ਸਤਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸਦ ਭੈ ਰਚੈ ਆਪਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੧॥
satgur mili-ai sad bhai rachai aap vasai man aa-ay. ||1||
Meeting the True Guru, one is permeated forever with the revered fear of God who Himself comes to dwell within the mind.
Kukutana na Guru wa kweli, mtu anapenyezwa milele na uwoga wa heshima wa Mungu ambaye mwenyewe anakuja kuishi ndani mwa akili.
ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
bhaa-ee ray gurmukh boojhai ko-ay.
O’ brother, only rare persons realize God by following the Guru’s teachings.
Ee ndugu, watu nadra pekee wanagundua Mungu kwa kufuata mafundisho ya Guru.
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਣੇ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਖੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bin boojhay karam kamaavnay janam padaarath kho-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Performing rituals without understanding is wasting valuable human life.
Kufanya mila bila uelewa ni kuharibu maisha ya kibinadamu yenye thamana.
ਜਿਨੀ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਤਿਨੀ ਸਾਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਚਾਖੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥
jinee chaakhi-aa tinee saad paa-i-aa bin chaakhay bharam bhulaa-ay.
Those who have tasted the nectar of God’s Name, enjoy its flavor; without tasting it, they wander in doubt, lost and deceived.
Wale ambao wameonja nekta ya jina la Mungu, wanafurahia ladha yake; bila kuionja, wanazurura katika shaka, wakiwa wamepotea na kudanganywa.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
amrit saachaa naam hai kahnaa kachhoo na jaa-ay.
God’s eternal Name is the Ambrosial Nectar; no one can describe it.
Jina la Mungu la milele ni nekta ya ambrosia; hakuna mtu anaweza kuieleza.
ਪੀਵਤ ਹੂ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਭਇਆ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
peevat hoo parvaan bha-i-aa poorai sabad samaa-ay. ||2||
Absorbed in the perfect Guru’s word, upon drinking the nectar of Naam one is immediately accepted in God’s court.
Kuzama katika neno la Guru kamili, baada ya kunywa nekta ya Naam mara moja mtu anakubalika katika mahakama ya Mungu.
ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਤ ਪਾਈਐ ਹੋਰੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
aapay day-ay ta paa-ee-ai hor karnaa kichhoo na jaa-ay.
We receive the gift of this nectar only if He Himself bestows it upon us. Nothing else can be done to obtain it.
Tunapokea tuzo ya Naam hii iwapo tu Yeye mwenyewe atawaze kwatu. Hakuna kitu kingine kinaweza kufanywa kuipokea.
ਦੇਵਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਕੈ ਹਥਿ ਦਾਤਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਪਾਇ ॥
dayvan vaalay kai hath daat hai guroo du-aarai paa-ay.
The Gift is in the Hands of the Great Giver, and one receives it through the Guru.
Tuzo ipo mikononi mwa Mtoaji Mkuu, na mtu anaipokea kupitia kwa Guru.
ਜੇਹਾ ਕੀਤੋਨੁ ਤੇਹਾ ਹੋਆ ਜੇਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥੩॥
jayhaa keeton tayhaa ho-aa jayhay karam kamaa-ay. ||3||
One becomes as God made him based upon the past deeds
Mtu anakuwa alivyoumbwa na Mungu kulingana na vitendo vyake vya awali.
ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
jat sat sanjam naam hai vin naavai nirmal na ho-ay.
God’s Name, is the abstinence, truthfulness, and self-restraint. Without meditating on Naam, no one becomes pure.
Jina la Mungu, ni kujizuia, ukweli na kutengana na maovu. Bila kutafakari kuhusu Naam, hakuna mtu anakuwa safi.
ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
poorai bhaag naam man vasai sabad milaavaa ho-ay.
Through perfect good fortune, the Naam comes to dwell within the mind. Through the Guru’s word, one merges into Him.
Kupitia bahati nzuri kamili, Naam inakuja kuishi akilini.Kupitia neno la Guru, mtu anaungana na Mungu.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਰੰਗਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥੧੭॥੫੦॥
naanak sehjay hee rang varatdaa har gun paavai so-ay. ||4||17||50||
O’ Nanak, one who is intuitively imbued with God’s Love, develops His virtues.
Ee Nanak, yule ambaye amejawa kiangavu na upendo wa Mungu, anaendeleza fadhila zake.

ਕਾਂਇਆ ਸਾਧੈ ਉਰਧ ਤਪੁ ਕਰੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
kaaN-i-aa saaDhai uraDh tap karai vichahu ha-umai na jaa-ay.
One may torment one’s body with extremes of self-discipline, practice intensive meditation and hang upside-down, but still ego does not go from within.
Mtu anaweza kutesa mwili wake kwa nidhamu ya kibinafsi iliyokithiri, afanye kutafakari kwenye mhemko na kuangika kichwa chini, lakini bado ubinafsi hauondoki kutoka ndani.
ਅਧਿਆਤਮ ਕਰਮ ਜੇ ਕਰੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਪਾਇ ॥
aDhi-aatam karam jay karay naam na kab hee paa-ay.
One may perform religious rituals, still that person would never attain the Naam.
Mtu anaweza kufanya mila za kidini, lakini mtu huyo hawezi kutawazwa Naam.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੧॥
gur kai sabad jeevat marai har naam vasai man aa-ay. ||1||
Following the Guru’s teachings, when one completely eradicates one’s ego (as if one has died while yet alive), then God’s Name comes to dwell within the mind.
Kufuata mafundisho ya Guru, wakati mtu anaangamiza ubinafsi wake kabisa (kana kwamba mtu amekufa akiwa bado hai), kisha jina la Mungu linakuja kuishi akilini.
ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਜੁ ਸਤਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾ ॥
sun man mayray bhaj satgur sarnaa.
Listen, O my mind: hurry to the Protection of the Guru’s Sanctuary.
Sikiliza, Ee akili yangu, harakisha uende kwenye ulinzi wa ziara ya Guru.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਬਿਖੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਗੁਰ ਤਰਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur parsaadee chhutee-ai bikh bhavjal sabad gur tarnaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
It is through the Guru’s Grace that we are saved and cross the poisonous world-ocean full of vices.
Ni kupitia neema ya Guru ambapo tunakombolewa na kuvuka bahri-dunia yenye sumu iliyojaa maovu.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਸਭਾ ਧਾਤੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ॥
tarai gun sabhaa Dhaat hai doojaa bhaa-o vikaar.
Everything under the influence of the three modes of Maya (vice, virtue and power) shall perish. The love of duality leads one to indulge in vices.
Kila kitu chini ya ushawishi wa mbinu tatu za Maya (dhambi, fadhila na mamlaka) kitaangamia. Upendo wa uwili unaongoza mtu kujihusisha na maovu.
ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਪੜੈ ਬੰਧਨ ਮੋਹ ਬਾਧਾ ਨਹ ਬੂਝੈ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥
pandit parhai banDhan moh baaDhaa nah boojhai bikhi-aa pi-aar.
The Pandit reads the scriptures motivated by attachment (for material gain). Engrossed in love of the poison (of Maya), he fails to realize God.
Mwalimi mwenye busara anasoma maandishi yaliyochochewa na kiambatanisho (cha kujifaidi kimali). Akijihusisha na upendo wa sumu (ya Maya), anakosa kugundua Mungu.
ਸਤਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਤ੍ਰਿਕੁਟੀ ਛੂਟੈ ਚਉਥੈ ਪਦਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥੨॥
satgur mili-ai tarikutee chhootai cha-uthai pad mukat du-aar. ||2||
Only by meeting the true Guru, one finds release from the three attributes of Maya (vice, virtue and power) and reaches the fourth state of salvation.
Ni kwa kukutana na Guru wa kweli tu, ambapo mtu anafanywa huru kutoka sifa tatu za Maya (dhambi, fadhila na mamlaka) na kufikia hali ya nne ya wokovu.
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਚੂਕੈ ਮੋਹੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ॥
gur tay maarag paa-ee-ai chookai moh gubaar.
Through the Guru, the righteous Path for life is found, and the darkness of emotional attachment is dispelled.
Kupitia kwa Guru, njia ya haki ya maisha inapatwa, na giza ya kiambatanisho cha kihisia kinaondolewa.
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਤਾ ਉਧਰੈ ਪਾਏ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥
sabad marai taa uDhrai paa-ay mokh du-aar.
Following the Guru’s word, when one so erases the self-conceit as if one has died while still alive, only then one is emancipated and achieves salvation.
Kufuata neno la Guru, wakati mtu anafuta majivuno ya kibinafsi kana kwamba mtu amekufa akiwa bado hai, wakati huo tu ndipo mtu anakombolewa na kutimiza wokovu.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹੈ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
gur parsaadee mil rahai sach naam kartaar. ||3||
By Guru’s Grace, one remains united with the eternal Name of the Creator.
Kwa neema ya Guru, mtu anabaki ameungana na Jina la milele la Muumba.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਅਤਿ ਸਬਲ ਹੈ ਛਡੇ ਨ ਕਿਤੈ ਉਪਾਇ ॥
ih manoo-aa at sabal hai chhaday na kitai upaa-ay.
This mind is very powerful. It does not release a person by any means.
Akili hii ni yenye nguvu mno. Haiachilii mtu kwa njia yoyote.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਇਦਾ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਇ ॥
doojai bhaa-ay dukh laa-idaa bahutee day-ay sajaa-ay.
The mind affects man with the disease of duality and inflicts severe punishment.
Akili inaathiri binadamu na ugonjwa ya uwili na kuumiza kwa adhabu kali.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਗੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੪॥੧੮॥੫੧॥
naanak naam lagay say ubray ha-umai sabad gavaa-ay. ||4||18||51||
O’ Nanak, those who shed their ego through the Guru’s word and are attuned to God’s Name, are saved.
Ee Nanak, wale wanaojitenga na ubinafsi wao kupitia neno la Guru na wamemakinikia jina la Mungu, wanakombolewa.

kirpaa karay gur paa-ee-ai har naamo day-ay drirh-aa-ay.
When He shows mercy, the Guru is met, who implants God’s Name in the heart.
Wakati anaonyesha huruma yake, Guru anapatwa, anayepandikiza jina la Mungu moyoni.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
bin gur kinai na paa-i-o birthaa janam gavaa-ay.
Without following the Guru’s teachings, no one has ever realized God’s Name, without which one wastes away his life in vain.
Bila kufuata mafundisho ya Guru, hakuna mtu amewahi kugundua jina la Mungu, ambayo bila jina hilo mtu anaharibu maisha yake bure.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਣੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
manmukh karam kamaavnay dargeh milai sajaa-ay. ||1||
By performing ritualistic deeds, a manmukh suffers punishment in God’s court.
Kwa kufanya vitendo vya kimila, manmukh anateseka adhabu katika mahakama ya Mungu.
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਚੁਕਾਇ ॥
man ray doojaa bhaa-o chukaa-ay.
O mind, give up the love of duality.
Ee akili, salimu upendo wako wa uwili.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
antar tayrai har vasai gur sayvaa sukh paa-ay. rahaa-o.
God dwells within you; serving the Guru, you shall find peace.
Mungu anaishi ndani mwako; kutumikia Guru, utapata amani.
ਸਚੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਚੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਸਚਿ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
sach banee sach sabad hai jaa sach Dharay pi-aar.
When a person cultivates love for the eternal God then that person realizes that the Guru’s word (Gurbani) is the divine word.
Wakati Guru anaendeleza upendo kwa Mungu wa milele basi mtu huyo anagundua ya kwamba neno la Guru (Gurbani) ni neno takatifu.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ॥
har kaa naam man vasai ha-umai kroDh nivaar.
By eradicating egotism and anger, God’s Name comes to dwell in the mind.
Kwa kuangamiza ubinafsi na hasira, jina la Mungu linakuja kuishi akilini.
ਮਨਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਤਾ ਪਾਏ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥੨॥
man nirmal naam Dhi-aa-ee-ai taa paa-ay mokh du-aar. ||2||
By meditating on Naam with a pure mind, liberation (from vices) is achieved.
Kwa kutafakari kuhusu Naam kwa akili safi, ukombozi (kutoka dhambi) unatimizwa.
ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਗੁ ਬਿਨਸਦਾ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
ha-umai vich jag binasdaa mar jammai aavai jaa-ay.
Engrossed in egotism, the world perishes. It dies and is re-born; it continues coming and going in reincarnation.
Ikijihusisha katika ubinafsi, dunia inaangamia. Inakufa kisha kuzaliwa upya; inaendelea kuja na kuenda katika kuzaliwa upya.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਜਾਸਨਿ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
manmukh sabad na jaannee jaasan pat gavaa-ay.
The self-willed do not realize the value of the Guru’s word; they forfeit their honor, and depart in disgrace.
Wenye wasia ya kibinafsi hawagundui thamani ya neno la Guru; wanapoteza heshima yao, na kuondoka katika aibu.
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਚੇ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੩॥
gur sayvaa naa-o paa-ee-ai sachay rahai samaa-ay. ||3||
By serving the Guru (by following his teachings), God’s Name is realized, and one remains absorbed in the eternal God.
Kwa kutumikia Guru (kufuata mafundisho yake), jina la Mungu linagunduliwa, na mtu anabaki ameunganishwa na Mungu wa milele.
