These many teachings and spiritual wisdom, hence, found a way into the Guru Granth Sahib from these Sikh Gurus, such as Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Angad Dev Ji, Guru Amar Das Ji, Guru Ram Das Ji, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, and several Hindu and Muslim saints. Starting from the basics of love, it delivers a universal message to move toward love, equality, and love toward God. It is written in Gurmukhi script, subdivided into sections called Ragas.
For Sikhs, the Granth Sahib is a book of spiritual and inspirational learning. It is both recited and sung as part of daily prayers and ceremonies in Gurdwaras—Sikh temples. The scripture teaches selfless service, equality, and the quest for spiritual enlightenment. Guru Granth Sahib brought forward such values as peace, compassion, and unity, becoming light for Sikhs all around the world.
ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਰਾਗ ਭੈਰਉ ਵੈ ਕਰਹੀ ॥
paratham raag bhairo vai karhee.
The first recital in the morning is done in Raag Bhairo,
ਪਹਿਲੇ ਰਾਗੀ ਜਨ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਸੂਰਜ ਉਦੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਭੈਰਉ ਰਾਗ ਉਚਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੀ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੨੯॥
har jan har antar nahee naanak saachee maan. ||29||
O’ Nanak, take this as absolute truth, that there is no difference between God and God’s devotee. ||29||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਸੱਚੀ ਮੰਨੋ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਗਤ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ॥੨੯॥
ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਿਹ ਪਰਸੈ ਨਹੀ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
sukh dukh jih parsai nahee lobh moh abhimaan.
One who is not touched (does not spiritually waver) by pleasure or sorrow and who is not motivated by greed, emotional attachment and egotistical pride:
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ) ਨੂੰ ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੋਹ ਸਕਦਾ, ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੋਹ ਸਕਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖ ਵੇਲੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਡੋਲਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਆਪਣਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ),
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਨਿਸਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਭਜੈ ਰੂਪ ਰਾਮ ਤਿਹ ਜਾਨੁ ॥
jo paraanee nis din bhajai roop raam tih jaan.
One who always lovingly rememberes God, deem that human being as the embodiment of God.
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਰਾਤ ਦਿਨ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਜਪਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਸਮਝੋ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਪਾਸਿ ਬਹਿਠਿਆ ਸੋਹੀਐ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ॥੨੨॥
jis paas bahithi-aa sohee-ai sabhnaaN daa vaysaahu. ||22||
sitting beside (remembering with love) whom,one looks beauteous; He is the support of all.||22||
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਬੈਠਿਆਂਜੀਵ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਦਿਸਦਾ ਹੈ,ਉਹ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ॥੨੨॥

Shalok, Fifth Guru:
ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸਲੋਕ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਇ ॥
satgur vich amrit naam hai amrit kahai kahaa-ay.
Within the true Guru is enshrined the ambrosial nectar of God’s Name; it is this ambrosial Name which he himself recites and makes others to recite.
(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ) ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਗੁਰੂ ਆਪ ਇਹ) ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ-ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ (ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਪਾਸੋ) ਜਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਚਿੰਤਵੈ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਬਧਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
an-din chintaa chintvai chintaa baDhaa jaa-ay.
Every day he worries about worldly affairs and ultimately departs from the world bound with anxiety.
ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀਆਂ) ਸੋਚਾਂ ਸੋਚਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੋਚਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ (ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਤੋਂ) ਤੁਰ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ਮੋਹ ਮਾਇ ॥
bin naavai sabh dukh hai dukh-daa-ee moh maa-ay.
Everything without remembering God’s Name is the source of sorrow, and love for Maya is nothing but misery.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ਸਾਬਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰਾ (ਉੱਦਮ) ਦੁਖ (ਦਾ ਹੀ ਮੂਲ) ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਇ ॥੨੨॥
naanak gur pooray tay paa-i-aa sahj mili-aa parabh aa-ay. ||22||
O’ Nanak, they have attained the state of spiritual poise through the perfect Guru and God has revealed Himself to them. ||22||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨੨॥
