੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਆਪੇ ਸੁਣੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ॥
ho-ay da-i-aal kirpaal parabh thaakur aapay sunai baynantee.
When God becomes merciful and compassionate on a person, He Himself listens to his prayer,
ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ) ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸੁਣ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅਚਰਜੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
achraj tayree vadi-aa-ee.
O’ God, astonishing is Your grace.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!ਤੇਰੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਕਰ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਨ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਸੇਈ ਸਾਦੁ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਜਿਉ ਗੁੰਗੇ ਮਿਠਿਆਈ ॥
jin chaakhi-aa say-ee saad jaanan ji-o gungay mithi-aa-ee.
Only those who have relished the nectar of God’s Naam know its taste, but they cannot describe it just as a dumb person cannot describe the taste of sweets.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਰਸ) ਚੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਦਾ) ਸੁਆਦ ਉਹੀ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ (ਦੱਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ), ਜਿਵੇਂ ਗੁੰਗੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਖਾਧੀ ਮਿਠਿਆਈ (ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਗੁੰਗਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ)।
