ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਗੁਰ ਵਾਕਿ ॥
har jee-o sabad pachhaanee-ai saach ratay gur vaak.
It’s by following the Guru’s word, and by being imbued with truth, that God is realized.
Ni kwa kufuata neno la Guru, na kujawa na ukweli, ndipo Mungu anagunduliwa.
ਤਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਸਚ ਘਰਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਓਤਾਕੁ ॥
tit tan mail na lag-ee sach ghar jis otaak..
The person whose mind is always attuned to the service of God is never soiled with filth (of worldly attachments).
Mtu ambaye akili yake daima imemakinika kwa huduma ya Mungu haichafuliwi na uchafu (wa viambatisho vya kidunia).
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਸਾਕੁ ॥੫॥
nadar karay sach paa-ee-ai bin naavai ki-aa saak. ||5||
It is only when God casts His merciful glance, one obtains His Eternal Naam and relationship with Him cannot be established without meditating on Naam.
Ni wakati tu Mungu anatupa mtazamo wake wa huruma, ndio mtu anapata Naam yake ya milele na uhusiano naye hauwezi kuanzishwa bila kutafakari kuhusu Naam.
ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਸੇ ਸੁਖੀਏ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰਿ ॥
jinee sach pachhaani-aa say sukhee-ay jug chaar.
Those who have realized the Truth are at peace throughout the four ages.
Wale ambao wamegundua Ukweli wamo katika amani kupitia enzi nne zote.
ਹਉਮੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਕੈ ਸਚੁ ਰਖਿਆ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥
ha-umai tarisnaa maar kai sach rakhi-aa ur Dhaar.
Subduing their egotism and desires, they keep the True Name enshrined in their hearts.
Wakitawala ubinafsi na hamu zao, wanaweka Jina la kweli vizuri mioyoni mwao.
ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੬॥
jag meh laahaa ayk naam paa-ee-ai gur veechaar. ||6||
In this world, the true profit is God’s Name which is earned by contemplating the Guru’s word.
Katika dunia hii, faida ya kweli ni Jina la Mungu ambalo linapatwa kwa kutafakari neno la Guru.
ਸਾਚਉ ਵਖਰੁ ਲਾਦੀਐ ਲਾਭੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
saacha-o vakhar laadee-ai laabh sadaa sach raas.
Acquire the commodity of Naam, and this commodity always yield spiritual gains.
Pata bidhaa ya Naam, na bidhaa hii daima inazaa faida za kiroho.
ਸਾਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਬੈਸਈ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਚੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
saachee dargeh bais-ee bhagat sachee ardaas.
They who are imbued with true devotion and make a sincere prayer are granted seat in God’s court.
Wale ambao wamejawa na ibada ya kweli na wanawasilisha sala aminifu wanapewa kiti katika mahakama ya Mungu.
ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਲੇਖਾ ਨਿਬੜੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਿ ॥੭॥
pat si-o laykhaa nibrhai raam naam pargaas. ||7||
Being enlightened with God’s Name, their account (of good and bad deeds) is settled with honor.
Kwa kuangazwa na Jina la Mungu, rekodi yao (ya vitendo vizuri na vibaya) inatatuliwa kwa heshima.
ਊਚਾ ਊਚਉ ਆਖੀਐ ਕਹਉ ਨ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
oochaa oocha-o aakhee-ai kaha-o na daykhi-aa jaa-ay.
O’ God, You are higher than the highest, but simply by saying, You cannot be perceived.
Ee Mungu, wewe upo juu zaidi kwa wote, lakini kwa kusema tu, Wewe huwezi kutambulika.
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਏਕੁ ਤੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਦਿਖਾਇ ॥
jah daykhaa tah ayk tooN satgur dee-aa dikhaa-ay.
Wherever I look, I see only You. The True Guru has helped me to see You.
Popote niangaliapo, nakuona Wewe tu. Guru wa kweli amenisaidia kukuona Wewe.
ਜੋਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥੮॥੩॥
jot nirantar jaanee-ai naanak sahj subhaa-ay. ||8||3||
O’ Nanak, now I intuitively see Your Divine light within all.
Ee Nanak, sasa naona mwanga wako takatifu ndani mwa yote.

ਮਛੁਲੀ ਜਾਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਸਰੁ ਖਾਰਾ ਅਸਗਾਹੁ ॥
machhulee jaal na jaani-aa sar khaaraa asgaahu.
Living in the fathomless briny ocean, the fish didn’t pay attention to the net.
Kuishi katika bahari ya maji ya chumvi isiyoeleweka, samaki hawakutilia maanane wavu.
ਅਤਿ ਸਿਆਣੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਕਿਉ ਕੀਤੋ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ॥
at si-aanee sohnee ki-o keeto vaysaahu.
She was extremely wise and beautiful but why did she trust the bait.
Yeye alikuwa mwenye hekima na urembo lakini kwa nini aliamini chambo.
ਕੀਤੇ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਪਾਕੜੀ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਟਲੈ ਸਿਰਾਹੁ ॥੧॥
keetay kaaran paakrhee kaal na talai siraahu. ||1||
On her own doing, she was caught and now death cannot be avoided.
Kwa kufanya kwake mwenyewe, alinaswa na sasa kifo hakiwezi kuepukwa.
ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਇਉ ਸਿਰਿ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਕਾਲੁ ॥
bhaa-ee ray i-o sir jaanhu kaal.
O’ brother, just like this, see death hovering over your head.
Ee ndugu, kwa njia kama hii, ona kifo kikining’inia juu ya kichwa chako.
ਜਿਉ ਮਛੀ ਤਿਉ ਮਾਣਸਾ ਪਵੈ ਅਚਿੰਤਾ ਜਾਲੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ji-o machhee ti-o maansaa pavai achintaa jaal. ||1|| rahaa-o.
People are just like this fish; unaware, the noose of death descends upon them.
Watu ni kama samaki huyu; bila fahamu, kitanzi cha kifo kinashuka kwao.
ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧੋ ਕਾਲ ਕੋ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਾਲੁ ਅਫਾਰੁ ॥
sabh jag baaDho kaal ko bin gur kaal afaar.
The entire world is subject to death (not once but countless times); without seeking the refuge of the Guru, the fear of death is inevitable.
Dunia mzima imetiishwa kwa kifo (sio mara moja bali nyakati zisizohesabika); bila kutafuta kimbilio cha Guru, uoga wa kifo hauwezi kuepukwa.
ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥
sach ratay say ubray dubiDhaa chhod vikaar.
They who are imbued with the love of eternal God, forsake duality and vices, and are saved from the fear of death.
Wao ambao wamejawa na upendo wa Mungu wa milele, wanaacha uwili na maovu, na wanaokolewa kutoka uoga wa kifo.
ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਣੈ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸਚਿਆਰ ॥੨॥
ha-o tin kai balihaarnai dar sachai sachiaar. ||2||
I dedicate myself to such devotees, who are recognized as true and honest in God’scourt.
Najiweka wakfu kwa wafuasi kama hao, ambao wanatambuliwa kama wa kweli na waaminifu katika mahakama ya Mungu.
ਸੀਚਾਨੇ ਜਿਉ ਪੰਖੀਆ ਜਾਲੀ ਬਧਿਕ ਹਾਥਿ ॥
seechaanay ji-o pankhee-aa jaalee baDhik haath.
Think of the hawk preying on the birds, and the net in the hands of the hunter.
Fikiria kuhusu kipanga akiwinda ndege wengine, na wavu mikononi mwa mwindaji.
ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਹੋਰਿ ਫਾਥੇ ਚੋਗੈ ਸਾਥਿ ॥
gur raakhay say ubray hor faathay chogai saath.
Those who are protected by the Guru are saved; the rest are caught by the bait.
Wale wanaolindwa na Guru wanakombolewa; waliobaki wananaswa na chambo.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਚੁਣਿ ਸੁਟੀਅਹਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸੰਗੀ ਸਾਥਿ ॥੩॥
bin naavai chun sutee-ah ko-ay na sangee saath. ||3||
Without God’s Name, they are picked up and thrown away; they have no friends or companions.
Bila jina la Mungu, wanachukuliwa na kutupwa, hawana rafiki wala wendani.
ਸਚੋ ਸਚਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਾ ਥਾਨੁ ॥
sacho sachaa aakhee-ai sachay sachaa thaan.
we should always meditate on the truest of the true God, whose seat is eternal.
Daima tunafaa kutafakari kuhusu Mungu wa kweli kabisa, ambaye kiti chake ni cha milele.
ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚਾ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
jinee sachaa mani-aa tin man sach Dhi-aan.
Those who accept Him as True, attune their minds to Him.
Wale wanaomkubali kama wa Kweli, wanamakinisha akili zao kwake.
ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਸੂਚੇ ਜਾਣੀਅਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥੪॥
man mukh soochay jaanee-ahi gurmukh jinaa gi-aan. ||4||
Pure are deemed the thoughts and words of those who, through the Guru, obtained the divine knowledge.
Yanafikiriwa kuwa safi maneno na fikira za wale ambao, kupitia kwa Guru, wamepata maarifa takatifu.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਗੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਦੇਇ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥
satgur agai ardaas kar saajan day-ay milaa-ay.
Offer your most sincere prayers to the True Guru, so that He may unite you with God, your Best Friend.
Wasilisha sala zako aminifu kabisa kwa Guru wa kweli, ndiposa akuunganishe na Mungu, rafiki wako wa dhati.
ਸਾਜਨਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
saajan mili-ai sukh paa-i-aa jamdoot mu-ay bikh khaa-ay.
Upon meeting this divine friend, you would obtain so much peace as if the demon of death has died by eating poison.
Unapokutana na rafiki huyu mtakatifu, utapokea amani nyingi kana kwamba pepo wa kifo alikufa kwa kula sumu.
ਨਾਵੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹਉ ਵਸਾਂ ਨਾਉ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੫॥
naavai andar ha-o vasaaN naa-o vasai man aa-ay. ||5||
I wish that I may dwell in Naam andNaam may keep dwelling within my mind.
Naomba niweze kuishi katika Naam na Naam iendelee kuishi akilini mwangu.
ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
baajh guroo gubaar hai bin sabdai boojh na paa-ay.
Without the Guru, there is pitch darkness of ignorance. Way out of this darkness cannot be found without the Guru’s word.
Bila Guru, kuna tu giza totoro ya ujinga. Njia ya kutoka kwa giza hii haiwezi kupatwa bila neno la Guru.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
gurmatee pargaas ho-ay sach rahai liv laa-ay.
Through the Guru’s teachings, the divine Light shines (in the mind), and the mortal remains absorbed in the love of eternal God.
Kupitia mafundisho ya Guru, mwanga takatifu unang’aa (akilini), na binadamu anabaki amezama katika upendo wa Mungu wa milele.
ਤਿਥੈ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਸੰਚਰੈ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੬॥
tithai kaal na sanchrai jotee jot samaa-ay. ||6||
In that state of mind, one is beyond the reach of death; because then the one’s light remains merged in the divine Light.
Katika hali hiyo ya kiakili, mtu hawezi kufikiwa na kifo; kwa sababu wakati huo mwanga wa mtu unabaki umeunganishwa na Mwanga takatifu.
ਤੂੰਹੈ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
tooNhai saajan tooN sujaan tooN aapay maylanhaar.
You are my Best Friend; You are All-knowing. You are the One who unites us with Yourself.
Wewe ni Rafiki wangu wa dhati; Wewe unajua vyote. Wewe ndiye yule Mmoja unayetuunganisha nawe Mwenyewe.
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥
gur sabdee salaahee-ai ant na paaraavaar.
We praise you through the Guru’s word, even though there is no end or limit to you virtues.
Tunakusifu kupitia neno la Guru, hata kama hakuna mwisho wala kikomo cha fadhila zako.
ਤਿਥੈ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਅਪੜੈ ਜਿਥੈ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੭॥
tithai kaal na aprhai jithai gur kaa sabad apaar. ||7||
Death does not reach that place, where the Infinite Word of the Guru resounds.
Kifo hakifikii mahali hapo, ambapo Neno lisilo na mwisho la Guru linasikika.
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਭੇ ਊਪਜਹਿ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
hukmee sabhay oopjahi hukmee kaar kamaahi.
It’s by God’s will that all are created, and all perform their assigned tasks according to His command.
Ni kwa wasia wa Mungu ambapo kila mtu anaumbwa, na wote wanatenda kazi walizopangiwa kulingana na amri yake.
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਕਾਲੈ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥
hukmee kaalai vas hai hukmee saach samaahi.
By His Command, all are subject to death; by His Command, they lovingly remember the eternal God.
Kwa amri yake, wote wanatiishwa kwa kifo; kwa amri yake, wanamkumbuka Mungu wa milele kwa upendo.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਥੀਐ ਇਨਾ ਜੰਤਾ ਵਸਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੮॥੪॥
nanak jo tis bhaavai so thee-ai inaa janta vas kichh naahi. ||8||4||
O’ Nanak, whatever pleases His Will comes to pass. Nothing is in the hands of these beings.
Ee Nanak, chochote kinachopendeza Wasia wake kinatendeka. Hakuna kitu kipo mikononi mwa viumbe hivi.

ਮਨਿ ਜੂਠੈ ਤਨਿ ਜੂਠਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਜੂਠੀ ਹੋਇ ॥
man joothai tan jooth hai jihvaa joothee ho-ay.
if one’s mind has been polluted by the vices, then the body also becomes polluted (engaging in vices) and the tongue becomes polluted as well.
Iwapo akili ya mtu imechafuliwa na maovu, basi mwili pia unachafuka (kujishughulisha katika maovu) na ulimi pia unachafuka.
